The ambience of this place is nice and the server was lovely but the value was really disappointing. The salad was so basic and the potatoes are just like fries and each cost $12. Maybe that's normal these days but it felt like a rip off. I did really enjoy the beef soup. We got the cheese dumplings which were also pretty good. I had the tarragon soda which was unique. I was excited to experience Georgian cuisine for my first time, but, should've kept walking past this restaurant ... Upon entering the establishment, I felt overwhelmed and confused by the off putting odor that consumed the interior. We were (somewhat) greeted by the server (possibly the only one working) - followed by escorting my partner and I to a hidden corner table at the back of the restaurant - even though the main room was full of available tables, with only one other family of 3 dining. The service continued to dissipate to the point of questioning if we were being intentionally ignored. After 15-20 minutes, the server approached the table, rushed me through the order without offering suggestions, or interest in our questions towards the menu. Once the orders were placed, I politely asked for water for the table. 10-15 minutes pass, and the server returns with a jug full of warm water, and 2 drinking glasses. We didn't see or hear from the server again, until the orders were brought to the table. By this point, the quality of the food is irrelevant. The negative experience and server, plus the unwelcoming environment was enough to ask for take-out containers only minutes after our order was delivered to the table. I was here for a private function, so I can't comment on a regular visit, but I can say that Georgian food is wonderful! So flavorful. There were dishes for many different kinds of meats - I would recommend the salmon or the lamb dishes (sorry I don't know the names of the dishes - they were served family style and without descriptions). The service was non-stop and flawless. Surroundings were simple, clean and basic, but with the selection and taste of this food, I really didn't care how the space was decorated. Appetizer: best option - Hachapuri "Adjarski style" (one is good for 4 people), second option - "phali assorty" or "dolma" 2. First dish - one of the soups, classics is "Harcho". Second option is Chihirtma 3. Hinkali - is not an "dumpling appetizer". The eating procedure is following: Holding one Hinkal in hands, bite a small hole and suck a juice from it, eat the whole thing except a top tip (which is holder). Have you ever happened to receive a check without ever asking for it, literally in the middle of your meal and without any warning? We, a group of five elderly ladies, did have that shocking experience tonight. I must say it happened for the first time in my life. It was so rude and so unexpected that we didn't even understand at first that a thing handed to us was really a check. When we asked if we could order some coffee they refused saying they were closing, though it was only 9:15 pm and according to the website the place is open daily until midnight. Obviously, they simply didn't want to stay longer because at the moment we were the only customers. In all aspects, customer care is below zero. They never showed up to ask if anything was needed. They never even offered to change the plates. We actually had, after a long wait, to call the waiter who was busy watching stuff on his phone in the empty restaurant and ask for our dirty plates to please be changed. Overall, it was a very unpleasant experience. In fact, such attitude totally nullified the pleasure of the good food. I definitely wouldn't recommend that place if you don't want to feel disappointed and humiliated. read more

Georgia on my mind? Well yes Ray -- with a twist. This is not the land of Jimmy Carter -- but it is that peanut farmer president's 40 year old immigration policies who these Georgians of the Caucuses have to thank -- for a soft Brighton Beach landing and a sturdy foothold for their very authentic Tbilisi-style restaurant. Brighton is, after all, the land of milk and honey for expat Soviets and their gold coast in NYC -- and a more recent influx from central asia and the Caucuses has written yet another chapter into a centuries old melting-pot food history of Brooklyn. As a well traveled expat, sweetie knows Georgian food from her visits there -- when Russia was still a "Union" -- and she was skeptical about the authenticity of everything we ate -- but I am impressed by the contemporary Georgian food culture at GH, it's service and the overall ambiance. For starters -- the room itself is warm -- as in earth-tones with wood everywhere -- which makes it very appealing on the cold and blustery day when we visited. This is also true about the wait staff -- two sturdy young gents who happily answered all of my questions about the variety of food we ate -- and the Georgian wine that we drank with it (Mariani btw - make sure the SKU starts with "86" to be sure its authentic -- said our server). The dry white was crisp but perhaps too dry and lacking in depth and fruit for my tastes. Just about everything in Georgian cuisine relies on ground walnuts, pomegranate and a spice mix known as "khmeli suneli" -- the last being an intoxicating mix of coriander, dill, basil, bay leaf, marjoram, blue fenugreek, parsley, safflower or saffron, black pepper, celery, thyme, hyssop, mint, and hot pepper. This is the Georgian version of Indian curry or garam masala and it made the lamb dishes we ate exotic and redolent with bright flavors. The Georgian salad starter was infused with this spicing and walnuts which turned simply sliced cucumbers, red onions and tomatoes into a home run of flavors and textures. Get this. The Phali is another winning first -- showcasing several versions of ground and spiced walnuts with additions -- like spinach in one, eggplant in another and a third wrapped in steamed cabbage. The shoti served with -- a traditional crusty bread delivered steaming hot -- is just the best vehicle for eating the various walnut spreads and the tastiest bread I've eaten in ages -- so good we took the leftovers home with us. The Chachapuri was decent -- this is basically a tomato-less cheese pizza -- but with Salaguni cheese -- a salty and tart version of mozzarella -- not as stringy and very creamy. Nice. Less to our liking was the Khinkali -- the Georgian take on xiao long bao -- which here is made with beef and pork (Tbilisi style) but which we've had elsewhere with only ground lamb as a filling -- which I prefer. The dough used for these dumplings was thick and rubbery -- and while the filling was decent and spiced authentically -- the overall experience was underwhelming. Somewhat better was the Chanakhi -- a traditional lamb stew with potatoes, tomato's and eggplant -- braised until all the flavors and spicing come together. Very satisfying -- if a bit skimpy on the lamb -- and heavy on the rendered fat -- but great for mopping with the gratis bread. The lulya kebab (Georgian adana) comes wrapped in lavash and is pretty standard Georgian fare -- the filling is well seasoned ground lamb served with roasted potato wedges along with house made satsebeli (tomato) and tkemali (green plum) sauces -- 2 traditional sauces served with this meal. We also ate an excellent chicken kebab that was perfectly moist -- well seasoned with Georgian spices and charred just right. On the food alone -- GH is a 3.5 for me -- I round up to 4 based on the vibe and service. This is not your average mediterranean food and you should not confuse the two -- it is much more sophisticated in flavoring and spicing -- unique really. GH also offers live music on weekends and caters to a mostly local Russian/Georgian crowd said our server -- serving until 3:30 am. If you are up for a cultural immersion foray in Brooklyn -- this is one place to consider. Top Tip: GH was empty for our early dinner -- but I so want to hang out here and drink Georgian wine into the wee hours -- with Georgian music blasting in my ear. I'll start by saying that the Food is great. Very authentic and well presented and they should get 5 stars for the Food, but service has a lot to be desired. This is not a quick meal. Be patient and expect to wait a long time to eat. The wait staff are nice, but there was only 1 server when we sat down. A 2nd one came on about an hour later. When we arrived, the restaurant was about 1/2 full and most people looked like they had already been served. The place has about 20 tables. From sitting down to ordering was approx 20 minutes. Ordering to appetizers, almost 1 hour and we got an app we didnt order. Apps to Entree, almost another hour, plates didn't come out together and we never got one of our entrees. My suspicion is the kitchen is responsible for the slow food - it all came out very hot, but wrong apps and missed entrees are the servers responsibility. Neither the added app or missing entree were on our bill, so that's a plus. Bottom line - good food, service is incredibly slow. read more

First off, I'm giving this 4 stars because the food was fantastic. Unfortunately, our service was really bad. One of our dishes was completely forgotten. When we reminded them they said it would be another 20 minutes because they still had to prepare it and we declined. We got no drink refills. We sat there for over 2 hours and it was only two of us. However, I am very understanding because it was very busy with a few large parties. They also gave us a free slice of cake to apologize, though I wasn't a big fan of it. If the service was good, I'd give it five stars because the food was very good. The Ajarian Khachapuri was phenomenal-cheesy, flavorful, filling, and the egg was cooked to perfection. My favorite dish there! we also got shkmeruli (a garlic chicken dish in a milky sauce.) For the price, the chicken dish was kind of small, but boy was it delicious. The sauce was amazing and had the perfect amount of garlic. The service was not good, but I will go back because the food was that excellent and they were apologetic. This is the place if you want tasteful decor, live music, dance floor, cloth napkins, etc. For vegetarians, I recommend the cheese dumplings, and the cheese breads, and the red bean stew. We had ordered the mushroom stew, but what they brought us was something else. They didn't say anything, but it turned out to be meat. Not cool! Overall, good Georgian traditional experience. We went for an early dinner for a family birthday. We got everything to share (which is recommended for this kind of cuisine). - assortment of pkhali. This was delicious and a great starter. They gave a plate of 4 different pkhalis. - Adjaruli khachapuri was amazing! Really made to perfection! - Khinkali we got with meat and with cheese. The meat ones were great! They were the perfect amount of spice! The cheese ones I honestly was not a fan of at all! I am a huge cheese lover and this was just not my thing. Would not get it again. - fried potatoes with mushroom. Would not recommend! They were served with mushrooms and some grilled veggies. I was not a fan of the dish and the taste (especially for how over priced It was) - mushroom soup was good but nothing special I think the moral of the story is to only get the very traditional Georgian items on the menu (which is the point of visiting this restaurant) read more

Following Hurricane Sandy, Brighton Beach has unfortunately lost its luster. All the best traditional Russian supermarkets closed down and the higher crime rate keeps many people away. But this place can be its revival. The decor reminds me of an old timey Soviet cabin (like the ones in the movies I watched as a kid). It's dark but spacious. The wait staff really are attentive and friendly. But what should bring you here is the food. It's truly amazing. I came with my American husband who was able to find delicious eats without the menu being any watered down Americanized version for mass appeal. For an appetizer you can't go wrong with Khachapuri, a thick doughy bread with cheese. We had the one with an egg. You break pieces off and dip them right into the middle. It's amazing and unique and I don't think you'll find anything like it. Our main courses were different types of meats, what Georgian cuisine is famous for. We had lamb chops, pork kebabs, and a mixed meat lula kebab with cheese (a type of kebab made of ground meat). I didn't really like the pork but the others were amazing: perfectly cooked and seasoned. There is also music here and while we came on a Thursday, the place was very lively, a complete difference from the quiet Brighton Beach streets outside. The music was Georgian but they played some more traditional dancing music too. I am definitely coming back here again! read more
