After years of driving by and seeing the hanging octopus I finally stopped in to celebrate a friends birthday!! A seafood birthday dinner has become her tradition, can't say I'm upset about this!! We started off with drinks! Two of us got the Floral Cloud and the other two got the salty air margarita! The salty foam (replacing the traditional salt rim) was perfection!! The presentation of the floral cloud was so cute! For starters we got the patatas bravas, 10/10 would recommend!! The sauce was delicious!! I personally got the poke bowl, it was love at first bite!! While it may not look like a huge portion I was only able to finish 3/4 of it. Shared with the after in an attempt to save room for dessert!! Two of my friends got the scallops and the other got the lobster roll. Scallops were delicious, they shared a bite with me! The lobster roll left me a bit unsatisfied. While it had plenty of meat it lacked lasting flavor!! Now let's talk about the MVP's of the night- Dessert! HIGHLY recommend the key lime pie if you're a fan! It also includes some of that salt foam! The sticky toffee was a huge hit at our table!! And the passion fruit in the flan was a very yummy add on!! Our server was the best!! She was so lovely and made excellent recommendations!!

We loved this place! We initially thought we would be sitting looking at the river but it's a bit farther in and we couldn't see the river from our table but no big deal. The ambiance was beautiful, our waiter was so kind, and the service was great. The waiter misheard my order so I didn't get my right entree the first time but they were super kind, quick, and accommodating to bring out my correct order. The food was AMAZING! We shared the tuna tartar as an appetizer and it was one of the best things i've tried! The presentation was also so fun and pretty, served inside a coconut with plantain chips on the side. I ordered the lobster roll and it was so so so amazing, definitely best i've ever had. The bun was toasted and buttery and the lobster filled with flavor.. I could eat 5 of them!! They also had brought seasoned corn nuts to the table when we were seated and salted caramels for dessert, both fun and yummy. Would recommend to anyone looking for a bit of a nicer dinner in Chicago. We had a reservation on a Saturday night and it looked like the place was full, we were glad we had one and got seated right away.

Wonderful team dinner. Shrimp cocktail app was my fav and of course the burger was also amazing! Highly recommend.

What a great spot for lunch. I liked going here with coworkers, as the indoor/outdoor atmosphere blends together very nicely. I got a lobster roll two separate times, the first was better where it was warm & buttery, the second roll left a bit to be desired (cold, not as much lobster). The caviar cone was a pinch small though, I'd skip it next time personally. Service is fantastic, definitely loved the deconstructed key lime pie. So light and fluffy, so don't skip on dessert!

My daughter and I recently purchased an apartment, and our realtor & her daughter treated us for dinner at Bar Mar to celebrate. We had a great time! We were busy talking, and asked our server to just bring some appetizers for the table. Everything she brought was excellent - the Himachi cones, Neptune's pillows, ceviche, and salmon crudo. These were great small plates to share while talking and drinking cocktails. For our meal, three of us had salads while one person chose the lobster roll. All were good, but honestly the appetizers stole the show. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but service was excellent!

Bar Mar is a solid spot in Downtown Chicago. The interior decor and atmosphere was great for a nice dinner. Most of the food was tremendous. My favorites were the crab cake, Cobb salad, and short rib. The crab cake was very soft and had a nice texture to it. It was one of the best crab cakes I've eaten. The Cobb salad was also very light and shareable. The short rib main course was very tender, and it came with crispy potatoes as well. Some of the other items such as the Philly cheesesteak and Asian tacos were just ok. They were also both very small in quantity relative to their price. The desserts were magnificent as well, especially the deconstructed key lime pie and sticky toffee pudding. Both of them were phenomenal. The service throughout my meal was excellent. My waitress gave us some nice recommendations, and the staff came by often. I would definitely recommend to visit Bar Mar, and I look forward to coming back myself when I am in Chicago.

Bar Mar is a definite must-visit for anyone looking for a top-tier dining experience! From the moment you walk in, the aesthetics are absolutely stunning - it's such a sexy and chic place, perfect for a special night out. The staff was truly amazing, providing service that was attentive and made us feel incredibly welcome. The food itself is pretty good, though I'd note that many dishes are quite sauce-heavy. I personally prefer a lighter touch with sauces to let the main ingredients shine, but that's just a personal preference. That being said, the crab cake was delicious, and the sea bass was a standout; both were excellently prepared. Unfortunately, the lobster roll had a bit too much sauce for my liking, which really overpowered the delicate flavor of the lobster. We also tried the mussels on special, which I had high hopes for given the seafood focus, but the cooking was inconsistent - some were perfectly done, while others were a bit off. Overall, Bar Mar excels in creating a beautiful ambiance with exceptional service. While some of the dishes might benefit from a lighter hand with the sauce, the highlights like the crab cake and sea bass are definitely worth trying.

I was very underwhelmed by Bar Mar. For how expensive this restaurant is, I was hoping the food was going to be drastically better than it was. I got a lobster roll and salad and the portion was tiny and my lobster roll was basically all bread. I was still hungry after I ate this and did not feel like it was worth the price. I will say that my drink was good and the atmosphere on this inside was really fun and cool. I would probably go back for drinks sometime but wouldn't order any food again

Really delicious and very happy we came for NYE! I decided to bring my sister outside and Baazar didn't disappoint. You can find the NYE visit on my socials @damnthosesteaktacos IG & TikTok. Service again was top tier! We received complimentary Cava and table bites as we decided on what to order! Last night we can with friends and again everything was a 20 out of 10! When you visit just show them my photos to order . When deciding what to wear, I recommend blues, yellows, whites, pinks, and greens for sure! Personal food: I highly recommend the Jose taco, coffee rubbed steak + Pisco Sour .

Wonderful from start to finish. Stopped by the other day for lunch and was incredibly impressed with all aspects of Bar Mar. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by friendly staff and exceptional ambience. I ordered the salmon crudo and poke bowl. Both were incredible and I'm definitely itching to come back.

I've been eyeing this spot for a while, so Restaurant Week 2025 felt like the perfect excuse to finally try it and wow, I'm so glad we did. We went for lunch and everything was so good. The decor is stunning, and the location is a perfect downtown Chicago corner. It wasn't crowded at all, which made the experience even better, and our waiter was excellent and attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed every bit of it, and it was extra special since we were celebrating my friend's birthday. Highly recommend this place, and another great restaurant from José Andrés.

Exquisite service, food, bar and setting! Best dining experience we've had in a very long time. Pro tip: get the Neptune's Pillows!

First round at Bar Mar did not disappoint! The pulpo appetizer is a must to match the Octopus light fixture above the bar... plus delicious virgin drinks that are not too sweet!

If I'm 16 and want to take out my girlfriend here, although its a bar can we still go just us no parents?

Hi Kieran! Yes, you can absolutely come in for dinner.

Is there a tasting menu? If so, what are the portions like?

Yes there is a tasting menu, but everyone at the table has to choose it in order to be able to order it.

How loud is the restaurant over dinner i.e. can you hear the conversation at your table?

I thought the noise level was very reasonable request a high top and you will have more privacy. Our party of 2 was seated so that one of us was in a long booth, with strangers on both sides of me and my friend across from me in a chair. It turned…

Does the restaurant have vegetarian options?

Pescatarian but none of the meals were vegetarian.

Is there a brunch menu, 11:45 reservation?

They don't serve brunch. They are however open Monday-Friday 11:00am-11:00pm and Saturday 3:00pm-11:00pm. Closed Sunday's.

Is it first come, first serve at the bar?

    Yes.

    Is there a dress code?

No dress code. But it’s a nice place so just know that.

    Do they have parking?

They have valet parking available right in front of the restaurant

Does this restaurant have a happy hour?

    No, they currently don't.

We loved Jaleo in DC so I'd like to take my wife here for her birthday. Can I bring our kids who age 14, 15, 16 or is it predominantly a bar?

You should definitely bring them- it's more of a restaurant than a bar.

All the premier dinners come with salad, cheese, fondue, and the chocolate fondue - You are just choosing what protein you would like. The Prince Geja combination has a little bit of everything. However, we most liked the seafood which includes lobster and the scallops were to die for! Also the beef also cooks well. Favorite dipping sauce included the pimento mayo, chimichurri, and garlic butter. The cheese fondue is quite rich and the bread is quite filling so maybe get as much cheese as you can on each piece of bread. The chocolate fondue, I think is actually the best course as the Belgium chocolate melts so well and has a decadent but not overly sweet flavor. It pairs well with all that is provided for dipping, which includes poundcake, rice Krispies, strawberries. They also have some liquor that they light on fire at first so you can roast the marshmallows. It is such a well thought out experience. Service flows very well from two waiters who take your order set up your fondue pots for each course, but be prepared to spend at least 2 hours on this experience. Check out the Groupon but also I read a review that they just tack on the extra $50 so it's not really too much of a savings. Not sure if this is true.

The truffle-parmesan fries: We couldn't tell if they were too salty or just salty enough, but somehow we couldn't stop eating them! I came here with three others and we all ordered different things from the brunch menu along with a few drinks. The atmosphere here is open, modern, and pretty eye catching, we all heard a few negative comments about brunch here and rather than just taking words of advice we came anyways. To be honest we should've went elsewhere, the only thing about the food that actually seemed to have any flavor was the fries and even they were a little salty like my wallet when we left LOL The Jumbo (not so much) Lump Crab Benedict at $25 was honestly boring lacking any flavor also it didn't even come with potatoes I ended up sharing my Lincoln Park Turkey Club that was good but even it was pretty basic at $21, the Burger at $21 literally looked like something off the kids menu the bun was bigger than the patty LOL and the Blackened Chicken Caesar at $19 was more like an appetizer size and the chicken at least it was juicy not dry. Other reviews about brunch here seem to be about the same and honestly I think it's funny they don't even try to elevate their food when so many say about the same things. I think the only reason why people come to this place is 1. It's located in Lincoln Park and 2. that makes it a trendy spot to eat. So why bother fixing anything when it's just trendy and flavorless Their brunch is mediocre but apparently dinner is where it's at. However after the experience with brunch I'm not even sure I would even go back. Come here for the staff eat at your own expense maybe your food will have flavor or not but honestly do what you want and keep it trendy

I really wanted to like it; this was a nine-year anniversary dinner. Service was really attentive and friendly and I did appreciate that they brought out specific utensils for me as a left-handed person, never saw that before! The restaurant felt a bit bare and sterile, I think I was maybe expecting a little more decor on the table for a Michelin star restaurant. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. The beef was the most disappointing part, I couldn't even chew through all of it. The add-ons were the best part - pasta was great and our dessert was delicious. But the rest of the meal was unfortunately mediocre. Hoping that others have a different experience with the regular menu!
