A totally random stop while on the way home to Minneapolis. Pulled off at Merle Hay Road to gas up, and made a sweep a few blocks down to see if any choices other than gas station food, or the usual array of fast food options would appear. Lo and behold, we saw Bandit Burrito and pulled in. No idea if it was a chain unknown to us, or a single location, all we knew is that it was new to us, and it was not a plastic sandwich from Kwik Trip! Totally solid and fresh food. A lot of choices for burrito fillings, but due to ignorance and time constraints I just plowed ahead and got plain chicken. There was a chicken mole option not on the menu board, nor offered to me. Girlfriend got the beef, which looked great. A slightly different assortment of toppings than I am used to, and I think I wound up with: wild rice, black beans, chicken, grilled veggies, generic cheese blend, a green salsa of sorts, black olives, cilantro, and minced fresh jalapeno peppers. Not as huge of a portion as some places (fine as we were on the road), and it did not make me think Mexican food in the least. The seasonings were extremely Gringo style (girlfriend thought the beef tasted like grandmas pot roast), but it was a decent and fresh tasting meal. A very welcome choice as opposed to all of the cookie cutter, processed crap nearby. I would go there again if passing through town for sure. I would note, that for roadfood only, I would give it 4 stars, maybe 5, as it was really so much of a better option than all of the chain/fast food establishments I saw near the highway. read more

As others have noted, an assembly-line burrito place, but about as good as it gets. Superior to Panchero's, far better than Chipotle, and infinitely superior to QDoba. My husband, and I, with two of our adult sons ate supper at BB last eve., after months of our son's raving reviews. I ordered a "slim" burrito and as I have health issues, they were very accommodating. They offered so many healthy, fresh options. The staff was great and efficient. We were pleased to know there were a few tables in which to eat outside. The portions are very generous. My only gripe? My wife and I love bandit burrito. A fresh jalapeño cheddar tortilla, Colorado pork, fajita veggies, queso sauce, 3 different salsas, and a ton of extra veggies with fresh jalapeños. All of this is the standard price (I think), either way it's inexpensive! Breakfast burritos are great too for $3 a piece, awesome chili verde sauce. Not a typical chain burrito place, above and beyond. Love the hours too open at 6am, even on Sunday. That's dedication I'll always support. read more

Stopped by on the road. This is a "chipotle" like place. Prices are the same. The food is similar. The only difference would be the flavor of the meats. The staff was very friendly. Refrigerated bottled drinks and soda fountain. Even some dessert items. If you're driving through on interstate 80, this is a quicker stop then the chipotle south on Merle Hay. Good stuff. Great vegan and vegetarian choices for salads and burritos. I love the changing and creative ingredients - sweet potatoes, asparagus, mushrooms, etc. Great salsa choices beyond the ordinary like tomatillo. Bandit knew they needed to be different from Chipotle and Panchero's, and the are. I was instantly hooked when I first ate here. It is a great local take on the Pancheros/Chipotle/Qdoba chain burrito places, but it is definitely different. What sets it apart is the amazing meats. I cannot say enough about the colorado pork. I have tried chicken mole before and it has never been good, but I was told to try it here, and i now have a new appreciation for chicken mole. This was like no other mole i have had, it was just great. The other toppings are homemade and great as well, especially the tomatillo salsa. I want to go everyday for lunch. read more

Great breakfast burritos! Super cheap and very affordable. You can even buy a pre-made one if your in a hurry. They have a variety of things you can place in it like salsa, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, etc. Also don't forget that they have giant homemade rice crispy squares check out. Some things to keep in mind is they are vegan friendly and pretty good about telling you what's in stuff. The staff is friendly and the place is well kept and clean. SERVICE: BAD: When you have someone that is making your order as you go this person so make it a good to great experience...Not here, The gentleman was not friendly at all and seemed to try to rush me through quickly ( I was the only one in line) with no smile he made not attempt to humor me or explain the various ingredients on the menu and all but appeared annoyed when I asked him about the different meats and salsas they had to offer.... :( FOOD: DECENT: I had a burrito and out of the 4/5 different tortilla choices I picked original... I was hungry so I picked white rice, pinto, grilled veggies, beef, corn salsa, lime sour cream, cheddar/monterrey cheese and some guac. Everything tasted good but the rice was a little to al dente for my taste and the grilled bell pepper and onions could use some flavor. The meat, cheese guac and sour cream all did enough to keep it from being completely bland. Overall it was a decent burrito I can say I have had better food off a truck and better service to go with it. I will probably will not be returning anytime soon. Advice: 1. Customer service! take the dark/ med hair length guy off the service bar and make him wear a hairnet. 2. Cook the tortilla or warm it up a little. 3. Delicious! I got the burrito bowl with pork. Plated beautifully and oh so good. Chips and guac were above average too. The employees are really personable. They said they're trying to compete with chipotle--I say they've got them beat. My husband got the burrito and he mentioned the portions seemed larger with the bowl. This is one of my top 5 places I'm going to miss about Des Moines. My husband and I ate at BB about once a month since it opened. Their food is always at peak freshness (the guacamole is AMAZING) and it is a great place for a vegetarian. They make their own vegetarian chorizo that could be its own food group. Don't expect Taco Bell prices...we spend $18 every time the two of us go there, but it is worth every penny. My favorite item there is just a black bean quesadilla with the pepper and onion mix, with sides of the medium salsa, guacamole, and the smoky pepper sour cream. They also have Rice Krispie bars bigger than my fist. The only thing they could improve on is to agree to ship the food to me in DC now :) read more

This is my go to burrito place! I always get the vegetarian chorizo despite the fact that I'm not a vegetarian, it's just that good! I love the wide variety of toppings (think pancheros and chipotle combined)! The staff is always friendly and the price isn't bad. I was very lucky to run into this place, just off I-80 near Des Moines, while driving cross country by myself. I walked in and was greeted by a guy who may have been the owner, or in any event was someone with a real passion for food. Very upbeat, enthusiastic, and highly knowledgeable, he helped me build a great burrito by guiding me through an impressive list of ingredients and making suggestions. I really enjoy coming here. I grew up in so cal, so i know good burritos. I am very hard to impress. Bandit does a great job in fulfilling burrito needs. The service is great. They are always very nice to me. I like the prices. It's cheap fast food that doesn't taste cheap and is made fresh. DO NOT say Chipotle while dining here. I like getting the flour tortilla, with chicken with no beans, add all the veggies available, add sour creme. I am always full without getting that "I regret that meal," feeling. We stopped in here based on a number of positive Yelp reviews but we won't be going back. We each had a burrito that was similar to competing chains in the area, but that isn't the reason for the low rating. We were there between lunch and dinner and they were cleaning up and preparing for their next busy period. One of the workers was consolidating two containers of melted cheese and asked a question of someone that appeared to be a manger. The manager stuck his finger in the container then into his mouth to taste it and gave the worker some advice. The worker then finished stirring it and placed it on the serving line. What had the manager been doing before sticking his finger into the cheese? How long had it been since he'd washed his hands? I shudder to think. I was both surprised and disgusted to see him do this and it makes me question their behind the scenes food handling practices. Violating such a basic food handling principle and showing the younger worker that sampling from the serving line without a spoon or utensil is acceptable means we will never return. read more

I had a flour chicken burrito. It was good & very similar to something you'd get at the other competing chains. I loved the fresh cilantro which made it pop. The 'hot' salsa had a little kick but not crazy which most people could handle. I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back if there was a Chipotle or Qdoba closer, but it was a good burrito. read more

Their mushroom burgers are the greatest. Burger King or McDonalds can't match. I would rather support a hometown gem whenever possible over these Major Chain restaurants. It might be less expensive but they don't have the variety just different versions of the same thing. read more
