I just stumbled upon this cart for lunch because it was close to the hotel I was staying at, and thank goodness I did, because it was so damn good. Banh mi's are one of my favorite foods of all time, and I've had them all across the country at various Vietnamese outposts. This one is on par with the best: the bread is perfectly crisp on the outside while staying soft on the inside, the cold cuts were delicious and generously portioned, the seasonings were great, the pickled vegetables, everything... it's just the perfect banh mi. The vegetables were refreshing. The meat was meh-basic sliced meat. The spicy sauce wasn't very spicy but the jalapeños added a little kick. I love that there's finally another good place for banh mi sandwiches other than Banh Mi Saigon in Chinatown. I've been here multiple times and it's located right by the Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts on Water Street in South Street Seaport. They usually sell out of the Special Baguette but I think the Grilled Pork Baguette is better. There's nothing special about the sliced pork and the grilled pork also comes with pate. What more could you ask for? You can definitely get your lunch within 10 mins. and it'll still be warm by the time you get back to the office. Having this cart so close to me at my job makes the extra 2 dollars above the average price for a Banh Mi sandwich worth it. The wait can be long but it is better then going half a mile to Chinatown. The ingredients are a nice balance of hot, sweet, fresh, crunchy and yummy. For $9 you get a sandwich and soap combo. Yea, it is not the cheapest but sometimes it is worth it. The menu is pretty simple. They originally started out serving just Banh Mi's, but they now also serve a few rice dishes too. Since it was my first time ordering from the cart, I bought the newbie item --- the #1 Special Baguette with Sliced Pork and Vegetables. I didn't have any expectations, but it was surprisingly DELICIOUS! The baguette was crispy, as all baguettes should be, but the sliced pork was VERY VERY flavorful and there was a nice mix of the other typical Banh Mi ingredients (sliced carrots, cilantro, cucumber). In addition, there was a sauce mixed with the sliced pork and vegetables that added even more flavor! The Banh Mi was also pretty big. Since this Banh Mi wasn't from the typical Banh Mi shop, I expected it to be small, but NOPE! Definitely filling! And best of all, it was for $6 only, which is sadly a steal in the FiDi. The banh mi is good. I can't really find any place that sells banh mi and this is the closest place that is convenient for me during my lunch break. If you look at the photos on the app, it is possible that you might think that there's too little filling. It's actually enough and filling. Also, as a tip, tell them to cut your sandwich in half. Great food cart in lower Manhattan by the financial district. The Vietnamese food is very good. The chicken noodle soup might seem pricey at $9 but it's really loaded with big pieces of delicious chicken, tons of those thin rice noodles and a quart of hot broth that you add to your bowl as you see fit. It's very filling. On my second trip there I tried the lemongrass pork chop on a bed of white rice and some veggies. Very tasty and again a nice, filling portion. I guess their "specialty" would be the sandwiches but I try to stay clear if bread so.... Worth the trip and the wait for the food which was pretty quick anyway. read more

Very solid. Note that after the Bahn Mi Cart finishes serving lunch in the financial district it heads to St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue for the rest of the day. I don't know if it will be a staple at St. Marks and Second Avenue as they are testing the cart there at which the guy stated it's not doing as great as when it's downtown. I'm assuming catering to hungry businessmen during the lunch hr calls for better business but anyway, this review is for the St. Mark's location although everything is the same. The cart was about to close when my bf starting to inquire if they would serve us food. Sure enough the man whipped up the special bahn mi (spicy of course) that contains 3 types of pork. Another guy informed us that everything would be thrown away as they cannot use leftovers for the next day and asked us if we wanted some summer rolls since he had a few left. Normally they are $4 for 2 but we were able to get them for $2. Telling him it was my bf's bday (not a lie) might of helped as well. The bahn mi $6 was nice and toasted with a generous amount of pork. The carrots and cucumbers were crunchy and it made for a very fulfilling snack. It's a tad smaller than the bahn mi at Nicky's Viet but I think it's much tastier. The summer rolls were good, nothing outstanding about them. I was thrilled to find a Banh Mi Cart in the south side of FiDi. Having frequented Baoguette earlier in my career, I was looking for a similar, not american, sandwich option. The set up is tiny - its a small silver cart with barely enough room for the two people inside. At 12:45 pm, the ordering line was short but the waiting for food line was about 10 minutes. Being that they write orders down, but have no way to match the order to the person, if you feel like you're waiting too long, its best to remind them what you asked for to make sure its on its way. I ordered the #1 special baguette with sliced pork and asked for it to be spicy. It was $6. Its the most common order. I loved the bread, which was fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The meat, like most reviewers mention, is a bit on the thin side. The veggies and cilantro are crisp and tasty. And the smear of sriraha brings the whole thing together. The sandwich is a foot long, but since its not as densely packed, it probably has fewer calories. It was enough for me. The cart also carries summer rolls and vietnamese coffee. Unfortch for me, they no longer carry bubble tea. For the $6 price tag, I think this is a really good lunch option. I think the bread is better than other locations and the portion is perfect for me. It also saves me from walking a lot further to say, Baoguette, so I'm willing to shave off some meat for instant gratification. It also beats dropping $9 at Flavors and won't give you food coma. Baoguette and An Choi might charge 7-8 bucks per sammich but at least they had substantial MEATS in it! IF you look at the pictures--you see like BITS of meat scattered here and there and a thin film of the "do" (pronounced like 'yaw') which is a vietnamese bologna kind of processed pork meat thing). There's a stick of pickled carrots here and there, stuffed with cilantro (which is normally just a GARNISH) and forgetable smattering of soy sauce/pate if or whatever semblance of it. Other than that for some reason they seemed a bit disorganized and SUPER SLOW and arbitrarily serving up orders in no discernible chronology, the taste of it was "good enough" compared to a lot of other sammich shops. Had the #1 (special combo-: no trace of head cheese, the pink/white pork belly looking thing--i never know the english translation for these things! pickled daikon/carrots, cucumbers, pate, soy sauce blahblah all hadt he right taste/elements). HOWEVER--as u can see in the pictures i posted and on my foodblog: http://foodactually.blogspot.com/2009/05/banh-mi-truck.html everything was SPARSE. My friends had the Eel sandwhich and grilled chicken--"good" enough in that u can't really f*ck this up. The eel was the packaged frozen kind u can get at JasMart--the chicken had enough coloring and taste to it. I've used the frozen eel and you can fit a LOT more in those sandwiches than what seems to be half of a filet that was already cut down from how it came. Tuna was straight up canned Bumble Bee--not that I don't like my canned tuna made salads etc but I'm not even sure what they'd add to the canned tuna since the whole composition of the sandwiches are distinctively HAPHAZARD and LAZILY put together. There's just no love in the sammiches! All the seeds of a wholly good banh mi is there--if it wasn't for their stingy and seemingly purposely indifferent attitude to the product they serve. Nothing more embodies this than their bubble tea as well--the boba/tapioca was like if you had little balls of some kidn of bean paste that's hardened and dessicated in the back of your fridge for a good few weeks then quick thawed/blanched to get a thin extra flimsily gooey film over the balls. Again--just goes to show how haphazard, careless, passively indignant experience the whole truck gives you. read more

Pretty cheap, cash only banh mi sandwiches down in fidi. It's literally across the street from my office, so I can get food from there in 5 minutes, which, somedays, is what I need. I wasn't a fan of the sliced pork sandwich, but the ground pork is like salty spicy sweet and goes amazingly with the sauce and veggies. The bread is always decently fresh and the wait time is quick. Anyway the Banh Mi cart is in front of Starbucks and you will recognize the cart immediately when you see an Asian lady sticking her head out of the cart screaming "What would you like? #1? Spicy or no Spicy?" yup that would be the cart. You have very limited options, and I usually go for the #1 spicy cause I like the pate. The sandwich cost $6 which is not bad compare to all the other food in the area. The wait to get your food is probably what gets to most people, on a busy day, you can expect to wait around 10-15 minutes and on top of that, sometimes the lady might mess up the order and give your order to someone else which means another 5 minutes wait on top. BUT if the wait didn't stop you, you'll be rewarded handsomely with: This ¾ foot long sandwich with various types of cold cut in it (I dare not question what kind of meat it is jkjk) but it is super tasty!! You get so many flavors with the meat, fish sauce and mayo all inside a warm, soft crusted bread! Yeah, there's not too much meat but I think it is just enough to make for a satisfying sandwich. I was dying to go back to Hanco's in Brooklyn for the most delicious bahn mi (and overall best sandwich I've EVER had) but even though I'm on Wall St, an hour simply isn't enough time to go, enjoy and come back. I looked here for something closer and saw there was a cart a few blocks away. I find that street food in general is more authentic and better so I decided to go there. As I walked down Pearl almost at Hanover I got a bit nervous cause I didn't see a food truck in the street like I expected. When I go to the corner across from Hanover Square I saw this tiny, nondescript silver cart with a handwritten "Bahn Mi Cart" sign in the the window. I was thrilled. I walked right up and ordered a number 4, the Grilled Pork Bahn Mi, spicy. Less than a minute later I was on my way back to the office before it got cold so I could dig in. The baguette is nice and perfectly crusty, about a foot long and slightly toasted. I was expecting slices of grilled pork but instead it was ground pork shaped into a long tube-like shape to fit the bun. Don't be alarmed at the pink hue of it! It is cooked, it's just the spices they use and great spices they are. The meat was a good amount for the baguette, very moist and tasty. The pickled veggies (cukes, daikon and carrots) and cilantro were a bright and refreshing pop to the spiciness from the added jalapenos, ribs and seeds included. I didn't need that small side of my beloved sriracha I asked for on the side just in case. The nice girl at the cart handed me their card with a number where you can order ahead and get deliveries. I was really happy to find this place so close to work when I need a fix and for $6 it beats anything else in this area for a decent sized, fresh and authentic meal.
