First off, I almost never buy cold beer. I go straight to 750ml bottles and belgiums. But for a specialty shop the cold selection is varying with local favorites to belgiums I'd normally never find in s cooler. Prices tend to run a buck or even more cheaper than my main store (Marty's - it's literally 3 minutes from my house). The Rochefort 10 is $6.50 and it is a steal! The staff is on top of their game knowledge wise although truth be told I'm not one to press for info as I usually know what I'm after. What is killer about these guys is their craft beer email list for rare stuff that doesn't make the shelves. It pains me to even write about it because I'd rather word not get out. I was able to secure a Rare Bourbon County Stout and an Old Stock 2009 cellar. Super impressive. They are slaying it! read more

This is a way overdue review, because Chris and I have been introduced by a mutual friend back in 2010, since then I have been a regular customer of his beautiful place. Throughout the years I couldn't say anything but positive things about Chris and his crew, whom customer service is top notch. If they don't have (rarely) what you are looking for, stay sure that they will find it for you. I live down the street from this liquor store and have been a customer for years and years. I like the tastings, the great selection of beer and wine, and of course, the close proximity to my apartment. The one thing I don't care for is the staff, which is why I am writing this review. Every time my husband and I stop by for a bottle of wine or some beer, the folks working at the store are pretty unfriendly. The staff KNOWS who we are; we are regulars and we have been shopping here for years. I don't expect a friendship but a simple smile or nod of recognition or "How are you tonight?" or "Happy New Year" would suffice. Ball Square is a small neighborhood. Why so cold? Great little liquor store that really maximizes a small space with good wine and beer selections. The wine section has everything from cheap ass chuck to $100+ bottles. The beer cooler is pretty good; they have a good selection of domestic microbrews but, sicne the space is limited, several fridges are chock-full of Bud cases which could easily be stored in the back. Go up the stairs on the right and you'll find another 'secret' beer cooler. They have a tiny cheese selection for an added bonus in this tiny little shop. The staff are friendly and helpful; they will gladly order whatever you want if you can't find it in the store. This has become my go-to spot for wine, and I can't say enough how impressed I am with the staff here. They are super knowledgeable and so friendly. Often times, they'll find you a bottle that's well under the price range you specified but even better than anything you could imagine. I absolutely love this place, and am so excited that my new apartment will be a lot closer to this store. Everyone is really helpful and knowledgeable. The other day, I went in and asked about a wine I had previously bought but couldn't remember the name of. One of the women who works there spent a good 10 minutes trying to help me find it based purely off what I could remember of he label. She also does a great job leading the wine tastings most Fridays and is very personable. The fellow who does the cheese bar is wonderful also, as are the rest of the employees. read more

This is my local wine shop, and I go here often. Their Beer selection and wine selection are great for such a small location, but I have taken issue with a few things. Usually when I am looking for a wine, I need a little help. I can name regions and grapes and flavor profiles, but nothing beats first hand experience. These guys aren't the kind of people you can rely on. The owner is at first seemingly helpful, but pay attention to what he says. They can't all be "very big, bold and juicy", in fact I know they're not. He strikes me as a salesman, and although he is very eager to help in any way possible, I think he is more concerned with making a sale than finding the right wine. Most other people who work in the store just don't know how to help. There is a young and helpful beer fan and some bald guy. The woman who works there is almost never at the counter, but you can find her at the wine tastings, which I frequent. She is the one in charge of buying the wine, and is therefore very helpful, but it is unlikely to run into her outside of the wine tastings. Despite this, I still find it to be a convenient place to shop and the owner smiles when he sees me. It's weird that this means something to me, but it is nice to say hello to him. He is always helpful and pays attention to my requests for assistance, despite my youth. In terms of service, this place is the opposite of the Wine and Cheese Cask, with well meaning, but somewhat lost employees. read more

I'm such a big fan! The people here are SO nice, and I love supporting local businesses! I'm always on the hunt for fun scotches (it's not for me, my husband is a big Macallan drinker), so found this place thanks to wine searcher - but I'll definitely be back for whenever I'm on the lookout for fun anniversary/birthday/Christmas gifts! Street parking is easy to find, they also have a great selection of wines (you can search their inventory online), as well as a huge selection of liquors! The store has a great selection, however it is a bit to overcrowded with bottles on the floor that you can trip over. The isles are very small, so you don't have much room to browse comfortably. If you shop late hours sometimes you have some of the drunks come by from nearby bar and can make you feel a little unsafe. I heard of several robberies at the store as well, so shop at your own risk!! read more

This is the only place is Boston/Cambridge/Somerville where I can find Kina l'Avion d'Or. They also sell Crema de Mezcal and the half-size bottles of Dolin Vermouth (Rouge, Blanc and Dry). I'm so glad I found this store, and I'll definitely return for any unusual spirits on my list! read more

One of THE best spots in the area for cocktail connoisseurs. They have a wide range of Rums, Gins, Whiskeys and most impressively a nice selection of premium liqueurs from Alpenhaus, Marie Brizard and others. Plus Plymouth Sloe Gin, Swedish Punsch, artisanal American whiskies and great beers to boot. Chris, the owner, sets the tone for this store. Friendly, affable, approachable, open to ideas, he is a pleasure to deal with. Over the years he has transformed this once average neighborhood joint into one of the outstanding liquor stores in the entire Boston area. Wine, beer and liquor tastings here are fun, well executed and always informative. The staff are friendly, genuine and eager to help. Recently they have added a small but well chosen selection of cheeses, meats, olives and other tasty foods. Lastly, their wine selection is second to none. From the affordable to the luxurious, their selection is smart, tasteful and expertly chosen. The wine club they run offers generous discounts to regular customers and has a consistently interesting selection. All in all I am delighted to have such an amazing store in my neighborhood. This is the best liquor store I've ever visited. Not only is their selection unparalleled in the Boston area (though I wish they sold Mexican Fernet!), their staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I decided to give this place a try over my local since they advertised a specific type of local gin that I wanted. They did not have the gin in stock, which didn't bother me so much since I didn't think to call first, but I wasn't all that impressed with the service, which people seem to be raving about on here. I asked a few questions and was looking to spend some money that night, but no one really seemed to take an interest in either of those facts. Someone did carry the case of booze out to my car, but other than that, nothing too special about this place. They seemed to have a good selection of wine, but kind of hit or miss for what I was looking. DO NOT BUY FINE WINE FROM THIS PLACE! They purposesly buy wines that are past their prime and sell them for top dollar. And to add insult to injury you get a nice smirk upon check out, as if when they see the bottle they know how bad it is, and that you are being duped. Small but varied wine selection that encompasses a vast number of varietals, regions and price points. Do you like craft beer? I do. This place is my local craft beer haven. The selection is absolutely ridiculous for such a small shop. You can walk into the refrigerated section, and you'll find even MORE options than what's visible in the main part of the store. You can walk in and ask for a specific brew, and they will find it for you. If they don't have it, they'll order it. They have a great selection of local brews and are very knowledgeable about the beers. They offer great suggestions with a little guidance from you, and they have free tastings every Friday evening. The staff is friendly, incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and polite. They really care about their store and treat customers with the utmost care. I live a few houses down from this place, but even if I lived further away, this would still be my go-to spot. It can't be beat when it comes to unique, tasty, enjoyable brews! read more

This is our neighborhood liquor store and favorite Davis square spots. The shop is well organized with lots of great stuff. They have tastings every Friday for wine, beer and cheese - the wines they sample are usually under $12, which is awesome.
