This is by far my favorite supermarket in Litchfield County! The owners are friendly, local individuals who work in their stores every single day, and they offer the best alternative/organic selection around. They charge more for their services, yes, but that's the cost of small business. They can't afford to buy in mass quantity like the big guys, and that's okay! That's why they have such a strong following. On a side note, these guys have the best local produce in the summer, and the greatest deli/take-out selection for those many tiring nights when I don't feel like cooking. Fun and friendly place to shop small. Lots of locally produced items and the only grocery store around with raw milk! It boasts a great seafood department and deli. If the cute sushi station is manned they will make it to order :) and you can have a free small coffee while you shop. My husband loves the refrigerated beer room with almost all the local microbreweries represented. Some standard grocery items are more expensive than the larger grocery stores, but they have great sales, and some unique items, so we shop there often! read more

I have rarely encountered the attitude I received at this store. My dog accidentally escaped from my car and, like most dog owners would be, I was very upset and worried about my dog's wellbeing while at the same time apologetic to the store personnel and other shoppers. But instead of trying to help, this unbelievably unfriendly individual (female, brunette, aged - I guess - in her 30s or 40s) treated me like a criminal and embarrassed me in front of the other employees and shoppers. Why anyone would allow a person like her to work in retail - or any customer-facing business for that matter - is a mystery to me. He even created individual wraps for guests with dietary restrictions in addition to making delicious wraps, beautiful salads and yummy desserts for 150 people. I've worked here for a little over a year now and I couldn't be any happier. The managers and owners are awesome people and go out of their way for customers and employees. I've heard a lot of people complain about price and this is what typically irritates me. The store is almost always immaculate, costumer service is top of the line, we are a smaller non-corporate business, and have items that you can find nowhere else. The small price increase is more than justified when these are factored in. Shopping at the Bantam Market isn't a chore. It's a fantastic experience that I recommend to anybody in the Litchfield Area. If you want quality, amazing customer service, variety, and a store that you can trust, you know where to find us. They also play the Beach Boys sometimes so +10 brownie points to whoever runs the radio station. Seriously though I freaking love this place. read more

HORRIBLE customer service by presumably the Manager on duty today. I've been shopping there weekly for 6 weeks or so since I discovered this place; and have spent a premium. Yesterday I tried a new coffee that was touted as "Local" and French Roast. One, is that I should have realized we DO NOT have "local" coffee in the Northeast region. Second, this coffee was ANYTHING BUT French Roast. Thirdly, my mistake again, was that in tiny, tiny letters on the packaging, it states "decaf...". Today, I tried to return the coffee after opening it, and was prepared to buy a more expensive brand that I know. The manager looked at me with this insipid look on her face, and one of disgust as if I were vile for trying to return something that was already opened; despite protesting about the quality, the misleading shelf label, and my making it clear that I made no attempt to try and make it look like it was never opened. I also had my receipt. She would not accept my return. I left her with the coffee, took my receipt out of her hand, and walked out without buying the new coffee. Then, I went to the Big Y, and bought the same coffee that I was going to buy there as a replacement, for 3.00 less. I will never shop The Bantam Market again. These guys have some good stuff, some bad. Fine. What's not OK is that everywhere you look you see reminders of how greedy and deceptive they are. There are 8 kinds of "gourmet" sandwich spreads, but only one brand of good old American mayo that everybody actually wants. I guess they think we'll get frustrated looking and buy the $7.50 special sandwich sauce instead of the $2.00 Hellmans. It's the same all over. Way overpriced beer vs. the liquor store down the road for the same brands. Way overpriced on cheeses, produce, breads, etc etc. Staples like ice cream, cleaning supplies, breads -- way overpriced. These guys ought to hide their greed a little better. Sooner or later they're going to realize they drove their customers into the arms of Super Stop and Shop, coming soon in Litchfield. read more

This place ROCKS!! This is a top-shelf SPECIALITY market, i.e., not a SUPERmarket and, yes, cannot compete with the S+S's of the world! For health-conscious folks who love that hometown feel of friendly, warm service, it can't be beat. Before buying my home in Bethlehem, I lived briefly in New Preston and LOVED the Northville Market; I was thrilled to find out the same owners had another market and it did not disappoint. I have since discovered by accident that this place has amazing fresh wraps to go ... you can tell they're made fresh each day! The unique brands for salsas and other condiments, as well as the great specialty tea selections is what keeps me hooked and driving the 15-20 minutes to get here. Bravo!! Keep up the good work ... I'd love to see the take out department do even more as this is an area that is lacking in our area. read more

Where do I start? I guess the best place to start is at the beginning! In the beginning there was a general food market here. I am talking back in the late 50's as I remember. Fast forward to what is now the Bantam Market. The new owner has really transformed this store into a near tourist stop. They have a wonderful array of specialty breads, cheese, gourmet sauces, a sushi bar which includes an impressive array of VERY fresh fish; both cooked and raw. I love the organic assortment of fruits and vegetables they offer. Their deli is second to none! Their vast offering of store made salads are terrific. Directly across from the deli you can find many ready made meals to take home which i find very convenient, and delicious! The popularity of their deli area is evidenced if you are there around lunch time. I buy my olive oil at this store because they carry my favorite brand. In this niche there is no lack of choice. Friendly, helpful, and a shopping experience to consistently enjoy. I find most everything I need, and want at this great market. Big enough to serve my needs and small enough to care about me as a regular customer! I recommend Bantam Market too everyone. read more

Tried to return an unsatisfactory item and couldn't have been treated more RUDELY by the female manager and male owner ! There employee messes up my order and the manager and owner were RUDE and SARCASTIC ! Who needs to be treated like that and get ripped off at the same time ! As chef for many years I wasn't impressed with Bantam Deli. I went there for a roast beef, lettuce, tomato and mayo sandwich on a roll. I got my sandwich but the wait and cost for it was ridiculous for 2 slices of roast beef...$7.00 dollars for that!! read more

AVOID THIS STORE AT ALL COSTS. DON'T WALK, RUN RUN RUN FROM THIS PLACE! It was a really good place when the new owners took over. Fast forward to August 21, 2015 and you'll find the current offerings mediocre at best. I purchase a lot of organic and specialty products, and this market is very overpriced. I compared 21 items that I purchase on a regular prices to the same items in Stop & Shop ( and I do mean specifically exact same item and same brand), and these items would cost me $27.93 more at Bantam Supermarket vs Stop & Shop. Additionally, they have a display of baked goods such as cake slices, tarts, cheesecake, etc. PROCEED WITH CAUTION, THE DATES ON THESE ITEMS MEAN NOTHING. I have experienced cake that was crusty on the edges, tarts that were dried out, etc. To add insult to injury, I have spoken directly to the owner about this and nothing has changed! So, apparently he just doesn't care! I'll add one more thing, they have pre-made breakfast sandwiches that they make each morning and place in a hot case for people who are on their way to work. They make, bacon egg & cheese, ham, egg & cheese, sausage, egg & cheese. Get this NO EGG & CHEESE. I didn't realize it was so difficult to just leave the meat off the sandwich for those of us who don't want meat! I have asked the owner, deli manager, other other miscellaneous employees, again with no results. The deli clerk says that they will make a plain egg & cheese sandwich only if you request it! If you're on your way to work you generally don't have time to wait! Most every item in this store is so overpriced it's sickening! It is readily apparent that the owners David and Deb are interested in just bilking people for every last penny they can! Sure, the weekend people from New York think it's a bargain, and probably is in comparison to the prices in New York City. NEWS FLASH DAVID AND DEB THIS ISN'T NEW YORK CITY. I almost forgot to mention one more thing, the deli clerk this morning felt it was appropriate to be snarky to me when I addressed him regarding breakfast sandwiches. I WANT DAVID AND DEB TO KNOW THAT I HAVE NO INTENTION OF GIVING YOU EVEN ONE MORE CENT OF MY MONEY AND WILL ENCOURAGE EVERYONE THAT I KNOW TO STAY AWAY! I am writing this review to future customers in hopes of not buying rotten meat like I did. I bought chicken strips which when I cooked and bit into I found green chicken inside. Very nasty. I also bought chicken legs which I later found that were bad. They had a grey ish color to them. I also bought some ground meat and 2 things of little steaks. I went there to get a refund of all meats because I did not feel safe eating the rest of the meats an also uncovering a review back in 2012 of a employee saying that they repackage meats as grade a meats and meats being sold way past shelf life. I did not receive a refund of the other meats and the owner gave me an attitude about trying to return the other meats saying that they weren't bad and he did no say once sry about the inconvenience or anything like that. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Look at the the other reviews about this place. It should be with the one if you click the other review place and not just the ones you see on the first page. Very poor customer service and ownership. read more
