Whether at our home base in the Halifax area or abroad, my wife and I enjoy relaxing over a coffee, adult beverage or tasty food, and it was in Bannerman that we were hoping to find all three. We swung by in the early afternoon, just after the lunch crowd at most places would be easing off, but Bannerman was impressively going strong from when we arrived through to our departure! We were seated at one of their picnic-esque tables near the back of the room, taking in the high ceilings and the lovely work done to reuse this historic fire hall. I snagged a half pint of one of their light and refreshing lagers, while my wife partook in their caffeinated offerings. It's nice to be able to get both, and the warm, communal feeling of the space was a nice contrast to the cold and clinical vibe that can sometimes come with Third Wave places. Wanting to refuel after a dizzying hike on the North Head Trail, we ordered the mushroom flatbread, steamed buns, and pierogis. My wife's mushroom flatbread arrived first, with the not-pizza leaning heavily into savoury, earthy flavours with sauteed, locally harvested mushrooms, shaved truffles, and smoked gouda. While I fundamentally disagree with arugula being on pizzas and their brethren, its peppery bite helped cut through the otherwise rich flatbread. While I certainly shared my two apps, I was glad to have them mostly to myself! The food in general isn't inexpensive at Bannerman and $17 for two steamed buns was a bit of a pill to swallow, but the quality was thankfully there to back its price tag. Succulent, shredded pork was jam-packed into the pleasantly-chewy, folded buns, and topped with the contrasting tastes and textures of slices of white onion, crispy onions, and micro greens. The pierogi of the day had a lentil filling, and the savoury legumes lent themselves well to these deep-fried dumplings. The ultra-crispy exterior easily gave way to the doughy interior and the lentils within. Almost stealing the show was the onion confit sour cream, whose velvety smooth airiness had the perfect amount of caramelized onion flavour. Bannerman could/should sell this stuff on its own! Even after just one visit, it's easy to see how Bannerman's combination of craft beer,top-notch coffee, creative bites, and a beautiful space in an award-winning adaptive reuse has made for a place that's more than the sum of its parts, and has become a destination for locals and tourists alike. read more

We were pleasantly surprised by this brewery. We came here to kill time and have a beer, then after viewing the menu, we decided to stay for the food. I got the Minor Detail Hibiscus Blonde Ale and it was very refreshing! I'm not usually a "light beer" drinker, but this beer had the most color and it did not disappoint! Hubby had the Paradise Lost Rice Lager and thoroughly enjoyed it. Their food menu is comprised of creative Thai dishes. We shared the Surprised Pig - ground pork / fresh herbs /red onion / jasmine rice, and the Atlantic Cod Larb - fresh herbs/ toasted rice powder/ jasmine rice. Both dishes are very similar in presentation but different in taste. The Surorised Pig is bolder in flavor, and the Atlantic Cod is mild but still very flavorful. The atmosphere is very chill. They have community tables, individual belly tables and a bar all in one big room. Service is warm and friendly. Parking is limited in their lot, but that didn't seem to prevent people from coming. Really enjoyed this spot for a lovely, chill place to grab a beer plus some unexpectedly delicious Thai bites! We lucked out weather wise so the patio and large garage door were open so everyone could experience the beautiful summer weather. We found a table and were immediately greeted by our awesome server - so attentive and friendly! I ordered their Mexican Lager inspired beer (sorry, can't recall the name, but it is the only one on the menu) and then we ordered some shareable bites including the pork belly, fries, and crab pad thai. The food was excellent all around - hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to it is a close tie between the fries and pork belly. Definitely check this spot out! read more

O.M.G. I LOVE BB!!!!!! The decor is gorge, the staff is accommodating, the tunes are popping, the food is wicked and the beers are the bomb! I have family that lives in St. John's and I visit every summer. This is just what downtown St. John's needed, I just love the heady beers and the vibe of this place. During my visit I've already been here twice and I foresee going back one more time before I head home. We enjoyed the pilsner, pale, IPA, sour, lager and every single one was dope as hell. The only thing we haven't tried yet is the coffee, it looks heavenly and we will have to get a cup next time. The food is awesome and I love to see more vegetarian options on the menu. Meat eaters.... don't you worry they have many options for you too. During our first visit we enjoyed the french fry nachos and the deep fried cauliflower and it was so good that when we went back the second time we ordered the cauliflower again. I'll be dreaming of the food when I'm back home. The staff was great and very helpful, they even suggested another bar for us to check out Tos.Low! We will definitely take there recommendation. Wandered past here as a tourist on a walk down from Signal Hill. The place looked interesting and lively, so we went in for a beer and a snack. Turns out that we stumbled upon a local gem! A big, bright space with large windows. Great beer, and a damn good chicken burger. There was live music happening upstairs. This is a well-styled brewery that makes a statement about the craft beer scene in St John's. Can't wait to be able to visit again on a future trip to NL! read more

Today, after our strenuous hike of Signal Hill, my husband and I decided to enjoy a beer at Bannerman Brewery. It felt awkward sitting at a table with strangers, but everyone else was doing it so we just went with the flow. It took a while for our waiter to take our order. We ordered two beer and assumed, which I know you should never do, that he would come back to take our food order. He did not return. We had to flag him down to order nachos. Our food came. We were not given plates, napkins or forks. Not one time did he ask if we wanted another beer or any thing else to eat or drink. So with sour cream and cheese all over our hands and face, we paid, without leaving a tip. Something I never do. The beer was delicious and the nachos were pretty good too, but the service sucked. And looking around, we were not the only ones who lacked attention from our waiter. read more
