Had a great lunch at Bao Ju yesterday with my friend Mary. We were seated immediately and brought menus. They have an extensive lunch selection with very reasonable prices. I chose the shrimp with vegetables and fried rice. With that I was served a small egg roll and got to choose which soup I wanted. I went with the hot and sour soup, which was some of the best I've ever had. The stir fry had a nice variety of veggies with large shrimp which were cooked perfectly. The food was good, don't get me wrong. But what dropped my major opinion on this place is when I was about to leave. I offered no tip because there really service but when we walked in and when they took out order. They'd didn't check up on us or anything like that. When my girlfriend and I were leaving, she looked at the receipt I signed and said, "oh you need to put tip. 18,19,20 dollars". And that was a major major no. I was not going to give a 98% tip. I crossed off the Total and the tip and added $5.00 more to the total to make the "waitress" happy. Not recommended and won't be back. read more

I've been going here for the past few years and this is my favorite place in the Fox Valley to get Chinese food. The staff is friendly and the food is reasonably priced. Some of my favorites are the curry chicken and tangy spicy chicken. If you prefer a vegetarian option the mao po bean curd (which has tofu) is a good choice. read more

We started the Bao Ju experience by calling the restaurant and asking if they delivered, they said "no, only for lunch, sorry," and then hung up on me. I called back stating that I still wanted to place an order and the guy said, "okay, what do you want?" however, rather rudely. Looking back on it, I should have gone somewhere else right there. I ordered cashew chicken, General Tso's chicken, but I wanted to substitute the white with fried rice. This seems like an impossible task here as they can't do so, and the only way to get it was to order a separate side of fried rice. Fine, will do. So I went and picked it up, and the total was $34.20 for my order... $34.20!! THIRTY FOUR DOLLARS AND TWENTY CENTS!!! I talked with my girlfriend about the total in the car and we agreed it seemed expensive, so I went back and asked why the high price. My cashew chicken was $13.25, General Tso's chicken was $10.25, and the "side" of fried rice was $8.75. Funny thing is, there was only one container of white rice in the bag. I thought we couldn't substitute white with fried? If that's the case, give me my other container of white rice! All of this and I haven't eaten anything yet. So we get the food home, and we start plating our food, and my girlfriend's chicken was huge pieces of chicken instead of the usual smaller pieces. They literally took two breasts, slathered them in sauce, and said there you go. The fried rice had shrimp in it that tasted like a freezer, and the rice was dry. My cashew chicken was the best out of all of our food and it tasted like metal. The bottom line for me is that I could go somewhere else and pay $5-10 less and feel just as awful after eating Chinese food, but at least I'd enjoy the ride and get some satisfaction out of it. The combination of the rude man (owner probably), the not so good food, and the $34.00 bill will have me looking anywhere but this place. I hate writing negative reviews, but the last few Fox Valley restaurants have been absolute busts. read more

Oh man when I went here, I was expecting the usual service, as in terrible customer service and not getting what I payed for, but this place was the opposite. I got way more food then what I was expecting and the quality was very nice. Also their deserts are so good and probably one of my favorite things there. I had some Chinese friends tell me that they would drive from Oshkosh to eat here, so I knew I had to check it out. It is now one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. My favorite dish is not on the menu, but it is a noodle dish called Zha Jiang Mian. (if you can't say it, just show them this 炸酱面) I live in Appleton, but I eat at Bao Ju a few times each month. read more

I love this place for many reasons but my main reason is the qaulity of the food. This is one of only a few places that serve Chow Gia Ku and it is phenominal. I have been looking for this chef since he left Chef Chew's in Appleton. The food us great, The service is perfect, and the crowds aren't too large. This is the Best Chinese in the area. read more

I worked close to this location for years. I had many wonderful lunches here. Two weeks ago I ordered take out. It was absolutely awful! The chicken was dry and tough. It was $60 for four entrees and s soup, they forgot the soup. I could name so much more. I'm not a second chance kind of guy. One mistake is understandable but an entire meal being a flop! read more

This is one of the nicest places in Neenah. Lunch plates are about $6 and dinner is reasonable ($10 - 15) and everything is sooo good. Family favorites are the hunan chicken and sweet and sour anything. The service is great as well. We eat here a few times a month and it is always wonderful. read more

We have been there a few times. The food was OK and reasonably priced. The last time we were there, my daughter ordered some sort of breaded chicken and several of the pieces came connected by human hair! We showed it to the manager, no apology, only..."I be right back". I believe she removed the hair and reserved the food. No discount, no free meal...NO RETURN! read more

After hearing many friends rave about Bao Ju about a month ago decided to try it. I drove into their parking lot and the door to the kitchen was propped open. I saw 2 brown mice running next to the brick wall toward the kitchen door. Leaving my car, I ran to the door, shouted for help and tried to close the door before the mice got inside. A man came out and took the wood piece propping the door open and smacked the mice, killing them just outside the kitchen door. Several other men came outside and looked at the situation trying to find any other mice. I could not understand what they were the language they were speaking but they did not appear overly concerned. I was horrified by the entire situation. After trying to discuss it with someone inside the restaurant and failing, I left. After much soul searching I contacted the Health Dept. as I did not want any one to become ill. Hantavirus is possible from mice droppings. I am unsure of the any results from the Health Dept but will NOT patronize this restaurant. In fact, I have curtailed eating out since this episode. read more

Dropped in on the recommendation of a friend. It was a Tuesday evening but the restaurant was not crowded. We were promptly seated, our drink order taken, and a few minutes later, we placed our order. I ordered Sweet & Sour Shrimp, the others ordered Almond Chicken and Sesame Chicken. A few minutes later the server brought out the soup course and the appetizer. The soups were very tasty and we were anticipating the main course. And we anticipated, and anticipated, and anticipated. We began to wonder if perhaps the cooks were seining the gulf for the shrimp. It took almost 45 minutes to get our meals. While the food was exceptional, we felt that the wait was excessive given that there were only 4 tables occupied thus garnering the 4 star rating. Outside of the Valley, this would not be a 5-star restaurant. It would be a 3.5-4 star in a larger city. But this is easily, without question, the best Chinese restaurant in the Fox Valley. Their Hunan dishes are flavorful and done well. Their orange beef is fantastic. If you like saucy steak, their Rainbow Steak is excellent. It's the typical Americanized, "Shanghai" style Chinese food, but in this genre it's the best. Chinese food I've had north of Milwaukee. It's small and quaint in terms of decor, and the service is merely adequate. But the menu is great. read more

I went in for a late lunch, after having read all the glowing 4 and 5 star reviews. I was greeted by the owner, given a nice, if somewhat crowded seat next to the window. On reviewing the lunch menu, all but one entree had meat or seafood. The vegetable entree was "Farmer's Market", an assortment of vegetables in a "white sauce". Accompanying this was an egg roll containing meat. I asked the waitress if I could substitute "vegetable soup" ($1.50) for the egg roll (if ordered separately, $1), since I prefer not to eat meat. "No, no substitutions". I asked to speak to the owner. "No." I then walked over to the owner, explained I prefer not to eat meat, can we substitute the soup? "No." It was suggested there were three other soups I could substitute (???what about "no substitutions"???), but all of these were meat based. I left, given I do not see the customer or dietary restrictions being honored or valued here. I was able to find a very vegan-friendly and vegetarian-friendly Asian restaurant just a few blocks away. read more

Have gotten takeout several times over the past few month and have been impressed every time. So happy they aren't serving the typical asian restaurant buffet style food. The quality is solid and will continue to come here. I have no problem paying the extra couple bucks for a better quality meal. Also the portions are big! read more

The best Chinese food in the Valley, hands down. The honey garlic chicken in one of the top three dishes I have ever had at a Chinese restaurant. If you are in Appleton, Neenah or Oshkosh, this would be the Chinese restaurant I would recommend. Casual atmosphere and they do take away. read more

This was one of my favorite family restaurants until this evening. Myself and three other people came to Bao Ju for a casual dinner. After we had our soup and appetizers, I simply told our server I was not pleased with the assorted appetizer. Due to it being over cooked. This server than said she would speak to her manager. (Okay sweet) serves us our entreés, and then brings us our bill. First off she didn't split it up separately, so we had to ask her who owed exactly what. We paid our bill and this woman came to us very angry and demanded more of a tip, explained she deserved it because she poured us water once, and has worked there for 16 years (lol why did I need to know that? Who knows.) I then responded with, "tonight I explained why I didn't enjoy the app and you told me it was MY fault for trying something new on the menu" ridiculous. BUT WAIT THERES MORE. This woman keeps demanding a higher tip from us, we stood up to leave, she tried to block the doorway, followed us outside, AND THEN SAID I WAS TOO FAT TO TIP RIGHT I turned around and asked her what she just said and THIS WOMAN SPIT ON ME! Stated she was going to call the police for literally not giving her a higher tip. And tried o take pictures of MY CAR. I am so shocked and quite frankly flabbergasted in this unbelievable service. You'd think a woman who's served for 16 years, would understand people tip the server based on the service given as well as the price. read more
