I am writing you due to an experience I had not 15 minutes ago with Dr. Marisa McNeil at the hospital on 865 Jackman St El Cajon, CA 92019. I was discussing with the front desk about my dogs comprehensive exam where the lady at the front desk who told me "We completed his exam," I said "not really because the vaccines were not given and the blood test wasn't ran." She responded "Yes, you're correct so, we didn't complete it." Dr. McNeil from across the waiting area looked at me and said "I did complete it." I ignored her and looked back at the woman at the desk and said "Please let your vet know to not yell at me from across the room." So Dr. McNeil stormed over, and got close to me and smiled and said "Hello" with a big grin on her face. I'm assuming to intimidate me and I asked her "what do you need?" She proceed to argue and raise her voice about how she did complete her exam. The lady behind the desk tried to ask her to stop and tell me "we can still do the vaccines and blood work right way, super quick." Dr. McNiel proceeded to yell out "I'm not doing anything for her because she's rude." while storming off to the back. Mind you she got so close to me that the front desk woman had to touch her should her to make her step back. I am so displeased with this interaction and this doctor. Please do something. I've been coming to this vet a little over 2 years, I called today at 8:30 am about my dog limping and her paw swolllen and they got me in at 9:45, to check her out right away. I was helped by David at the front and he was so sweet, walked me through everything, and set up the 2 week check up since my dog is receiving a anti-inflammatory medication. When I had a question about a certain medication compared to one, I already have my other dog he called the doctor in the back to make sure I didn't spend if not need be. I haven't had a problem with this place, super friendly, and the staff is super friendly with my dogs :) One of the staff even carried her back ! So nice ! 10/10 read more

Just called Banfield El Cajon and said, "I would like to ask you a few questions about your dog insurance." The guy condescendingly replied, "we don't have dog insurance we have wellness plans" I said thank you anyways and hung up the phone. I was planning to call the Santee location next but upon Yelp inspection I see that both locations have terrible ratings and reviews. Very disappointing. I called at 3:15pm 12/17/24. DO NOT GET A SERVICE PLAN!! I have tried and tried to cancel my plan because I don't use all of the services. They are telling me that I then have to pay for services that I used that are covered by the plan. I asked for a refund for services that went unused, but she didn't like that! She was rude and kept yelling at me because I didn't understand. According to her, there wasn't a supervisor for me to talk to. I see a lot of negative reviews for this Banfield location so wanted to share that, having just transferred from another location and going today for my dog's comprehensive exam and annual dental cleaning, I have nothing but positive things to say. Scheduling the appointment was easy and the scheduler was very patient with all of my questions, drop off was smooth, pick up was efficient and I especially appreciated that the tech let me know that she took special care of my very nervous dog because she knew that I was worried about him. When I had a question afterwards the vet called me back after hours and left a detailed message with the answer. I was very apprehensive before the appointment given all of the poor feedback but am very happy to report that I have no hesitation going back. read more

I took my dog in to get her rabbles shot. We were greeted by a very nice associate who asked us several questions about our dog to get a background on it. The associate interacted with our dog and she was very kind to our dog. I was given an estimate for the services. We left our dog in care of them. They called us when our dog was ready to be picked up. Upon arrival we were greeted by associate who went over the services provided and the gave us the diagnoses from pet exam. We agreed to additional services and they were very quick in completing them. After getting the after care instructions we went to pay for services rendered and the cashier who rung us up was helpful and kind. January 7, 2025 I called Banfield Pet Hospital on Jackmon St in El Cajon Ca to ask the price to euthanize, cremate and return the remains of my daughter's 19 year old cat. I was quoted $345 to cover all those things for a 3:30pm appt today, January 8. Called my daughter to verify terns, called hosp back within 10 minutes, spoke with Francisco both times. 2nd conversation he said it was actually $343, due to age and health no exam was required, cat remains to be returned in small box with a paw-print plaque. After the cat was taken to the back they charged $600.46 My daughter, in emotional shock from losing a 19 year member of the family paid it under duress, fearing argument would result in them not returning the remains. Included in the $600.46 were items she was told were part of the process without disclosing they were additional fees and I had been told were not necessary nor required. This is bait and switch. We had an appointment elsewhere for appx $500 and went with Banfield after relaying that to them and being assured their cost would be "no where near that much". People need to be warned about their deceptive possibly illegal but definitely manipulative of people in their time of grief way of doing business. For legal reasons but no other I'll include the words "my opinion" here. To top it off we had to demand an itemized receipt before they finally gave it. I did ask to speak to the manager. She was rude, sounded like she was suppressing a chuckle after she said for us to take the cat home nothing had been done then being told by an employee in the background the procedure had been completed. As if to acknowledge "Ha! Got you by the b*lls!" In an attempt to put this behind us and lessen the emotional trauma this was putting my family through I even offered (as she admitted her employee that quoted $343 "may have had a misunderstanding" of the services I asked about) to meet her somewhere in the middle of the price quoted and the higher price. I can not warn strongly enough against using this business, we have already filed a Better Business Bureau complaint. read more

I've been going to the vet for a few years now. I have my cat on a wellness plan I think its the best plan they have. I play close to $700 for it.. free visits to check in your pet is great but the services they offer on the wellness plan you are only able to use a few times. That being said, they up-charge on anything they can. You'd walk thinking that you are covered with the wellness plan and in most cases you are but then as your checking out without evening seeing the doctor you have $200+ bill on "tests" they needed to run.. oh and if your pet is on a prescription good luck. They will want to keep running tests on your animal, thus you're paying for more tests, the prescription and have to keep bringing your animal back. These tests are not cheap. I had an incident happen recently.. pretty much my final straw with them. I was not able to bring my cat in for more tests as I am busy with work so bringing her in every month can be challenging. I need a refill on her prescription.. I waited 15min at the front no one was there and then a lady came from the back to the front desk had an extremely bad attitude. I don't know if she is dealing with something personally or is highly stressed but it made an everlasting negative impression on me. Usually with customer service you need to put on happy face and make us feel welcomed.. I felt like I was bothering her by simply asking for a refill for my cats meds. She mentioned that I wouldn't be able to see a doctor until the very next week and the doctor there now is a "Fill in" and would not be able to prescribe me the meds for my cat. Hey, I understand I could wait for an appointment but since she was such a B about it I'd rather not even come back and waste my money on a vet that doesn't value their clients. At the end of it I asked what I should do? she said "Take your cat to another vet" Okay lady, I will do that with a smile on my face :) I don't remember her name, I just remember she had a name tattood on her hand (very professional). This location DOES NOT honor their online appointments. I set up this appointment over a week before the day of, received an email confirming. I called their location as I made my way to my appointment. Coming from Chula Vista, I cut out time from my work day to have this appointment, they had me on hold till I exited Johnson in El Cajon. I was transferred to Shawna she specifically stated "We do not honor the online appointments, next time you should call". She was very rude, offered no assistance, stated I can drop my dog off tomorrow and hopefully they'll get to him." I asked her why would I drop off my dog at an unreliable facility for his first appointment. I have questions for the doctor, things to discuss. She said "ok then, bye" and hung up. This review is about the front desk. They are not friendly to customers. I pay a lot for wellness plans and will now be going to another vet after this. Santee location was great but they are only open on Tuesdays now. This location will have you waiting 2 hours for a simple visit and will try to tell you to leave your pet all day. I had to argue with Jessica to let me stay with my Pekingese who has high anxiety at the vet. I cannot just leave him. 2 stars because vets here are not terrible. read more

Probably the Best Banfield in San Diego County. My dog hates the vet, and they totally understand that. The vet was kind, not judgmental and ok with a raw diet. We didn't feel rushed in or out, and this particular Doctor was the best I've encountered in their hospitals. We will make this our new regular vet. Vader is still mad about going, but it being inside PetSmart does make it some what better. read more

I reached out to that person via email and was informed they would look into the matter. Another week has gone by without my situation being resolved! How will they respond to this post? Shame on Banfield in El Cajon on Jackman. In September I took my dog in for his yearly check up and vaccinations. I received an email this week reminding me he was due for a rabies shot. I called to make an appointment for this vaccination and was told I would also have to have him seen for a wellness check. I said I had just been in less than six months ago and was told that's the protocol. The visit was $78.00 and the vaccination was $34.00. I made the appointment and then called Kahoots in La Mesa where they have a vaccination clinic monthly. I'm going there and the rabies vaccination....$19.00. I cancelled my appointment with Banfield. Just another way for them to make money off someone living on social security. read more

I had a wellness plan for my dog but once the year was over decided not to renew it because the cost was too high. Since she is no longer a puppy needing as many shots, I thought I would just pay for an annual exam and whatever shot she needs once a year. I called because I received an email that she needed a Bordetella shot. I was informed that I would have to pay $54.95 just for the doctor to come in the room. I explained that my dog was just seen in October and simply needed the Bordetella shot but the very rude woman told me that they are not a pet hospital that just gives out shots. Ummm... Even though it clearly states on the coupon to bring a printout OR a screen grab, I was advised they require the printout, and I was told "that's just the way it is". DONT take your pet here or fall for their pet insurance it is a scam! After paying for months we take out dog on and they decide he needs an xray which they are charging us $280. What is the point in having insurance. We say no to the xrays and go to another Vet who after an exam tells us that the xrays will not show them anything and it would be a waste that there is nothing that would show up. I decide to cancel with Banfield and they are charging g us $170 because that is the prorated fee inregards to the past visits and our insurance. Scandalous they overcharge you and play off your emotions and love for your pet. I was a 10 year customer of Banfield. The last visit I had was a nightmare... I left my dog's with them, they started a procedure and told me if they couldn't complete a dental cleaning on my dog, I would owe an extra $350 for blood work, and ivy. I requested them to stop altogether, and then they said I would have to pay for the bloodwork which was like $200... I felt like I was being extorted for money. They called me to tell me this while I was at work. I clearly communicated to them how I felt like they violated my trust and that this wasn't a fair business practice... The common response was "we apologize" and this is "standard procedure". So I had them complete the procedure of dental cleaning (that I had been paying for all year long). Luckily it didn't cost ME anything extra. But let me say, when I got my dog back, she was so drugged up and could barely eat for a few days. What are they doing to our pets? I am a little sceptical of the entire Dog dental treatment plan to begin with... I feel like I have been upsold the past few years and they just hosed me with unnecessary expenses... Also about 7 years ago, My same dog had a problem with her cruciate, they recommended me to see a "Professional" who was in a hurry to operate on my dog for about $4K that I didn't have. After some counseling with friends, I got a few other recommendations and found that we could just do physical therapy instead... My dog has been running around now for about 6 years healthy without any need of surgery... If this isn't enough information to tell you NOT to choose Banfield, let me tell you about the poor customer service, and the Run-a-around I have gotten since trying to cancel my plan. They have given me 1-800 Numbers that have been disconnected, I have called other 1-800 numbers choosing the call back feature, never returned a call back, or if I did the phone call was "dropped" about a min. into the call and then they didn't call me back again (i would call again and be put back into call back cue for over an hour)/ was it really dropped or did they just hangup on me? Everytime I spoke with a customer service representative, they assured me they were sorry and it was only "standard procedure". Someone needs to be responsible and I pointing at the Corporate Structure. Needless to say they wouldn't let me cancel my dog's health plan, so I had to change my debit card number. That's it banfield, You're Fired, and I won't tolerate being treated this way. If a potential customer is reading this, save yourself the headache, high prices, and corporate BS and find a nice Mom & Pop Veterinary that you can trust with NO CONTRACTS. Banfield was glad to take our $$ for about 10 years, but when I had problems they didn't want to help me. There is no integrity left in this business, and I regret choosing them for such a long time. Honestly this is the worst pet hospital I've ever encountered. As an emergency for my pet they booked him out a week later. On top of that they just had us drop him off a week ago for his comprehensive exam from 8am to 6:30pm. Now as the emergency visit they want us to drop him off again and not do an in room visit. How dare this business call themselves a pet hospital! We took our sick dog there and they wanted to outsource us to another facility for bloodwork. We were sold a special package at 79.00 a month that would give us free xrays dental and certain privileges. We have not yet been able to get an appt. for anything. Our dog is ill and we can't get him in unless we want to drop him off for an all day wait until doc has time. He is old and nervous and will not tolerate that kind of a wait. Did I mention El Cajon doesn't have a doctor on staff? That's what we were told 2 days ago. Terrible. First they won't refill any prescriptions without making an appointment and paying to see the vet again. When of the five times we've been here for the same issue nothing new has ever been discovered or helped. Now at this very minute, I've been been waiting over half an hour which I would understand, except that the people who went in before us had an appointment 15 minutes after us. Easy fix though, take the appointments in order, done. It was nice that she called though, that definitely goes a long way in my book. I take my two pets to Banfield my dog Bentley and my Sphinx Sally. Dr. Bellmund relived Bentley's itchy skin and truly cared about not only him but finding a medication that would work for our lifestyle. Dr. Santiago treated Sally with such gentle caring compassion and was very thorough with her exam. Overall love every vet and nurse. They are always so attentive to my pets. read more

This is by far the worst place you can take your pet. It deserves a negative 5 stars and half the vets need to lose their license. I took my poor cat there, and they took his blood for tests for his heart. The incompetent, negligent staff didn't even get that right, so we had to bring him back in for another test. They released him to us without checking to see if anything was wrong before giving him back, and he died before we could even get him over to the ER. THEY ARE INCOMPETENT. THEY WILL KILL YOUR PET. Guys- my mama took me here because I was coughing and sneezing, and feeling really sick. I used to like the vet (as a young puppy I haven't been sick a lot so I always get lots of love here) but this time it was awful. The doc looked at me and said I was ok- told my mom to give me honey (yuk!). I didn't need honey, I needed antibiotics because I had a severe case of pneumonia not laryngitis like the doctor said. They didn't even do any tests on me- doctor looked at me for 5 minutes and sent me home to die. Thankfully my mama loves me and took me to a better vet where I now get the care I need. I would not recommend this to any furry friends- they don't care about us so tell your parents to take you somewhere better. This place sucks. They charge us each month for a plan that doesn't cover most of what we need. Every time we go we have to pay a lot more for whatever they are doing. On top of that there was no preventive medicine practiced here. No warnings about anything and then suddenly our dog is very sick. Now that he's very sick of course they are making money off us by constantly prescribing new drugs and saying he needs more tests. Worst of all, his quality of life has diminished so much we have been thinking of putting him down and one of the vets there outright contradicted what the chief of staff had to say and started encouraging my husband to prolong his life more (probably just so they can keep raking in the $$) - I have found it very disheartening and saddening that even the vets can't get their story straight and help us out. We've had a long long time of watching this dog suffer and it's caused great stress in our house and all they want to do is prolong the misery? Stay away! read more

So let me start by saying after going here which is super close I now drive an extra 15 minutes to take my dogs to the vet and go to the Santee location. There is nothing positive I can say. The front staff are polite but are frequently missing as they appear to be understaffed. The vets and vet techs are where I have my major problem. They just glanced at my dog I brought something up about my puppy they didn't even examine it they just said what they thought it was (wasn't that). They also cut my mastiffs nails way too short so now she doesn't like her feet being touched. Four years old and never clipped too short before. They're frequently running late. Just nothing positive to say. Do your dog the favor and drive to Santee. read more

I see all these bad reviews and maybe they have switched management since then because I've never had an issue with them. Dr. Greer and Dr. Santiago have both seen my 3 cats with no issues. Yes, sometimes we wait like 15 minutes after our appointment time to be seen but sometimes things just run behind which is understandable. They've always taken their time with our 3 cats and answered any questions we had. They have never tried to push anything we didn't want them to have. I love this vet and will continue to bring my cats to see them here. read more

First visit to this banfield location. Went in to have my cat looked over for overall health and to be microchipped. I checked it and unfortunately had to wait roughly 25 minutes before being seen. I arrived 10 minutes prior to my appointment time and had to wait longer. Overall the staff was efficient and Dr.Santiago was very kind and answered all my questions. She was able to administer the microchip I brought in. Banfield is a national company they are of course trained to sell/promote their products which in turn usually cost a lot more than normal. I didn't feel pressured into anything, however I was mislead about pricing of a product I had no problem purchasing. At check out my total was about double from what was discussed. That would be my only complaint. Be upfront about the cost and don't talk down to me about clarifying something I'm paying for. Health and wellness of pets should come first.
