You can see the items from the photos but two of us shared two brunch dishes: the Smorrebrods plate and the Tapas plate. It was a lot of food! Really too much for two of us. Loved every item in the Tapas plate, from the prawns to the Brie to the steak. Smorrebrods are new to me and they are interesting but not my thing. The breads in particular are thick and not moist to me. And of course, pair the lunch with the famous Aperol Spritz! They were a little pushy gearing is in their space and seated, and really rushed us through ordering. I asked if this was too much for two people and he quickly said no. I suppose making a larger sale was very important to him. These meals were each about $30 USD. And it took quite some time for the food to come out as well. It has standard bar offerings, standard coffee options and a handful of substantial snack boards such as cheese plates and charcuterie plates. I saw several of these snack boards. They looked excellent. Most of the bars in the neighborhood have excellent selections of both beer and spirits, and first rate coffee. Cafe Gavlen is no exception. I went with Arnbitter, a superior Danish bitters. Danish bitters are like an improved version of Pernod. Darker, suaver, and richer but keeping the challenging licorice flavor that makes a pastis an interesting beverage. Bad pastis tastes like cough syrup. A fine Danish bitters is a long complex dialogue between you and the glass. * * * Many bars in Norrebro are essentially similar. There are tables out on the sidewalk. There is a darker room inside. The inside room gives you a fine view of the passing street scene. In Copenhagen, this means watching nine hundred thousand young adults bicycle from here to there. * * * What sets bars apart are two things. First, Is there a stupid television on inside? At Cafe Gavlen, the answer is no. * * * Second, how is the ambiance of the room? Is the room suavely decorated to make it interesting? Is it a loser's bar that is black and depressing? Is it a party bar that is as cheap as the swill in the kegs? * * * The inside of Cafe Gavlen could be called "Study in Sepia". There is fine antique brown wallpaper with dark green and burgundy flowers. There are ancient photographs. There is a boar's head mounted on the wall. The boar looks stately and porcine. The color of the room matched the flavor in my glass. Rich, brown and deep. There was mellowness in the walls, in the furniture, in the decoration. The room was a warm, dream-filled sleep. * * * This is what bars are for. There are people who go to bars to be social. Plenty of Danes around me were doing just that. The portobello burger was not on the menu but there was no veggie alternative, so they gave my son avocado in lieu of meat for the same price. Regular burger was okay, same as last. My husband went for the moules frites, which was a small portion despite being a main. The mussels were from frost, the sauce very watery, not a lot of flavor. 175 kr. I had the steak frites, ordered medium rare. I got a very thin slice of very overdone meat, a bad cut that was dry and chewy. One grilled tomato on the side, fries and a room temperature bearnaise that was not up to snuff. 235 kr for something you'd get at a truckstop. Again - waste of animal life when prepared so badly. Pixie used to have great burgers, salads and ambience. Now it's terribly overpriced and while the servings look really lovely, the quality has taken a turn for the worse. The location is still great, so a much needed kitchen update would do wonders, but it needs to align with this being a neighborhood hub for people who need a warm, filling meal for a reasonable price. We've occasionally been able to fit 6 or 8 people there for dinner, so it's not a bad place if you need seating for lots of people.

(Also, I would definitely want to feel this way about someone who was going to be helping me cleanse my body using juice.) Anyway, nice simple design with some nice small details. We went there about 10. We ordered breakfast. All together we tried to order every single item from the breakfast (brunch) menu. Basically all items were very tasty and original. I loved the Matcha bowl (Matcha is a special green tea powder and here it was mixed with puréed avocado, banana, cashew milk and vanilla). Really unique. I'm always on the hunt for something unique and I found it in here. Added value in my perspective! So I recommend that you should definitely try that. I would like to mention also the healthy apple cake, which is not really apple cake at all, but it tasted excellent and I'm happy they didn't use too much sweetener.
