Last night we had one of the best Asian meals we've had in a long time. Fawn's has been on my list of places to try for many years but for some reason we had never tried it. We try one new restaurant each month just to keep things fresh, so this time I suggested Fawn's. I'm really glad we did. I had heard so many great things about the food so I was excited to try it. When I saw the menu, though, I was a little nervous because they serve Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian food. In my experience, restaurants that try to serve all kinds of Asian food rarely do one or all of them well. I ordered Pad Thai and my husband got Evil Jungle Prince. I was very pleased. It was the best Pad Thai I've ever eaten. It was SO good! My husband loved his dish, too. It had chicken and vegetables with a spicy sauce made with red curry and coconut milk. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge. We each got two meals out of our dinners. I love it when that happens. The place isn't fancy. It's in a small strip mall and doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside it's very clean and well-kept. There's not much for ambience besides two flat screen TVs. It doesn't matter because it's the food that really stands out. The service was excellent, too. My husband had his iced tea refilled twice without even asking. Great affordable food and good service. What more can you ask for? If you love Asian food, give them a try. I can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes. read more

Because it was 90° outside, I had a hankering for soup. I elected to order some egg rolls and the kaow piek sean. Apparently that translates to chicken noodle soup. The egg rolls are the type your Asian co-worker will bring in once every six months to show the "stupid Americans" that they and their family are better cooks than you are. The type with the fragile wrapper that snaps off easier than furniture bought at IKEA. Strongly recommend. Also, they don't automatically bring it out, but you need to ask for their hot mustard. Ranks up there with Sam's for being the best in town. Anyhow, onto the soup...just in time for the 4th, the soup was an explosion of fireworks in my mouth. The menu warns that soup is served very hot--this is not a lie. The portions are huge and could honestly serve two. The fried and onions and cilantro were perfect accompaniments to the noodles and the chicken which seemed to be rotisserie or roasted style. A word of caution (again, for the "stupid Americans", most of the meat is dark meat. The young man running the dining room was very friendly and consistently checked in. I stopped here with a few coworkers over lunch. We were greeted and seated right away. As a table we ordered crab rangoons and egg rolls. Both were yummy and I would order again. I ordered the Mongolian beef and enjoyed it. It was very saucy which I love. It also comes with a side of white rice. My coworkers order the Pho and both ate all of it. Good service, good, food. I think I found my new favorite Asian restaurant. This place is a hidden gym not too far from downtown. The food is amazing, the best Pad Thai beef I've had to date! It's perfectly cooked with an amazing sauce that elevates it. The service was great, the waitress was nice and attentive. And I thought the prices were reasonable considering. Inside there is some seating, not a lot though. There is also not lots of parking out front. If you are looking for a place to eat with Greta food, run don't walk now! Honestly, not much to look at on the outside, but the simple appearance should not keep you from a great Asian food experience in Des Moines. Soft drink are plentiful, however no alcohol at this location. The advantage of this restaurant is it's open all day long, without a break in the afternoon, for those who are looking for a snack in the middle of the day. Dedicated parking lot makes for easy access. Very simple decor allows their food to shine. I am not typically a big fan of crab ragoon, however, this was by far thebest I've ever had; light, fluffy, and flavorful. The Mongolian beef was very good, as was the fried rice and stirfry vegetables. The cucumber salad was served with sticky rice (excellent) however we made a little bit of a mistake when we asked for it to be spicy and it fully lived up to expectations! Please pass the water! LOL. Service was pleasant and left us wanting for nothing. Portions were plentiful and prices were super reasonable, which you would expect in a college town. Again, not fancy, but good! My wife and I ate at Fawn's and ordered Lettuce wraps, crab rangoon, garlic chicken and Hunan chicken. The lettuce wraps meat tasted burnt and the sauce was nasty. The Hunan chicken was really bad pass on this one but the garlic chicken was good as were the crab rangoon. Maybe it was an off night but for the money better options are available. read more

Each time I order a takeout of Shrimp Fried Rice, the rice is not mixed well. They half mix the white rice and fried rice together in the container. The last visit, I had to ask them to make sure its fried rice and not white rice. Im not sure of their serving methods but, I am disappointed. So I decided to go to Heavenly Asian Restaurant from now on because their dish was made the correct way! read more

We stopped in for dinner the other night and had a the egg rolls, garlic chicken and kung pao chicken. The egg rolls were super hot, fresh and crispy. The stir fry was very fresh and delicious. The waitress was friendly and nice. They were not too busy, but had a steady stream of takeout orders. The seating area is strangely clean and undecorated, almost baron. I felt like I was eating in a meeting room, not a restaurant. We thought they were remodeling but she said they were not. I didn't take pictures because I was starving and the presentation was just not that exciting. I would probably do takeout next time. read more

My go to dishes: Crab rangoons - they use the thick wonton wrappers and good mix of sweet and savory. Always fried to perfection. Crispy paradise rice (nam kuhn) - fried rice balls seasoned with red curry and coconut milk. Served with lettuce and cilantro. You can now order this in a spring roll. :) Pho special with everything - good broth and okay amount of meats. Chicken/shrimp spring rolls - goo amount of meat, vermicelli, and herbs. Ask for the fish sauce for dipping. Fried chicken wings with sticky rice - simple marinated wings and deep fried. Everything good I've heard about Fawn's was true. At least for us it was this past Friday at lunch... We arrived around 1130 AM and were greeted as we walked in. The woman who greeted us ended up also being our server and she told us to go ahead and take a seat at any of the four person tables. The restaurant wasn't too full yet so we had several tables to choose from. We stuck to the lunch special menu, but I wanted to try the potstickers because everyone raves about them at Fawn's. The lunch specials come with your choice of an entree from the lunch special list (both Thai and Chinese), rice, an egg roll, and soup. Heather doesn't really do soup so I ended up with two servings of hot and sour. It was very good. Thicker than other restaurants. Great flavor and piping hot. We ordered an app of crab rangoons and the potstickers. We were warned the potstickers were handmade and would likely come out after our entrees were served. No biggie. We appreciated the heads up. The crab rangoons were very good too. A great start to the meal. No complaints at all. For entrees I chose the angry chicken and Heather choose the chicken lo mein. My chicken was angry...I felt my sinuses clear several times while eating our meal. I didn't ask about heat levels...but I'd put it served at about a three out of five...with five being very hot. Everything was perfect. Heather said this was easily in the top two Asian places I've taken her to in the metro. The potstickers... I forgot Heather doesn't do dumplings. I had to eat the whole order myself. They were probably the best potstickers I've had in a long time... Handmade, seared, and served with a typical sauce. Thankfully they were as good as they were...because I had to physically force myself to eat the last couple bites. I was miserably full. The one very minor hiccup we had was not being sure what to do when the meal was over. We were first time customers. A bill wasn't brought to the table and we weren't told if we needed to go to the front or what exactly the process was. We watched a few other diners and decided to step to the front counter. Our bill was waiting right by the register, we paid, and left very satisfied customers. Our meal ran us right around $30 before tip. But that was two lunches and two full appetizers... The lunch specials were $8ish each. We both just stuck with water to drink. I've since been told this is a normal practice at several of the local businesses in this area of Des Moines. I like to tip cash so not seeing the bill before leaving the table seemed unnatural to me. By the time I got my total at the register, paid, and went to put the tip on the table...our table had already been cleared. I just ended up handing the tip directly to our server in passing. Fawn's Asian Cuisine is a small stand-alone restaurant. We got there right when they opened on Saturday morning at 11 am. We didn't have a reservation, but they were quickly able to seat six of us easily. I started with their crab rangoons. They were really large, freshly made and had a very crisp shell. For my entree, I ordered the combination Lo Mein. The flavor of the sauce was fresh & gingery!  The noodle dish contained large pieces of beef, chicken, and generously-sized prawns. It was a huge portion, and I was able to take half of it home. Great prices, and great food! read more

Had two different visits at Fawns while in Des Moines for work. Food was well made and good quality. I liked that it tasted very fresh and was very low on oil. On my first takeout order I got the Grilled pork and egg roll vermicelli salad.. delicious! I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. I was craving some thai papaya salad. We ordered it and it tasted like kim chi. Plus we ordered it mild but it was way too spicy. We also ordered the lard nar with veggies. This dish was surprisingly large in portion and delicious! Prices were pretty expensive. For two dishes it cost approximately $18 and the papaya dish wasn't that large. They don't have any menus online so I initially called the restaurant and asked if they had any pad woon sen (a type of thai noodle dish I like) but they didnt. The thai noodle dishes they offered were pad thai (which I didnt want) and lard nar. Thank goodness I have had lard nar before from other thai restaurants to know what it was. I'll have to try other restaurants in Des Moines before returning back to this place. read more

Best Asian in Des Moines. Start with egg roll spring rolls. Delicious! A surprise of crunch inside your traditional spring roll. I like the chicken Phó. My husband likes the ox tail. Fresh flavors throughout. We always have mango sticky rice for dessert. It is so good. I appreciate staff telling us the mangos aren't good right now, we have pineapple instead...equally as good. My family and I have been coming here for years! This place is hands down the best place in town for traditional style pot stickers. Quick tip they do take longer than most of the food so order them first thing! This restaurant is small, clean, local and family owned in all the best ways! My favorite dishes are the garlic chicken, vs3 shrimp vermicelli, angry jungle prince, tofu pad Thai and the sesame chicken! The vermicelli is a great fresh meal and will not disappoint! My favorite in town, full of flavor! The staff is so friendly and even though they only seem to have a few people serving at there busiest times they still get through the lunch/din crowd quickly! I've celebrated a birthday here and had around 20 some quests! We had great service and awesome food! They do take reservations and it's B.Y.O.B! They don't deliver but the do carry out! read more

My bf and I went to this place after seeing that Cafe Fuzion (our original destination) was closed for the week and I must say, we were both pleasantly surprised!! It's a medium sized, family vibe kind of place and we got seated right away. The server we had was very nice. Service was very good. We got our food and drinks in good time. About the food. Here's what we ordered: -fried spring rolls (2) -Chicken pho (medium) -Sweet Basil stir fry (combo) -Honeydew bubble tea :) the spring rolls were very good, although I wish it came with the sauce that's usually served with it. However it's still delicious! the chicken pho was also so delicious! whenever I try pho, I taste the broth first before adding anything and it was very tasty without anything added to it (hoisin sauce). I loved it. the sweet basil stir fry was also super tasty!! perfect amount of meat and veggies. this came with jasmine rice, of course. :) the honeydew bubble tea was so good! i suggest trying it. Wow, service with a smile. You know you have found a place that people return to when you look around and 3 different members of the staff are at separate tables talking to guest, who are return guest and almost seem now more like friends! This was my first time here, but they also gave me time to talk with them, and made sure my two year old son was having a good time as well! I tried the veggies and tofu in brown sauce.. Now I loved the meal, the veggies were fresh and the flavor was great! I'm used to a thicker brown sauce but I dug this one as well, but next time I would probably say light on the sauce, but it was great so I can't complain! I also got to try my son meal which was excellent as well, it was a thick noodle dish, with veggies and a dark sauce as well, sweet enough to make my son smile, but not over sweet! The lay out of the place is simple and the price was right too, enjoyed watching the Cubs game while tackling my meal! No alcohol served here but you can BYOB! Good to know! The Chinese food I would say is pretty average. It definitely was not terrible but there are better places for Chinese food. I'm excited to go back and try more of the Thai and Laotian items. Pot stickers are the best in town by a mile! The pot stickers take 15+ minutes but are amazing, they are steamed dumplings then pan fried with a made in house wrapper. Since the pot stickers are steamed first they have a bit of 'soup' inside them. I have tried a few dishes and they all have been good but come here for the... Pot stickers! read more

This was one of the first Asian restaurant I tried in Des Moines and I have seen them change over the years. Their new interior look is very modern and sleek, makes for a comforting eating experience. Their menu and food are pretty much the same as other Vietnamese eateries in the area. 90% of the time I just get some appetizers and the special pho at Vietnamese restaurants. Their food here is good and I would recommend it to others. Their staff is friendly and able to get your order out at a fair speed. Parking is convenient here since they have their own lot. On recommendation of a friend we stopped by Fawn's. The menu was HUGE! Egg rolls were crisp, full of meat & veggies, just the way I like them. What we ordered: Yum beef- the name describes it perfectly! Chicken pho- I didn't try it, my daughter ate the whole bowl! Good size for a small. Noodle salad with shrimp- I'm craving the shrimp still. Chicken Chinese dish with peanuts on top- can't remember the name but it was good. It paired really well with the Yum beef. I haven't been to Fawn's in a long time, so I decided to stop by here to satisfy my pho craving. The last time I was here I scooped in my usual 1.5 scoops of chili oil into my pho, but man did I pay the price! I believe Fawn's has the hottest chili oil in town! So this time around, I was pretty cautious when I used the oil. I tasted it first and it was hot lol. So I just used about a half scoop of chili oil. This oil has a slow burning effect on me :) On to the food...the crab rangoons were very good. Large in size and the filling was good. Not too crabby and not too creamy if that makes any sense. The beef and meatball pho was very tasty as well. The broth had a lot of flavor and there were plenty of beef and meatballs in the bowl. Noodles were also cooked perfectly. My iced coffee came out a little late, but it was ok, since I was chugging water at the time due to my spicy pho! Service was friendly, the establishment was clean, and the food was good.
