Today we just grabbed a snack from here while watching the Cariwest parade. i had to get the soup dumplings as per usual, and this time we tried the Sichuan Spicy Potatoes. So this won't be really a full review. I must say that because I find the restaurant so uncomfortable to sit in, I really enjoyed my snack in the sun outside. Service was slow, however I think it was much more busy than what they are use to on a Saturday at lunchtime. Food was delicous as usual. The soup dumplings had a lovely flavour. I love how the wrapper has a great seal so you can slurp the soup out. It is messy (especially in a lawn chair ) but so worth it. The potatoes were well cooked and had a spicy flavour. I drove all the way from Calgary to have their Sheng Jiag Bao. Well...not really but when I arrived in Edmonton that was the first place we stopped at for lunch. Calgary doesn't not sell this time of Bao that is popular in Shanghai. After moving from Toronto that sold these I was craving them and was happy to get my fill in Edmonton. We also ordered their chili won tons which were sooooo good and their Chicken Sui Mai. So far, everything we tried was delicious! I wanted to come back the next day but my husband wanted to try other food in the city. Therefore, we will be back next time. Nothing like a good review to break the ice Hey? I mean, who knew that all it took was soup coming out of buns to get me out of hiding. As far as my comeback goes, Who knew that all Edmonton needed was a new addition to bring back the love of classic Shanghai street dishes. As an Edmontonian, we all know there is nothing like reverting to a nice and steamy hot bowl of -insert comfort food- , amiright? Well, for me that's anything soup. More specifically pork bone soup. Pork broth just has an impressive way of tasting rich and comforting without being too heavy, with the added flavors of the Asian Classics - Chinese pork broth is all sorts of home for me. So, as soon as we saw the storefront pop up, I wasted no time to stalk until opening. Bao Bao sits right on Jasper Ave, sharing the split level building with some of my other favorites, I was beyond my wits as we walked up for dinner. Interior hasn't changed very much from the former Watari. Menu is not very extensive but comes with a lot of variety. Traditional Pan Fried Bao - $5.99 - Flavor bomb to the MAX. The outer layer is the perfect balance of crispy and soft, having an amazing golden colored crust. As soon as you take a bite, hot steamy broth comes out each one of these babies. Not only were they a great portion size, each one had a consistent amount of broth and filling. Definitely recommend this dish! Pork Soup Dumpling - $8.99 - The classic soup and ground meat mix blanketed together in a thin dumpling skin, steamed and served immediately: Results, 2 bite wonders! 2 bites, because we all know you've learned the lesson of trying to one bite soup dumplings. Overall BaoBao does it pretty well, Each dumpling was consistent with the amount of soup and filling, tasty but nothing memorable. Spring Scallion Mixed Dry Noodles - $7.69 - As terrible as this sounds, this reminds me of the adult grown up version of MeGoreng, the pungent aroma of garlic immediately hits you as the dish arrivies. Nothing but the perfect balance of soy and spring onion oil mixed, this was hearty but so very addictive. Service was fast, and prompt. Everything is cooked fresh in the kitchen, the steaming, the pan frying, all of it. So be mindful that you're going to be waiting for the soupy goodness to get from kitchen to tummy. Really enjoyed each dish and would recommend coming and getting the Pan Fried Baos for sure! Heard good things about BaoBao so met a friend for lunch here. Since I heard there's not a lot of seating inside, I called to see if they would take a reservation and they happily did. We also came early in case it would be busy and we would be waiting. At 11:30AM there was just one person in the restaurant eating and one there to order take out. I was seated promptly at a table for 4. There were a few tables for 2 but I appreciated she seated us at the larger table. While I waited for my friend, the server came to ask if I wanted a drink and I asked for hot water. Instead of a mug or teacup, she bought it in a glass which was a bit hot to hold. My friend arrived and the server told us they don't have the Xiaolong soup dumplings until after 2PM so we were a bit disappointed but we found other items we wanted to try. We shared the traditional pan friend baos (4 for $5.99) and cucumber salad ($4.29) with sauce on the side was it's spicy and I wasn't sure if I could handle the heat. We each ordered a bao, mine was the classic with braised pork ($6.99) and my friend got the fried tofu bao ($5.99). The cucumber salad arrived quickly and I dipped it in the sauce and my friend poured it on top of hers. That worked as I got the flavour without it being too spicy for me to eat. The individual baos arrived next. I wasn't sure if mine would be fatty but I found it wasn't and flavourful. The bao was fresh and fluffy. Next they bought sauces for our pan fried baos and when they brought them to the table, they told us to be careful with the hot soup inside. After dipping it in sauce, I bit into mine and some of the liquid came flying out! Oops, the following bites I was more cautious to not spray the food all over. Both of us enjoyed the pan fried ones and they were my favourite of the food we had. Our bill was around $23 which was very reasonable. I was impressed with the attentive service to bring our food, refill our water, and the speed of the food. I'll definitely return after 2PM to try the Xiaolong dumplings! read more

There's not many places in Edmonton that serve Xialongbao Soup Dumplings so I was very excited to try this place when I heard about it. If you haven't tried soup dumplings before, you're definitely missing out! It's a normal dumpling but there's soup inside when you bite in it. This place is not too big and has around 11-16 tables. It was fairly busy when I came at 6pm on a Saturday night. Service was friendly and welcoming. We ordered: -Pork Soup Dumplings $8.99 (6 pieces): lots of soup and full of flavour. They make the dumplings in house so we had to wait 20 minutes before they were ready -Panfried Bao $5.99 (4 pieces): it has soup like a normal soup dumpling except that it's fried. Super tasty as well. -Icecream Fried Bao $4.79: I was blown away by this dessert! It was amazing. It was a deep fried bun with condensed milk with icecream. Such a goood combination! Overall food here was delicious. My only concern is that it's a bit pricey for what you get. I feel like it would be cheaper in bigger cities but unfortunately this is Edmonton pricing. Note that I mentioned this to them and they said that the reason is because they make all their meat stuffing , soup and dumplings out of scratch. The soup takes 6hrs to make. read more

This place was a wonderful surprise! I was craving Asian food more specifically noodles! It's 30C here in Edmonton so def did not want my usual pho or soup noodles! Found this place on Yelp not too far from where I'm staying, and decided to give this a try! When I had seen it popup on Yelp on my previous trips in town I had thought this was one of those Asian fusion places but nope, it was legit full on OG XLB along with Panfried soup dumplings also! There was a lady handwrapping the little soup dumplings! I have never been so pleasantly surprised! As there is nothing I love more than good old Shanghainese soup dumplings! I got the Pan Fried Baos (Shen Jian Bao) $6.99 for 4pcs (coming from Toronto these are a little bit pricier than back home buttttt the lady wraps them right there, so def very legit!) as well as fried Spring Scallion Dry Noodles It was do fragrant. If I sat down and dined in I would have had ordered more! I got it to go as the there was limited tables and there was a lineup for a table, so I grabbed it to go and sat outside to enjoy my oh so delicious dumplings and noodles in the sunshine! I discovered this downtown dumpling place due to Downtown Dining Week and wow, I had no idea what to expect but I am a complete fan. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. Their specialty is the soup-filled dumplings that are exactly what they sound like: little dumplings filled with a bit of meat and a burst of delicious warm pork broth. The regular pork soup dumplings are smaller and easy to pop in your mouth, but the pan-fried pork or shrimp and pork dumplings are larger so it's a bit more challenging to figure out how to eat these without getting soup all over you! (Maybe those of you with bigger mouths can eat them in one, but I sure can't.) In terms of flavour I personally prefer the pork and shrimp, because I'm a big shrimp fan, but they're all delicious. In addition to their soup dumplings, they do the sandwich style bao buns: a sweet steamed bun filled with fried chicken, or fried tofu, or pork - all these are delicious also, but probably similar bao can be obtained in other places in Edmonton (such as 99St Kanto) whereas as far as I know, the soup dumplings are a specialty that only BaoBao makes like this. Their spicy wontons were pretty delicious too. Basically, I've been going here at least once a week since discovering it ... so if you haven't tried this place out yet, please do! One caution: due to popularity, their soup dumplings do sell out. So, safer to stop by for lunch if you absolutely must try them, or call to check in advance. read more

My colleague and I had originally planned to go to Fu's Repair Shop, but found on arrival that it is not open for lunch. However, this was in no way a loss, since I walked a few steps west to see that BaoBao had a free table. What followed was delicious and satisfying, a perfect lunch! And I will definitely return. The server brings water and cups to the table as a matter of course, which was great to see. We ordered some of the more traditional soup dumplings as well as some specialty egg ones, and some deep fried mushrooms. This turned out to be a great lunch for two. I would highly recommend the dumplings -- from my experience there is not likely to be a poor dumpling in the lot, since all of ours were fantastic with rich flavours and smooth textures. My colleague had been there once before and said she had a very similar experience then. We lingered over green tea and coffee at the end of the meal, and service remained attentive and friendly as we settled the bill. We went to the back of the restaurant where the food prep was taking place to pay, and everything is clean and visible, with a posse of people making dumplings and cooking them to perfection. Last note: the server cautioned us to take care with the internal contents of the dumplings, in particular the soup ones, as they may be quite hot upon serving. We started out with small bites from the bottom and focused mostly on the fried mushrooms at first, and upon being certain that the dumplings' contents were not lava hot but just-right hot, devoured from there. This place could have sent my husband to the hospital!!!! Be careful if you have severe allergies to food, because they won't take it seriously! My husband gets an anaphylactic reaction to ingesting peanuts. After going through the menu with the waitress and confirming our order would not have peanuts, we got our food. The food was quite tasty so we gobbled it all down. After finishing the dish, the waitress came over and told us that she needed to take the dish back to the kitchen because it was made with peanuts! We were incredibly upset and scared of the reaction he would get from eating something that the staff knew we were allergic to. It just so happens my husband had started a strong immunosuppressive medication, so he didn't get a reaction like we thought he would. He ended up being okay, but that could have been a very different story if circumstances were slightly different.. I can not recommend any restaurant that doesn't take allergies seriously! read more

I love dumplings! I could eat them every day. So, as soon as I heard about this place popping up on Jasper, I knew I had to go. I visited Bao Bao first for dinner, and the second time for lunch. Lunch service was very fast and efficient, doable on my break! In addition to their pan fried shrimp dumplings, I also enjoyed a simple but flavourful wonton soup, a crispy chicken bao sandwich, and a fresh cucumber salad. I've visited twice so far, and I've tried a total of four fishes. All were piping hot, freshly made and delicious. You can actually watch the dumplings being made! I found the prices extremely reasonable! My only request is a steamed shrimp and coriander dumpling! :) Very happy to have this amazing new Bao and dumpling restaurant downtown! read more

So glad to have a place downtown that serves Xiao long bao! BaoBao is right in the middle of Jasper Ave, less a 2 min walk away from the Corona LRT station. Their menu is pretty simple and fits on one page which I truly appreciate because choosing what to eat from large menus is hard! We ordered the traditional pan fried baos to share, along with the classic bao and the sweet and sour pork ribs dry noodles. Everything was really delicious, but my favourite were definitely the pan fried baos! They were a perfect combo of crispy fried exterior with a soupy chewy filling. The dry noodles were quite delicious too and very well seasoned. I am a huge fan of the sesame chilli oil that they serve. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because it is a little pricey for me, but it's not a deal breaker. I look forward to going back here to try the Xiao long bao! YEG EATS ~ had to check out this restaurant they were so busy with loads of different take out orders and they were swamped. * Traditional pan fried pork buns ($6.99) ~ eh they were ok. It was juicy but the skin was too thick. I did like the crispy bottom and soft chewy top. The pork was good but I wish it was more flavoured as the soup was lacking a bit of seasoning. 6/10. * Sweet & sour ribs ($6.99) ~ not bad but a bit too sweet for me. The meat was good and wasn't too tough on the bone. It was flavourful. 5.5/10. * Classic guabao ($6.99) ~ eh. This was different the meat was juicy and Tender but it tasted so different from the other ones I've had. I think it was a bit too salty for my liking. 5/10. * Pork soup dumpling ($8.99) ~ this was ok la the skin was thicker than I liked and it wasn't too flavourful I wish it was more juicy and seasoned. 6/10. * Green onion dry noodle ($7.69) ~ portion was small, the noodles were nice and chewy but super salty. 4/10. * Overall it wasn't too bad but definitely overhyped compared to many places I've tried already. read more

Love it. This place takes me back to the motherland, when I used to rush into a dumpling shop for some lunch. Soup dumplings skin is thin, and the hot soup inside explodes in your mouth and tastes amazing. I obviously recommend the soup and pan-fried dumplings, specifically the pork/crab/shrimp ones because they're the most traditional. I'm sure the other ones are good, but they're probably in-store creations. The noodles were good too, but you're coming for the dumplings. Repeatedly, I have ordered take out of tofu bao. Repeatedly, I have said only teriyaki, no other sauce. Repeatedly, they confirmed this. Repeatedly, they have put on a cream based sauce that is not identified on their menu, nor when I discuss my order with them. I literally stood there, yet again today, reiterating, how my order needed to be. They actually discussed with their "boss" who confirmed that only teriyaki goes on this sandwich. I pay for the the finished order, happy that they have clearly understood and accepted my order this time. Afterall, we just spoke about this, AT LENGTH. I get home. I unpack my order, ready to dig in. And yet AGAIN, they put this creamy sauce on it. And again, into the garbage my lunch goes. I am done. DONE. Fun varieties of bao. Good pan fried ones and the spicy wontons were great and not super spicy. It's tough to judge soup dumplings on takeout as you can't get they really hot. I'd recommend resteaming them at home or if you don't have a steamer pouring some hot water from a kettle in the container to warm them up for a minute for before eating to help get the xiaolong bao hot. Other options like noodle soup and mushroom appetizers were not bad but you should really be here for the bao and that's what they do best. read more

Ok. This was not actually on my hit list for downtown dining week, but fortunately the place I was planning to go to wasn't open for lunch as advertised. I guess the stars aligned that day and I came in on a whim since Baobao is next door to farrow sandwiches and I was looking for lunch for myself. They have a great selection for downtown dining week and all options have at least one popular item from their menu. I don't like spicy heat so the 3rd option is what I went with. They have limited seating for takeout waiting, so they do take your phone number to call you when pickup is ready. I think the food is made to order, which takes a long time, so I highly recommend calling in advance to place an order... it was about 45 minutes before I got my order. I have no regrets waiting after trying their food. There is a lot of food for what I paid for, I feel like I made out like a bandit! The soup dumplings are definitely worth trying, I'd come back if they reopen to dine in just to try fresh & hot soup dumplings, or re-steam my takeout for the flavour burst of warm soup with the first bite like how they are meant to be. The dry noodles don't look like anything fancy, but the crispy onions they give you to add on is what makes that dish great. There's also limited street parking in the front or around the area. Excellent takeout! We weren't certain how the soup dumplings would hold up but they were perfect when we got them home. The soup dumplings were full of flavourful broth, the perfect size for one bite. The pan fried bao are larger and maybe a little messier to eat, but really delicious and packed full of meat and broth. The frying gives them a crispy bottom which adds some nice texture. The shrimp version had a whole shrimp tucked inside, along with some pork mixture. My surprise favourite was the spring scallion dry noodles, they looked like plain noodles but turned out to be full of flavour and savory seasoning. I will definitely order these every time I go back. And finally the bao - also great! The crunchy chicken perfectly fried and was crunchy as promised. I'm going to start off with the atmosphere and cleanness. There's hardly any seating in here. It's very uncomfortable with what is available. The floor hadn't been mopped in days. It's been -25 for the past week. There's no way the floor got that filthy in one day. The ladies bathroom had no soap. Garbage was overflowing. There was only one server working. So it took quite awhile to put a order in. Didn't take them long to make the food. I've never had bao buns so I have nothing to compare it to. I had the pork and chicken. I did not like the pork. The meat was chewy and had no flavour. The chicken was good. Had some heat. Reminded me of a Popeyes sandwich. I wanted to take the rest home but the server took forever. Then they decided to sit down and eat. Lol. I was dumbfounded. Every table had people and she was taking a break. I get it, you need to take a break but we were done and wanted to pay and she's eating. We just stared at her along with everyone else. So I got up to walk out and she came over with my bill. This is my go-to for soup dumplings. Very reasonable pricing, amazing sauces, amazing service. My brother ordered the classic bao and he said it was the best thing he's ever tasted. We also ordered spicy and regular pork soup dumplings and shrimp-pork pan fried bao. They were perfect. So much flavour and really hit the spot on a cold rainy day! What a refreshing sight to see a new Bao place in Edmonton - it's rare that a store focuses on Baos as it's quite a specific niche in Asian cuisine. Having spent many years in Shanghai and being an absolute fan of good baos, I had high hopes of BaoBao. Someone once said that one should not have high expectations because they will most certainly be disappointed. I hate whoever said that, but we all know that it's very true. And it's a shame that BaoBao was no exception. Presentation of the XLB was excellent, along with shape and thickness of the XLB skin. However, the most important part of a Bao has got to be the filling, and the flavour was just off. It didn't taste authentic at all. The best dish in terms of authenticity was the Shao mai, they actually did an excellent job with showcasing a unique blend of mushroom and pork with sticky rice. Overall, everything was a bit overpriced, but it's tough for a dt location not to overcharge. Would recommend a try but would not return. Sadly now still on the lookout for an authentic Asian restaurant that makes good baos. read more

So I lived in Shanghai, for ten years and most of my adult life (originally from BC). The sheng jian bao 生煎包 at this place are at least on par with some of the best I've had in Shanghai, if not better. This is a gem and I'm jealous that my newly adopted home of Calgary doesn't have a location. I'd literally go here every week if I lived in Edmonton. That's how good they were. Go now!
