I have been craving Chinese food for 2 days now. Mondays apparently are the wrong days to decide to order Chinese food. My main place I go to and another place that has good reviews are both closed Monday. All a girl wants is some fried deliciousness and it was a big production. I selected Bamboo China. I haven't been here in years. I ordered the lunch portion of the sweet and sour chicken. It came with soup. I decided to go with hot and sour. I also ordered an egg roll. The sweet and sour sauce was thicker than I'm used to and more on the sour side, which was fine. It was just a different flavor. The sweet and sour chicken was good and crispy. The rice was ok. It wasn't as flavorful as my preferred Chinese takeout place that is closed Mondays. The egg roll was good too. Would I come back here? Certainly on a Monday I would, but I am sticking with my main places that I enjoy. And hope I don't crave Chinese food on a Monday ever again.

Never seen Szechuan beef look like this. 從來沒有看過四川牛長這樣的。

Service was decent, said they would change my white rice into pork fried rice free of charge but my main dish, the Szechuan Beef does not take like a Szechuan Beef at all. No peppers at all, not spicy, taste very watered down and not flavorful.

We recently moved, and decided to try our first pass at Chinese takeout in our new neighborhood. Bamboo China is nearby, and conveniently located next to Tops. So I went there to order at the counter, and zipped over to Tops for a few things while our food was made. The restaurant itself seemed clean enough, and typical of a somewhat dive'y but somewhat charming Chinese takeout place. The gentleman who greeted me when I walked in was sweet and friendly, as was the woman with him, I was getting the sense they are perhaps the married owners of the restaurant. I ordered four pretty standard Chinese takeout dishes: General Tso's, Chicken Lo Mein, Sweet & Sour Chicken and Chicken & Broccoli. The bill came to $48. That's a bit steep. It took less than 15 minutes to prepare everything, and it was boxed up nicely to bring home. The food itself was good, definitely not bad, but no standouts either. It was typical Chinese takeout food. I had the Chicken & Broccoli, which I always ask to have done in garlic sauce. It was spicier than usual. And it seemed like the container was heavy on the rice, and somewhat skimpy on the main dish. My husband enjoyed his General Tso's, but did have a couple odd crunchy bites that were off-putting. The kids had no complaints about the other dishes, but nothing that knocked socks off either. So our first experience at Bamboo China was alright. Nothing to completely turn us off from getting Bamboo China again from time to time, nothing that will have us running back in either. Plus the bill was was too high. There are other Chinese takeout options nearby that we will eventually try too, but will probably be back into Bamboo China as well, primarily because of the convenient location for us.

Used to be great food but not for the price anymore. It is mostly all vegetable filler with little scraps of meat. Half of it was broccoli!

I was seated and immediately served complimentary tea, and fried wontons with sweet and sour sauce. I ordered the Kung Pao lunch special which comes with a choice of egg roll or soup, and white or vegetable friend rice. I chose the wonton soup and fried rice, and I ordered an egg roll as well. The egg roll came out quickly, and the lunch special was served right when I finished that. The food was good and the dish was spicy (Kung Pao is supposed to be spicy but it never is-- not for me) and the service was polite. When the check came it was accompanied by a plate with two slices of orange and a fortune cookie. The only thing I didn't like about the visit was that there was an advertisement for a big commercial law firm on the back of the fortune slip and the "lucky number" was the phone number. I thought that was tacky. I walked out at 1:15pm. Great, quick lunch.

And a lunch menu. Wow! I just gave my receipt another look and the people are nicer than I thought. I thought they were pleasant, friendly, happy we were there, concerned that we would enjoy our visit. The lunch menu offerings were each $10.95 and included eggroll OR soup, and white or vegetable fried rice. Daughter ordered the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus an appetizer order of steamed dumplings. I ordered Eggplant with Pork in Garlic sauce with eggroll and white rice, plus a small bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. The soup on the appetizer menu was $3.95. My receipt shows the server put the soup as my lunch choice and charged $2.95 for the eggroll. She never said a word, didn't point out that I could save a dollar by switching the sides around. So the people are all I thought plus kind and conscientious. Marvelous. I was delighted with everything I ate. The entree was enough for two, so supper came home with me. The eggroll was fresh and crisp and non-greasy, seemed homemade. Excellent. The eggplant was perfectly prepared and cooked, as was the pork. Delicious. The hot and sour soup was easily one of the best I've had, and I'm always looking for a great hot and sour soup. Coming from downtown Buffalo, we'd been in Williamsville because I had an appointment on Essjay Rd. Afterward, we looked for a place to have lunch before shopping. Finding Golden Hill at 4001 Sheridan Dr. in Amherst was pure serendipity. You can bet, though, that I will visit again after next appointment.

The servings are definitely smaller than other places and the quality is not that great. The flavors seemed off. I've had these dishes and soups numerous timed from multiple other Chinese restaurants throughout WNY but this place just had very odd flavors and strange consistency to the food. The Hot and Sour soup was lacking flavor and had snot-like clumps in it. The chicken soup with mei fun noodles tasted bitter, almost spoiled or massive amounts of rice vinegar in it. The triple delight combo container was 85% rice and 15% triple delight (very small serving of the entree). The veggie dish and Happy Family were lackluster in flavor and the containers were not filled all the way (only about 3/4 of the way full). There are seats and about 6 tables inside and plenty of parking in the plaza parking lot. The staff is friendly and have everything ready in the usual 10 to 15 minutes. This place works if you are desperate, don't mind weird flavors or lack of flavor, and enjoy getting less than the container can hold. Otherwise, stay away from this place, there are many other Chinese restaurants in the area that are much better.

He included a fortune cookie for dessert. I have been getting food here for years. When my kids were sick, and we had to cancel our Thanksgiving plans last minute, they were open. We were thankful. The owners live in the neighborhood, so we would see them watching fireworks at UB. They used to have a large, handwritten Chinese menu on a whiteboard on the wall. You know they are good, like when you see Italians in an Italian restaurant. They serve others who know what's good. I couldn't read the white board, but sometimes I would ask her for something off that menu. She would ask a few questions to narrow it down. Yes, it was good. :) They also serve typical American General Tso's, etc. My favorite is their shrimp egg foo young, without the gravy. We moved away, and I can't find a place we like nearly as well.

Although the dim sum menu is a single page, there are enough different kinds of foods here that even the pickiest of eaters will find something to satisfy them. Vegetarians and vegans will be happy here too. I was really pleased to see that hot and cold soy milks are offered: This restaurant caters to the Asian community, many of whom are lactose-intolerant. The bao are $5.50 - $6.50 for a steamer basket of 3-5 items; it's listed on the menu how many bao to expect, in case you're dining with a crowd. (And you really should!) The congee is listed as "small bowls" for $7.50, but I think at least 3-4 cups of soup fits there. It's easily shared. The stuffed eggplant I ate in Nanjing had ground pork, garlic scapes, and ginger. The ones served here are stuffed with an enormous sweet shrimp in each piece of tender eggplant: Better than I remember. The sesame balls were a little different too: I remember a pale, sweet paste inside a crispy deep-fried ball covered in sesame seeds. Here, the inner paste was sweet and black, but the flavor was the same. So was the joy in eating them. The pork with black bean sauce was so tender and delicious! We made that plate disappear! The har gow/crystal shrimp were perfect. We plan to return soon to try their spicy beef noodles ($13.95) and custard tarts - the recipe for which the Portuguese Jesuits brought to Macao in the 16th century. The atmosphere of the Golden Duck is very relaxed: A dim sum meal is usually a time to drink a little tea, eat a little food, and get caught up with family or friends. There's a full bar if you're celebrating; there's also a private banquet room. The regular menu is also available during the dim sum hours, as is a Mongolian buffet. The regular menu has Peking duck, available with some notice. My favorite celebration meal! Parking is in a strip mall lot, well off the street.
