We wanted more caffeine last Saturday, so I looked up Haven Brews not too far from my place. The ratings were high, the photos looked great, and I figured it'd be a safe bet -- so I brought my partner along expecting solid coffee. After trying my vanilla iced latte and my partner's macchiato... I wondered if this place might actually be better known for food or matcha, based on what I've seen in other reviews - the coffee was not good. The espresso beans seemed to be over-roasted, which were quite bitter for our liking as opposed to something more subtly chocolatey and nutty. My iced latte also got watery pretty quickly as the ice melted it seemed, and ended up tasting more like the kind of latte you'd get from a fast-food chain (or the espresso shot was way too long). A bit of a letdown, especially since the two fairly small drinks came to about $18. The space itself is cozy, and I really like the vinyl collection (which earned the 2 stars). That said, the records are noticeably pricey compared to typical vinyl shops like Sonic Boom. A lot of them -- even ones with just Side A -- were priced at $55 and up. I didn't cross-check the barcodes on Discogs, but while I love the curation (especially the focus on Japanese jazz and city pop -- really cool stuff), I find it hard to believe all of them are rare pressings worthy of those $55-to-several-hundred-dollar price tags. I've passed this spot so much, but managed to take some time during a day off to stop in. There were a few customers in the shop, both indoors and out, deep in conversation, doing some work on their laptops or just simply reading a book. They have a display of records that are available for purchase as well. The atmosphere was very laid back and pleasant to spend some time in your day to work or relax. I had a matcha latte with almond milk this time and I was pleasantly surprised, a perfect level of sweetness, and not to mention the foam! I had no idea this was possible with almond milk! Haven Brews just recently celebrated their 1st anniversary! They're (mainly) a coffee shop in the Yonge and Finch-ish area. I'd say 95% of their menu is coffee, but there are some pastries and a small offering of food items like sandwiches and croffles. I love that they have a small board called Nourish a Neighbour (@neighbourlinkny @giftlocalto). You can purchase a meal and/or drink for a neighbour facing food insecurity and pin it to the board. Haven Brews also supports local vendors and artists by hosting community art events and marketplaces. read more

I've always wanted to try this cute cafe but never got a chance because it's not close by. Finally came on a weekday thinking there would be less people. The cafe was half full but the parking lot was completely full! We drove around twice and almost wanted to leave then noticed someone leaving. It's a medical centre (?) so be careful because you're not allowed to park on any of the streets. I heard you could park underground but limited visitors parking space. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly barista. We got to pick our own beans for the latte and for pour over, it was the same but from 8 different flavours. We picked Columbia Paradise Pink Bourbon. The barista told us it would be a fruity flavour with a hint of strawberry. We sat by the bar table and watched the owner. He came over to let us smell the beans (omg strong strawberry smell) and he would taste the pour over to make sure it was to his satisfaction. It came in a cute sake bottle and cup. He told us depending on which side of the sake cup you drink from (thin vs thick), it would give us a different experience. It was true! We never thought it would taste completely different. I would definitely recommend trying their pour over for a next level experience! They also offer latte art and pour over lessons if anyone is interested. I believe it's every two months for $99. This is a kind of cafe I would expect to find on the eastern half of Yonge Street, or more specifically in Scarborough or Markham. Instead it's on the western half of Yonge (Finch West near Bathurst), providing a coffee shop presence in this quiet chunk of suburban Toronto and we're all better for it. Haven Brews aims to be a place of community. To that effect the welcoming ambiance is reinforced with its hosting of various community and arts events and markets from time to time. Most days you'll find the cafe full of patrons socializing and studying, working on stuff or even working on some arts and crafts. Some small baked goods and sandwiches are sold alongside coffee drinks, all faced by a highly friendly team. It feels like a Hong Kong coffee shop blended with a hipster Toronto coffee shop. They also sell LPs (Flow Records), found at the back. It's one of the more unique record stores in Toronto, both for its geographic location and musical focus (Japanese city pop and jazz and Asian imports, with some western indie rock/pop mixed in--and an occasional Taylor Swift album). They started participating in Record Store Day in 2024. All in all overall the place is more cafe than record store (unlike Press Vinyl Cafe on Danforth, which functions on a similar premise but is more record store than cafe). read more

*Soft opening* Location should be 222 Finch Ave *WEST* It was a nice concept of providing community service as an operating coffee shop. Service is friendly; they specialize in coffee - espresso drinks and pour over (hand drip). Coffee beans are sourced from Canadian roasters. The barista are experienced and have good knowledge on coffee and beans. It would be a great place for coffee lovers. North York / Scarborough is missing cafe serving pour over coffee and go there if you enjoy speciality coffee. Ambiance is relax and chill. They have nice music and there is a section of vinyls and I am not sure if they are for sale. The space is very spacious and lots of sunlights. There are plenty of sittings for solo, small groups, big groups. Price is very reasonable and very chill place to enjoy coffees. read more
