Decided to try this place out after reading the reviews and oh man was it a good decision! We got there around 9:30 and there were a few parties ahead of us but we didn't mind waiting. A man came out (assuming manager or owner?) and said it was our lucky day because a table for 2 just opened up so we didn't have to wait! We sat down and our lovely waiter Brad came over. We ordered. Both got the same meal - fit for a king/queen. Holy french toast batman! This is the french toast you dream about! It was absolutely delicious. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I heard about Ball Square Cafe on the Phantom Gourmet a while back and put it on my list of places to try. Every time I drove by, there was a line outside that for one reason or another, I was too busy to wait in. But this time, I had time to spare and it was my roommate's birthday so we were looking for a great breakfast spot. The place is small so if (and more likely when) you have to wait in line, you'll be waiting outside. Luckily, there are some heaters above, but you'd be better off going when it's relatively warm outside. While we were waiting, the owner Mike came out and greeted us, thanking us for waiting and also letting us know that all drinks are self serve and we are welcome to go inside and grab a warm beverage. He was extremely nice and told us to let him know if we needed anything. We were waiting for about 25 minutes before we got inside. We were seated at a table and immediately approached by our waitress. She told us about the self serve drink station and also let us know if we wanted hot chocolate, we could put in an order with her. Needless to say, we each ordered a homemade hot chocolate with homemade whipped cream and it was DELICIOUS. My roommate ordered pancakes with a side of bacon and I got corned beef hash with two eggs over easy and scali toast. I love corned beef hash and although this hash didn't blow me away, it was definitely good. The eggs and toast were perfect and the pancakes were delicious too. Healthy helping of bacon too. "Oh my god" was all I could think while relishing my breakfast. The Belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream made my toes curl. I couldn't remember the last time I had such fresh, rich whipped cream. The berries were ripe and firm and the tang of the strawberries went so well with the whipped cream and syrup. I will dream about this waffle. I was feeling decadent so I ordered a breakfast sandwich, too, on a croissant no less. The turkey sausage was well spiced and there were two generous patties on the sandwich! It was really greasy in the best way possible between the buttery croissant and the sausage. I happily took home my leftovers. That breakfast was so satisfying that I feel at peace with the world. (Side notes: Mike, the owner is very friendly and welcoming. My favorite breakfast place. Been going here once in a while for a couple years. The reason I don't come here more often is because of the long lines I've heard about. I usually come here on a day off or in the afternoon if I dare come on a weekend. Never had to wait for a table more than a couple of minutes. The food is amazing and all super huge portions for the price. If you are looking for a feast you can do no better than the fit for king/queen combo. My fiance usually goes for the eggs benedict which are amazing with a great hollandaise sauce. Get the grilled mashed (crispy grilled exterior, creamy on the inside, wonderful all around), skip the diced potatoes. My favorite thing here is the french toast as I've always been a sucker for good french toast. This is probably my favorite of all time with THICK challah that will make you holla. This place was pretty good. After watching an episode of Parks and Recreation, I had a craving for waffles. Seems this is the place to go! I ended up getting the caramelized bananas and strawberry waffle. It was good, not great. I think the next time, I may not get anything that is caramelized because the sauce that coats the fruit soggies the waffle too fast. You definitely don't need syrup if you do get one of the caramelized waffles. The BF got the corned beef hash. THAT was amazing. It definitely was not from a can, so I highly recommend trying this dish as well. Tried it with the grilled mashed potatoes, and those were also good. The customer service here is AMAZING. First off, self-serve coffee. It's great if you're waiting in line and need to wake up. The second thing that I really liked was the owner/manager giving a genuine update of how long it would take for tables. There have been other places that give the usual "10-15 minute" answer, when it will actually take half an hour. Either way, it's a great place to go for breakfast or brunch. What a wonderful breakfast experience this place provides! A friend and I were in Boston for the weekend and decided to check out the Cambridge / Somerville area and grab a meal. The 45 minute trek was entirely worthwhile. When we arrived, there was a half hour wait. The owner Mike was incredibly friendly and individually introduced himself to everyone in line. Drinks were self serve with the exception of a few, and one of the waitresses was nice enough to bring out a fresh squeezed orange juice for me while waiting for a table. Service is unreal. As for the food, my eyes are always bigger than my stomach, so obviously I ordered too much as per usual. I got the Florentino benedict with fresh fruit, and my friend decided on the Mexican omelette. We also split two chocolate chip banana pancakes (the waitress warned us that they were massive so luckily we didn't get the triple stack like we'd originally planned). Everything was so good. The pancakes were my favorite, so fluffy and chocolatey with bites of fresh banana here and there. The fruit side was large and indeed very fresh, and my benedict was creamy and the eggs were perfectly poached. It was difficult to find parking and snowing outside but we figured the line out the door confirmed the great yelp ratings. Everyone loved what they ordered- the Omar's grilled mashed was amazing! We've been trying out the breakfast spots in Ball Square and this is by far my favorite. Gluten free pancakes AND waffles! Need I say more? I had the GF tri-berry pancakes. I ordered two, but one would have been enough. Beverages are self-serve, which is kinda fun. It's the only place around where you can get diced homefried potatoes instead of grilled mashed. Food is served as it comes out of the kitchen so everything is piping hot, although it's a little odd being the only one with food while the other dishes come out. And the service was top notch. Very attentive. Short wait times. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it's just too small. They need more seating so everyone can have an awesome breakfast without waiting. Although, they do have heat lamps installed under the outdoor awning to keep waiting patrons toasty even in the chilliest of winter temps. Just back from Ball Square Cafe this morning and today's is first time go there with Groupon. Went there around 11:30 am and get in by after 11:50am. By waiting outside there are couple outdoor heating devices on the top so it was not that cold to people lining there during winter. Also people waiting can do self-service to get unlimited hot coffee and it will be placed on the bill after seat in. Very friendly services and look around it is very clean and efficient servicing customer nicely. We order (1) Tijuana omelet (Thanks Lauren L.) including fires or potato and toasts, and (2) breakfast plate "fit for a king (or queen)", the plate includes french toast or pancakes, two eggs any style, bacon or sausage, toasts. both portion are quite large, and very tasty. Tijuana omelet is really awesome and french toast is as excellent as expected. I will definitely go Ball Square Cafe more after today's first try. By the way, next door "Sound bite" also a long time waiting outside, but I don't see any heating device outside so I may try Sound Bite other day in warmer weather. The only reason for 4-star is people going there should expect 20+ mins waiting outside. All others (food/price/service) deserve 5-star rating without a question. read more
