Balzac's Powerhouse is a really beautiful location with open space and dine-in. I came here to get a cup of matcha latte and to study/meet-up with a friend. It's worth mentioning that power outlets aren't allowed for use so if you're looking for a cafe to study or for some work on your laptop, this place isn't ideal. As for the food and drink, the latte itself tasted mostly like hot milk lacking matcha flavor and the lemon tart was overly sour. The almond croissant was tasty though. If I come here again, I'll probably just get a regular coffee and the croissant. read more

Note: Street parking, relatively easy to come by during my visit. Located within blocks of condo townhouses, this Balzac's - as with all the other locations that I've been to - is in a historical GE building. Interior is elegant (marble counters, high ceilings) with some country touches. I'm not sure whether it's the location or time of day, but even though the café was to capacity, it wasn't noisy or bustling like Starbucks. Clientele seemed more mature, lotsa young couples with babies - who don't stay, people working on laptops, and older people. Barista seemed friendly. Coffee is good. There is self-serve water. Wished there was one of these closer to me! read more

Balzacs are generally a step above in ambience, but this location is now my favorite. Airy and spacious, plenty of electrical power outlets with USB, WiFi tested at 100/14. This location fits about 30 people plus a patio. For parents, there is a large playground across the street. All around good option. read more

This is a gorgeous spot and maybe my experience isn't normal but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. This coffee spot has taken over a historical building and the bones of the place is just stunning. Much care has been given to restore and take advantage of the bricks and features. There is no issues whatsoever on the atmosphere... clean, pristine, beautiful, lots of light, and lots of tables. You cannot ask for a nicer cafe in Toronto. The problem would be the actual coffees... you know, the things you come here for. Service is nice but I dont think they trained up their staff well enough to let them man the entire place themselves but that's what happened. Only one nice person behind the counter who couldnt answer most questions about their food offering and doesnt know how to do a flat white or matcha latte. It should have been my warning sign that they couldnt tell me anything about the food but I was hopeful. Matcha Latte - the colour of this was a pale yellow green... so pale that it didnt even look green with altering the image in edits. Unfortunately in addition to be super watery and diluted, the chunks of undissolved matcha powder at the botton was a side sight. 2/5 Flat white - Another casualty unfortunately. This one was watery as well and not full flavoured as it should be. Closer to a diluted latte. 2/5 Cappuccino (another day) - Much better but there was something off with the flavour. It was definitely more acidic than it should be. Not watery but not the best. 3/5 I want to give a higher rating cause it's such a pretty place this is a coffee spot and with that in mind, I dont think this place is putting it's focus on the drinks as much as the instagram aesthetics. read more

Went in for the Citrus Boost, it tastes amazing and really helps when I'm feeling a little under the weather. When I arrived, there was one customer conversing with the barista. As I approach the counter, the barista at the cash just looks at me, doesn't say anything. So I started off with saying hi, to which I received no answer. The interaction was very dry and unimpressive. The barista on bar was polite and had a warm smile. That aside, she made my drink great. I wouldn't come back to this location, but I'd go to another Balzac's for the Citrus Boost. read more

Balzac's Powerhouse location is located around Dupont/Lansdowne. The cafe is somewhat hidden if you don't know where it is or live around the area. I've gone to this location several times and always find that the staff was very friendly and attentive, the drinks are good, and that there is plenty of seating if you are looking for a quiet place to work. Moreover, the decor is on point and I have definitely taken a few pictures of the pretty interior! read more

Another location added to the growing family that Balzac already has. This coffee shops located in what used to be a PowerHouse right beside the heritage Foundry Lofts on Landsdowne (just north of the main intersection Lansdowne and DuPont). Great ambience and unique decor make this location another gem where you can come, sit, relax either alone or with your friends. The quality of the coffee and the service is in line with the rest of the other location so if you are in the area, a visit is worthwhile. read more

This place is very hit or miss in terms of espresso based beverages. Sometimes it's an amazing cup of coffee and sometimes I can't even drink it. I do enjoy the baked food from there and had an eggnog latte over the holidays that was delicious. Overall I think there are better, more consistent places in the neighbourhood. read more

I know, I know - Balzac's is aplenty in Toronto. All of them are beautiful. All of them have the same menu, same slightly-overpriced lattes, free wi-fi. They're all great. What makes this one so special? Located just off of Landsdowne and just south of St. Clair, this Balzac's Coffee is quite literally buried in the middle of the Landsdowne neighborhood, in the middle of the housing complex, making it a bit quieter than the other locations near major tourist traps (Distillery, St. Lawrence Market, the library, etc.). This means seats are generally aplenty, and it is never overly crowded or loud. They also play their music at a reasonable level compared to other coffee shops that frequently play it a little too loud. I love coming here on a weekend to read or work on a paper for school, because going to any other location generally means fumbling through a crowd or simply taking my coffee to go. The staff here is wonderful - while some other reviewers may have claimed to run into unfriendly people, I've consistently had friendly and fast service. Ever staff member has given me recommendations, has made small talk with me, made me feel welcome. Sure, their coffee is a bit expensive - but what isn't anymore in Toronto? Their coffee is delicious though, and through their comforts, Balzac's Powerhouse has given me a small home away from home to hide away when things start to feel a little crazy out in the world. read more

I went in for the first time yesterday. I've been to the Liberty Village location and the one in Ryerson's campus, and the Powerhouse location is my favourite. It's so beautiful inside, with marble top tables, friendly service, and not too much clutter.
