I got the mayu ramen to-go, and I enjoyed the broth and toppings. I would have preferred a few more toppings. The broth was rich, although I would have liked to taste more of the black garlic oil. The bamboo, chashu, and egg were well marinated and flavorful. The chashu was soft but not too fatty. The staff were very friendly, and my order came in an insulated reusable bag, which was nice.

The server was very nice, it doesn't seem like they have very much help but they are quick food is fresh and tastes great. I also loved the Decor, it's a cute little spot. I wasn't so impressed with the Ramen broth It seemed to be lacking some seasoning in comparison to other Ramen spots I've tried but nonetheless it's a nice flavor & fresh ingredients. I got chicken instead of pork. Also beware of the spice level, as it really is SPICY. I was coughing and sipping at the same time. Get a mild or medium spicy. - coming from a spicy food eater. They seem to have a lot of traffic but they are efficient. Street parking is a bit hard to find, beware of that. It's hard to see the restaurant at first, it's tucked around the street corner. You must try the soft shell crab, was a 10/10. Genmaicha was also very good.

A good mom and pop ramen shop with generous portions, flavorful broth, and chewy noodles. I got the Bansho ultimate ramen, medium spicy, and it came with more chashu than I've ever gotten in a Bay Area ramen bowl! The owners were friendly and the Sapporo was ice cold :)

Terrible service. Sushi is good and the place is cute but I didn't have a good experience.

food - both ramens we tried were really flavorful and the pork belly was incredibly tender and not overly fatty at all. the only downside was lack of broth as i've never experienced ramen where it was served with broth at half the level of the food inside. at least it tasted strong enough and maybe avoided any washed out flavor. the egg was perfectly cooked for the ramen and the crispy onion was a really great touch. the portion was very filling as well. - the nigiri was HUGE and although it's not the highest quality of fish but for the thickness and size, it's worth its cost for a quick salmon fix ($5 for 2 pieces) service - okay service, not very welcoming demeanors but we were also in and out quick so there were not many opportunities to interact with tbem

A solid 2 to 2.5 stars restaurant. Rounding it up because it's a mom and pop shop and I hate to give a lower score. My suggestion is to come to this place for ramen only and skip all other items on their menu. The sauce they used on their rolls was wayyyy too sweet and overpowered the taste. Also, I questioned the quality and freshness of their sashimi. In terms of ramen, it was flavorful but it was on the oily side. I ordered their famous, recommended bansho ramen with pork belly and ground pork, so I guess that was expected.

I came here once & had to bring my husband bc he LOVES Ramen. We have tried many ramens spots & this place is by far our favorite. The broth is perfection. Service is great as well & the inside + bathrooms are super clean! If you're in the area you NEED to try.

We came to Bansho for lunch during their spring break so it was not a very busy day. The waitress seemed like she did not want to be there - I think she might have been the owner's daughter and/or it was spring break so I get that We ordered the karaage, Tonkotsu pork, and Bansho Ultimate. The karaage chicken was alright, I think the skin was a little soft but it was tasty. The Tonkotsu pork was the big disappointment. It didn't have any flavor or richness that is expected from tonkotsu ramen. Fortunately, the Bansho Ultimate was a little more flavorful. The thing is the competition in the area is stiff and there are a good number of ramen shops in the area. For the prices Bansho is charging, you expect a really tasty bowl of ramen, but I would probably end up going elsewhere in Berkeley

You should try the sake nigiri! It's only $5 and they have a generous portion size! It's slightly larger than average. I got the build your own because I wasn't too hungry and just needed something to satisfy myself. I added pork belly and corn. You have the option to choose your broth and the spicy level for the build your own.

Great cheap eats in Berkeley! Onion Ramen - Flavorful broth. Comes with a side of pork tonkatsu. Seaweed Salad - fresh Agedashi Tofu - really good. Best one I've had so far. California Roll - it's was okay. Too much rice. Chicken Karaage - Crispy crunchy with a great dipping sauce Service was decent. Food came out fast. I like the small servings because it's just the perfect amount of food at good prices.

The food was good! I recommend the Bansho ramen (8/10) Way more flavor than the regular tonkatsu (7/10) but the tonkatsu does come with deep fried pork on the side which was not too oily (8.5/10). The service was good. I think it's a mom and pop shop which was very cute! You can definitely taste flavors of the long hours that the broth has been cooking for. We also got the 49er roll which was not too bad as well (6.8/10). But the main highlight was the bansho ramen.

Came after being out all day on a chilly day and was more than satisfied. A good place to relax and eat. Tried the Mayu ramen and enjoyed it a lot. Not as many toppings as there are in other ramen houses, but to be completely honest, I enjoyed this change immensely. It really highlighted the flavor of the broth, chewy noodles, and the amazing chashu (which was incredibly soft and pretty large). Pleasant service as well!

It may be a bit tricky especially around meal time, but keep circling and you'll find a spot near by enough. This cute little ramen shop has such perfect lighting coming through thanks to thier skylight. We weren't actually hungry so we shared the following: TONKOTSU - $16.50 (Regular) Pork Belly Chashu, Bamboo Shoots, Red Onion, Wood Ear Mushrooms, Green Onion, Ajitama Egg. You get a choice of noodles to pick: 1.) Hakata - Thin Straight 2.) Sapporo - Medium Thick Wavy Figured since it's my first time here, I choose the most basic version of their bowl of ramen. I chose Sapparo and for some reason expected it to be thicker/wider, but regardless it was still good! The presentation of this bowl is just gorgeous, served on a small wooden platter. The red onion is chopped, and the pork Belly is quite tender. Regarding the egg, you get just half. Overall this bowl of ramen is creamy, rich, and the right amount of flavor and salt. But still make sure to drink at least a glass of water! CREAMY CHASHU PORK CROQUETTES - $8.50 I have never seen anything like this so I must give it a try! It actually didn't come out piping hot, so I was able to drive in right away! It was definitely creamy (like ramen) and had pieces of the Chau's pork, encased in a crispy and warm batter that was deep fried. It also comes with a katsu sauce and I really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and didn't make us feel bad for ordering enough of just one, but man I was so full. Had to walk around downtown Berkeley for awhile.

We entered a few minutes before peak dinner times, so there were seats to choose and sit from. By the time we left, mostly all the seats were filled up, so I would suggest coming in early. I liked the naming for each of the ramen dishes, some I recognized the names from Hawai'i. For this round, we ordered 3 different types of ramen: the Kuni, Broke da Mouth, and the Miso Hungry. These orders also came around the same time. A notable elements I liked about the ramen was that the noodles were chewy and springy, and the broth was smooth and easy to drink. I also didn't have the urge to drink lots of water either, so the seasoning was perfect. The other element was that I got to enjoy the ramen's broth and noodles as the stars of the dish, and the proteins, like the pork were supporting roles. For me, what I enjoy ramen are the broth and noodles, so I'm happy that these are prominent in the dish, rather than me having other chow down a thick slab of pork. This restaurant hit the right marks for what a delicious ramen is for me, so I'll come back, and maybe try their other broths.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

If you're going for the first time (or even if you're not), do yourself a favor and get the beef or nikutama. The broth is rich, savory, and comforting, and the noodles have that perfect chewy texture that makes every bite worth it. It's simple food done really well. And don't skimp on the tempura. That's where people mess up. Load up your tray--shrimp, sweet potato, whatever catches your eye. It's crispy, fresh, and honestly half the experience. Quick, casual, and consistently delicious. Hard to miss here.

Street parking which wasn't hard to find is about $4 per hour. I was able to park literally right in front of the restaurant. Came on a Thursday around 2pm. We ordered: 1. Large Nakutama (cold): I've had this dish before a bunch of times and today the broth or meat had an odd taste to it. It almost tasted gamey like they meat was old or something. About 40 mins later I had a pretty bad stomach ache and had to use the restroom. Not sure if it was a coincidence or what. My wife had a small amount and agreed that there was an odd taste but she didn't have any stomach issues after eating it (but she also only had a small bite). 2. Large Shrimp BK: This was alright. The noodles were significantly overcooked and bloated. Not sure how that happened since they looked like they were freshly making it. The shrimp tempura was good though. 3. Tempura Pumpkin, potato Croque, Sweet potato and Crab: Honestly the tempura was the best item on the menu. I really liked the Pumpkin and imitation crab while my wife liked the sweet potato the most. Overall food quality probably 2/5 stars. The only saving grace for this location was the guy running the register who was awesome and super nice and funny. He was running around the restaurant helping out making the dishes and running the register. 5 stars for service. Location is also really nice and clean. Just very disappointed with the food quality.
