I stopped here with a few coworkers over lunch. We were greeted and seated right away. As a table we ordered crab rangoons and egg rolls. Both were yummy and I would order again. I ordered the Mongolian beef and enjoyed it. It was very saucy which I love. It also comes with a side of white rice. My coworkers order the Pho and both ate all of it. Good service, good, food. I would definitely stop here again for lunch

I think I found my new favorite Asian restaurant. This place is a hidden gym not too far from downtown. The food is amazing, the best Pad Thai beef I've had to date! It's perfectly cooked with an amazing sauce that elevates it. The service was great, the waitress was nice and attentive. And I thought the prices were reasonable considering. Inside there is some seating, not a lot though. There is also not lots of parking out front. If you are looking for a place to eat with Greta food, run don't walk now! I have already been back.

Honestly, not much to look at on the outside, but the simple appearance should not keep you from a great Asian food experience in Des Moines. Soft drink are plentiful, however no alcohol at this location. The advantage of this restaurant is it's open all day long, without a break in the afternoon, for those who are looking for a snack in the middle of the day. Dedicated parking lot makes for easy access. Very simple decor allows their food to shine. I am not typically a big fan of crab ragoon, however, this was by far thebest I've ever had; light, fluffy, and flavorful. The Mongolian beef was very good, as was the fried rice and stirfry vegetables. The cucumber salad was served with sticky rice (excellent) however we made a little bit of a mistake when we asked for it to be spicy and it fully lived up to expectations! Please pass the water! LOL. Service was pleasant and left us wanting for nothing. Portions were plentiful and prices were super reasonable, which you would expect in a college town. Again, not fancy, but good! Take out is available in addition to the dining room service.

Always great service here. They are quick and prompt. If they have time the owners will come out and talk to you. One of the cleanest Asian restaurants in the DSM area. My go to dishes: Crab rangoons - they use the thick wonton wrappers and good mix of sweet and savory. Always fried to perfection. Crispy paradise rice (nam kuhn) - fried rice balls seasoned with red curry and coconut milk. Served with lettuce and cilantro. You can now order this in a spring roll. :) Pho special with everything - good broth and okay amount of meats. Chicken/shrimp spring rolls - goo amount of meat, vermicelli, and herbs. Ask for the fish sauce for dipping. Fried chicken wings with sticky rice - simple marinated wings and deep fried. Thum mak hung - two versions they have with fish sauce or ba dak (fermented fish).

Everything good I've heard about Fawn's was true. At least for us it was this past Friday at lunch... We arrived around 1130 AM and were greeted as we walked in. The woman who greeted us ended up also being our server and she told us to go ahead and take a seat at any of the four person tables. The restaurant wasn't too full yet so we had several tables to choose from. We stuck to the lunch special menu, but I wanted to try the potstickers because everyone raves about them at Fawn's. The lunch specials come with your choice of an entree from the lunch special list (both Thai and Chinese), rice, an egg roll, and soup. Heather doesn't really do soup so I ended up with two servings of hot and sour. It was very good. Thicker than other restaurants. Great flavor and piping hot. We ordered an app of crab rangoons and the potstickers. We were warned the potstickers were handmade and would likely come out after our entrees were served. No biggie. We appreciated the heads up. The crab rangoons were very good too. A great start to the meal. No complaints at all. For entrees I chose the angry chicken and Heather choose the chicken lo mein. My chicken was angry...I felt my sinuses clear several times while eating our meal. I didn't ask about heat levels...but I'd put it served at about a three out of five...with five being very hot. Everything was perfect. Heather said this was easily in the top two Asian places I've taken her to in the metro. The potstickers... I forgot Heather doesn't do dumplings. I had to eat the whole order myself. They were probably the best potstickers I've had in a long time... Handmade, seared, and served with a typical sauce. Thankfully they were as good as they were...because I had to physically force myself to eat the last couple bites. I was miserably full. The one very minor hiccup we had was not being sure what to do when the meal was over. We were first time customers. A bill wasn't brought to the table and we weren't told if we needed to go to the front or what exactly the process was. We watched a few other diners and decided to step to the front counter. Our bill was waiting right by the register, we paid, and left very satisfied customers. Our meal ran us right around $30 before tip. But that was two lunches and two full appetizers... The lunch specials were $8ish each. We both just stuck with water to drink. I've since been told this is a normal practice at several of the local businesses in this area of Des Moines. I like to tip cash so not seeing the bill before leaving the table seemed unnatural to me. By the time I got my total at the register, paid, and went to put the tip on the table...our table had already been cleared. I just ended up handing the tip directly to our server in passing. It was a great meal. Great service. I'd highly recommend checking them out if you haven't visited there yet.

Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.

Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.

There is limited table service, as many amenities are self-serve. As an Asian, this was great: let me eat in peace :D. Nonetheless, the employees were pleasant and came to check on us to clear our table. We seldom dine at mixed/fusion Thai in California, so expectations were low upon seeing the menu. They have a small menu, but enough varieties for everyone. We ordered Khao poon with tofu, after-school fried rice (what we call pineapple fried rice), and eggrolls (not pictured). The soup was great: enough spiced, fragrance, and heat -- added extra chili flakes for my preference. However, the only disappointment was the tofu, as they were not cooked in the broth, simply added prior to serving. Would have loved them lightly fried for texture and flavor. Then again, it is the Midwest, so I didn't expect many tofu lovers for them to go through the trouble. Still rate it 5/5. The fried rice was delicious: Requested level 3 spiciness, which was too spicy for my uncle, but he managed to enjoy it. He would order it again, but at level 2 spiciness. The portion size is big enough for two more meals, so he was happy about that. We would dine here again next time we visit Des Moines.

The atmosphere was fun and modern without feeling overdone. I was happy to see that the Thai tea could be made with oat milk. We ordered the Pad Thai with chicken, Lao sausage, Dala dumplings, and Nam Khao with sour pork. The Nam Khao at spice level 3 was milder than expected but still enjoyable. The dumplings had a great texture, and while the filling was bland, the dipping sauce made up for it and was delicious and complemented the dish perfectly. The Lao sausage was sweet and garlicky, but the sticky rice was a little dry. The Pad Thai was just how I like it with fresh vegetables and not overly saucy. Parking is hard to find, and it is on a busy street. So plan accordingly. It took us about 15 minutes to find decent parking that was half a block away. We didn't mind the walking, but we thought there would be a designated parking lot. But there is not unfortunately. Overall, we had a good experience and would recommend this spot if you are looking for Lao and Thai flavors.
