This was some insanely good food. We got beef and fish and both were perfect, but the fish is what I'll be dreaming of tonight. It had this oniony mustardy sauce and I loved it! The peas and spinach were also so so good. We got tamu (avocado and passionfruit pudding) for dessert and that was probably the best part. Someone wrote a review of it on the baobab fare website that was emphatic, highly descriptive, and maybe somewhat blasphemous in its support of this particular dish lol and I fuuully understand exactly how they feel. It is a perfect food. The flavors and textures just come together in perfect harmony... as much as I love avocados I was a little skeptical and semi-expecting a avocado baby food kind of vibe, but no. Stopped in here for a free dessert for a Yelp event - I won't let that color my review here. Definitely unique, though it wasn't entirely up my alley. I also ordered a main and a few sides to bring home with me and was really impressed. I grabbed the Nyumbani, which is a delicious tender beef in a tomato-based sauce - really incredible. The rice pilau was so good, and then the peanut-stewed spinach was delish as well. Not a huge fan of the plantains - they were huge and tasted a bit bland and starchy, but maybe smaller pieces would help this. My only real complaint was that I ordered a few sides - coconut rice, stewed yellow beans, corn salad, and some more peanut spinach. Unfortunately the coconut rice didn't make it into the bag, though after an email they quickly refunded the cost. All of the other sides were great though, and I'll surely be back. I live about 2 hours from Detroit, but had an appointment in the city so finally had an opportunity to try this restaurant that I've been following since before they opened. It was worth the wait. Usually when I write or read a restaurant review I only focus on the food. But I have to commend the folks who operate this restaurant for managing to master a trifecta of experiential elements that struck me even before we ordered. From the tasteful, creative decor, to the warmth of the welcoming and attentive servers, and the buzz and good energy of happy diners who filled the space when we arrived, all had us excited about the food we were about to enjoy. Everything we ordered was delicious, fresh and flavorful. I had the kumuhana, a marinated "grill-roasted" chicken dish with sides, and my daughters had the nyumbani, a slow simmered beef with sides and the kuku, a pan fried chicken dish with sides. Mine didn't come with the peanut stewed spinach so I ordered that as an extra side along with fried plantains, corn salsa, beans and two types of rice, coconut and spiced. All of it was so good. I love the portion sizes and how each entree is served in a bowl on top of the rice. We arrived hungry so we still had room for dessert. We all ordered the coco mango, a cup of fresh mango chunks with mango coulis over coconut cream and topped with slightly roasted shredded coconut. It was divine and so pretty. The food was great. We enjoyed ourselves. Paid our bill and left. I started thinking the bill was higher than it should be. We paid the wrong bill. We went back to the restaurant (not an easy task in Detroit.) The person at the register found our bill, reran my charge card and said she'd put through a credit for the first charge. That was 12/29. Our charge card bill came and I noticed 2 charges but no credit. I called the restaurant. I spoke to someone who sounded as if they were the owner. She apologized. She took all of the information. I called again a week later and left a message. A week later I entered a dispute with my charge card company. They have yet to respond to the inquiry. I have the Toasttab text messages containing both bills. We were not a party of 5. We were a party of 2. If you go, enjoy your food - but be very sure to check your receipt carefully. read more

Okay this was my second time and second review at this place. This review is much better. My experience was much better and what I ordered I really enjoyed this time. Everyone's dish was very tasty and we got great customer service as well. It's a nice little cozy spot this easy to get in and out. Now I will go again, because this time around I enjoyed myself much better. Last time I had a chicken dish wish I was not impressed with. This time I got the beef dish which was very my daughter got the goat shank and she really liked it it was season really well. It tasted pretty good, but that's not something I will order it still tasted a little gamey to me. And my friend got the eggplant stew which was really good too. Got takeout and it was so flavorful and delicious! It was my first time trying East African food and I'm very grateful for the chance! We got the KuKu and the Samaki and both was amazing! The Samaki in particular (fish) blew me away. We did get takeout on one of their first weeks of being open so it was a bit disorganized and slow trying to get our takeout but hopefully that will improve as they settle in. I've been waiting for this restaurant to open for ages, I'm so excited the day has finally arrived! Grabbed two takeout dishes to share with my mom; the fish (samaki) and beef (nyumbani). Both were delicious! I'm not the biggest fish person but I would eat this fish for every meal, especially with the onions on top! The beef was flavorful and tender and came with some great spinach. Seriously, I've never liked spinach before, so that's saying a lot! I'm excited to come back and try some more dishes! read more

Great place! I've been here twice and both times have been enjoyable. Even if it's busy the servers are nice and will make sure to take good care of you. I had the Nyumbani which is slow cooked chicken in a tomato paste - yum! Comes with coconut rice or pilaf and plantain. And this came with a spinach/peanut combo - which wasn't my favorite but it doesn't take a way from the dish overall. Also, try the sauce that comes with adds a nice kick but not too powerful. This place was sooooo delicious! I was in Detroit from out of town and was recommended this place by the dance studio I was visiting. We placed a carry out order and it was prepared accurately which as many of us know...doesn't happen all the time. I ordered the Nyumbani which as stated on their menu means "home" and it certainly felt like that. The meat was so tender, the flavors of the sauce were marinated to perfection and the combination of coconut rice and sweet plantains balanced my desire for savory and sweet flavors. I hate to be a me-too-er, and I've only been the one time, but I do have to chime in with everyone else and say just how impressive this place was to me. I really enjoyed everything about my lunch experience here (just wish that the full menu was available at lunchtime...I guess that means I have to go back to have the goat!), and the way they've made such an industrial building into a homey, inviting place was truly impressive. First off the feeling of this place when you walk in is amazing! Such a vibe with the bright decor, the plants and the warm and friendly people who greet you. This was my first time at Baobab Fare and I'm sure it won't be my last! The menu is simple with some meat dishes and some vegetarian options, yummy sounding drinks and a couple desserts. I heard about this little gem from influencers from Detroit and have wanted to come since last March (my birthday). Last night my bff and I went to a show at the Masonic Temple and I told her this is where I wanted to eat dinner. I honestly think she was skeptical and hesitant but from what I knew and heard about the food, I knew she would love it. We sat down early for dinner, just before 5pm. The place was decently busy and so glad we didn't have to wait (remember we had a show) our server was very nice and when asked her opinion on the two chicken dishes offered she immediately got excited because the Kuku is her absolute favorite thing on the menu. We both ordered the same thing and she assured us we wouldn't be disappointed. Kuku is a pan fried chicken breast with a tangy mustard and onion sauce served with stewed yellow beans, plantains and a choice between a spicy rice and coconut rice. We both chose the coconut rice. Not gonna lie I am not the biggest fan of chicken breast but I trusted the other reviews and what I heard. Food came out fairly quickly and the presentation was very comforting. A large shallow bowl filled with food touching each other and I was delighted. When I went in the get some of the chicken, it practically fell apart. It was so tenter and juicy and FULL of flavor, mouth full bursting with joy. Sometimes chicken can get so tender that it almost tastes like someone already chewed it, not this. I was amazed at the perfect cook. The rice was fluffy and was so good with that sauce drenched. The plantains were out of this world, slightly sweet, slightly crunchy and let's not forget the beans. Not sure if I've ever had yellow beans and I'm glad to say that now I have. These beans were so good had a slight sweetness almost reminiscent of a baked bean but I think I prefer these. When you got a mouth full of chicken, rice, beans and plantain...heaven. I can't say enough good things about the atmosphere, service and food. Wow so delicious! My date introduced me to East African cuisine. Since it was a Wednesday, I had to try their Wednesday-only dish - Mhogo. It had Yucca which is similar in the texture of a potato but more calorie dense. It had shredded chicken in a tangy mustard-onion suace. I chose the yellow beans over the peanut-stewed spnach. Such a delicious meal! The mustard-onion sauce was not an uncomfortable tangy. All the flavors are nicely balanced and it was a very delicious meal. I knew I was in for a treat when I walked in and was greeted with Ni Tikenye and other fresh afrobeats were playing over the sound system. The interior is slick with a nice balance between black industrial vibes, bright yellow wooden seating and black and white mosaic style flooring. My hibiscus tea was very nice, a bit sweet, a bit tangy with hibiscus and some other spices making for a nice treat. I'm a vegetarian so ordered the Intore which is a flavorful eggplant stew with coconut rice, a creamy peanut spinach side, and fried plantain. It was all amazing. Like amazing. Baobab Fare is probably my favorite food spot in Detroit. It serves East African cuisine and has a ton of unique flavor profiles and options. I'm pretty sure I've tried every single entrée on the menu, which isn't characteristic of me, but that's how much I trust this restaurant. The food always tastes like it's a home cooked meal and the flavors are absolutely delectable. I especially love the nyumbani and the kuku. Even the sides they give are incredible, such as the spinach, lentils, and plantains. I actually didn't even like plantains until I had them here. The restaurants is also halal, which I love to see. This is the spot I take anyone new to Detroit, so I highly HIGHLY recommend stopping by. In terms of the actual venue, they have a good amount of seating, but it definitely gets busier around dinner time so I would recommend calling ahead to check. I've always been seated immediately when I've gone for lunch, but have had some ~20 minute waits going for dinner when I didn't call ahead. read more

This review is overdue. I went there for my birthday in August. But I got to tell you it's some of the best food I've had in a long, long time. Even their hot sauce is wonderful. I was told that the owners mother makes it. I don't know if that's true, but it sure is good. I wanted to meet the owner and shake his hand but he wasn't available. I am going back this week for more great food. Parking is not the best since you have to park on the street but once you get past the parking it's a delightful experience.
