What can I say..it is the metro! As is the case with most of the metro stations, the ceilings and train platforms are just picturesque, maybe good for photo ops. I've been through this station a few times for years. The signage makes it very easy to navigate through this station. Both the silver and orange lines stop here. I didn't have much interaction with staff, but she was friendly when I asked a question. It was relatively well-kept. There are 2 flights of stairs/escalators to enter/exit the station. For a Saturday, the station wasn't terribly busy inside or even outside. read more

Ballston has an okay Metro Station. It has a location close to downtown Arlington. Marymount University is also here. A few places around it to eat. The station is mostly clean and kept up. Here you can get off in Arlington. It serves the Orange and Silver Lines. This is one place to make a transfer. After this is East Falls Church. The station to the east is Rosslyn. Also here is a college. Marymount University is a small college so the station doesn't get a whole lot of students. It can get crowded some times of course. There's a few good hotels around here. It seems good for getting to Arlington. Pretty good location. There's some good casual restaurants for a fast stop. read more

One of the under ground stations on the shared Orange and Silver Line, Ballston could use a few more light bulbs if you ask me. It's easy enough to navigate with escalators, elevators and stairs between the street level, ticketing level and the platform. This is a split platform station, with the trains passing through in the center so that the doors of the cars open on the right. At the moment, there is only one exit but another one is planned to be built and open in 2018 The "MU" in the station's name is for nearby Marymount University. The station is between East Falls Church and Virginia Square - GMU on the Orange and Silver Lines. read more

Maybe it's me, Are all these Metro subway stations fashioned after a fallout shelter? Listen, I am the king of all the finest NYC transportation systems. Here's what tripped me out using your Metro system. - You better be good at math! If I want a round trip anywhere on the system, I need to buy a ticket and double the price. Yeah, try adding after a few drinks - Why can't I use my train ticket on the bus system? I left a restaurant and saw the bus stop right outside. I gotta pay a fair to ride the bus? NYC for the win! - Your trains look like an old Disneyworld monorail car from the 70s. - I can ride the NYC subway ANYWHERE for $2 and change. Better count those coins if you want to change your destination on the Metro I liked the Ballston-MU Metro Station. Ballston Metro I been using it over 30 years. It get better and better. Quick history All the building was not here 1987, Hotel and apartments was Metro land and bus stops. Small houses and small family run store. Even a glass coke bottle was in the coke machine. :) All this place was dug up and slowly replace with what they have now. Here my review. Ballston Metro is good. Service is good until they do track work. The Metro elevator location on the end of the station. Also the you have to exit the station on the platform. So if you need help it hard to get a hold of a metro manager. But over all great service. Pray the subway is on time. If you have a smart phone check out the apps for on the min with the train when the next train coming. Also they upgrade the station and added two more elevator. Metro should have plan with a third track for express trains. Hope you enjoy the review. read more

Why else would she have chosen to ignore me AT THE EXACT MOMENT i approached the window, unless she already knew I needed assistance? She read my mind, knew what I wanted, and choose not to help me BEFORE I even had the chance to ask. She did not sanction my existence as a human being. Instead of making eye contact with me, she quickly reprioritized her job duties, which consisted of counting loose change. She sifted through more pennies, nickels, and dimes than a CoinStar. Watching her was like watching a first grader use change to work a math problem. If she were Storm, she could've it rain so hard, Lil Wayne would've need an umbrella. I haven't seen that much change since Obama's Presidential campaign. Briefly, I entertained the possibility that I was an X-men. What if the reason why she was acting like she couldn't see me was because she, in fact, couldn't see me?? What if I had the gift of invisibility?? What if I was invisible, and the only way she knew I was there was because she could read minds?? #mindblown The thought of being invisible detonated in my mind when I was acknowledged by the second woman. When I asked about my missing keys, she moved so fast that I never even saw her move. Clearly, her gift is super speed. She has moves faster than Quicksilver and Flash Gordon combined, and any Kenyan that I've seen run track in the Olympics. The speed at which her chair accelerated was so quick, that the only way the revolution could be quantified would be if Shadowcat phased into Stephen Hawking's consciousness, and took him back to 1915 to collaborate with Albert Einstein. The only indication she gave me she had moved with the release of air she expelled from her lungs when she answered, "Mmmmm no." Okay, so the only reason I'm really reviewing this is because I live roughly between the Ballston and Virginia Square Metro stations, so clearly I have a choice as to where I want to go. I'm also writing this because I'm sure at least some of you reading this are looking for apartments that are Metro accessible, and might actually gain some value out of reading this. Ballston is probably the last inbound Orange Line stop where you have at least a fleeting chance of grabbing some wood (grabbing a chair, you perv!) in the morning. That, and the fact that this is the furthest-out station in VA where you can ditch the auto and live car-free (if you choose to do so) are the main factors here. Also, they've upgraded and added some new elevators, so if you rely on a wheelchair/cane/crutches, the layout is very considerate to you. I can see that being a factor if you're looking to relocate somewhere that's accommodating to special needs. The cons... minor, but worth noting: It's a popular spot for touristas to get on, so expect a lot of standing to the left during rush hour. Since it's Metro's fault for not making "stand to the right/walk to the left" clearer, I really can't blame them. I've never seen a greater convergence of podpeople (iPod zombies) at any other station. Tune in, tune out, zonk out. Apparently that Slipknot remix supersedes all else, including basic concepts like "putting one foot in front of the other" and "not taking up space." Expect to have to juke like the lovechild of Jerry Rice and Tiki Barber if you're in a hurry. Most importantly, if the Metro's running behind (aka "normal operating hours"), this is the station in the AM where the logjam occurs. I've actually had to get on the Vienna side in the morning sometimes and hike out to Hell's Half Acres, VA (incorporated 1824) just so I could get someplace to stand going back to the city. Adding insult to injury, overcrowding prior to Ballston doesn't stop the GS-4-Lyfe crowd from, well, even MORE overcrowding the train. Dude, it's the GOVERNMENT. You'll get laid at a Star Trek convention before you get fired for being a couple of minutes late from the guv. C'mon man, don't make the operator hit the Randi "Step Back" Miller button again! Seriously, you can only cram so much commuter into the train, so just chill until the next one gets here. The verdict: It's a Metro station. It enables you to get from point A to point B. At the same time, though, it's in an ideal enough location to make it stand out more than other stations. Plus, it doesn't smell like pee, which seems to permeate stations like Metro Center and Wheaton. Protip: Ballston represent!!! A working bathroom! The other day, I was on the Orange line and it was taking forever (scheduled track work), so I had to hop off the Metro at Ballston to find a restroom. I asked the stationmaster for a restroom. He let me go out the emergency exit after pointing out where to go. I got to the door. It was locked. I went back to the stationmaster. He unlocked it for me. But this gets four stars for having a restroom! Ballston Metro has been much improved over the years. Despite the thousands of riders using this stop, it's still usable. And now they've added more elevators to different sides of the above-ground world. Also, you can get to Ballston Mall with only a few moments exposed (on the sides) to the elements. read more

This metro station is serviced by the orange and silver lines, and is very conveniently located in a vibrant part of Northern Virginia. Alighting here puts me within walking distance of a lot of my favorite fast-casual restaurants and cafés (Philz, Dirt, Cava, etc.). The station is relatively clean and functional, and I found it easy to navigate. It also wasn't too busy the times I used it, even in the evenings, and since there was more than 1 line, I never had to wait a particularly long time for a train to come through. I usually felt safe traveling to/from here, but I only ever used this station in the summer when it's light out longer, so that might have helped. There is free wifi at this station. read more

I hate going to this metro station during rush hour. It's one of the busier stations because a lot of people live around here, but since I live in between Ballston and Virginia Square, I vastly prefer to use the VA Square station during commute times. VA Square doesn't have cell service in the station, but the cell service is unusable at peak hours in Ballston anyway because of the huge crowds. It takes so much longer to get from the street level here to the platform compared to Virginia Square. I've missed countless trains that I feel are within reach because of this journey to the platforms! The other crappy thing is that the walk from the platform to the street is a wind tunnel which is super uncomfortable in the winter. If you're lucky enough to have someone drop you off or pick you up at the station, this isn't the station for you because it's completely surrounded by bus stops, traffic, and pedestrians. I understand the necessity and convenience of this station, but just prefer not to use it when possible. read more

Clean and well maintained station on WMATA Orange line. This station has high traffic since it is the gateway to Falls Church and South Arlington. It has a good network of buses right outside the station. Plus as others have mentioned - lots of places for morning coffee and bagel around the metro station. read more

Very close to National Science Foundation. Hotels, shops, conference facilities all within a couple of blocks, plus some pretty good eats and drinks (e.g. Rock Bottom Brewery in the nearby mall). I got into town just after dark and walked from Ballston Metro a few blocks to the Westin and felt safe and comfortable. read more

It's a great rail system, in general, but Ballston is the most comfortable stop of all I've encountered. Only 4 stars because yeah, sometimes it smells and at least once a week, I have to make physical contact with a total douche. Other than that, I'm on board. read more

This is a very convenient station dropping you off in the midst of the business district and only a short stroll from the shopping mall. Plenty of nearby services, restaurants and parking. You can actually get out of the station without getting wet and the exit links into the covered entrance of the office building over the station. read more

It's just another train station, but with a twist if you're on a bike, or lugging a suitcase, or too lazy to stand and let an escalator carry you into the bowels of the earth. There are multiple elevators and god only knows if you got on the right one to descend. Maybe there are signs, but there was sweat in my eyes, and my poor cycle and I wound up on the wrong side of the tracks. The same fate befell the lady who had the misfortune to be scrunched into the lift with me and my 30 miles of grit and sweat. There is signage upon exiting for either North or South Fairfax Drive, but last time I checked the road runs east-west paralleling Wilson. This stop is insanely hectic for a non-transfer point, especially since it is only a few blocks from the mysterious Virginia Square station, which might as well be Wonka's factory since no one goes in, and no one comes out. read more

It's a good station that doesn't usually have single tracking affect it. The way to get down to go towards DC is a bit counter intuitive. The flexibility to take the orange and silver line is nice. Usually it's not one of the busier station so it's easy to get a seat from here. The escalators to go down from seat level are sometimes an adventure. read more

A very busy Metro station but I go here (instead of the equi-distance from my apartment VA Square station) because it is often the last stop where you can squeeze on in the morning rush hour. There are always police officers near the turnstiles at this station so if you're trying to get a free Metro ride, I wouldn't get on or off at this station. read more

One of the more busier metro stops. Very close to Starbucks if you need a morning pick me up :-) Also, everything is within walking distance to include the Ballston Mall, Chipotle, Cosi, 711, and IHOP! Has two sets of escalators and there is a strong wind gust that always hits you once you pass the 1st set of escalators. Stayed at Massanutten Resort Aug 2011. Planned a day trip into DC. Read reviews of Vienna-Fairfax GMU parking being filled at 8 am. Saw a review here to try this area. We drove into Arlington and parked at the parking lot under the Hilton (Fairfax Dr and N Stafford Street). It connects to the Ballston MU station through the hotel. Paid $8 for 12 hour parking. Easy into/out of DC. Clean. Bathroom available with request to metro personnel. Metro station manager helped us purchase our tickets (get one pass for each person in your party and don't throw them away after you enter the subway ... you need to enter them again at the exit turnstyles at your final destination). read more

This metro station is pretty quiet and not that crowded. It's underground so it can feel a little dingy and sketchy. But I like that it's not crowded and I don't have to deal with a ton of people when I ride from here. This station only services this Orange line which is convenient for me since that's the line I used most often. It also means you don't have to pay too much attention to which train you get on since there is only one color here. read more

The last station for the orange line in the direction of Vienna in the yuppie corridor of Wilson blvd. Ballston is a good mix of high end apartment and condos with a shopping mall/movie theater only 3 blocks from the entrance with office space in the area as well. Nightlife isn't as good as Clarendon here, you'll need to either walk, bike, take a bus, or jump on the train to Clarendon or D.C. for all the action. read more
