I've had an excellent experience working with BHS. I had never owned a dog before, and decided to sign up to foster at BHS just to see if I liked it. They gave me everything I needed to take care of my dog (crate, blanket, toys, leash, food, etc.), and are excellent at providing her shots, medical care, everything. Gabby at the foster program has been diligent about keeping me up to date on my dog's needs and has been so patient with all my anxieties, like when I cut her nails too short!! They are always available to provide help and support, their facilities are clean and nice, and everyone I met has been so knowledgable and helpful. These are hardworking people trying their best and I would definitely recommend their foster program to people hesitant about being pet owners or who want to give back in some way. read more

Love to visit their cats wish we could bring them all home but visiting them is great too!

No training certificates or diplomas on walls yet they expect you to take their word on experience. Interior smells like a pool or outhouse depending on the day. Dogs brought outside into dirty enclosure with feces everywhere twice a day. No spot to cool down on hot days when outside. Dogs brought out with leashes tied around neck and choke when overly stimulated. Not a good place. Staff lie about encounters. read more

First off, this place is horrible. I walked in to look at an adorable cat, the staff is bad and do not take care of the cats. I watched one of them roughly handle a kitten because it didn't want the medication they needed. I was there about 45 minutes before they close. I stood at the counter waiting for 15 minutes before anyone helped me. When they did help me, I asked to see one of the cats that I really liked. They told me I could not because it was passed their visiting hours (5:30) They just let a family see a cat. not long before me. I was really upset because I take less than 5 minutes when seeing a cat, it was during there last day of the deal they had so I would better be able to afford the cat, and because a family had not even gone through meeting a cat. Maybe if they wouldn't have had me waiting for 15 minutes a cat would have had a nice home to go to that night. I will never go there again. They also have no training certificates or diplomas but yet they "have experience". Please do not give your hard-earned money to this horrible place. I drove to Waterville where they do take amazing care of cats and have them in walk-in rooms to meet with before even talking to anyone about anything. They take great care of their animals. DO NOT GO TO BANGOR HUMANE SOCIETY!!!!!! Over-priced and not good!!!!!! read more

We are adopted the best little cat in the whole wide world! The staff are very good they seem to genuinely care about their little furry friends. I would highly recommend a shelter cat from the Bangor Humane Society for anybody looking for a new friend. read more

I adopted 2 female cats from the Bangor Humane Society in September. One of the cats had issues as she was afraid of her own shadow and stayed under my bed for 3 weeks! However, I am pleased to say she is now part of the family and loves her new sisters. The second cat I adopted came in and gave her stamp of approval and settled right in from the start. The staff was great and very helpful. I urge anyone who wants a pet to consider a rescue animal. They are so thankful to get a forever home and make great pets. read more

No referral from me! If you arrange a surrender over the phone be sure to get the name of the individual you speak with. If you wish to adopt you get all kinds of good vibes. If you wish to surrender you can be told anything but they may not follow through. I just drove 100 miles to surrender a stray mom with 3 kittens based on BHS's commitment to take them from an earlier phone call. When I arrived their response was "Sorry, no space." Who does business like this? Additionally my explanation of having called a total of 3 times same day with their answering program clicking off instead of taking my message was questioned, as though I were lying about it. Don't believe them when they say "Yes." They'll take your money, though. If surrendering you may need to call every 15 minutes to be re-assured you haven't been bumped down in line. I stopped by hoping to visit with some cats and see which one would pick me instead of me picking a cat. Unfortunately you're unable to pet a cat unless you're ready to commit to adoption. I was told if I wanted to volunteer, I could pet. The staff person very quickly wrote me off. The employee assured me they receive enough affection by the staff. No need to go unless you are ready to adopt. If you are looking to spend time getting to know a cat, you may be disappointed. I'm grateful many animals receive care here, and are not killed, but many seemed rather depressed, sick, and starved for affection. My heart goes out to those poor creatures. read more

Just a little info for the audience, not bad service and hospitality, but they don't answer the phones. Tried calling multiple times, different days, still no answer. The reason for calling was because we just adopted a cat and they told us to call if we noticed anything wrong (he got neutered the day before). The cat is sick... and we can't get ahold of them, we just needed some advice.. again, nothing bad about the place or the people, just make the phones more of a priority. read more

i went there to get a cat , when got there two customers where arguing with the staff about adopting a pet , so i ask how it works to get a cat and they told me i had to pay a fee ( way over priced , RIP OFF) and i had bring my whole family and friends ( who ever comes to my house to visit ) to come visit the cat and see if the cat except them before i could adopt , i was so mad i was arguing with the staff like the rest of the customers where . like i told them i will get one off craigslist for free and you guys keep the one you have ! We Found Malnourished 6 baby kittens in a vacant house, which we were picking ticks off of, We took them to Bangor humane society to drop off and try to get help for. After leaving a message that didn't get returned tell hours later. They refused the kittens. Claiming that they did not have a contract with Orrington. So during my busy work day, I had to drive back to Orrington. And contact animal control. Because they put politics and their crazy Policies before the care of the animals they claim to care about. read more
