I used to come to Bangkok Hung Café back in the early 2000s when I worked at Verizon, and I remember the Thai food being absolutely delicious back then. Fast forward to today--my current company (which I've been with for over 20 years) recently moved to 12 & Northwestern, and I was surprised and excited to see this place was still around, just down the street. I stopped in for lunch, and I have to say, the staff was incredibly friendly and upbeat--really welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to my memories. I ordered the Pad Thai and found it pretty bland and lacking flavor. The portion size was also on the smaller side, and they were a bit stingy with the chicken and noodles. Back when I used to work in Southfield my coworkers and I would often go here for lunch. Can't go wrong with the Pad Thai and the Preaw Warn with chicken is really good too. I drive by this place pretty much every day, so I figured I should stop in and try it out. The first thing I noticed is how crowded the place was. It's not the largest restaurant space, but wasn't the smallest either. So for it to be packed gave me a good feeling about what I was getting into. As I usually do when I try out a new place, I opted for the Pad Thai. It's usually a good choice, and it gives me some sort of basis to compare. So how was the Pad Thai? It was good. I found it tasty and enjoyable and quite filling (definitely enough for more than one sitting). The only thing I would've changed would be my own decision to get carryout instead of dining in. By the time I got to it, the noodles were probably overcooked (from the steam bath in the container), and the dish was warm. I order the Kow Pad with chicken, hot spice. It is basically fried rice, chicken, vegetables, fried egg, and very hot. I love this dish. I have tried many other things on the menu and rate them a 3star. However, this dish is a 4star for me. This place was the best 10 years ago up until 2020. They messed up my ordee. I simply asked for a pad se ew with shrimp and vegetables only. After opening my food it appeared that it was lots of meat in my dish. When calling and letting them know there's extra items in my meal that I didn't ask for. They told me to bring it back. When I did they tried to tell me that the meat I was looking at was egg. Prior to going back to the restaurant a friend tasted the "egg" and said it was meat. This place has some of the best Pad Thai I have ever had in the Metro Detroit area. Every other place I try in the Southfield area or back by where I live in Fraser, I am always left slightly disappointed that it's just not as good as at Bangkok Hung Cafe. The chef's hand in regards to seasoning is a little light so if you like Medium I would suggest Medium Plus instead. I've also had their Crab Rangoon and their Chicken Satay appetizers. The Chicken Satay are pretty massive, but I was not a fan of their peanut dipping sauce as it was a bit bitter. The Crab Rangoon are pretty good though. Just as a quick side note, the filling is a little on the sweet side and it threw me off at first when I ate one. Try one on its own before dipping it in the sauce they provide. THE END read more

The most popular Thai restaurant on our office's lunch rotation - located in a sad strip mall on Northwestern (although the Beans and Cornbread on the corner is not so sad). This place is always crowded at lunchtime, and the waitresses/kitchen do a good job of getting you in and out. The food is good, vegetables are of high quality, and the "mild, medium, hot, etc." seem pretty true to order. 3 things to note: 1. When you dine in, your meal comes with soup. 2. When you walk in, you're not really sure if you should just grab a table or wait to be seated. I've always waited, but not more than a few seconds. Don't be scared. 3. Be careful if you get seated near the back. Sometimes there is some shmo buying free lunch for a booth or two while he blah blah blahs from the aisle trying to sell them on some stupid pyramid scheme or something. :) read more

This is my first time at this restaurant. I have eaten Thai food all over, some good, some great, and some awful. Just came in for lunch and to my surprise, I had maybe the best Pad Thai I have had. Ordered it with chicken and shrimp. The chicken was moist and soft and the shrimp was cooked perfect. The sauce was as good as it gets. The service was very very quick and served with a smile. The place is a hole in the wall kind of place and I like hole in the wall places if they are good. I met a friend here for lunch a few weeks ago at around 11:45 AM since the original Thai place we chose was packed. However, I got to Bangkok Hung in time to snag us a booth before she arrived. By Noon though, people were waiting for seats. So, come here early if you want to find a seat!! The service was decent, but I have had better Thai at other places. I really like Thai Curry dishes so I asked the waitress what type of vegetables they put in the Veggie Curry. She just said "the usual kinds." Uhh, thanks so much for clarifying-RIDICULOUS!! Anyhow, I went with the Vegetable Curry with Tofu medium spice and my friend ordered her usual Pad Thai medium spice also. My curry arrived with a few pieces of tofu, some mushrooms and carrots, and about a pound of sliced ginger. It was soooo overpowering and wayyy too spicy for a medium. Needless to say I only ate the rice and some sauce and my friend took most of her meal to go. Such a let down!! read more

This place is always wonderful. The flavors in the food are very consistent. The spiciness to the food are on par with what you'd expect-- not over the top in spice. They will however bring you extra chili oil or paste if you want to add more spice. The veggies are always fresh, and the drinks keep on coming. I always love their pad thai and pad thai with curry. Today I experienced a lunch that was terrible. First, we arrived with a party of five and was told by the waitress curtly, we cannot put tables together. If you wish to sit with your party you will have to sit on the end of the table. I wish her attitude was the low point. However, the egg drop soup arrived. It had a clear broth, with pieces of cabbage and old pieces of washed out gray colored eggs in the soup. There was no taste to the soup and the eggs were like tofu. Then the main course... Pad Thai Chicken in most restaurants, but here called Pud Thai. The sauce was diluted and had no taste. The chicken was greasy and tasted old, and the bean sprouts, were fresh, but the dish had so many bean sprouts you couldn't see the noodles. It appears that the portions were reduced from the week before, the food bland and tasteless and the chicken was greasy. Something was wrong with the meal, I took several bites and then asked for a box. A coworker ordered the same dish, took it back to the office and reheated it. He then instructed me not to eat mine as he got sick. I felt a little Ill after the few bites I had and understood the necessity of throwing out the food. Will not go back. A Thai Restaurant that cannot produce Pad Thai is like a bar that cannot get a hamburger correct and there is little point. read more

I have been here many times - I guess I just neglected to write a review. I get either the Pad See Ewe or Pad Thai (here called Pud Thai). I had the soup when I wasn't vegan - all lunch entrees come with either egg drop or hot and sour. The spring rolls are good as well. It seems super clean, is usually busy, and is for sure efficient. Get there on time, or prepare to wait a moment. I like that the heat levels are usually consistent - so medium there always tastes the same. At some places the heat depends on who is making it. So why not 5 stars - it seems like the have recently reduced the portion sizes. Also, they only have canned pop so if you have a hot meal you can quickly need a second can. Good for lunch. read more

The service was decent but I didn't enjoy the food as much as I have at other Thai places. I ordered my go-to favorite dish, Pad Se'ew, and felt the sauce lacked the flavors I really enjoy. Also I didn't like the smaller thicker noodles they used. My lunch date ordered a dish that had so much ginger it was overpowering for him. I'm not saying this is a bad restaurant, it just wasn't for me. The veggies seemed fresh and the menu was large. We eat at BHC 2-3 times per week. This is hands down the best Thai food I've found in Detroit.

There are a lot of Thai food options in the Detroit area, so my recommendation is to avoid this place. I went here for lunch with some co-workers based on a co-worker's recommendation and it was pretty much a disaster. I ordered the Pad Prik Khing with chicken and mild plus spice. The beans, rice, and chicken were of good quality, but the spice level was not mild plus. It was more like a spice level of burn your mouth and throat so that you have trouble talking later. The food also had a bizarre smoky flavor to it, but not smoky in a good way, smoky as in smoke from cigarettes. After we walked in and were seated, greeted, and our orders were taken, the waitress went and put a sign on the door and locked the door. There was only one waitress and one cook working and both of them were stressed out and in a hurry to get everyone out of the restaurant because apparently there was an emergency in the family, which is what the sign on the door said when we walked out: "Sorry, we have to close for the day due to a family emergency." There were three gentleman who came into the restaurant right after us, which was right before they decided to close early, and the cook had to come out and explain the situation to them. It was super awkward for everyone to watch. The waitress was attempting to take care of the few tables she had and also to lock the door behind customers when they walked out of the restaurant. She wasn't quick on the draw at one point because a young man came into the restaurant and sat at a table. The waitress immediately locked the door and ran to the back to yell at the cook about this. We paid for our food and got out of there. As we drove away we saw a group of about five gentleman walk up to the door, attempt to open the door, read the sign, scratch their heads, and walk back to their cars. I understand the importance of taking care of the family, but it was just an odd situation and the food and service were sub-par and the place was not clean. read more

I have been going to Bangkok Hong Cafe the first week it opened in the 90s. My favorite foods are Thai food I know every dish that every different Thai restaurant and what to order. Their curry sauce is the best that I've ever had. They're brown sauces are amazing out of this world. Friendly owners aim to please. Just like any restaurant sometimes dishes have an off day but 9 times out of 10 outstanding. .Could use a remodel. I have tried, on three separate occasions now, to call to place a carry-out order and the line just rings, and rings, and rings. I have called during lunch and dinner and it's the same each time. The place is open for business. Either their info is out-of-date online OR they dont care at all to deal with customers. This is one of my favorite thai places but I will NOT go in to order and wait there. I am busy. Therefore, I'll most likely never eat their again as they dont care to provide any customer service. Bangkok Hung (that's what she said) had a delicious lunch menu. I sampled the pad thai, because I have no sense of adventure, and was thoroughly pleased. Unlike Pei Wei, there was no tofu on this plate. There was however, no shortage of chicken, curry and nuts. The portions were huge, the service was fast. I can't really complain. A good place to eat if you are looking to get away from the cubicle at lunch. I will surely be back in the near future for another heaping portion of food likely to induce an afternoon coma - maybe as soon as tomorrow. read more
