Tucked away in the mall village, this place is definitely worth the hunt. Small but cool vibe, excellent service and above average food quality. In terms of Des Moines sushi, well above average freshness and presentation (by far the best sushi in Iowa is Sushiya in North Liberty). We ordered spicy edamame which was just okay, and the "spicy" meant a little chili powder sprinkled on a few bean pods. We ordered the sushi boat and it's just about right for 2 hungry people or 3 "pickers", but for $50 it's an exceptional sushi value. This gem sits hidden in a shopping center close to Jordan Creek Town Center. They have availability for dine-in! The food was delicious. I have never had spicy edamame and able to have mild, spicy and extreme. I don't care for my food to have much kick so mild was enough spice for me. Even the duck sauce that tagged along with the Crab Rangoon had a nice punch. My husband selected the orange chicken. I recommend this dish as the chicken was cooked perfectly - nice and crispy. Got into town just as happy hour was ending at the Drury Inn. The GM recommended Banana Leaf for great Asian food. He was correct! Bonus: it's about 20 steps away from the Drury! Pad Thai was delightful. Hubs really enjoyed his General Tso Chicken and Tom Yum soup! They accommodated my shellfish allergy graciously, and the menu lists gluten free and can be made gluten free choices. The little fortune rolls are just a bit of sweet (they don't taste like the run of the mill fortune cookies) after a delicious meal! Great dinner tonight! After driving 700 miles today, we chose Banana Leaf for dinner. It was terrific. We started with the Fuji Mountain roll which was gorgeous and tasted even better. I had the Drunken Noodles based on a mother reviewer's recommendation and it was delicious! My husband ordered an Udon special that was also very good. This place was a truly pleasant experience! We shared a roll of spicy tuna sushi and it was delicious. I had the Pad Thai and my boyfriend had the Angry Veggie rice dish. It's really nice that they let you pick the spice level of any food. As someone with a severe gluten allergy, I had no problems eating any of the food. The pad Thai isn't usually GF but they altered it to make it Gf and it was wonderful. The ambiance was really chill and the service was quick. Good place for a date night. Ok, I have driven by this place a thousand times and looked past it... big mistake. It's amazing! We have eaten here 10+ times since discovering how good it is. We have actually even gone there two nights in a row. Try: Pineapple fried rice Cashew chicken The sushi is all great Healthy fried rice Papaya salad (They're also willing to make just about anything or adjust existing choices on the menu) They are so polite and the food is so fresh. I was looking forward to trying this place. Considering that Des Moines, when it comes to asian cuisine, is what I call Asian Con-fusion. Thai/Sushi/Chinese all in one restaurant!?! That is a disaster in the making. So I convinced myself to try this place, the restaurant looks nice on the inside and people gave it great reviews so why not? First the chicken pad thai: noodles were overcooked and clumpy, flavor was ok, but I also ordered it to be medium spice...it turned out to be on the sweet side with no spice. I also asked the server taking my order to give me thai chili sauce on the side for my pad thai and I didn't get it. Whats worse is that I had to repeat it 3 times to her, I get it if she is new but she had someone helping her. Again not difficult. The worst part of the meal was the sesame chicken. Chicken that was a clumpy mess, not fried enough, and very little sesame seeds. I also requested this dish to be hot at the highest level and it wasn't even close. Only reason I gave this place 2 stars was that the pad thai would have been fine if the noodles weren't overdone and if there was some spice to it. When you first walk in the thing that catches your eye first if the very organic feel with barn wood, plant walls, rope, and stone. It almost feels like you are in a courtyard with the open kitchen area in a building. The staff was very friendly and quick to seat us and get our menus and a nice beer and wine selection menu. Food was out quickly and was very fresh. A nice features is that you can select the spicy level from none to super hot. We were first brought out a starter of the clear broth vegetable soup and crab Rangoon, The soup was delicious! It was really light and had a nice rich flavor. The crab rangoon was very good as well, it had a ton of filling. They do also have a good selection of sushi, we will have to come back and try. But I ordered the Honey chicken, it was a nice sized portion on a bed of fried noodles with a side of rice and a few pieces of broccoli and carrot. It tasted pretty good I wish there was a bit more honey flavor. My husband ordered the sesame chicken, again it was good and served the the fried noodles, rice and vegetables. It wasn't the best we have ever had but certainty not the worst. Everything was a bit salty but it tasted good overall. The other complaint I would have is that it all tasted the same, there wasn't much of a difference in taste between the honey and sesame chicken. The prices were very reasonable! Under $20 for my husband and I for lunch, which is a plus. And I again love the decor of the place! Very organic feel, almost like you are sitting on a patio outside. read more

The sushi, noodle dishes (pad Thai and lo mein), and soups are what I have tried so far and have been delicious every time. I would also recommend trying the crab rangoons. Food is so flavorless and bad that it is borderline racist. Portions seem big but everything is cheaply made. Sushi rolls had so much rice and barely any fish. Rad nah noodles were undercooked and had absolutely not flavor at all. Was probably just a mixture of soy sauce and sugar. Being ethnic with taste buds is hard in Iowa. I just moved into the west Glenn area and was really excited to discover a sushi restaurant within walking distance of my apartment. I decided to take a look at the menu on Facebook and was even more excited when I saw the prices. Affordable sushi within walking distance...could be so bad but so good. I found 2 rolls that peaked my interest and decided to pull the trigger and order carry-out. I ordered the beef roll which is made up of: Grilled marinated beef, cucumber, asparagus, avocado and unagi sauce. And I also ordered the West Glen roll that is supposed to be made up of Tempura shrimp, asparagus, avocado, scallion, masago with spicy mayo on top. When I got home and opened my sushi it looked like it was going to be delicious. When I took the first piece of the beef roll unfortunately the beef did not taste marinated or grilled. The beef was chewy, really dry and super bland. I wasn't too disappointed though, because I mean it was beef sushi and I also had my west Glenn roll which was the roll I was most excited about anyway. Well unfortunately when I bit into my roll I discovered mango and chewy imitation crab...neither of which are in a west Glenn roll. After looking further the only items on this roll that were the same as the west Glenn roll was the asparagus and spicy mayo :( By the time I realized this, the restaurant was about to close. I don't particularly like fruit in my rolls so I just ended up throwing the rolls away. Unfortunately I have not found my "go to" sushi place in West Des Moines and I don't think I will be going back to Banana Leaf any time soon. read more

Banana Leaf has easily become one of my favorite restaurants in Des Moines. We were seated immediately and the waitress was very attentive and friendly. Overall, the service was great and the ambience was also nice -- pretty minimalistic and modern. The food was very fresh and the amount of vegan options was vast. The fresh spring rolls were so delicious we ordered a second round. Classic tom yum soup was very flavorful and the medium spice level was perfect. For an entree, I had the pad thai which came in a such a big portion I only finished half (took the rest home). Also would recommend the coconut juice! read more

Banana leaf is an excellent Thai restaurant in the west Des Moines area. It's comparable to Cool. I stopped in for lunch today and started off with crab Rangoon's and fried spring rolls. Both were very good and I would recommend both of them. Finished up with pineapple fired rice with a 3 spice level and sesame chicken with a 3 spice level as well. Overall the food was very good and anyone who likes spicy food would love this place highly recommended giving it a try if your in the area. read more

Pretty average Thai food; cozy interior with plenty of seating and a charming vibe; friendly, efficient and attentive staff. I stopped by here for a quick lunch during a trip to Des Moines. It was the start of a winter storm and some spicy Thai food was on my mind. I think it's always a bit of a gamble while deciding on the spice level at a Thai (or even Indian) restaurant, since the spice scale isn't always consistent and for some places, spicy means simply unloading a sh*t ton of Sriracha as a finishing touch. Thankfully, this wasn't one of those places! I was with my aunt and my little cousin, who doesn't eat a lot of spicy food, so we ordered the shrimp wonton soup, shrimp salad rolls and chicken pad thai. Portions were generous, but the food wasn't exactly steaming hot. The salad rolls were a filling, healthy choice, stuffed with vermicelli, large shrimp pieces and with a lettuce and rice paper outer shell. The accompanying trio of sauces - a generic spicy-sweet sauce, a chilli sauce with peanuts, and a peanut sauce really helped to inject some much needed flavour into all of our food. The pad thai was a let-down. We had asked for it to be mildly spicy, but I guess they took that to mean 'sweet', and no amount of chili garlic sauce could overcome the sweetness of the dish. I had a couple of spoonfuls of the wonton soup, and it was a good choice for the blizzard outside! My aunt and cousin seemed to really like the place though, and they live in Des Moines, so I guess they'll be back! read more

Their Pad Thai is so yummy, portions are good but it's a little on the pricey side and that I don't feel is justified. Crab Rangoon appetizer is delicious. Not a sushi connoisseur but my friend is and she thought their sushi was subpar. The atmosphere and decor is really inviting and cute, wait staff is very friendly and I like that the kitchen is kind of open-air and you can see what's going on. Dislike that it closes for a period of time during the day, but that's pretty standard w authentic oriental cuisine restaurants. I've been their twice now and only took pictures my first time their but I had ordered the chicken fried rice during dinner time. It was amazing! Great flavor and HUGE portions! The other time I went was during lunch which they had an awesome special. Any entree with 1 soup or the day and 1 app. I had ordered the orange chicken with 1 pork dumpling and a small cup of egg drop soup. Loved it! This is a place I will continue to support.
