Visiting town with my wife and in laws and was excited to go here. Myself and my in laws really enjoy whiskey and tequila, so we were excited initially to see the large selection. My wife prefers to only drink vodka. We asked if they had vodka and they confirmed they do, but they told us they would refuse to make a vodka cocktail. If you love gin and whiskey and like dark/intimate vibes, this place is for you. Massively extensive drink menu. If it has been thought of for gin or whiskey, it is likely listed. Service was decent considering the massive amount of people there. I, being a short individual, did allow the husbands in our group to order the drinks since they are taller and less likely to be overlooked. The bathrooms are clean and well stocked. The while place has a speakeasy vibe, which is what they were going for. The entrance is downstairs and the bar is in a basement like area. There are a few couches but mostly small tables. This is a great bar! Their selection is expansive and the staff are amazing. The cocktails were delicious and the bartenders were great at helping you out if you weren't sure exactly what you wanted. The pretzel was amazing, it was very soft with the proper chew and the mustards were great! When I think of a bar, this is what I think of. It was busy for a Tuesday night, but there were plenty of seating available (indoors and outdoors). There is also plenty of parking around the arts complex, but you may walk a little more to find the entrance to the bar but that's part of the fun! read more

Situated beneath another bustling business, 1919 is reminiscent of a 1920's Speakeasy or Blind Pig location. There's no peep hole that will open, no password needed, and no jacket required. Just an unmarked door between you and libation heaven. Once you cross the threshold, you will find a long bar counter top and several wall counters that are all first come first serve. However, visitor be warned, this place can become very busy. A well placed reservation is highly recommended to secure one of the tabled sofa seating areas. There is a decent amount of standing room, however, who wants to hold their drink while standing and socializing. It is appropriately dark inside, helping to minimizing the wandering tourist from indiscriminately snapping pictures, catching bystanders in potentially awkward moments. There are a few rules and certain drink orders are not going to be accommodated. However, if you have a certain amount of couth, you'll be fine. Their nineteen hundred plus bottle inventory, of various Whiskey's, Tequila's, Gin's, Rum's, Mescal's, Sotol's, and Wine's, should be adequate to fill any libation combination you can throw at them. No, it's not overly expensive, but don't stroll in thinking that you're spending six dollars for a specialty cocktail. Unfortunately, all orders must be placed at the bar, there's no table service. My husband and I have been here a few times & never had an issue with the 'door man' checking our IDs. We're both clearly over 30. But last night, we were hassled at the door by a smart mouthed employee and we won't EVER return. Too bad for you as my husband loves good bourbon & we've spent a good amount of $$$ here in the past. If you're looking for something cheap, ask about the specials. In my opinion, this is a place to go when you want to celebrate or hang with friends from out of town! This bar is a joke. If I am going to pay $10 for a cocktail respect and great customer service is included; here it was NOT. The bartenders at this place are rude, disrespectful and so over themselves. They are supposed to be professional, and represent the establishment with their knowledge and customer service, but they don't care if there are people waiting to order a drink because they waste their time TAKING SHOTS behind the bar. Every time I've visited 1919 I've seen them taking shots, so I know this is not a one-time thing. I literally called them out and they laughed to my face. Also, on my last visit here the person clearing out the tables took my full drink that I had just bought while I stepped to the ladies room. Because the bar is really dark, people at my table hadn't realized he had just taken a full drink from the table until I got back. When I tried to talk to someone in the bar about getting a new cocktail, they laughed and said "you never ordered that", even though I had receipts and proof of my purchase. I love this place! It's a whiskey bar that's fashioned after speakeasies of yesteryear. My friend, Nickie, made reservations in advance, which I highly recommend. We were seated immediately and I couldn't help but notice how chill everyone was. Everyone was having a wonderful time and there weren't intoxicated, out of control folks. It's a classy establishment with house rules: no cosmos, no Long Island ice teas, no energy drinks, Jaegers or drinks of those kind served here. No loud taking. No cell phone conversations. IIllusion and perception are two different things but combined together can create a reality. Southtown in general is slowly becoming guilty of this. The tendency for some businesses here is to create spaces devoid of charm or any personality. If a place is fresh and hip it doesn't need to advertise it, it just simply is. I will say this until my last dying breath it's really the staff, owners and service that sets a place ablaze. Which brings me to 1919. Mind you, I came here for a special event where their backroom was reserved. The thinking is that a (pseudo)speakeasy denotes a classy vibe. In reality it feels very calculated, like a firm designed everything down to the last detail. Even the Prohibition Era entrance beneath another business screams pretentiousness. The interior is small with very limited seating. It's dark, way too dark for my liking. I'm also not sure if it has confused itself with a lounge or something divey but no matter. I say this as I imagine the goal was to create an experience that harkens back to a romantic era. Unfortunately the vibe betrays this notion. The scene is a mixed bag of professionals, locals and barhoppers. Sure the bartenders dress the part but I saw people who looked like they had just left Splashtown flip flops, booty shorts and all.The bartenders, service is really interesting here as well. I'm almost sure on their application it specifies, "You must worship the film, Cocktail!" Before I go into the brunt of my experience I must admit I'm not into mixed cocktails nor hard liquor. Instead I fancy myself a beer drinker. Without a doubt the spirits have precedence here. I say this as the tap selection is an afterthought and the service reflects this. For example barkeep marched back and forth like aimless penguins, that is unless you're buying liquor or their designer drinks. One glanced at me briefly presumably to see if I was a good tipper. Then kept on his merry way. I get that mixed drinks are the cash cow of this establishment. However a patron who orders a Cabernet, a Vieux Carre or a Lone Star Beer should all be held in the same regard. In addition the tap selection for beers was weak. Typically a place would have an equal distribution of light to dark beers. Instead it was IPA heavy with a focus on mediocre varities. For the most part beers were mainly offered in bottle form, some of it at a substantial markup. Forty dollars for a Dogfish Head 120 Min. that is ten dollars down the street seems a bit exorbitant. Then again bars can be a place of smoke and mirrors. After all presentation and appearance are illusion's best friend. In my opinion a bar serves a societal purpose. At that capacity it can provide the simplest form of escapism. In our real lives we are discounted, expected to be straight laced and just want to unwind. Who wants to go to a place where you feel like you're being ignored. Or opt for an ambiance that can't decide if it wants to be a "Stuffy Family Gathering" or a "Careless Whisper?" Sure a mixologist may know its bar's Dostoevsky-sized drink menu by heart but interpersonal skills, that's a real talent. read more

Set out for a drink before dinner with friends, tried this placed based on friends enjoyment. Not your typical bar and I'm perfectly ok with that. What i mean is you won't find Long Island ice teas. Rum and cokes. These are craft cocktails. We got there early about 7ish to enjoy the drinks without it being busy. Bar has a huge list of whiskeys to try, plus many more other liquors and beers. Bartender was great and informative about the different drinks. Order your drink and it's made right then, watch them serious best part of drink, seeing how it's made. Atmosphere, was quiet could enjoy a conversation, my old eyes thought it was a little dark to read the menu, but again that's just me. Definitely will be returning to this bar. read more

This is one of my favorite bars for at least five years now. If your looking for cheap beer, this isn't the spot for you. The "bartenders" are the very definition of true mixologists and drinks are always delicious and never taste like alcohol, all though you will walk out feeling great (wink, wink). Hands down, one of the best bars I have been to in 4 continents. It is a bit hidden as it sits on the basement level of their address. It does not have the high end finishes, nor the rooftop access, but it does have bartenders and owners, truely vested in offering a great drinking experience. The bartenders are well inform about their products and its history. As you walk-in, you see some of the finest spirits from around the globe, wall to wall. Please note, this is not the place to come to on an empty stomach. They do not serve food but you are allowed to bring food in. This bar was a rare find that someone the lives in the city told us about. To top that off, we were less than a mile from there in a AIRBNB. It wasn't easy to find, but what a find! This has got to be hand down the BEST bar I have ever been to! Only one vodka, but(what it seemed like) hundreds of whisky's. The specials that the bartenders make are phenomenal. They are also very personable and will explain what they are making. Our bartender even asked us what flavors we were interested in and could always make our drinks. It was completely empty when we arrived (given it was a Monday at like 4 PM) so we thought it might have been closed, but thankfully it was not. When we saw that they had $5 happy hour cocktails, the gloves were off and the Asian glows were on. Unbeknownst to us, one of the best drinks we'll ever have was about to be made, and for only $5(!?) Five bucks in Chicago gets you no more than a shot of bottom shelf tequila at best! All the other drinks we tried were excellent as well but I honestly can't remember which ones they were. This is a hidden gem. I've received excellent customer service from the amazing bartenders. They have a nice selection of unique cocktails to choose from. My two favorite drinks to get there are the Snow White and the Lingonberry Lick. The Lingonberry Lick cocktail has a nice kick of spice to it. You will find a drink that tickles your fancy for sure at 1919. It's a true speakeasy with no signage to tell you where they are located.
