UPDATE: Since the owner responded with completely false allegations, here is a timeline of what actually happened. -First, while the job was dispatched through a third-party service company, your technician still represents that company, and the obligations and conduct on site remain your responsibility. -Access Was Fully Provided, -Claim of "No Access" Is False From the moment your technician arrived, full access to the trap was already prepared. The trap was open, visible, and ready for service inside the garage. There was never any refusal or failure to provide access, and claiming otherwise is factually untrue. -The "Debris" and OSHA Claim Were Fabricated When the cover was removed earlier, a few small pieces of debris fell into the pit. Kevin stated he could not begin work due to an "OSHA violation." We asked him directly if removing the debris would resolve the issue, and he said yes. He then stood there and watched us remove it. Once cleared, we asked him to verify so he could start working. Only then did he suddenly claim he could not perform the job because of a minimal natural layer of soil at the bottom of the pit, something completely normal and never mentioned previously. This shifting explanation makes it clear he had no intention of performing the job from the beginning. There is no specific OSHA standard that treats a thin, naturally settled layer of soil at the bottom of a cleared sewer trap or manhole as a prohibited or non-compliant "debris hazard." The regulations focus on atmospheric hazards, engulfment risk (flowable solids or liquid), structural collapse, toxic gases , not benign, settled soil. -No One Told Kevin to "Shut Up" At no point was Kevin told to "shut up." What actually happened is that when he continued arguing after refusing to work, we told him that if he had no intention of completing the job, he could simply leave instead of escalating the situation. Kevin then became combative, stepped toward us, and said: "Don't tell me to shut up." This was never said to him; he inferred it himself, which he then admitted because he said what we told him "implied" that he should shut up. -Kevin Escalated the Situation -- Not the Homeowner Kevin repeatedly argued as he walked back to his truck. We maintained distance the entire time and simply pointed out that his reasons for refusing service kept changing. He then cursed at us while on the phone with his dispatcher, something your company notably did not deny. -Photographs Were Taken After Kevin Cursed and Slammed the Door Your statement claims photos taken near the truck were "aggressive" or "threatening." That is completely false. Photos were taken after he cursed at us and abruptly slammed the truck door. Video clearly shows no threatening behavior, only documentation of his conduct after he escalated the situation. -Your "Investigation" Excluded the Actual Witnesses Most importantly, at no point did your company contact us for our version of events, despite claiming to have conducted an "investigation." We have full video evidence of the interaction, including Kevin's shifting statements, the cleared trap, and his inappropriate behavior. Several of the claims you made about our behavior are not only incorrect, but they are statements of fact that you published publicly without ever speaking to us or reviewing the video evidence. The worst company to deal with when you have an emergency. My main sewer line had to be cleaned. One guy came in and said that job requires two people. The next day only one guy showed up and said that I have to build the platform to put a machine on. That was a surprise since I am used to bringing a scalpel to a doctor's office to get a surgery but not for plumbing. Called another company, one guy fixed the problem without much talking. I hired Balkan Plumbing for a sewer repair at my property on 236 West 52nd Street, NYC, for $37,500, signed on February 7, 2025. After paying $18,750 upfront, they demanded an additional $20,000 for an alleged "unforeseen" obstruction but refused to provide supporting documentation, such as the 811 mark-out report or cost breakdown. They stopped work, leaving a hazardous, uncovered sewer trap in my sprinkler room, forcing me to pay a handyman to address the odor and safety risks. They then poured asphalt without completing the sewer repair and sent an invoice exceeding the original contract amount. When I disputed the change order, they threatened a lien. We love our older colonial home but the late November rain (that came from the late season Hurricane) had the ENTIRE NYC sewage system backed up. We we're NOT spared! Can't believe how disgusting and unprofessional these people are. Avoid at all cost! I sincerely think they are running a scam with insurance to falsify reasons why your issue is not covered. Delovan who came to my house didn't even properly assess the issue before determining it was an internal "issue". They gave us a morning window for an emergency situation and didn't come until 3pm. When he explained to him that we had our plumber come and Roto Rooters come and they all explained it was a sewer issue he said he would get his snake and do the job. He went outside and drove off and never returned. How professional is that? Requested service for backed up drain in the bathtub. Technician Brian stated that the request was for outside plumbing work so the dispatcher misdirected the request. He stepped inside my house, looked at the bathtub and asked me where he is supposed to insert the snake? Really?? You are the plumber. Brian said each house is different and he had no idea! I completely agree with the review given by Monique C. For 10 years I have had a contract with the American Water Resources for the water and sewer line protection program. I never needed their services before January 22, 2014 when sewage began backing up in my driveway. The American Water Resources always chooses the plumbing for customers and they choose Balkan Plumbing of 130-31 Jamaica Ave, Richmond Hill for me. They sent someone named Kevin who told me to get a neighbor to take a picture of the inside of the pit which then did not have any water in it. Kevin said I must get someone to scrap the cement off the small line and trap inside it. A neighbor did just that and obtained a photo of a break in a sewer line. Although people at Balkan had previously asked for a photo to be sent by phone text, this time, they said they wanted the photo to be sent to an email address. However, my neighbor did not have an email address, so he then sent the photo by Balkan by a phone text which they admitted they had received. Yesterday, a man from Balkan said they would be calling me, but they did not. Around 11:30 A. M. a person , unannounced, came from Balkan and took a picture of the pit which is now half full with water as we had a lot of rain just now. W hile I was talking with a person from American Water Resources, Balkan's number came up and I called them back. A lady there said that my pit now has water in it and plumbers from Balkan do not pump water. Has anyone ever heard of that before? I hung up on her. My lawyer, who is in a firm that represents retired New York City United Federation of Teachers of whom I am a member said that Balkan is just giving me the runaround and that I should notify the Department of Environmental Protection of New York City of this. The lawyer said that Balkan should have sent their own worker to scrape the cement and to take the photo of the pit in the first place.I would like to give Balkan ZERO stars. Before Balkan, we already have a trusted and responsive plumber that did reliable work at my parents house in Fresh Meadows NY. But when all the drains and toilets started to run slow, our plumber could not do the job to completely clear the sewer drain. They recommended Balkan to us and George came, fixed everything in the house systematically and then hit the sewer drain with everything they got. I was referred by AWR my insurance company. Prior to the Joseph Balkan company coming out to inspect the job, to diagnose their findings, I researched their back ground with the BBB DEPARTMENT. I reviewed other consumer having the same scenario had been encountering mischief aggregation for this company has the I don't care attitude and is unreliable. I interviewed the young man named Andre who came to do the inspection and ask years he's with company, adding what is their warranty he responds, there's no guarantees you deal with the insurance company. My house has a leak coming out of the main pipe as per DEP who came out to inspect. This young man representing Joseph Balkan whom is the son of the company out of spite called the insurance company and said it did not pass inspection. In reality he knew he will have some type if leagal Issues if he did not comply according with the job. If you can not have technicality to stand behind your company then your unrealizable. Adding more the experience calling and being disrespected by their receptionist name Christina who was unprofessional, rude and sarcastic over the phone. Service was great When I first called to set up an appointment for a technician to come out with the camera to look inside my main sewer line. However if you are requesting "A Report" you must do it the very same day and be very specific in your request. I had been calling for a week asking for my report and now I'm being told I am getting a video because I never requested a report. Women answering the phone like to play words games. Since I didn't tell them I wanted them to return to do the sewer repair they have been stringing me along. As it turns out the break isn't on my property but rather next door. So disappointed. Promises made but not fulfilled. I was considering recommending this company but now I'm not so sure. After being told I would have the report & video today 7/6 it is 7:55 PM and I have NOT received anything. We had a huge problem in our new house with our storm pipe not being able to keep up during heavy rains. We called a lot of different 4 and 5 star rated drain services and we spent thousands snaking and not getting anywhere. One of the 5 star services proposed we need to dig up the house and foundation because a storm drain wasn't actually connected to the city line. Turns out another company came in and found that it was simply clogged and the dirt made it seem like there was no piping. Long story short. Balkan was a breathe of fresh air. We called them, they were organized, and scheduled us for a camera inspection and potentially cleaning. They showed up on time, and spent the next 3 hours snaking the same pipe that the other people snakes and said was clean. The other guys didn't actually clean anything. Balkans staff have depth of knowledgeable and their profession and take pride in fixing customers plumbing problems. Our basement had been flooded every time it rains. So far we haven't had a heavy rain yet. But just seeing the flow of water from the main trap after hey cleaned it, I have no doubt they fixed our problem. If not, we have a 90 day warranty and we're promised emergency response if it backs up again within that time. Also reasonably priced for the work. Would def recommend. Balkan recently installed a back flow valve and alarm system in my home in Brooklyn. My experiences with them have been decidedly mixed, so I felt it useful to share with others the ups and downs of working with Balkan. Like so many other homeowners, the overtaxed sewer system here in NYC has proven to be problematic. During two immense storms in the past three years, rainwater and sewer contents backed up into our basement. An engineer I hired recommended several steps to prevent this from occurring in the future. One step was installation of the back flow valve in our waste line. This valve senses back flow and shuts the waste line until the back pressure returns to normal. There appears to be very few contractors in NYC qualified to install these valves. I accepted estimates from Balkan and from one other. Balkan came in $5000 less than the other. I signed an agreement and gave Balkan a 50% deposit. The valves are in short supply and it took approximately four weeks for my valve to arrive at Balkan's warehouse. Installing the valve involves some demolition within the pit in my basement containing the waste line. Once installed, the pit is to be restored to its original dimensions. I also selected the option of purchasing and having installed an alarm system that serves to notify the homeowner when the valve is closed, permitting us to temporarily stop using household water in order to prevent back up of the closed waste system. So, here begins the problematic issues with Balkan, which, I believe can be characterized by (a) poor communications with customers, (b) lack of availability or responsiveness of responsible individuals, such as site supervisors, and (c) a generally poor attitude towards customers that essentially says "we just want to finish the job and have as little to do with you as possible". Their contract clearly stipulates that they are not responsible for dirt or debris generated by excavation and by installation of the filter and restoration of the waste pit. Recognizing that, I asked workmen to hang a tarp between their work space and the remainder of my (finished) basement. On days 1, 3, and 4 (yes, this turned out to be a four day job, something that was NOT communicated to me in advance), workmen agreed and hung a tarp. However, on day 2, they seemingly agreed, but, inspection one hour after work commenced revealed a thick amount of dust and debris everywhere else in the basement, including in the fabric of furniture. Calls to the site supervisor (Martin) were met with a voice mail on the first ring that stated "this is Martin, leave a message, I'll call you back". Never did call us back. Professional cleaning of the basement and the furniture cost $780 (more on this later). When restoration of the pit was finished and a newly fabricated hatch cover was installed, I (and a neighbor who is a project supervisor for NYC Office of Management and Budget, OMB), found the work sloppy and, frankly, unsafe, with the hatch cover not sitting flush on the top of the pit, but crooked and sticking up 1/2 inch above the pit on one side. The inside of the pit was sloppily restored and appeared that some of the masonry material had already collapsed. The contract promised "broom clean" premises following work, but I'd be surprised if anyone so much as lifted a broom after completing work. Dirt and debris remained on the floor of the basement, on the steps leading to the basement and on outside landings. Calls to Balkan to address these issues were met with indifference, until, of course, I indicated the balance could not be paid until the job was safely and neatly completed. Another site supervisor came and inspected and, with tremendous indifference, agreed to make necessary fixes. In the meanwhile, Sean, in the billing department, appeared to take over interactions with me (requests, during an earlier phone call, to speak with one of the owners were responded to with an explanation that one brother was out sick and the other "does not take calls from customers"). When I questioned this, a receptionist angrily told me I was "rude". To his credit, Sean agreed to credit me one-half the cost of professional cleaning ($400). On the final day of my relationship with Balkan, the same site supervisor accompanied two workmen to complete the job. When I asked him to review what they would do, he responded angrily, telling me to "just get out of the way and let me do my job". Ultimately, the job was finished to my satisfaction. Balkan's strengths do not lie in communications, customer service, customer relationships and cleanliness. In retrospect, I suppose, I should have paid the extra $5000 and had the job done with a contractor who values his relationship with clients significantly more than Balkan. He knew where the clog was by listening and had his side kick, who was also excellent, remove some residual sand and dirt. 5 Stars plus. After 6 (six) visits by other organizations over 4 weeks to address sporadic sewer backups, we gave Balkan a call mid day Saturday. By 6:30 PM George arrived. He reviewed all we had done, all the trials and tribulations and got to work. Now you might ask why I didn't call Balkan first: I did not know they served the south shore of LI. George just left at 8:30 PM and did a fantastic, phenomenal job. He made sure everything worked and that the blockages were a thing of the past. I'm a landlord of a small residential building in Bayside queens. I'm pissed off at myself for not getting water main insurance on my property . The building is over 100 years old and so is the water main which obviously broke a few months ago. I was a little lucky that it was only leaking in the street and not affecting my tenants which bought me some time to figure out what to do. I did some research called a few companies and got some estimates. This company came the same day , was there early and verified it was my line leaking in the street. The price fell into the price range I was expecting 6-8 k, actually on the lower side of what I expected. They gave good instructions about how to handle the DEP NYC water so they don't shut if the water to the house before they come in 2 days. Basically they got most of job done in one day as they said. I had previously contacted the company to start a job to install a new water main and sewer pipe, I even sent over my credit card information so they could place an initial deposit. However, we couldn't start the job due to a stop work after my general contractor abruptly ran off, their rep told us to get everything sorted and contact them back when it's done. After months of dealing with the super backed up DOB and the DEP for the proper permits and removal of the stop work permit, I contacted again. I asked for an updated quote and they told me to send in the updated paperwork, they said they would have it done in a week or so. I do as stated and even tagged Mr. David Balkan himself in the email, who I had spoken with the first time around, and explained the situation and attached the proper documents. I call the following week, nothing has changed, they said another week. So I call again for the third week now, they told me the quote was in process that their estimator would call me the following day. NOTHING. No email response, no call, NOTHING. We had an incredibly positive experience with this company. But first, I want to thank everyone here who took the time to write reviews. It was the reviews that led me to choose this company. For years I have known our sewer wasn't quite right. I called a well-known plumbing company in Forest Hills to come take a look. Well, all they did was flush the toilet and said there was no problem. But I could tell that the toilet was not flushing quite the way it used to. They shrugged their shoulders and left. Over the years, the problem stayed the same. Then yesterday we had a bigger problem. And the system backed up into the shower. I had that horrible feeling that a pipe might be broken. I imagined my lawn being dug up and money pouring out of our checking account. But it is the holiday weekend so we figured that maybe someone would come on Wednesday. Well, much to our happy surprise, Balkan sent their man Javed here within 20 minutes of calling them today, Monday, the day before July 4th. Javed worked on the sewer to clear it, explained the problem and put on a new cap. From his point of view, this wasn't really work. And since it was the July 4th weekend he just wanted to wish us a happy one and be on his way ... no bill! I almost fainted. We paid him of course. We insisted. But let me tell you, he restored my faith in humanity today with his expertise and kindness. He said if we need anything else, to just call and they'll take care of it. I am editing this review based on my current experience with Balkan. Updated on 5/10: A manager never called. Update on 5/5: I called and ask to speak to a manager because no one responded to my email from 4/29. After explaining multiple times why I wanted to speak to a manager, I was passed to someone else who asked why I was calling. That person, Sara, asked me repeatedly why I wanted to speak to a manager, ignoring my answer. She then said that according to their notes I cursed at their employee (when it was actually their technician, Miguel, who cursed at me). She didn't ask me what happened. Then she said, "You're not going to speak to a manager." She finally said a manager would call me. Never in all of my life have I been treated this way by a company. I can longer recommend them. Problem with service on 4/24: I'm having a rat problem and the exterminators can't figure out how they're getting in. They suggested I have a camera put into the sewer line to see if there's a break, so I called Balkan, whom I've used a few times before and have had positive experiences. Their technician, Miguel Lopez, came on Saturday for my scheduled appointment (although he was late and hadn't communicated he'd be late) and didn't have a camera. He then began to argue with me about the details of a previous appointment and the one I'd requested, saying George gives special discounts he shouldn't be given because of the price I was quoted (I hadn't even made the appointment with George), and all sorts of illogical things. For example, when I told him I'd had it done before (Balkan to put a camera down my sewer line in 2016 when they replaced my waterline), he argued with me saying I had a snake job. He wouldn't listen to me at all and kept interrupting me when I tried to correct him. It continued to escalate to the point where he said, "I ain't doing shit for you" (which also didn't make sense since he wasn't even equipped to do it), and then he said, "You can kiss my ass" as he left. I couldn't believe a service employee would speak to a customer that way. I then tried calling the office a few times, but no one picked up. When someone finally picked up she immediately said I already heard about you from our technician and how you spoke to him. She began saying things that didn't make sense about my last appointment as well, which had nothing to do with the service I had requested. She wouldn't listen at all to what my experience was. She then began basically screaming at me that she could reschedule me, so I asked for her name and she hung up on me. I called back a number of times and no one picked up. Previous Google Review: My outside drains weren't draining well and my basement was flooding during heavy rains, so I called Balkan to diagnose my problem. George communicated very well about when he'd be arriving. He took the time to diagnose my issue, provide me a quote and gave me some pointers on how to maintain my drains. I trusted George's thorough inspection and diagnosis and felt confident Balkan could conservatively solve my problem. As a woman homeowner, I particularly appreciated that George didn't talk down to me. Balkan also replaced my main water line a few years ago and I felt they were professional, did high quality work, and provided great customer service. I had a storm drain problem that would overflow during heavy rain storm, I hired the $49.95 guys to come over and snake the pipes and when that didn't work they suggested I order a water jet blast and camera down my pipes to see whats going on. When they came again to do the work they gave me the bad news, after water blast the camera showed my storm pipe was disconnected and my sewage pipe had a huge hole on the bottom that would eventually disconnect. They told me I have to hire contractors to replace the entire pipe. I went on yelp and gotten referrals from friends to do the job. of all the people that came, Balkan was the only company that gave me a reasonable quote and explained the procedure of the job. to replace two pipes is a huge job and I was looking at a 5 figure price. I spoke to Frank from Balkan on the phone and agreed on the down payment and the start date of the job. On the day of the job, all the workers arrived on time and they went to work ASAP. I recently had work done in my front yard and had beautiful tiles laid. I was heartbroken and expected them to get destroyed first, but the workers were very understanding and they did not start off by breaking everything apart right away. They started off by breaking the sidewalk first to look inside the pipes. Upon doing so we realized the only problem area is under the sidewalk because when Con Edison installed their box they damaged my pipes. The foremen spoke to me immediately and suggested I should only repair this area instead of replacing both pipes, but if I want to replace both pipes they can also do that. When I agreed to do the repair only, I spoke to Frank again on the phone and now the 5 figure job has gone down to become a 4 figure job and not only that, they did not have to break the beautiful tiles in front of my house. a HUGE relieve. I was very satisfied with the job and the honesty of the workers because I already gave them 5 figures as a down payment and the workers could had easily came and started breaking everything apart to replace the pipes. Frank came back to my house the same day to return all the extra money to me and I can't thank them enough for this. We were very satisfied with our water line replacement with Joseph L Balkan. We initially called vigilante plumbing, and waited three days for an appointment. We were so disappointed when they came for five minutes, told us that they don't do water lines, charged for the visit, and left. Balkan was able to send an estimator the same day who walked through the problem and gave me an exact quote. Not a range, a quote. They scheduled the crew for the next morning, and I am amazed at how much they were able to do. These guys dug four 8 foot holes through our yard and the street and snaked a copper line in. They connected the holes underground with water and air pressure. When they were done you'd never even know that they dig holes. They even carefully put our grass back.
