I went in for a diagnostic ($65) since I've been having a compiling list of issues with my car, including "system too lean" codes, vibrating and lurching at idle, getting stuck at high RPMs even when it should shift down, locking steering wheel, and radio cutting out. The service reps were kind and grounded and exactly what I had hoped based on other reviews: suggesting doing what is needed to get and keep my car in good shape without assuming the worst is wrong (and most expensive to fix). While it still may be the worst, they encouraged me to start with what's cost-effective and most likely the problem. We shall see if it does the job! Bottom line: I appreciate not being upsold for up front at a cost to my wallet and the landfills. It still may be bigger issues like a torque converter, but let's start with the O2 sensor (I already did the MAF myself), intake manifold gasket, valve gasket cover, and belt tensioner (and belt while we are at it). I will note that my battery recently died in the cold and the nearby Autozone diagnosed it as a bad alternator but Ballenger's said there's no indication of that, so not to replace it. See? I'm a first-time customer. I visited Ballenger's and was very comfortable with their honest feedback on what to do and what not to do for some high-mileage service, so I scheduled an appointment. A few hours after I dropped my vehicle off, I received a courtesy phone call from Jaime informing me that their mechanic had broken a small return valve. He apologized for the mishap and said the car would be ready a day later than expected because a new replacement part had to be ordered. When the car was picked up, I was surprised to have been charged for replacing the valve their mechanic had broken. The cost was a little over $25. At that point, I learned a lesson. The experience was enough for me to make an internal decision not to patronize the establishment in the future. From a customer's point of view, it seems unusual to pass along a human error to the customer. I did not sign any terms and conditions before dropping the keys off, nor do I recall seeing any written policy on the wall informing the customer that they are liable for the mechanic's error. This raises the question--if the mechanic were to erroneously break a much more expensive piece of equipment on your vehicle, are you liable for its replacement? When the car was picked up and the cost to replace the valve was invoiced on the final bill, it was questioned; no legit policy was cited, and their response was generic. In other words, suck it up. One final note: Jaime's apology acknowledges the mistake. Thank you; I appreciate it! But if you want to do right by the customer, eat the $25 cost or find some common ground that is agreeable for all parties; don't just pass on someone's error to the customer. read more

Been a customer for approximately 20+ years. In my opinion they're top notch. In an industry where anything can happen when you're trying to remove parts that are old, in heat all the time and become brittle sometimes you're "surprised " by an unexpected add-on part or 2 but they're upfront about it. They only charge their cost of the part if such a thing happens. Always a good experience with these guys. Fair pricing for a good service. I came in for a safety inspection and was told 4 customers were ahead of me. When I asked how long until my turn they said it would be an hour. I was instructed to wait in my car. After waiting for an hour and a half, there were still others ahead of me. I left in frustration. You need to make appointments. read more

Ballenger's found that the issue was not this part at all but a more common switch that was replaced and took care of the issue for about $70 in labor. Let me start off with something positive. At no time during my dealings with Ballenger's was I ever treated with overt verbal disrespect. They were never profane, and I suppose that should count for something. That said, if ever in a situation where you are able to get your car to any other mechanic within a stone's throw of Berryville or Winchester, I would strongly advise you to do so. The sheer truth of Ballenger's is that they use disreputable vendors for their parts and instead of transferring the savings to you, they use it as a means of price gouging. If the replacement parts they dredged from their questionable salvagers don't cut mustard, then no worries - you'll only be subject to their mark-up and have to pay for their mistakes when they have to re-order parts. Their ability to assess and identify symptoms related to your car's problems is questionable. They may get the problem right, but their solutions are tantamount to identifying someone's chronic gout and attempting to solve it with a bottle of Tums. I'm not sure if they've ever solved gout with Tums, but I know for a fact that they did not solve my engine problems with the haphazard frankenstein monstrosity they installed in my car. I was coming back to them a mere month later in order to get hoses replaced from the engine job that they performed. Guess what? I still had to pay for their mistakes. The prime reason that I am rating Ballenger's with one star is that they are unable to amend their own mistakes. If they screw up, the cost is yours, not theirs. That is the long and short of it. If you want to incur the cost of their inability to find adequate parts for your vehicle, or to fix a substantial issue, then please, use Ballenger's. If you want to spend months with your car in a shop without any substantial improvement, save its ability to drive far enough for them to issue an invoice, then please use Ballenger's. But if you want your car fixed with a modicum of competency, expediency and straight shootin', then pay your tow truck company the extra five dollars to keep on driving. read more

I have used Ballenger's a couple of times, for services and inspections. So far so good. they got me in pretty quickly. They were courteous, prompt, did good work on my cars, and their prices were very good. Did not try to talk me, (a woman), into services/repairs I did not need. Honest and efficient. The owner thinks she can get away with ripping off anyone. Knowing a lawsuit will be tied up in court for up to 10 years. With court cost and legal fees adding up to $50,000. The poor people of Winchester Virginia can't afford that. All we wanted was a honest mechanic who actually fixes our vehicles. read more
