We're briefly updating our commentary about the Bantam Market, but our thoughts about it haven't changed all that much. It remains a small, independently owned store with a surprisingly full stock, lots of fresh meats, deli items, produce, a large beer cooler with all the local and foreign brands you night desire, and a very friendly and helpful staff. We're especially fond of the nice folks behind the deli counter. Our complaints are about the same: the prices hover on the high side. The prices are generally quite a bit higher than the nearby Stop and Shop, but honestly, the quality of their locally produced items is far higher. Still, if you're buying some basics like soup or milk, you'll pay more here, and some prices can be really way up there. Sometimes we're frustrated by that, other times we're grateful to find some delicious fresh fish or prepared salads. Bantam is not our first market of choice, but we're here regularly for some things we like and want. read more

A small neighborhood market with a kickin' deli. Not really the place to do "normal grocery shopping", as others have previously stated, it's on the expensive side (in some cases, outrageously so). But if you're looking for unique food items, this is your place. For me, I stop in often just to pick up some fried chicken from the deli, it's the best around -- juicy & meaty, but not greasy, and the coating is very tasty. $6.99 a pound. That fried chicken is 5 Stars every time. Friendly crew, but the checkout can be a bit of a process though, the place does a brisk business, and the parking lot is always full. read more

Last year when I stopped by I bought the best seafood salad with artichoke. This year when I stopped by, they didn't have it. :( Maybe next year? I hope. They upgraded the meat and fish and it's really very good now. They added craft beers - best selection in the area. Fresh local produce is very good - kudos for that. But their pricing is still ridiculous. Why do I want to pay $6.40 for Triscuits that Stop n Shop sells for $2.50-$3.00? Why are everyday prices 50% more than in other local stores like LaBonne's and BigY and Shop Rite. It feels like greedflation. read more

I thought I would miss the old Big Value especially seeing as how i worked for the Canciani family for years. Considering the alternatives in the area ; I have to say that I really love this store , its staff and the odd assortment of products they carry. Contrary to popular opinion, the prices aren't terrible but who doesn't mind paying more for better quality especially in the meat department. The produce department is well laid out with a very extensive line of organic products but the produce is pricey. The produce needs a sprucing up is my only complaint as lately it hasn't been up to its normal standards. read more

I recently moved to the area and had done some shopping at Bantam Market. I bought a pkg. of Hamburg. I found it to be brown inside and funny looking and it didn't smell right. I decided to return it the next day, rather than risk it and get sick. I was very surprised when the butcher was called over and he started lecturing me about meat. Said brown is its natural color, that it didnt oxidize. He was very rude and talking down to me. The other 2 managers just stood there and said nothing, He said it was fine and he wouldn't refund my money. I said well just on being a dissatisfied customer wouldn't you just refund me. He then said in a harsh voice GO. I said what, he said get out. I was so humiliated and shocked. I had never been treated like that before. No one said a word to defend me. I will never forget that day, and regret moving up to Bantam. I am still looking for a number to talk to the owner and tell him how I was treated. read more

Ventured out to the market today, as I rarely do during this COVID time, to pick up some specialty food. I had a generic list based on what would be fresh & available. I have cognitive/motor disabilities which required assistance from my care-giver. We parked in accessible parking. The person at the door would not permit us both to enter the store due to their COVID policy. I explained, thru my mask, that I required assistance due to disability & he was very curt & unsympathetic. He was emphatic that regardless of Americans with Disability, ADA, and my condition, only one person could enter. We turned around and left. Shame, shame, shame on you Bantam Market! My son interviewed well there and wanted to work. He has his own car and was willing to tailor his hours to their requested shifts. Brett was too cowardly to tell him he wasn't hired. Instead, he led a 17 year old boy on for months. Really cruel behavior on the part of management. Not shopping there anymore and somebody needs to check on their so called management and people skills. Don't advertise for help then play games. Waste of time. Stay away from this place. read more

Bantam Market is like the Whole Foods of Litchfield, Ct! I absolutely love and appreciate the array of products, giftables and food choices. The deli area has an array of different pre made salads, meals and Asian & Jewish cuisine. They also have a chef come in to exclusively prepare sushi. The but her shop also has a nice array of meats and marinated items you can easily throw on the grille. The family who owns this grocery store has been in business for 50 years and the love and care that goes into selling and assisting is rare. Bantam Market is one of my favorite markets in the area. Coming from city living for over a decade, it is nice to have a market that offers an eclectic array ingredients etc you can use to cook any authentic meal. Largest Gluten Free selection in the area as well! Between baked goods, cakes, pasta and breads ... you can't miss out if you have a gluten allergy. They also have a kombucha bar where you can fill up your own growlers. The beer selection is pretty nice too! Cheers! read more

This place is like a small amusement park for people who want to play with food. I don't know why I may need Pumpkin Seed Oil or avocado based potato chips, but these things just seem like so much fun! Mixed in with the more exotic is the more day-to-day, so it really does have something for everyone, even those who fear to stray from blue-box macaroni. That being said, the prices are higher than what you may find at a more generic chain, so shop strategically. A lot of products are local; I shop there as an excuse to browse while getting my milk from Litchfield cows. The dessert offerings will make you gain five pounds just to look at them - today there was a slice of red velvet cake with chocolate glaze that looks AMAZING... But I settled for the smaller chocolate with cream cheese filling. Delicious! Their deli also may be the best I've found in the local area - they're the only ones who understand "cheese" may mean more than one limp little slice. The employees are always nice, and the only time I've had to wait was when one person was in front of me at the deli. For those with a Litchfield library card, they also have a vending machine with an assortment of books. read more

Thank you Yelp for leading me here for lunch! I was in the area with 20 mins to spare for lunch, so I figured this would be my best bet. It is your typical small town grocery store, however, they have an awesome deli counter with many options for sandwiches, salads, soup, etc. I ordered the veggie burger sandwich (veggie burger made right in house) with multigrain bread. It was SO GOOD....and this is coming from a self-proclaimed veggie burger snob. Prices were nice and cheap as well, making this a great daily stop if you're in the area. Don't let the grocery store facade fool you! read more

Decent sized supermarket with quite an array of options. Fresh vegetables and fruits, coffee, deli, etc. Very tidy, nicely displayed, and and a good selection of organic foods. I absolutely fell in love with the Kombucha station where you can fill and refill your kombucha of choose. It's only $3.99 for a new one with the bottle, and $2.99 for refills. We bought some quiches that were not only inexpensive, but absolutely yummy! Only thing that sucked was that they were having some issues and not accepting credit card payment. Thankfully they have an ATM where you can take out cash. read more

High prices....hyper covid paranoia....they need to wake up and smell the coffee...no shortage of other choices

Wouldn't allow me in to grab a hand full of groceries since I had my 5 year old daughter with me due to Covid restrictions. If that's your policy that's fine, however they allowed 3 gentlemen in together, in 1 vehicle as I waited to enter. When I questioned it I was told they are local police detectives...what? Rules are rules, apply them equally. Then he tried to explain it saying they ordered there lunch and are picking it up. When I tried to order lunch so we could pick it up together I was told my 5 year old will have to wait outside. Never coming back here again that's for sure. read more

Stand in line at the deli counter and watch what happens on a busy day. It amazes me that a place this organized doesn't have numbers for customers in the deli line. Not being of tall stature, I don't stand a chance against the aggressive New Yorker's who belly up to the counter to order their Gourmet delicacies, yankee pot roast and Brussel sprouts. Many great options, and a lot of potential at this store, but the deli has some flaws. read more

This market has just about everything a tasty pallet could desire! Freshest produce section filled with the best variety! The fresh seafood and sushi counter has all the makings a seafood lover needs! And the deli..........omg so delicious it could be a restaurant all by itself! Watch out for the fried chicken! The usual town market... slightly over priced but were in litchfield. They have a great selection of local products- ice cream, milk, pastries. They have good pre made food, good produce, and the beer cooler is one of the best I have ever been in. Great selection. There's always at least 3 kinds of beer I have to try. read more

This is our go to market in the area. The owners are terrific and the store crew reflects their values. The products are very good and targeting a higher income/more discerning customer. their deli/prepared foods are excellent. meats are high quality. Breads range from standard to unique. Prices are fair but occasionally you will find items out of line with the market. For example, they sell inside skirt steaks for $19.99 when Stop n Shop regularly sells for 10.99. Tomatillos are priced at $5.99 when $1.49 elsewhere. The store is clean, the staff friendly, and parking is convenient. read more

I spent a recent weekend renting a place on Bantam lake, a mile or so from this market. We loved the market so much that we all (6 of us) stopped there to pick up some of their amazing fried chicken on our way home from the weekend getaway. This is one of those "if they don't have it, you don't need it kind of places." They have a nice produce section, really good dairy/cheese selection, sushi, a fabulous fresh fish and meat section....there wasn't a thing that they didn't have going on (even a decent craft beer section). I will be returning to the area in the future and I'm certain I will be swinging by Bantam Market again. read more

I love this place and I love the employees, who are as nice and friendly as they can be. I read the bad review, and I cannot imagine what Anonymous did. Whatever it was, the experience was obviously not pleasant. But, was it warranted on her behavior? We only have her side of the story. They have local and other organic produce -- what more can you ask? And a wonderful selection of meats, cheeses, coffees baked goods, etc. I have been shopping there since I move to the area in 2013. Our family of 7 are in town for a wedding for the next 6 days and we stopped in to to grab something for dinner to throw on the grill at our rental house. (We saw a customer walk in the store as we pulled in) but I guess they were closing up because right after we walked in they started staring at us and locking the doors. I stopped at this really cool self serve kombucha station and the sign said "ask an associate for a sample cup". I asked a young girl and she briefly looked around the station and said sorry we don't have anymore. I thought to myself really??? Or are you just too lazy to go get them. She claimed she didn't work in that department. Guess i won't be buying any then. We quickly got what we needed but felt like every employee was staring at us the entire time. The employees were all very unfriendly and obviously ready to lock up and go home. As an out of town guest we felt very un welcome. Won't be going back. read more

This place has its pro's and con's. They have done a good job bringing some specialty, international, and organic choices to the local scene. On the other hand, their pricing is high to the point of being predatory in some cases. I don't mind paying a little more to save a trip to other markets, but items like the cheese case, prime meat, and fresh fish are available at a LOT less in other places within a 20 minute drive. The prepared foods are definitely a cut above the typical local store. You'll almost always find something that looks good. Some of the meat dishes are made with sub-standard cuts and are tough and flavorless, but others are tasty. The prepared foods are quite expensive for what you get, but that's the price of convenience I guess. They're definitely better than at Northville, LaBonne's or Stop&Shop, even at inflated prices. Try it out, see what you think. It's a big improvement over the typical small-town store. read more

NASTY people. A woman berated my 8 year old son for touching the olive oil dispenser. And WAAAAAAAAAY overpriced for average quality. It caters to NYers coming to the area and costs twice as much as Stop n Shop. Better to go Market 32 in Torrington for produce, specialty food at Dutch Epicure. And Litchfield Locker for meats. Somehow Bantam Market is staffed with both nice and horrible people. My spouse and I used to shop there on a weekly basis for their fresh produce, until the day when some employee gave my husband's description to the police regarding a shoplifting affair (that he had nothing to do with...). After he was wrongfully handcuffed, detained, and later vindicated, the manager, instead of apologizing to him behalf of the store, said: "If you behave well next time you're in my store I won't call the cops on you". Extremely rude. We have always been a law-abiding citizens. You won't get our business again, or my friends' and my family's. read more

This is a great boutique market. In many ways it cannot compete against Big Y or Stop n Shop on price and selection. Yet, when you go to the store you see they compete effectively with unique product, a strong prepared foods to go operation, a very good meat market, and a great selection of unique/gourmet products in frozen, dry goods, and Dairy. I only see their produce department as weak because they do not get the product turnover David, the operator, is passionate about the business and it shows. He works with his team to maintain good customer service levels and a clean environment. He also does special orders. This is not a neighborhood market nor a supermarket. It is a good specialty market with trendy and organic ingredients and a focus on quality. read more

This store used to be Big Value Supermarket but they reopened recently as a more upscale Bantam Market with a new owner and under new management. This is my first time in the store and I can say having been at the old store, it has undergone a complete transformation. The selection is fresher and of a much higher quality than the predecessor store offered. There are many healthy options including granola and the gluten free selection is extensive. read more

Oh No, the locals don't like it! Well my goodness -- progress is always a little difficult for those who hate change. But seriously -- this is a great market with VERY friendly local folks running it (Warren, CT, not San Francisco). I now live in Cornwall Bridge and will go there in preference to Sharon Farm Market. Fish dept is wonderful -- they gave us oysters in the half shell for Xmas Eve (tried to do a 7 fishes menu but only had three). I don't mean they gave them to us -- we paid for them. But they opened them quite willingly. Yummy! I have lived and shopped all over the world, including recently in organic markets in Beijing and New York City. I do not mind Whole Foods but I hate Trader Joe's (I like fresh produce). Bantam Mkt is a great place and my husband and I really enjoy shopping there! Raves from the two of us! read more

This is a nice supermarket, good selection of produce, meat and groceries. It is clean and bright with gluten free offerings. Prepared foods at the deli counter are not very good, however. If you can - visit the sister store (Northville Market) for fresh made salads and entrees. Many more healthy, creative and tasty options to choose from. read more
