My daughter and I recently purchased an apartment, and our realtor & her daughter treated us for dinner at Bar Mar to celebrate. We had a great time! We were busy talking, and asked our server to just bring some appetizers for the table. Everything she brought was excellent - the Himachi cones, Neptune's pillows, ceviche, and salmon crudo. These were great small plates to share while talking and drinking cocktails. For our meal, three of us had salads while one person chose the lobster roll. All were good, but honestly the appetizers stole the show. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but service was excellent!

Bar Mar is a solid spot in Downtown Chicago. The interior decor and atmosphere was great for a nice dinner. Most of the food was tremendous. My favorites were the crab cake, Cobb salad, and short rib. The crab cake was very soft and had a nice texture to it. It was one of the best crab cakes I've eaten. The Cobb salad was also very light and shareable. The short rib main course was very tender, and it came with crispy potatoes as well. Some of the other items such as the Philly cheesesteak and Asian tacos were just ok. They were also both very small in quantity relative to their price. The desserts were magnificent as well, especially the deconstructed key lime pie and sticky toffee pudding. Both of them were phenomenal. The service throughout my meal was excellent. My waitress gave us some nice recommendations, and the staff came by often. I would definitely recommend to visit Bar Mar, and I look forward to coming back myself when I am in Chicago.

Bar Mar is a definite must-visit for anyone looking for a top-tier dining experience! From the moment you walk in, the aesthetics are absolutely stunning - it's such a sexy and chic place, perfect for a special night out. The staff was truly amazing, providing service that was attentive and made us feel incredibly welcome. The food itself is pretty good, though I'd note that many dishes are quite sauce-heavy. I personally prefer a lighter touch with sauces to let the main ingredients shine, but that's just a personal preference. That being said, the crab cake was delicious, and the sea bass was a standout; both were excellently prepared. Unfortunately, the lobster roll had a bit too much sauce for my liking, which really overpowered the delicate flavor of the lobster. We also tried the mussels on special, which I had high hopes for given the seafood focus, but the cooking was inconsistent - some were perfectly done, while others were a bit off. Overall, Bar Mar excels in creating a beautiful ambiance with exceptional service. While some of the dishes might benefit from a lighter hand with the sauce, the highlights like the crab cake and sea bass are definitely worth trying.

Exquisite service, food, bar and setting! Best dining experience we've had in a very long time. Pro tip: get the Neptune's Pillows!

Honestly, no notes. From the service to the decor to the food! Perfection! I ordered the salt water margarita and it was as fresh as the sea. The seafood was delish! I can't wait to go back.

I was very underwhelmed by Bar Mar. For how expensive this restaurant is, I was hoping the food was going to be drastically better than it was. I got a lobster roll and salad and the portion was tiny and my lobster roll was basically all bread. I was still hungry after I ate this and did not feel like it was worth the price. I will say that my drink was good and the atmosphere on this inside was really fun and cool. I would probably go back for drinks sometime but wouldn't order any food again

Bar Mar was so beautiful! We ordered a few things to share for the table, and all were so tasty. The server recommended a few of the most popular items and it didn't disappoint! Very happy we chose this restaurant!

Really delicious and very happy we came for NYE! I decided to bring my sister outside and Baazar didn't disappoint. You can find the NYE visit on my socials @damnthosesteaktacos IG & TikTok. Service again was top tier! We received complimentary Cava and table bites as we decided on what to order! Last night we can with friends and again everything was a 20 out of 10! When you visit just show them my photos to order . When deciding what to wear, I recommend blues, yellows, whites, pinks, and greens for sure! Personal food: I highly recommend the Jose taco, coffee rubbed steak + Pisco Sour .

I've been eyeing this spot for a while, so Restaurant Week 2025 felt like the perfect excuse to finally try it and wow, I'm so glad we did. We went for lunch and everything was so good. The decor is stunning, and the location is a perfect downtown Chicago corner. It wasn't crowded at all, which made the experience even better, and our waiter was excellent and attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed every bit of it, and it was extra special since we were celebrating my friend's birthday. Highly recommend this place, and another great restaurant from José Andrés.

Wonderful from start to finish. Stopped by the other day for lunch and was incredibly impressed with all aspects of Bar Mar. When you walk in, you're immediately greeted by friendly staff and exceptional ambience. I ordered the salmon crudo and poke bowl. Both were incredible and I'm definitely itching to come back.

Bar Mar is a magical restaurant sitting in between the Loop and West Loop, it's worth your while in paying them a visit. From their open patio dining space in the summer, to their bedazzling golden aquatic interior in the colder months, you'd surely impress a crowd in here. My experiences have alway been very pleasant. My waitress, Jessica, was especially a sweetheart in helping me celebrate a birthday dinner. I will always remember her kindness and warmth. The stars of my meals have been the seafood dishes such as the octopus, scallops, and even the burger on a soft bun were all delicious! The ambiance of Bar Mar is upbeat and will surely put you in a good mood if you weren't already in one.

Oysters, octopus, and a hamachi cone
    Keyva C.

I had high hopes for everything and it was mostly met. The octopus was very yummy and I really enjoyed the sauce, the crisp of the skin on the octopus was enjoyable. The oysters were so fresh and the brine was impressive on both. With that the hamachi cone was very tasty and I could have had a few more. Now the burger was a little disappointing. It was over cooked and that kinda sucked. The service was great and the ambiance is amazing. We sat at the bar so the huge fixture that is above it was very cool to sit under.

Finally made it in to check this place out, you can see the decor from the street. Lucky for me they had a special going on, only for the weekend for mussels in a white wine sauce. Comes with fries that are meant to be dipped in the sauce, so flavorful! I also had the seasonal sangria with brandy, which I'm not usually into cinnamon infused drinks, it wasn't overpowering at all. We had the meat plated as an appetizer, not bad probably wouldn't get it again. The pulled chicken needed just a hint more seasoning comes with a gravy that helps. I'll be back in and trying out their stable seafood items.

Hi Kieran! Yes, you can absolutely come in for dinner.

Is there a tasting menu? If so, what are the portions like?

Yes there is a tasting menu, but everyone at the table has to choose it in order to be able to order it.

How loud is the restaurant over dinner i.e. can you hear the conversation at your table?

Does the restaurant have vegetarian options?

Pescatarian but none of the meals were vegetarian.

Is there a brunch menu, 11:45 reservation?

They don't serve brunch. They are however open Monday-Friday 11:00am-11:00pm and Saturday 3:00pm-11:00pm. Closed Sunday's.

Is it first come, first serve at the bar?

    Yes.

    Is there a dress code?

No dress code. But it’s a nice place so just know that.

    Do they have parking?

They have valet parking available right in front of the restaurant

Does this restaurant have a happy hour?

    No, they currently don't.

We loved Jaleo in DC so I'd like to take my wife here for her birthday. Can I bring our kids who age 14, 15, 16 or is it predominantly a bar?

You should definitely bring them- it's more of a restaurant than a bar.

It was dimly lit inside and there was a guitarist playing music. We decided to do the 3 course Prince Geja's combination. The first course included swiss Gruyère cheese fondue with assorted breads, vegetables and fruits. After that they brought out Prince Geja's combination which was beef, lobster tail, shrimp, chicken breast, and sea scallops which you were able to cook in the boiling hot broth. I really liked how there was 8 different side sauces brought out so you could add some more flavor to the meat and seafood. The last course was chocolate fondue served with marshmellows and a side of fire. It was as if you were making smores because it also came with some graham cracker sprinkles. It also came with some fruits to dip into the chocolate fondue as well. The service was great. It was nice they had a coat check. A guitarist sits somewhere against a brick wall and plays music lightly but energetically. Service is friendly from start to finish and smiles are on everyone's faces. The menu is pretty easy to understand. You can get a three-course meal, or you can get each entree à la carte. You have two fondue candles in front of you, one for the cheese and dessert, and the other for the oil. We chose the three-course meal, and it was delightful. We started with the cheese appetizer. You get a basket of bread and fruit and we chose the seasonal cheese to dip. The oil for our meat was then left to heat, and we received a massive platter of veggies and meats for our main course. We chose the option for all selections of meat and seafood. After trying all the meats, I would opt for the lobster and shrimp. You can also substitute the oil for a broth. I would like to try the broth for next time. In one of the shakers, Gejas makes their own meat spice mix. It's recommended to put on the meats and even the desserts. It's a mix of tangy and savory and was a great compliment to the meal. We then chose the seasonal dessert, a white chocolate with vanilla cookies. Fruit, marshmallows, and churros to dip. We were so full by the time dessert came, but we enjoyed a few bites and took it home. The three-course meal, with five types of meat, came with about 10 pieces of meat. It doesn't look like a lot of food, but it truly is, with the apps, veggies, etc, your stomach will be full when you walk out of here. They also start the entire course with a mixed salad (so technically it's a four-course meal). It was very fairly priced, as well. Initially looking at the prices, you may think it's expensive, but it truly is a value with the amount of food they serve. This was rated as most romatic restaurant in Chicago. Its ambiance gives you the romantic feel, the guitarist adds to the atmosphere, and the staff is professional and friendly. This really was a great place and we enjoyed our time and meal.

I really wanted to like it; this was a nine-year anniversary dinner. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. Not a problem since I was dining with my husband, but I would have preferred my own salad if I was with a less familiar party. The silverware and dishes were works of art in and of themselves, but our table was scratched up considerably. My dessert was presented very creatively - although my husband's was much more straightforward. Dessert was an optional add-in, so a separate bill was brought out for this at the end. PARKING Parking on Halsted on a Saturday night can be a nightmare, and it did take a minute to find street parking. North of the 1800 block is busier because there are several restaurants within a two block radius. Side streets are permit parking after 6pm. Meters on Halsted are $2.50/hr. ATMOSPHERE Willow Room was pretty packed. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and my party of two was seated right away. The restaurant features a full bar, dim lighting and is nice and roomy. They have banquette seating around the perimeter, in addition to tables in the middle. SERVICE Our server, who was very nice and accommodating during our dining experience, came by and gave us our menu's. I had already decided on the RW menu and after review, my friend was interested in the Beef Wellington (not on RW menu). Our server informed us that normally the whole table had to order off of the RW menu if one person does, but said she would check with the kitchen since this was the last day of RW. Luckily, we were able to proceed with ordering from different menu's. FOOD I ordered a raspberry Cosmopolitan. I'm a Riesling/Moscato girlie, but I tasted the Riesling and didn't like it. RW dinner was priced at $60. I ordered: First Course: Caesar Salad (Typical salad, was good) Second Course: Mussels (Tasted fine, came with a baguette) Third Course: Short Rib (Could've been slightly more tender and better seasoned. I've definitely had better. Wouldn't order again.) Fourth Course: Orange Ricotta Donuts (Donuts were very good. Three were served, a few more would have been more filling.) My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and: Truffle Fries (Fries were very tasty. I would order again if I went back.) Beef Wellington (The breading was buttery and very good. The beef could've been more seasoned. I wouldn't order.) Key Lime Pie (Was not sweet and had no taste. When our server came back and saw it was uneaten, she offered to take it off the bill. It should be removed from the menu altogether.) The busboys and server were very attentive. Our water glasses were always filled. OVERALL The atmosphere was nice, our server was great. Of all the food we ordered, I would order the truffle fries and Cosmopolitan again. I did leave full and did take my leftover Short Rib to go. Main dishes needed more seasoning.
