Finally got to Banjo's after hearing rave reviews of the Chicken Fried Steak bowl from some folks at the 190th nearby. Arrived around 9:30 on a Saturday morning. I like that we can pick our own table. Service was awesome. You don't get a carafe of coffee, just cups with refills. I ordered my breakfast test of any new place - simple scrambled eggs, sausage patty, hashbrowns, and pancakes. Hubby ordered the famous chicken fried steak bowl. His order came out piping hot and tasty. Both of my plates were just barely warm - like they had been siting there waiting. The sausage was thin and dried out. The pancakes were the same...so crusty on the bottom that it was hard to cut with the edge of a fork. Very thin without hardly any "breadiness" between top and bottom. Hashbrowns were awesome! Even though I left more than 50% of my food on the plate, the server did not ask if something was wrong. We'll be back...and I hope to find something that will be delivered hot to the table this time. read more

This is a great place to go for a diner breakfast! It's always super busy and there is no dang parking. The last time we went, the service wasn't the best, but they were also packed to the gills so that's not surprising. I'm from out of town,Probably wouldn't go back again if I ever came back to visit..The service is exceptionally slow; which seems to be just our wait staff( another waitress was very attentive to her table) not sure if it's due to being a weekend or not.. The place is a "seat yourself" type of deal which I feel is part of the reason we waited fifteen minutes before we received menus, and then we're asked at the same moment she gave us the menu's if we were ready to order... I'm no, no I'm not ready to order I haven't even opened the menu yet, the waitress couldn't remember our drinks let alone to give us straws 1/5 stars there.. The food was ok actually 3/5 stars, warm but not fresh hot feeling; the chicken strip were not actually strip but thin peice of flat chicken lightly breaded which I personally like so it's ok but if you are wanting actual chicken strip with the classic juicy white meat chicken, then I'd suggest ordering something else. There were Flies around which bugged me and no fly swatter available.. The others In my party had juicy steaming hot chicken fried chicken, a kinda warm meatloaf meal and a cold fries with gritty phillycheese steak she commented as tasting "old". Overall the service can be greatly improved, the food is a hit or a miss.. The environment is what saves the place, it has a cute down earth dinner type of feel, really family like. 4:5 stars there.. I opted for fruit side instead of more starch (pancakes, hash browns). Group had corn beef hash, half order of biscuits & gravy, and a standard sausage & eggs w/ hash browns. As other posts stated, serving size was generous. I rated this higher than a DDD place near Aurora! Waitress attentive - almost too frequently asking if we needed anything before the food arrived (3 times??) Would suggest someone plane the women's restroom door - difficult to close. read more

Banjo's is a fantastic asset to South Topeka! I always choose the chicken fried steak meal whenever I go, but my husband has sampled more of the menu, including the all-you-can-eat tacos. The restaurant is very clean and the staff very friendly. It can get a little crowded around lunchtime on weekdays and it's busy pretty much all day Saturday morning. But it is a must-stop if you are south of town and want some wonderful home cooking. We will definitely be back! read more

This place is no different then your typical highway diner. Don't expect anything unique or original.

I and my wife came in a few days ago for the first time. We seated ourselves and a waitress walked by several times, telling us she would be with us in a moment. We watched what she was doing, and turns out she was cleaning off a table. (the cafe was nearly empty so this was not a priority for seating) When she finally decided she could come take our orders, she asked what we wanted to drink. We told her our drink order and my wife said she was ready to order, and the waitress replied; " all I want is your drink order," and she walked away. After she brought the drinks, she was then ready to take our orders. We both ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Dinner with mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll. When the food came to the table, it looked great, except the roll which looked like a flat square about 1/2 inch high. With the first bite of the Chicken Fry, we noticed something was dreadfully wrong. All we could taste was fish. I took a bite of my "mashed potatoes" and quickly discovered that they were very dry and not very mashed at all. When the waitress came back to the table, my wife asked her if they had fish on the menu, and she replied "yes, several kinds." I then asked if their fish was fried, and she said some of it was fried. My wife then asked if they fried the Chicken Fries in the same oil that they fry the fish in, and she replied; " everything that we fry here, is fried in the same oil... So, if you like the taste of fish, and you like hard powdery dry "mashed" potatoes, and a dinner roll that could pass as a communion wafer, you will be right at home here, however, if you are not in the mood for fish, or you just don't like fish, Better skip this dive.
