Poor quality and customer service. My husband and I were married one year ago and we purchased my wedding band from here. Last night I noticed one of the diamonds in my wedding band was missing. I called Bar-Kay to ask if there was any type of warranty. I was cut off mid sentence and given a response of "No of course not we do not hold any warranty for wear and tear, maybe if it was two weeks but not a year." I then asked if there was any way of looking up my purchase since I now live out of state and my receipt is at my parents house in Philadelphia to possibly give a rough estimate of repair cost. They do not keep any record of purchases. My mom who thought I misunderstood called herself to double check. The response my mom was given was "I cannot keep warranties for every customer, if you bought a pair of sneakers and something happened to them a year later would you expect the company to fix it?" My mom then explained to her she called 4 other jewelers in the area and each one said that it can be common for diamonds to fall out, however they back their clients and fix it. At this point the Bar-Kay employee started to change her tone stating "well just tell her to bring it in and I will see what I can do." No thanks. My family will never go back here. If you are looking for a jeweler in the Northeast Philly, Rockledge or Abington area please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. read more

I realize, since they will be closing their doors for good tomorrow, this more than likely is a waste of a review..however, there is one day left, so maybe...just maybe I can save someone a lot of money and a lot of unnecessary grief. I went in yesterday early evening, and I was a bit late. The dark haired woman did let me in briefly, however, like I have read in a few other reviews, she wasn't exactly 'pleasant.' But, I thought to myself, if they are a family owned business, they quite possibly could be sad, stressed out...a myriad of emotions. So I decided to come back the next day. I always say...never ignore your intuition....When I arrived the second time, they were fairly busy. I knew exactly what I wanted before I even entered, and somehow, I just knew that I would not be leaving with a new piece of jewelry...actually..I should rephrase that...I was totally prepared to leave with several pieces of jewelry provided they were knowledgeable, honest and kind. You know the saying..."three strikes you're out?" That's pretty much how my experience with these people all went down. Let's start with knowledgeable. I did not say a word (at first) about my extensive studies with jewelry and Gemology. I simply told them I was there to replace a diamond ring, possibly a band to match, and if the price was right, I'd buy diamond studs and even maybe a diamond solitaire necklace. Had I been the owner of that store, I would have been on cloud nine...because after tomorrow when they shut their doors, all of that inventory gets sorted through, divided up, and literally...they will get pennies on the dollar (if they're lucky...) but we have all read and experienced greed either in our own personal lives or simply books that warn us of what greed can ultimately do. I first tried on a very pretty modified oval and baguette diamond engagement ring. I saw the original price, and then the sale price. They are advertising 70-80% off. That is simply Not True! But I've done this before...I know how the game is played, and had they been what they "claimed" I would have played the car dealership game a bit longer...normally, when dealing with knowledgeable, credible jewelers you will see on websites, business cards and especially word of mouth their credentials. I made the mistake of telling them that I had studied a bit at the GIA. And boom. I felt like that kid that nobody wants to sit next to on the bus. The man who waited on me did not have a clue as to what he was talking about. You do not have to be a graduate gemologist to know this. But people don't know how this works with (most) jewelry stores like this. 95% of the pieces were simply awful. Cookie cutter jewelry with no creativity. Nothing special in the slightest, and yet...they were selling these pieces for what I would normally pay when buying from REAL graduate gemologists...people who not only know what they are talking about...people who are patient and friendly...this is an investment. These prices were absolutely exorbitant for what they were selling...and when I was told the center stone was 'D' colored...(i'll get to the rest of the four C's in a minute) I laughed to myself...had he not been so uninformed and LYING I would have bought that sucker in a New York Minute. Do you guys know how rare it is to have a genuine, certified COLORLESS diamond?? I'll just say it's quite rare indeed...and this wasn't it! It did not have any body color meaning..a yellow hue or tint that many diamonds possess because like I said...colorless diamonds, even near colorless are rare. But a D?? I asked him if I could kindly use his loupe. Yep. All bets were off after that request. He knew that I knew.so he became exasperated showing me anything after I louped the ring myself. He also told me it was a VS1. So...there's internally flawless...kind of like a D colored stone...doesn't happen often. Then you have the almost never seen VVS1 and VVS2. After that is VS1...Very Slightly Included. What I saw...many black small spots (carbon inclusions) as well as feathers (a different type of inclusion in a diamond) but because of the way it was cut, to the naked eye, or the untrained eye, it looked pretty good. But to pay close to $6000 for a center stone that wasn't even a carat...HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!! And this is a going out of business sale?? Lying about your credentials...claiming they had their Graduate Degrees in Gemology...do you know what would happen if any of these 'people ' wrote you an appraisal? Well..I suppose nothing because as of tomorrow they will be gone. I was so disappointed on so many levels. It gives real, honest and knowledgeable jewelers such a bad name. The owner (who was just a miserable person) was the final nail in the coffin...I thought I'd be nice and smile and tell him he had pretty things...his reply? "Why don't you buy something then? Thank goodness this place is shutting their doors...I am amazed that someone out there didn't shut it for them long ago. read more

Poor customer service. My husband took his good gold watch to Bar Kay last Thursday for a new battery. While trying to change the battery they broke the gold piece that holds the wrist band in place. The woman (blonde) who broke it never offered to repair the watch and then told my husband, it would cost him $25.00 to have it fixed and said she couldn't guarantee what they needed to do would work. The battery was never changed and she never even offered to repair the watch she broke. This watch has sentimental value and is important to my husband. Surprised by what encountered and wanting to make a scene, he left. We have shopped there for years, spent a great deal of money there and have always defended Bar Kay when others complained about their customer service. Unfortunately, we will never return, and will let others know just how Bar Kay treats their customers. read more

a stone fell off on my ring and put it in to get fixed. the ring is fixed, then two days later a stone fell off again. I have moved to ny at this point but came back anyways to see if i can get it fixed for free. the clerk chris says "it probably is not the same stone but we're going to do it for you anyways" I assume there will be free service. she tells me it will be done in two - three weeks. It takes a whole month before I call them to remind them the ring shoved in the back room somewhere. then they tell me it will be $65 because two more stones fell off during the process and had to fix that. I call them to complain, the jeweler gets on the phone an threatens me that if i want my ring, i have to pay $65. I could've gotten this done for $40, why would i drive two hours to get it done for $25 more? very very rude to customers, late on work, over priced. read more

My family has frequented this jewelry store for years. However, for this review, I'll limit it to my personal experiences. I bought a silver necklace online (not from them) which needed repairs, and the jewelers here were able to repair it, good as new. They took a deposit, but it is deducted from the final price of the service. I don't remember the cost, but as a high school student at the time, it was reasonable. This was in...2009? The chain later broke by the clasp and needed repairs, and it was fixed. Again, good as new. (before 2012) I've also taken my watch to get battery replacements when needed (today, and recent years), and it's always replaced in a timely matter on the spot. They'll even reset the time for you! Okay, the second hand of my watch fell off. Now normally that is the kind of repair that would be done as you wait. And my old, retired jeweler would not only replace the hand but he would remove the scratches from the crystal on the watch. Well, it took 2 weeks to get my watch back. Two weeks just to put the second hand back on. AND, were the scratches removed from the crystal? No, Not happy. If I could give them a half star I would. They don't rate a whole star. read more

I have done business with Bar-key Jewelers for a period of twenty years. Each experience has been a sheer pleasure as a result of receiving service that has be outstanding. As a valued costumer they have actually repaired certain items without charge. Each Sales person has demonstrated a demeanor of good will and service, along with honesty which i consider to be priceless. It is my Family jeweler. The quality is excellent, along with provided guide lines for purchasing a diamond. DON' T WASTE YOUR TIME! I was having an engagement ring being made. My mother gave me a old diamond ring to have it made into an engagement. I was told by a friend that bar kay was reasonable and trustworthy jeweler. Boy were they wrong! I was getting engaged at the end of February. The 26th to be exact. I took the old ring in on the 11th January. I pick out a setting and added sapphires. I told them that I needed the ring before the 26th of February. The owner told me that the ring would be done before the 26th of February. They also said that they would be going on vacation from the 17th to the 25th of February, but assured me that the ring would be finished before then. I even put $100 deposit on the work to assure that it would be done on time. They said that they would call when the ring was finished. That's when everything went wrong. I never received a phone call from bar kay, so I went to the jewelers on 15th to pick up the ring. I knew they would be on vacation the next week. The store wasn't open. I went back on the 26th of February. The day they were supposed open from vacation and the day I need the ring. THE RING WASN'T READY! I was furious. They didn't have reasonable excuse of why it was complete. They tried to lie to me by saying that they called me before they went on vacation. Obviously they didn't realize that cell phones save all calls in a log. I wanted to take the ring back and go somewhere else to have the ring set, but I was screwed for time. I was suppose to get engaged that day and I was leaving for Las Vegas to get married that weekend. They got the ring set by noon; however they ruin my engagement plans. If they could set the diamond and sapphires the ring in 3 hours, then why couldn't they have finished it in a month and a half? Ill never do business with them again. They also lost out. Had a ring sized there. The owner waited on me and I thought the price was too high for just sizing a ring. After measuring my finger size I asked how much it would cost. He yells over to one of the female employees " How much do we charge to size a ring"? He should know that since he is the one doing it in the back of his store. What a coincidence that people are experiencing the same nonsense that I did when Bar-Kay was still at their Rising Sun location. I had been a loyal customer of their's since 2001. I had work done by them in the past and since I had no problem with the pieces at that time, I guess everything was friendly and peaceful. Just when I thought that I found a jeweler for life, I had just gotten a ring repaired and two days later the stone fell out. Michelle told me to bring it in and they would fix it, since by some miracle I still had the stone. Well they charged me $43.00! I was appalled!. After going back and forth over the phone, I settled for paying half of the cost which was still ridiculous. I told myself that if the $21.50 was going to get my ring back and get them out of my life forever, so be it! Sad for all of the other customers who have had the same misfortune, but so glad that I wasn't alone! read more

The negative review sounds like it comes from the A typical New Yorker and their shopping habits...complain loud enough and you may get it for FREE. Why did you come two hours to a jeweler here in Philadelphia?. This particular establishment has been in business for many years and is well respected as a quality, customer friendly and reasonably priced Jeweler. My family just as hundreds of our local families have for generations shopped at Bar-Kay Jewelers with wonderfully performed quality of work and service. Bar Kay has always been wonderful to deal with for my family - both for purchases and for repairs. Sometimes it does take a little while to get your item but it's always done correctly and gleamingly cleaned. I believe their prices are fair - good jewelry is never cheap.
