Went there for the first time today; the place was really cute and they have an awesome patio section. Of course, during this time of the year when hurricanes are about to blow past, it was too hot to sit outside. I could definitely see myself sitting out there in the evening with all the string of lights lit up, enjoying the fountain in the middle. Upon entering the place, the staff was super friendly and attentive. Our waiter 'Johnny' was on point and always making sure that we were OK. My BFF and I usually go to lunch to dine and not eat like we're at a fast food restaurant. So after letting our waiter know that we were not in a rush, he was tentative enough without being scarcely seen. The quality and the freshness of the food was on point. I got the Pho and my BFF got the noodle bowl. No matter the time of year, I'm always in the mood for Vietnamese Cuisine and Bao hits the spot every time! I normally go for the Rare steak pho as it's some of the best in town. Other than the pho, I recommend the the grilled skewered rice plate. The pork is seasoned to perfection and the fish sauce is a great topping for the rice and vegetables. The Bao Egg Rolls Are hands down the best egg rolls in Baton Rouge. Let's also not forget about their chicken wings as they are delicious. Maybe we hit it on a bad day, but my husband ordered a chicken and pork skin plate, and I had the wonton soup. I was a bit surprised when it cost $3 to add noodles to the wonton soup, and very surprised to see iceberg lettuce as the only green in the soup. Why not book choy, broccoli, anything besides iceberg lettuce chopped up? The wontons themselves were good, soup broth was good, and good portion of soup, wontons, and beef. I took half home. My husband shows me a pork skin so frozen he can't bend it, and they brought him a new portion appropriately room temp to slightly cold. Nothing bad to say on our visit. We had a party of 15 so we expected the wait. Everything was executed very well. Kids and adults all loved the fish sauce wings and Saigon egg rolls. Wings and egg rolls were crispy. Saigon egg rolls had a coconut taste to it which really suited my palate. I love Vietnamese foods and all the dishes impressed me. Very fragrant and tasty. The ambience is very nice; but also reflected in the pricing. There is a nice and roomy outdoor eating area should you prefer. My husband was happy with his combination pho, of course he adds a bunch of seasonings to his before he tastes it. I had the meatball pho; I felt the broth didn't quite have the depth, for the lack of a better word, that I've tasted in others But still very good after I added a small amount of seasonings. The veggies were fresh and the taro coconut tea was very good. We've been getting a lot of old tasting springrolls from recent places but they tasted fresh here. John, our waiter, was very pleasant and there when we needed. He was also very helpful with the questions we had regarding food we were unfamiliar with. We ordered Vietnamese bbq Banh Mi to go and while the ingredients were fresh and the sauce good, the bread was so hard I couldn't really enjoy it. Tried this place for the first time last night. The setup was really nice, clean, and modern. Decent prices for wine and beer. Service was fantastic. My husband and I split the chicken wings sauced in fish sauce as an appetizer. They came out piping hot and delicious. My husband got the cold cuts and pate banh mi and said that it was awesome. I got the rare steak pho. It rivaled my favorite pho in Baton Rouge. Add some of their basil, a squeeze of lime juice, and a spoon or two of the chili paste and the broth is perfect. The service was bad and the food was mediocre. It is a little pricey for not a big portion of food. Most Vietnamese restaurants you go to now a days will give you a decent portion, but not this place. They try to market up the food from their other competitors because of its atmosphere, but that's not even all that great either. For appetizer I had the Bao Eggrolls. It was a little weird because it looked very crispy, but when I bit into it it was full of grease. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. The flavor was flat, but at least it wasn't greasy. Our server waited 10 minutes from when we sat down to ask for our drink orders. He lack enthusiasm, and checked on us once the whole time we ate. The employees were a little unprofessional. LOVE that they play Vietnamese music softly in the background. Staff: Everyone was so nice - From the hostess to the owner. Food Thai Tea: Was pretty good - Not overly sweet with tapioca pearls. Cha Gio Saigon(Gluten Free Egg Rolls) - These do take a little longer to make, but they are worth the wait. The recipe is extremely authentic and delicious. Bo Kho Hu Tieu(Beef Stew with Noodles) - The meat was really tender, flavorful, and plentiful. (Not a lot of places offer this dish in BR). Banh Mi Thit Nguoi(Cold Cuts Banh Mi) - The bread is the best from Dong Phuong in New Orleans. The flavors again are very authentic from the pate to the preparation of the meat. The sauce on the side is very unique as well. Pho Bo: The broth is very light and authentic, the way pho broth is supposed to be. You can taste the different spices and beef flavor without all the saltiness/sodium. Price: The value is ridiculous. The price for the amount of quality food is crazy. It didn't blow my mind but it was pretty good, however they are generous with their meat portions! Recently I tried their wonton soup which is a HUGE bowl with not only the wontons, but also more meat... the broth is even more delicious the next day. For drinks I've tried their vietnamese iced coffee-- very, very good. I also tried for the very first time the taro coconut milk tea, which is an iced, cold drink that kind of reminds me of the cereal milk left in the bowl after eating fruit loops or something. Definitely sweet and very good. Since I was already feeling brave I decided to add boba to my drink, and it was fun chewing the gummy pearls through that super sized straw. The environment was amazing. Everything was super brand new, and the restaurant had a refreshing sensation in the air. Even the bathrooms were pretty nice and clean. The front of the restaurant was really grand as well. All of the waiters there were super nice and could speak Vietnamese as well. When I came in, I was seated immediately. The service was amazing and the chairs were also really comfy. It only took about 10-15 minutes for the food to come out. It is a little expensive but there was a lot of food! Bao is definitely my go-to place whenever I'm in Baton Rouge. If you're looking for good Vietnamese food at a reasonable price, then Bao is a must try. Some of my favorite dishes are the Bao egg rolls, the Tamarind Chicken Wings, the Cold Cuts & Pate Banh Mi, and the Rare & Brisket Pho. Bao also has its own drink menu which makes the place a great stop if you're having a sweet tooth. I highly recommend the Thai Tea and Almond Milk Tea, but my all-time favorite is definitely the Basil Seeds & Coconut drink. The service is pretty good, and the staff is very attentive and helpful when it comes to the customers, which is always a plus. Very clean and spacious. I love the ambiance of this restaurant! The ice coffee and the other specialty drink tasted sweet enough to order another of each. The font size of the menu made it hard to read, but the taste of the food made up for it! All the savory dishes that we ordered tasted delicious: springs rolls, rice plate and pork banh mi sandwich. The Vietnamese dessert was okay, but I probably would not order it again. The name Bao, even though not intentional might mislead people to believe that they have Bao Buns on the menu when they do not. The owner named the restaurant after himself, which is cool, but I can see how people would be disappointed when they are sitting down at their table searching frantically for the bao buns. When I complained they did not offer to fix it and implied I should have known to ask for it separately, even tho the menu specifically calls it out as being RARE. A friend told me about Bao Vietnamese Kitchen opening so I wanted to give it a try! The owner's name is Bao, otherwise people may think it's a type of food. Walking in, it's a beautiful place with wonderful decor. The bar is gorgeous with a black and white theme and in the dining area, there's a Vietnamese theme with a French twist. Behind the bar, there was a juicer and a press with oranges and stalks of sugarcane nearby. Yum! There was authentic Vietnamese music playing in the background so it felt like I was standing in a restaurant with rich culture. Attention to detail is amazing! They were very busy when we came in and we were quoted by the hostess around 45 mins. We weren't in a rush so we sat at the bar. The variety of Vietnamese meals were great, but the menu wording was small so it was a bit hard to read. They had two tvs at the bar and there was one that had a woman teaching you how to make spring rolls! I thought that was a great way to get to know Vietnamese style of cooking and preparation. After about 25-30 mins, we were called to be seated, so it was sooner than expected. My first thought was that I loved that their tables did not have preset container of utensils like chopsticks and spoons. Some Vietnamese restaurants tend to have it and I feel like it clutters the the table. The menu consisted of many options. The appetizers consisted of various types of spring rolls, egg rolls and Vietnamese chicken wings. The entrees had many favorites of Vietnamese cuisine that were broken down to categories such as banh mi sandwiches, noodle soups like pho, hu tieu and bun bo hue, rice plates, and vermicelli bowls. They had a selection of specialty drinks and che, Vietnamese ice desserts as well! The waitress took our drink orders after a few minutes. My friend got the fresh pressed sugarcane drink. She said it tasted great! We ultimately ordered two large phos, one with rare beef, which we requested on the side, and one with brisket and tendon for me. And my other friend wanted to try the bun bo hue, which is a spicy beef broth. The food took a few minutes to reach us but with it being so busy, I am always reasonable with the time. When the noodle soups came I was ready to dig in! The broth was clear and tasted great! There was a lot of noodles which there was so much that I ran out of my protein to enjoy with every bite. My friend also agreed with his pho and wanted maybe 2-3 pieces more to be happy. My other friend said she enjoyed her bun bo hue and there was plenty of meat in her meal. The waitress refilled our glasses a couple times during the meal, so I was happy she was attentive. One of the main owners came by to check on us and see how we enjoyed our meal and asked for ways we felt that they could improve the business. I thought that was a great way to improve the business and become better is by asking the customers directly. I gave her constructed criticism about a few details I'm including in my review, and she is planning to tell the owner. She also mentioned that they are planning on tweaking the menu more so they are expecting a change, including larger lettering. Whooo hoo! Overall, I love the ambiance, the soups were great and I heard great things about their other food options too, like their beef stew and banh mi so I can't wait to try! They are planning on improving so I'm expecting the next few months, it's going to be even better. Staff were great, food was good, and I'll be recommending to others for sure! The food , drinks & service was good BUT as my husband and I was eating we witnessed the most DISTURBING thing... there was another couple across from us eating as well. The whole time , the guy was coughing and sneezing (to the point we almost switched tables) .. they finished their dinner got up & left .Apparently they didn't use any of the plate of toppings they give you for your Pho... as the young lady is cleaning the table , a guy who i assume is the owner or manager because he was walking around asking everyone was their food good.. he told her she she's cleaning that table not to throw that plate of toppings away since it's been "untouched" & hesitantly the young lady brought it back into the kitchen to give it to the never customer who orders Pho & then came back out to finish bussing her table . However the staff was so friendly & apologetic to the full restaurant and more importantly the food is DELICIOUS and fresh. Ordered the skewered pork vermicelli and added an egg roll. We tried both the orange and sugar cane juice, which were freshly squeezed. The appetizers were Vietnamese style chicken wings and eggrolls. Both were fried to perfection. For our main entree, I got the Bun (vermicelli noodles with meat and fresh veggies) & Com (rice plate). Ended our meal with Café sua da (Vietnamese coffee). Go for the Pho. You'll be back, we will be. So we tried Bao tonight for an early dinner. It was a nice evening and we chose to sit outside in the courtyard. It's private and there is a fountain in the middle. The tables and chairs were basic outdoor patio furniture. Our table rocked, but Alex, the waiter, brought a stack of napkins to put under the leg. The chairs were small. Had either one of us been larger, outside would not have been an option. They've just opened, so I'd like to see some nicer furniture. We ordered several things from the menu. I started with the pork spring rolls, which we both really liked -- very fresh, subtle flavor, nice peanut dip. We will definitely get these again. My guy started with the pho which was the best we've had in ages. We had the combination and it was just fantastic, from the broth to all the meats and we especially liked the tendon. The veggies on the side were all nice and fresh. The only thing we might have added was some cilantro, which we'll ask for next time. The combination bowl only comes in the large size, which can easily feed two. If we had only gotten the pho and the spring rolls, we would have finished it. For $12.00 for the pho and $5.00 for the rolls, this is a bargain. We brought some home. We also tried the barbecue pork banh mi. This was not our favorite. The roll was slightly stale and there wasn't enough filling to taste anything other than bread. Besides a few more slices of pork and a healthier dose of veggies, it needed to be served with a good side of the accompanying sauce, in addition to what had been put on the bread. We suggest you pass even though it's only about $5.00. We ordered the chicken fried rice. It was good, but for our taste, missing something. Bao has a beautiful exterior seating area, and the interior is very stylish. Service was very prompt our entire visit and we were very pleased! We started off with the Vietnamese chicken wings which were hot, fresh, spicy, and sweet. The sauce was a garlic fish sauce, and I dipped my wings in hoisin sauce as well which I think was a good idea, would recommend. Then I had the rare steak pho while my boyfriend had the rare steak/meatball pho. We felt the pho was pretty heavy on the noodles, but the broth was delicious. I do feel the steak was a little chewier than I have had at other viet places in town. Lastly, we got a passion fruit jasmine tea with boba/lychee boba/mixed jelly and it was so good! There were many other interesting drinks and desserts I have never seen before so I would definitely go again to try those. I miss bah mi and was excited to see a vietnamese restraunt open near my place of work. I really enjoyed the bah mi. The bread was crisp but chewy and there was a good balance of flavor involved. I was so pleased I returned the next day for some Pho and a Vietnamese tea. The tea was robust and creamy. I wish the broth for the Pho had a bit more flavor but was overall very please. Service was fast and friendly. The courtyard is large and open but the indoor area feels smaller than it is. It looked like they were still working on getting the bar organized as there was only one beer on tap for the 10 plus taps available. We went there for a late lunch around 2:30pm on tuesday and still there were quite a few tables full of people. I asked for their recommendation before placing an order letting them know what we previously already had from there. The Thai tea with tapioca boba was amazing... it looked so good that i drank a little even before realizing that i didn't take a pic yet.. The chicken wings were pretty good too with both sweet and spicy flavor. My husband got the combo bird nest. It did look like a real nest... The taste was good. My order was vermicelli bowl. All i remember is its #42 on their menu. It came with pork, shrimp and a roll and a lot of cucumbers, sprouts and so on. It has peanuts in there too. The roll was amazing.
