I came to see a band who just happened to be performing along with a puppet show, Puppets Come…read moreHome!, around Halloween. I was not interested in the puppets, I'd say I'm actually more anti-puppet than not but the show was amazing! I found out there's a whole puppeteering subculture in this city, and there were lots of performances I wouldn't have even considered to fall into that genre. The staff were all great, really welcoming and engaging. The manager Patrick as well as the MC of the show were so well versed in both Coney Island, sideshow, and general pop-culture history. And the band put on one hell of a show, they do creepy noir/murder ballads that draw inspiration from Tim Burton and other dark artists. The bar has a museum and gift shop and runs events most weekends (magic shows, fundraisers, burlesque, etc.). Unlike the rides, Freak Bar stays open every weekend into the winter. $6 Coronas. Come out, it's fun!

I'm not one to write negative reviews, but Patrick (GM, I think owner, and my least favorite…read morepatrick including bateman) ruined this place for me. What is a very cool historic spot could be an insane hangout if it wasn't for the sauntering a**hole pissing on a good time. I went in with a friend of mine and we are both huge Coney Island regulars. Her more than me. She's been past the place a million times and they're never open. She asks him about this in a friendly way, saying we love the spot and we've been dying to come in. His response is super snide, and the he pulls out his phone and shoves the website in her face as if we didnt think to look them up. We tried twice to talk to the guy and both times he was extremely condescending and unfriendly. Then he went behind the bar and proceeded to complain about us out loud, 18 inches away as if we couldn't hear. just for trying to have a conversation? We weren't drunk or belligerent, just trying to tell him we like the spot. Guy seems totally uninterested in what it means to own or run a bar, much less a cool ass spot like this. If you go on a night (whenever they feel like being open for business--better check the website!!!!!) when Patrick isn't there and it's just the bartender Jamie-- he is super cool kind and a great time. Wish I got time to or felt welcome to exploring the place. Hope it goes under new ownership or I won't be back to try again. cheers.

And then the waitress comes I asked for cranberry juice and quickly changed it to pineapple juice . She came back with cranberry , we asked for water she brought o e not two for the both of us , we asked for small plates for our food which just came and she brought to go containers instead . When we started ordering the food they didn't have fish for tacos they didn't have steak for tacos and no pork I believe as well . She said the mozzarella sticks were really good . Then they come a they are just plain simple out the bag ones with sprinkled dry parley on top. We asked for sprite they were out of sprite as well and this place got the damage audacity to apply an automatic 18 percent gratuity when she would have been lucky to get 5 bucks that service and lack of viability on a menu that had like 8 items on it as is !!' And the tacos as you can see in the picture the zero effort of pre shredded cheese , and smallest tacos shells ever 3 for 18$ not worth at all Won't come back for sure .

Service here is friendly and welcoming. The ambiance and very modern and chic. The drinks are bomb and the food was fresh and seasoned well. The plain fried wings were nice and crispy and I got my sauces on the side for alil kick. The hookah was also good... blueberry mint is my go to flavor. The dj was definitely spinning some tunes. Very clean restroom, nice decor. Great for after work, groups, date night, or even a girls night. Great happy hour pricing guaranteed to get you lit. I highly recommend.
