We went there for a late lunch around 2:30pm on tuesday and still there were quite a few tables full of people. I asked for their recommendation before placing an order letting them know what we previously already had from there. The Thai tea with tapioca boba was amazing... it looked so good that i drank a little even before realizing that i didn't take a pic yet.. The chicken wings were pretty good too with both sweet and spicy flavor. My husband got the combo bird nest. It did look like a real nest... The taste was good. My order was vermicelli bowl. All i remember is its #42 on their menu. It came with pork, shrimp and a roll and a lot of cucumbers, sprouts and so on. It has peanuts in there too. The roll was amazing. Only reason for a 4 star is that when ordering a pho and two spring rolls via their website on a Saturday afternoon was told it would be 45m! Seemed a little long and when I called the store was told that "all other orders would come ahead of you". I get that for cooked to order on a busy night but not for pho. My friend and I were excited to dine on Viet food on this side of town. Upon entrance, we were greeted by delightful, soothing Viet music, which I enjoyed. I ordered the pork wonton soup and added egg noodles to it. It was very good, flavorful, and comforting! There was also tender slices of char sui pork in it. The portion was also huge! I was able to eat the other half for dinner and it was still spot on. Only complaint is service. I understand it was busy, but it took a while for the server to check on us after our food was served. I really wanted to like this place. The service staff was very overwhelmed, the protein portions are small, the flavor profiles are lacking and I left unsatisfied after my meal. It's a little hard to believe after the amount of food that I shared with another person. Let's dig in. Incredibly hung over, after my morning shift, I remembered that I saw this place when shopping at the produce Market and my heart started yearning for Vietnamese food. I looked up Bao and poured over the menu. I was excited to see good prices and a decent variety of food that I love. I just couldn't wait to get my hands on spring rolls, Bahn mi, pho, vermicelli and iced coffee! When we stepped into Bao, the hostess was friendly and quick with her greeting. She even asked if we were familiar with Vietnamese food! This is where the wheels come off. After being seated, we noticed that there were two servers on the floor. So the fact that it took close to 20 mins to be greeted was expected and not that big of a deal. However, waiting 10 mins longer for 1 water to be delivered at a time is a little annoying. It's also awkward as hell for two diners to have one glass of water in front of them. Who gets it? After waiting that long you are both parched, but too nice to take it for yourself.. we ended up sharing it until the next water arrived. About 20 mins later, after we ate our apps, our iced coffees arrived. To start, we got grilled pork spring rolls, a pork lemongrass and BBQ pork sandwich. The spring rolls were good and fresh, but the peanut sauce was really basic. It was lacking in flavor. The vegetables on the sandwiches outweighed the protein, although the pistollete was perfect. The meats were good but nothing truly to swoon over. Next time, I will likely just ask for double meat I would gladly pay extra for a proper sandwich. For our entrees, we shared the combination pho and The grilled pork, shrimp and egg roll vermicelli. The best thing on the plates was the grilled pork. Everything else fell a little flat and portions were a bit small as well. I will give this place another shot. I may have to try Ava street cafe first though. read more

I had their bun thit nuong w/ chao tom and it was the biggest disappointment. There was barely any meat and the chao tom had a funny taste to it, like it was going bad. One bite of that and I pushed it to the side. The portion is extremely small so I do suggest getting an appetizer. This place has decent food for a decent price. The dishes are moderately proportioned and are delicious. Unfortunately, I have only had a few of the items on the menu. I have had the pho, the fried rice, the Thai tea, and the banh mi. All of these items are delicious. The pho was hearty and filling. However, the pho also tasted really sweet. The fried rice had the strong aroma and flavors that you get from a wok. The Thai tea was very tasty with its sweet and strong tea flavor. The banh mi was big and tasted delicious. The service is good with short wait times for both the food and for getting a table. However, sometimes the waiter does not come back to check on the table for a long time and it would make it hard to pay or get a refill of water. That and the taste of the food is the only reason that this restaurant did not get five stars from me. The food could be more flavorful in my opinion as I found myself adding additional flavoring to the pho broth which is uncharacteristic of me. read more

I had ordered a fried rice but received Pho. This was just a minor altercation, so I just reminded them that my order was fried rice. However the employee at the desk petulantly insisted: your order is pho. While I understand that these kinds of mixups are possible, it is simply ridiculous that the employee insists that 'my' order 'is' pho. By far the best Pho I've ever had, even compared to larger more diverse cities. I eat here quite often for lunch and the occasional dinner. I normally have the pho containing beef and briscuit , but also enjoy the chicken and seafood selections. May I also recommend the Vietnamese wings as an appetizer! This was our first time eating from here. We had our good delivered and everything is delivered cold. I ordered the wonton soup which had entirely too much vegetables and I had to mix everything together myself. The sweet sausage sandwich tasted like spam and the grilled pork egg rolls or should I say a veggie roll had too many vegetables and cold pork. To each his own but the food is bland to me and way too many vegetables for the price they charge. I probably will not eat here again. Love this place, went when they first opened up and the owner asked us how they were doing, and I spoke honestly to him. I told them "It's really great, the place looks nice, the only thing is the broth was a little lacking in flavor." He said he's still working the kinks out and when we returned at a later time, the broth was much more flavorful. I love their desserts, and their actual pride in the food they're offering. First thing is first, we come to Bao specifically for the wings! After a friend told us how good they were here, we had to come try them out for ourselves and after dining in 3 times, we can confirm they are always amazing. They are crispy, cooked perfectly, and the flavor is just so great--very different than American-style wings. My personal favorite is the tamarind option, but the fish sauce flavor is also great and my husband prefers it. The one thing I do not like from Bao though is their pork and chicken. The grilled pork just has a strange, almost feathery texture and I don't know how best to describe it but it is off-putting to me (I LOVE the grilled pork at Viet Garden so maybe its just my preference.) The grilled chicken I ordered in my vermicelli bowl on our second visit was also not my favorite. It is chicken thigh which I have no problem with at it is juicier and flavorful, but the way they cut it and leave so much fat on it just kind of turns me off. I really wish they offered some lemongrass beef as an option. We have not yet tried their pho but most likely will at our next visit. Service has been fine and efficient at each visit so no complaints there. Try this place out just for their chicken wings alone! read more

This place is quite a hidden gem in Baton Rouge. When you walk in, there is a beautiful courtyard with a huge fountain. On the inside, it is welcoming and stylish. I was immediately impressed with the wait staff, who really go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. I came for lunch at a busy time, and my waitress made me feel like I was the only customer in there. The chicken pho was seriously SO tasty and satisfying. The cilantro, basil and other herbs provided with pho tasted super fresh and the broth was perfect. I have nothing but good things to say, and would recommend Bao to anyone!!! read more

Just got back from lunch at Bao. Started out with the Saigon egg rolls, which were pretty basic, but tasty. Tried both varieties of chicken wings (one coated with lime salt and the other with tamarind and fish sauce); we preferred the tamarind flavor. Also tried two different types of banh mi -- one with grilled lemongrass pork, the other with various cold cuts & pate. Both were very good. I had the pho tai, which I found to be pretty meh, even by Baton Rouge standards. Definitely not on the level of Dang's or Little Saigon or even Viet Garden. The wonton soup was good, and I also enjoyed the taro milk tea. So overall, I was pleased with the food -- but on the other hand, the service was pretty darn bad. Once we were seated, we had to wave someone down, just to GET a server. Then they brought out the pho with no accompaniments, no chopsticks, no spoon. My wife's soup didn't come out until AFTER I was completely finished with mine (and you know how long it takes to finish one of those big-ass bowls). They were busy, because it was cold outside and I guess everyone was coming to get their pho fix, but that's not an excuse, in my opinion. Sorry, but I'll stick to Dang's. read more

Checked out bao today and was very impressed. Tried the Saigon spring rolls, made with rice paper then fried so they have that blistery crunch. These were amazing. Also got rare beef and brisket pho. It was a nice clean broth (though not the most flavorful I've had) and a HUGE amount of noodles and meat in the large bowl. Next time I might get the rare beef on the side as it was all cooked in the broth by the time it came. (I like it rare rare!) So the pho was good, meat was good.. the real star was my mans dish - the bun bo hue. This is a spicy soup with thicker rice noodles and damn does it pack a punch. He had the classic style with pigs feet, blood sausage, the works. Also had stew beef and the Viet cold cut meat in it. The "traditional meats" are optional. This soup was a real winner. Interior is beautiful and service was attentive. So why four stars? The whole experience didn't blow me away. And the food, though delicious, made both of us blow up like balloons afterwards from the salt content. Not to end on a bad note, I ended with Vietnamese coffee. Not Too sweet, creamy delight. I think it's time to end my relationship with Bao. I really wanted it to work but I have to rate it below average. I have had their food multiple times and liked it for the most part. Nothing life changing but yummy none the less. (the fried rice was the one dish I did NOT end up liking so I would suggest not bothering with that dish.) But I have mostly been coming here for their specialty drinks. I loved the Che Ba Mau and their basil seed drink. What I don't love is that nearly every time I order there is something wrong. My boyfriend literally rolls his eyes and sighs when I tell him I am ordering something form here. Nearly every time I ask for no peanuts I have gotten peanuts (and if you look in the reviews below another customer with food sensitivity had an allergic reaction here so it seems to be an issue with their cooks not caring about substitutions). We have had issues with having to wait 15 or more minutes for a single drink order when the place was near empty. And then today my sweet BF picked up my order for me and it looks like they have switched to smaller cups? I can't fathom paying over 6 dollars for a drink this small. Which unfortunately is the last straw for me. I really loved their drinks so I'm sad not to order form here anymore but I just can't justify it. Having come from the Houston food culture, it has been challenging to find good ethnic food. Most of ethnic restaurants want to Cajunize everything. Bao does not fall into that trap. It is a bright airy atmosphere that also offers outdoor seating. Service was great both prompt and friendly. We both ordered vermicelli bowls. Mine was the shrimp, pork and egg roll it was delicious they have a variety of sauces from mild to spicy so you can customize to your taste. DO NOT GO HERE, terrible service and below average food. My girlfriend and I were in Baton Rouge for Christmas and were happy to see a Vietnamese restaurant in town. We came in to see a more modern decor than usual Vietnamese restaurants. My girlfriend and I are both Vietnamese so we have been to plenty of traditional and modern Vietnamese restaurants. Our servers name was Charlotte and she was extremely rude and inattentive towards our table. She seemed in a rush and quick to leave. We ordered the fish sauce chicken wings and the Saigon egg rolls. My girlfriends wings came out ice cold and not even warm. I was extremely upset because my wings were hot. I was confused because if you had two orders of wings how would one be ice cold and one be hot for the same table!!! After telling Charlotte, she had a look of annoyance and disgust on her face like we were bothering her. She took it back and about 5 minutes later, I could tell they just microwaved the wings in the back as they were extremely soggy. We lost our appetite and we were left hungry and annoyed. On top of this Charolette did not even offer to take one order of the wings off the menu until I demanded not to pay for them! DO NOT GO HERE, bad service. Crappy food and no kitchen should have a microwave in the back. P.S. their Vietnamese coffee sucks. Too sweet and the coffee isn't strong enough. Also Charlotte, fix that ugly look on your face. It was great ambiance, I sat at the bar, but it was definitely visuals over substance. I've been to Vietnam, and mom & pop Vietnamese restaurants in Chicago and Saint Louis that are not up to par with this establishment aesthetics wise but are ten times better in taste, authenticity and menu options. Bao served me some of the worst, driest spring rolls I've ever had. The matcha drink was decent, Bun Bo Hue pho (beef, lemon grass, pig foot and pork blood) was good tho, the servers attentive for the most part and it was served hot and quick. But I'm not sure if I would go back. I thought every Vietnamese restaurant at a minimum had great spring rolls and sauces. Maybe I just ordered the wrong items or came in too late. I came in at 7:55 and they close at 9pm. If I had to come back I would order everything differently except the pho. read more

Literally just finished with getting my order via Waitr. I called first to see if they had a menu online but the girl who was very friendly wasn't sure. After searching I found that the prices on the menus are different. I ordered the shrimp spring rolls (bland taste nothing too great, even the peanut sauce was just ok) I ordered the skewered pork and added grilled shrimp (I got 4 small grilled shrimp with no flavor) the grilled pork was super fatty with chunks of tendon, flavor of the little bit of pork I could eat was good but slightly tougher than expected) it's sad but the best part were the pickled carrots and daikon, because I wasn't sure if I was going to like anything, I ordered a bbq pork bahn mi ( well this is my go to at any Vietnamese restaurant, needless to say this was by far the worst looking sandwich, I didn't even take a bite, the pork was so finely sliced and full of fat, again more fat than meat and this random sauce smothered all over it and the hardest bread, that could possibly be used as a weapon.) after almost $40 this was the biggest waste of money. I am amazed this place has the rating it does. I was highly let down. Also keep this in mind, pictures oh Waitr make the food look beautiful and amazing, in reality it looks nothing like the pics.
