Have you ever wanted to grab a short rib taco alongside some pozole and maybe even a churro and then wash it all down with a nice cold brew or old fashioned all while enjoying a stellar playlist while sitting next to a train car? Well if so, do I have the place for you! Bandit Tacos & Coffee is a mashup of a few of my favorite things that I never knew I needed. While the tacos and Mexican inspired dishes and drinks are more focused on via the menu, the coffee shop vibe is the true essence of this space. The vibe is coffee shop that happens to serve tacos and margaritas too. The space is delightfully thought out from the seating to artwork, plants and even the music. We popped in for coffee and went with a classic Nitro Brew with Oat Milk and a Dirty Horchata. The drinks were stellar. I sipped on my cold brew for a while, and my buddy enjoyed his horchata. The horchata is fairly thick, so when he needed a little more coffee so he could get every drop they were happy to top him off at no charge. The tacos and food here are elevated taqueria style with fresh made masa/corn tortillas with the location from and the actual corn on display near the coffee tap. Prices were standard for both the coffee and food. Well worth on either end. Overall, we really enjoyed Bandit Tacos & Coffee. I have a growing list of repeat spots to visit and this spot is high on that list! read more

What a hidden gem (tucked next to Local Motive big yellow train engine/bar)!!! We walked over, placed our order, paid, took our coffee and number & chose a table to await the goodies. We stopped in for a late breakfast comprised of a tall delicious drip coffee, a Bandito Breakfast Burrito, Steak & Eggs Taco and a Bandito Tostada. All tacos & tostadas are in house freshly made corn tortillas and it SHOWS! These were supple & flavorful...now add the well prepared & generous toppings! The heritage pork shoulder rubbed with coffee, cocoa & pasilla was incredibly tender and loaded with flavor complimented with a ribbon of scrambled egg beneath and fresh cilantro atop it all. Absolutely wonderful. The steak & egg taco & Bandito Tostada had similar rub preparations and were also wonderful. We still had room for the delicately fried finger sized churros (8) that were crisp on the bite but had an almost creamy texture within and dusted with sugar & cinnamon. A decadent but necessary order. We comfortably shared a bag for dessert. The decor is brick along with an abstract mural in an open space and LOTS of sunshine. Free WiFi too! I LOVE Bandit! First and foremost, the food is excellent. I've tried all of the vegetarian tacos and they're ALL great. I will say they've been bit spicy, but the flavor is so so good. Last time I went, I had the whitefish tostada and avocado tostada which I loved. The ingredients taste really fresh and the flavor combinations are creative and harmonious. I've never been there just for coffee though I'd expect good things based on the rest of their menu. For dessert I've had churros and the affogato multiple times. The churros are a little doughy but taste great. The affogato, however, is absolutely incredible. Other than the food being the main selling point, the vibes are really cool and comfortable! Went here on a Saturday at 11 am for lunch. Lots of seating available both at communal tables and smaller four seaters. Very nicely done on the inside with a nice flow. I went with my parents and between the three of us we tried the whitefish taco, the beet taco, the oyster mushroom taco, the bandito taco, and the short rib taco. You're not going to find better tacos in Madison. Great vibe and great concept for an all day spot between coffee and scones and then tacos and beer. And perfect for a pre-game bite before the Kohl Center. All of the tacos are great and while it's counter service, the staff is fun, helpful and friendly. There's a huge enclosed section that used to be outside and a lot more variety and options here -- some serious food choices, snacks and drinks. The food is really quite good; great tacos and sweet things that I tried. The cappuccino was pretty good but not great, seems like with the expanded menu the coffee quality suffered a bit. The only visit to Bandit was a while ago for a Yelp event so this was our first time here for a meal on our own dime. You order at the counter. There is a very interesting selection of tacos and other items. Also they have some fun drinks both with and without alcohol. We grabbed an outside table along the seldom used railroad tracks - it was a beautiful evening though a bit breezy so we were chasing napkins all dinner. I ordered the Door County cherry daiquiri which was pricier than a taco but very good. The food came out with only a short wait. This time I tried the short rib tacos and the coffee rubbed pork. Both were very flavorful. I preferred the pork taco a bit more. I also sampled my wife's cauliflower taco which was surprisingly good for cauliflower! We also had some chips and guac. Tasty. Stopped here for lunch with colleagues after reading the reviews and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this very cute and welcoming restaurant. The aesthetics are spot on, dining space bright and airy, and service very welcoming. The menu options are fantastic and I chose the whitefish taco and avocado tostada. Unfortunately I was given the smoked whitefish tostada instead of avocado. But it was not a big deal because what I received was delicious. What I really appreciated was the balance between beautifully looking tacos and the actual flavors. This place has learned how to balance both (something I have not been able to find at more artisanal taco places unfortunately---usually pretty looking but flavors are disappointing). I so wish this place was in Ann Arbor because this place would be part of my eatery rotation. If you're in Madison, this place is a must visit. read more

Bandit is in a stunning space, and just the atmosphere alone would bring me back. Plenty of seating, great music, and lots of natural light. I noticed in their Instagram bio that they're vegan friendly, but when you actually look at the menu, nothing is labeled very well. So it ends up being a game of, "what can I remove to make it vegan?" Which is better than nothing, but when you're paying a good amount for your food it doesn't feel great to be removing ingredients, especially when they advertise as having vegan options. With that said they did offer me some salsa when I removed the aioli from the Patatas Bravas Taco, which was very kind. I also ordered the Vitruvian Farms Oyster Mushroom Taco sans queso fresco and it still had plenty of flavor! The Yerba Juice was also quite refreshing. The vibes are so fun either for a little date night, friend gathering, or even studying. They have good music (usually some sort of edm) that helps me lock in to study with a marg. I went here on Saturday for a Yelp Event, and I found myself back in Madison for something else for another occasion on Wednesday, and my group wound up saying they were bailing on the thing we were supposed to do, did we still want to go get food? This place was so warm and welcoming. I loved it here. Honestly, I will be here more often. The wall when you walk in is super unique, the hanging lights combined very well with the original train station brick flooring, and the tall glass doors/windows open up on nice days to get a breeze flowing. They have A cooler by the ordering counter with glass doors that shows you a bunch of their vibrant, colorful toppings and ingredients. My fiancé and I love trying different salsas so we got the salsa Roja, the habanero salsa and the salsa Verde. My favorites were the salsa Roja and the salsa Verde, the chips were house made too. I got the short rib taco and the Bandito taco, the short rib taco was a little fatty but the Bandido taco was spectacular with the pickled melon. My fiancé got the chicken in the short rib and she like the chicken a little better with the pickled red onion on top. She was also happy to get coffee with her tacos. If you love tacos and coffee you should go here. There was plenty of parking for us and the door wasn't far from the car. My husband and I went to Bandit yesterday to enjoy the beautiful 70 degree weather. We were pleasantly surprised that they had such a beautiful and spacious patio! Since Bandit is located in the train depot, the patio had two trains as decor - super cool how they incorporated the history into their decor! You walk up to a counter to order your food. After you order, they'll give you a number and bring the food out to your table. The workers were friendly and answered all our questions with helpful information. We got our food and drinks very quickly as well. We each got a margarita, shared chips and guac, and had four tacos to share. We got the Bandito, short rib, patatas brava, and the oyster mushroom tacos. All were delicious but our favorite was the patatas brava. The combinations of the smashed fingerling potatoes, aioli, and species was delicious! I've never had potatoes on a taco before but it was so good. I will be ordering that one every time! I love, love, LOVE what they've done with the space - it's airy, colorful, and modern, while still preserving the historical aspects of the building. If you loved Porter, Bandit still offers their wi-fi so you can do work or in our case, we came for Sunday around lunchtime. Order at the counter, then take a number and they'll bring the food to you. The winners: - Cauliflower taco: the kimchi aioli gives it a sweet tang, great combinations of savory/sweet - Smoked whitefish tostada: loved that they kept this from their Porter menu, not too smoky or salty, and love the garnishes on top! - Short rib taco: the right amount of fat, the short rib was so tender - Mushroom taco: this was my partner's favorite, and the feta on top was a nice complement Things we are less likely to order again: - Whitefish taco (tempura): felt a little underseasoned, and looked really tasty visually. - Bandito taco: it was fine, felt like it shined less than the others - Chips/guac: guac also felt underseasoned, and the chips tasted kind of stale/were hard to bite into. Tacos/tostadas run $4-6 a la carte, which indeed feels kind of expensive, but I feel like we were paying for the vibes, the local sourcing, and the flare of each taco. The best café I've been to in Madison so far. This Mexican fusion coffee and taco bar is absolutely beautiful, not to mention the delicious food and drinks. I ordered a dirty horchata and shared chips and guac and churros with a friend. Both tasted so fresh and flavorful. The interior is so calming, and a great study spot!
