Banff Ave Brewing Co is on the south side of town close to the bridge, and it's easy to miss among all the other exciting restaurants and bars on Banff Ave. But I'm so glad we found it on our wanderings on a cold Friday afternoon, as it provided a warm and welcoming environment for us to thaw and socialize indoors. Our server was very friendly albeit a bit frazzled, but the vibes were great all around. One of the best things about Banff Ave Brewing is that all appetizers are half off on Fridays (at least during happy hour)! They also have a nice selection of beers. Their flights are neat in that they offer 6 options instead of the more typical 4, so you can try everything you want to try. We had the nachos, poutine, and several beers. The poutine was a bit salty but the nachos were excellent, definitely get the beer cheese sauce as an add-on. After our walk and picture taking along the Bow Falls Trail....we meandered over to the Banff Ave Brewing. Found the stairs to the 2nd floor and got lucky with the outdoor patio seating! The day was perfect for outdoor dining and people/traffic watching on a Sunday afternoon. The beers were cold and refreshing! The Elk Burgers were juicy, tender and delicious! Highly recommend! I got the chill or be chilled IPA which I really liked but if you aren't a big fan of IPA's I would recommend to get something else. Went there on a Saturday night and the place was busy, but we didn't need to wait for a table for 2. They have a selection core brews and a number of seasonal brews on tap. Tried their stout, which was pleasant enough. For food, we had onion rings for starters, and they were solid. For mains, I got their deep dish Korean BBQ chicken pizza. It's a rectangular pizza with chicken, some Korean sauce and coleslaw on top. The style is similar to Little Caesar's deep dish, which means the edges are crispy which liked. Banff Ave Brewing is, in a word, AWESOME! The bartender was very friendly and helpful with the variety of beers. The food looked good but we were eating elsewhere so all we had was a pretzel. The mustard sauce served with it was delicious and the pretzel was hot and perfectly baked/seasoned. I enjoyed a flight of nicely sized 5 oz pours. Passion Pit - Peach and Passion fruit...what? This beer was crisp and nicely tart. Not all sours are sessionable, but this one definitely is. One more thing about this beer that I loved is that $1 from each 16oz pours is donated to Banff Canmore Community Foundation. After my flight, I ordered a pint to enjoy and to help out the foundation. Specifically Pacific - This is a really nice citrusy pale ale. You can really taste the citrus hops and the bitterness is so faint, non pale ale and IPA drinkers will enjoy it. Black Pil - Schwarzbiers are tasty and are becoming more popular. Black Pil had a smooth taste with a bit of smokiness. The bartender told us it is the most popular beer in the bar and I can definitely see why. Mt Rundle - A super smooth stout, it's served on nitro. Toasty notes along with the bitterness you'd expect from a straight up stout. Shadow Mtn - A nice and toasty black IPA. These are relatively rare, so I love trying them when I find one. Dark chocolate and coffee notes on the front end with a good bitterness as it finishes. The toasted malt gives just a bit of sweetness to the beer. Lodge 1383 - My one IPA of the day, this one is cold hopped and I bet they use some Citra, El Dorado, and maybe something like Sabre or HBC 472. Whatever the hop bill, it's a tasty combination. read more

I wanted a late night snack and Banff Avenue Brewing Company was one of the few restaurants open at about 10 at night. I walked there from my hotel on a mission to find poutine. Pre-tavel research showed that several restaurants in the area actually had it. I believe my waitress' name was Tara. She was very conversational and friendly. She provided amazing service too and knew the menu well. I ordered one of their sours on tap, as that's the only beer I really drink. Mojo Dojo Casa House Sour Ale was exactly as described. A subtle tartness with nice refreshing mint and lime tones. They do have another sour that I sampled that was cherry flavored but I liked the Mojo Dojo better. The poutine was fantastic. Chewy, melted cheese curds and freshly fried potatoes doused with some of the most savory brown gravy I've had in a while. Hands down some of the best poutine ever. Not many places are open after 9pm and this has got to be one of my top go to places in banff after 9pm. They have amazing daily specials and we luckily had the 2 for 1 small plates special and 50% off pizzas! What a great deal. We tried the G.O.A.T pizza which was foccacia crisped up with loads of cheese and caramelized onions on top. It was very good. If the bread was that good the Chicago style pizza is probably better. The charcuterie board was fabulous. So tasty and the selection of local cheeses and meats was very good. 3 types of each with 1 sweet and 1 sour option. We devoured this. One of the many great outdoor spots to enjoy a drink in downtown Banff. Not quite a patio, as it's all bar seating outside, this balcony overlooking the streets of town and out to the mountains will have you in awe. There aren't too many seats outside, but if you get there early or are willing to wait, the view is worth it! The inside is pretty dark and has more of a dive bar feeling, there's a variety of seating options with tables and larger booths. They also have a pool table. We got there shortly after opening on a weekend day in the summer and were the first ones out on the balcony. Service was quick and friendly! As someone who likes sours, heavy beers - I'm talking hazy, double and triple IPAs, and those 8-10% porters and stouts, unfortunately the beers here weren't for me. Of the 6 I tried in my flight I actually only liked the sour enough to finish it. BUT I am extremely particular about my beer and think Canadian style beer just isn't for me. They had a good variety on their menu and I think anyone that likes lighter beers - pilsners and lagers, or traditional IPAs would really like this place! read more

This is a nice brewpub! We stopped here after a day of hiking at Lake Louise and we enjoyed our meal. My wife had a BLT with onion rings and she loved it. I had a chicken sandwich with fries and that was really good as well. We got a flight of their beers and they were just okay; I wouldn't have tried any of them again, but they also had a few nice guest beers, so that was a plus. Pretty iconic spot to grab a drink in Banff. We were able to get a spot out on the patio/deck to be overlooking the Main Street. They have overhead heaters which were a little too warm for me, but I did appreciate them. My boyfriend and I shared a beer flight and it was a great break from all our window shopping. We were able to try a variety of different beers and were happy with the ones we chose. Our waitress was very nice, though it did take her a while to come and greet us and get us menus but it happens! Banff Ave Brewing Co has solidly made, if not great, beers. However, with a good selection of brews, there is a choice to meet everyone's taste. The Lodge 1383 Cold IPA was clean and crisp with just enough bitterness. At only 5.6 percent ABV, it had undertones of sweet pineapple balanced by just the right amount of hops: ultimately quaffable. On the other end of the taste spectrum, the Mt. Rundle Stout is a rich meal in a glass. At 4.4 percent ABV, a few of these nitro carbonated classics could easily sneak up on you. While billed as the brewery's "flagship," the Head Smashed IPA is less than stellar: overwhelming bitterness and unbridled resinous flavors are unbalanced and staccato, leaving sourness on the palette. At 6.2 percent ABV, it's not over proof for an IPA, but its taste leaves one wanting. Downstairs decor is non-descript: tile floors, bar and back bar. Too loud country music. Not a warm and cozy venue in which you'd want to hang out for more than a couple beers. Thirsty in downtown Banff? Banff Ave Brewing Co is good for a pint or two. read more

In a beautiful Swiss looking building from the outside, we wandered in craving a craft beer to round off our night. Stuffed from our dinner, we only had one beer each. I got the nitro Smoothie Operator which was fruity, nitrogen infused and easy to drink. I could drink that alllll year round. It was refreshing but a touchy creamy. Loved this place so much, we came here twice during our 4 day stay in Banff! I had done research prior to our trip and given that I love craft breweries, this one was at the top of my list. It's located right in the heart of downtown Banff by all of the gift shops, dining, etc. Amazing location! The staff is friendly and accommodating. It is not your typical patio, but a bar seating area that overlooks all of Banff Ave. AMAZING opportunity to take in the views and people watch.
