I was told by my friends to post this review I wrote to them via text after my first time at Bar Botanico. Enjoy (and please go there! Great atmosphere! Great drinks!)! Today's drink I tried was called "Feature of the Month - Gisele." At first, the ingredient list looked dull compared to the others on the menu; there was even a drink titled "Cinema" that had popcorn infused bourbon and cheddar popcorn as a side! However, there I spotted it - the holy grail; the apple of my eye; the wonderment of my soul: the BAJA BLAST. As in, the iconic beverage of THE Taco Bell (where Live Más is more than just a phrase). That's when I knew - my drink and I had to Live Más. On first taste, it tasted fire. Or more like, it tasted LIKE fire. The tequila overpowered the entire thing. I was wondering how I would stomach it, or rather, how my liver would react. Then, my second sip, I was transported into a world of flavor. I tasted the hints of lime and pineapple I was promised, but more importantly, the Baja Blast sang. It was glorious. It was a soulful mixture of sweet and sour. As a girly whose flavor profile favors sour, and is a sucker for the aesthetically pleasing gimlet look, I loved the drink. I would in fact get it again. 10/10. read more

We ventured out of our typical walk to restaurants in the area to try this place. We have heard great things. We walked into the restaurant and sat at the bar for dinner. The bartender was great. Explained the concept and was very patient to my questions. Explained how this method helps eliminate food waste bc they are only providing food to your plate that you will eat. After understanding the concept, we expressed our dietary needs. My wife is gluten intolerant, does not eat red meat nor pork and we are both on the keto diet. Limiting our carb intake to 40 to 100, we try to limit our carb to drinks only. We order turkey burgers without buns. Eat deli meats wrapped in lettuce. Eat grilled shrimp, fish and chicken. Do not eat chips, bread, crackers, pizza or pasta. Pretty easy to do at most area restaurants. After our discussion with the bar tender, he suggested that we should start with the small plates at this time. We agreed. We strongly suggested a salad and expressed to him that shrimp meets our dietary restrictions. After our discussion with the bartender, he went to express our dietary needs to the chef. He said they were having trouble meeting both keto and GF. He said they are making some chip/ potato dish. We agreed bc we are not trying to be difficult. So after expressing that we prefer salads and shrimp, our chef selected small plate was 2 types of potato chips and potato fingerlings. I was starving so yes, I ate it. It was really good. But here is the problem. I didn't want carbs. So this meal kicked me out of keto for the next 4 days. Why would this chef send us 100% carbs when we were looking fit keto friendly food? Where is the salad we hinted at that we wanted? Why couldn't our small plate be shrimp and a salad? Potatoe chips?!!? Seriously??? So, while the co-owner and general manager who sat 8 feet from us focused on entertaining her friends, she did not even notice our dissatisfaction. She was more focused on people she knew instead of people she didn't know. My wife and spend a lot of money on restaurants in the area. We tip well. We appreciate the service industry and the people in it. It's personal. We rarely give bad reviews. We prefer giving good reviews and not spend the time on critical reviews. But I can not keep my mouth shut about this one. You want to have this cool new concept where you meet everyone's dietary needs with a chef designed meal and we come in with GF and keto and you fail big time! We could have been eating vegetables, cheese, shellfish or salad! But instead, you brought us a 100% potato meal! It's a big fail. Unique new place! In order to decrease waste, the menu each day is based on what fresh ingredients they have. You let them know if you want veggie, vegan, meat, or fish and they prepare from there! So I have a cherry allergy. And despite not being told they garnished our dish with dried cherries, I knew immediately when my mouth was itching and lip started swelling that something wasn't right about the appetizer we ordered even though it was delicious and our server said that they were able to let us know what is in their items despite the fast they don't actually create a menu daily and just sort of send out what they think best suites each guest. So this is the thing- they tout too much self assurance that they're able to adhere to guests allergies or intolerances despite the lack of listing what they have available. And ask what you have as an allergy. So I very much so told my server my allergies and then let them bring our first course. - utter BS! They literally almost sent me to the hospital! Thank GOD I live half a block away and can take measures to prevent myself from having a serious issue from accidentally ingesting cherries while enjoying their beets in creme fresh! But what's even worse is that our Saturday night was actually ruined because of this! We still had to pay our sitter, despite going home due to my allergic reaction. Which anyone w kids knows is $50 wasted. And even worse, we still paid the entire check except for the beets they tried to kill me with. So really the insult to injury is when your kid free night, costs way over $100's and all that comes of it is an hour at the restaurant without anything that resembled a meal, a bill for the meal and drinks, and a bill for childcare. I can't say we went back. Covid hit so I didn't get around to reviewing my post. I finally took some time to reflect on that horrific evening and it still is one of the worst dining experiences I've had. It was absolutely shocking to have a restaurant serve you the one thing you've told them you absolutely can or eat and then have them expect payment for the meal you could not enjoy after the entire night you planned was ruined. We came in with a large group for brunch and the staff there was very accommodating as we had last minute additions to our group. Their menu offers different meal options for brunch or pizza. I suffer from major decision fatigue. Every minute that I'm waiting for service, I'm thinking and re-thinking my entree. Bar botanico makes it so simple for people like me! You just have to pick whether you want veggies, meat, fish, or shellfish and let whatever happens, happen. My friends were skeptical of the concept, but I was like, "I got this... one meat set, one veggie set, and a small plate". It was so simple and every one was pleased with our meal. The small plate consisted of a buckwheat cracker with baba ghanoush, thin water-like celery root chips with a mackerel spread, and fried avocado with two different smokey aoilis. It was the right amount of food and everything tasted great, especially the mackerel. The veggie plate was pesto fettuccine with chickpeas, a romaine salad, and a butternut squash soup (which was my least favorite and not really family style, sorry I don't share soup during flu season). The romaine salad was top notch and the fettuccine was fresh and pleasant. The "meat set" consisted of charred broccoli in a creamy sauce, cauliflower with what tasted like tamarind sauce (favorite dish), and corned beef on cheesy grits and broccoli rabe, I think. It was definitely a unique way of eating corned beef, but I really liked the seasoning and crispy crust. The cheesy grits were a good accompaniment to the corned beef. Everything was tasty and we enjoyed our experience. The color of money drink was heavy on the celery flavor and tasted like a crisp garden in my mouth. I liked it. The service was also accommodating and attentive. We will definitely return! I would give 4.5 stars but I rounded up. read more

The service was absolutely horrible. There were only two other people in the entire restaurant but it still took ten minutes of sitting at the bar before someone took our drink order. I got the bartenders choice and no one explained what was in it. A party of 4 walked in twenty minutes after us and got their drinks before us. The food was fine (3.5/5) but their service was just inexcusable, especially in a place whose whole concept is letting the restaurant guide your experience. It really felt like the concept was a quarter baked at best and since the food was middling and the service awful I would recommend passing on this one unless they put some real effort into making some changes. read more

When we told him we were from out of town he gave us suggestions of other places to visit that he likes going to. He was also very thoughtful in making me non alcoholic drinks when usually a bartender will just give me the options of soda or seltzer. We spent a good amount of time here trying different drinks and relaxing. The volume level was pretty quiet on a Sunday night so it was very easy to have a conversation between four people at a bar. I stumbled on this place by chance today, and I am so glad I did! The inside decor is clean and simple, white with black accents and plants everywhere. It looked so welcoming and bright! Our server was so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Everyone in my party got the "I'm nuts for you" tea cocktail (mine was NA, dry January) and we split the cheesy garlic bread. They were so so good! The NA version was just as delicious as the alcoholic version, and my friends said theirs had a good amount of alcohol in them too. No pizzas, which I saw the huge wood burning oven in the back. My friend and I tried the cheesy garlic bread and the only thing that was edible was the cheese. They served it with puréed beets which was disgusting. Last I checked a simple red tomato sauce is vegan, why mess it up? We decided not to spend the money on dinner and left, because nothing looked good, and it seems like they're trying to mess up classic dishes with weird stuff. We got the veggie pizza set and a small plate set. Absolutely divine and delicious. They made sure about my shellfish allergy and every bite was absolutely heavenly. My fav was the chicken liver mousse and the delicious sauce that came with the mushroom rolls/taquito-esque dish. Hats off to the chefs!! I could eat my body weight in food there and have cocktails until my liver tells me it's time to make a Pitt stop at Presby's Starzl clinic. Had I remained in Pittsburgh this would be my joint. This place has an interesting concept for their food menu where you can choose between meat or veggie for entrees but what you get is a total surprise. Same with appetizers/side dishes. You are at least asked about any allergies or aversions, but otherwise you have no idea what you are going to get. As an adventurous eater that loves to try new things, I really enjoyed the concept. However, I feel like it may help to narrow things a bit so they focus on a particular style of food. For example, if you get a Japanese omakase you at least have an idea that it's going to be Japanese cuisine. Given that the concept for Bar Botanico is much more broad, it's hard to get in the mood for a certain type of food when you have no idea what sort of style it's going to be. The two dishes we received when we dined (we ordered one meat and one veggie) both happened to be asian inspired, but it seems other dishes are more Italian, latin, etc. I think it would also be nice for people who don't have food allergies or aversions to have a way to request meat vs. seafood depending on what you are in the mood for (maybe you could just say you had an aversion but I didn't want to be unnecessarily difficult if it was just a preference for what I was in the mood for that day). One other thing that wasn't clear was that the "3 small plates" option seems to includes more appetizer like things, but the "small plates" included with entrees are more like side dishes. But everything we had was fantastic, with a rich complexity of ingredients and flavors. I happen to love asian-style cuisine so it worked well for me. I tried two of the cocktails and both were excellent. The service was also fantastic. I enjoyed the decor and ambiance, which was very bright and clean with an artistic style. However, the music was quite loud and acoustics were not good, which made it very hard to have a conversation with my friend. read more

It was tasty...all three ounces of it. The appetizer was fine. We also ordered an entree with sides and a pizza with sides. The vegetarian pizza tasted good but I couldn't cut it with a knife and it was too messy to eat with my hands. The beef entree was tasty and we were given to understand that we would get four different sides. They gave us two: a very vinegary salad and a mountain of beets. The bartenders are knowledgeable - know their drinks well and are super friendly as well (no airs about them). The menu is dynamic and based on what is in house at the time. So for the happy hour food menu, there were two options: flatbread and set of 3. The flatbread option was right up my alley, vegan with sides of kimchi, raw veggies, and a really delicious hummus. The set of 3 was decided by the chef so we got mackerel paté (not everyone in my group was vegan/vegetarian), sweet potato chips with vinegar dip and a root vegetable chip side (I forget what it was exactly but it was extremely tasty and I'd get it again!).
