A definite must visit music themed, whiskey and cocktail bar in Oakland. They have speakers for sale (I believe) and cool cocktails. A friend and I came here on a Saturday night and there was about a 30 minute wait, but we were allowed to order drinks while waiting. There is very intimate lighting, lots of people on dates here, and they do not take song requests!

Cute cocktail/vinyl bar with super chill vibes. The atmosphere is cozy and perfect for relaxing with a drink while listening to good music. The cocktails were delicious and well-made, though a little on the pricey side. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Definitely a great spot for date night or a casual night out with friends!

We stumbled across this place during a walk and decided to grab some drinks. I liked how the place has a speakeasy vibe. Dim lit atmosphere and enjoyable music. I loved the decor. My favorite is the wall of vinyls. There were stools, chairs, sofas, and tables. The staff were friendly and attentive. They have a nice list of refreshments. Definitely a nice place to relax and have drinks.

What a beautiful place to have a drink! I was super happy with my visit to Bar Shiru. First of all, the vibes of this spot are completely immaculate. You definitely feel 10 degrees cooler in here. From the dark moody lighting, tons of vinyl on the wall, beautiful people, everything was stunning. Definitely bring your ID since they will check at the door, once you're inside, you definitely feel like you stepped into your older brother's cool friend secret hideaway. Drinks were great and there was so many to choose from. I can't remember the drink I got but it was served up in a cute glass and was delicious. The DJ was fantastic and played a ton of old and new school hits. I think this qualifies as a "listening bar" so cool. Totally great trip to Bar shiru! I will, without a doubt, be back.

Service is amazing here! We came here for the first time and it was lovely. The space has great decor and there are so many records. We tried moonglow, lucky spring, and actual proof. I ordered moonglow not knowing it's a very intense drink, so had to order actual proof as backup. They're very accommodating and can make any drink sweeter, so I opted for that. Actual proof is very refreshing with a nice citrus flavor! It seemed to be a popular drink since other folks also ordered it. Moonglow has a lot of complexity to it, and it's concentrated (no ice). Lucky spring was very citrus forward with some bitter notes, but we couldn't taste the guava. We also got free pretzels to munch on! This spot makes great cocktails and they also have a sister bar and restaurant called golden palm nearby. Worth trying this spot for good vibes and delicious drinks!

We stopped by on Sunday right at the tail end of their "Silent Sunday" event, which runs from 4:00-5:30 p.m. It was such a cool experience to see a bar that was fairly full yet completely quiet, allowing you to appreciate the records, atmosphere, and overall vibe in a different and more intentional way. One thing to note is that shaken cocktails aren't available during the silent hours, so I waited a short while for the event to end before ordering. I tried two specialty cocktails, and both were beautifully prepared, well-balanced, and delicious. Overall, Silent Sunday made the visit feel especially memorable, and I'd definitely come back for the unique atmosphere and thoughtfully made drinks.

Definitely the best listening experience not just in the Bay Area but might be in the country . Being in vinyl and having a basic understanding of what it takes to set up a Hifi listening bar, they are serious about it and not just gimmicky or wanting to just get on the trend train and cash on it. The staff are serious and knowledgeable and they focus on not just good cocktails but on your overall experience. Love their concept of no talking sundays and wish to see it more esp. in Boston area. The vibe makes you calm and much needed a lot of times. Did I mention their cocktails are really good and even with happy hour they took care of making it with same precision and care which again is missing from a lot of businesses. Bar Shiru, you are awesome and I'll definitely be back next time am in town, even if it is SF and not Oakland.

Spent a lovely Valentine's Day here! Walking into the bar felt like entering another world. It is so tasteful, chill, and intentionally designed. The lighting, carefully crafted menu, and the live DJ mixing makes it an experience in itself to be there. We were lucky to have a short wait on a Saturday night. I saw a lot of small groups, which is more fitting considering the size of the place. The noise level was not too loud. The service was nice. They took our photos and refilled my Owala when I asked. :) I got two gin-based cocktails. Both were STRONG. I'm a big fan of gin, and these tasted sharp at first, but mellowed into their notes/other ingredients once you swallow. It is definitely a very slow sipping type of vibe. Freezer Martini (junipero gin, dry vermouth, shio koji, olives) - I got this as an olive lover and because I wanted to try shio koji! This cocktail is so savory. As a savory girl, it was a delightful twist on a classic drink. Moonglow (gin, cardamom, jasmine, mango eau de vie, lillet, saline, crème de cacao, amaro rinse) - This drink has the most beautiful notes! The gin is sharp at first, but you can smell and taste the fragrant notes after it subsides. I haven't had any gin drink quite like this. I loved how the menu has its sound systems on the back and a short biography too. Overall, this has got to be one of my favorite bars in Oakland! It brought our night out to another level.

Checked out Bar Shiru for the first time and I enjoyed the jazzy, low key , chill atmosphere. A quick tip on seating: if you can, avoid the window stools. They are a bit uncomfortable since the stools lack back support, the tables are very low and narrow. I moved to a different seat as soon as one became available, which made the experience much better. Regarding the drinks, they have a wide selection Japanese liquors, wine, cocktails, etc. I tried the Roku Highball, but unfortunately, it felt a little watered down. A proper highball should be effervescent and highlight the spirit, but the ice/soda ratio here felt a bit off during my visit. Despite that, I really enjoyed the cozy ambiance, music and interior. Definitely recommend for a chill night out in Oakland!

Such a cute cozy vibe bar Low lights, smooth music, and the kind of cozy vibe that makes you want to sip slowly and stay longer. The music was soulful without being too loud, perfect for chatting and people-watching. Drinks were solid and the atmosphere felt intimate and charming. Service was excellent and quick. Definitely a sweet spot for a relaxed night out.

Now that I've been here a number of times, I'm thinking this place isn't hitting its potential, and it has incredible potential. I've observed that it technically isn't a listening bar. It's pretty much a bar with a most excellent sound system that plays vinyl. That alone is a lot to appreciate. Also, as is somewhat common when it comes to music appreciation, it feels a bit male centric. I have to say that this was the first time I'd "fell in love" with a business. That's why my review is so wordy and impassioned. I'm super into music and I love the concept and the look of the place! I was expecting it to be my haunt. I'm a bit heart broken that it ended up not being a fit for me (plus I'd made a bit of a fool of myself by getting a crush on one of the bartenders, but that wouldn't have made a difference if I still loved the over all experience here, as I'm a bit of a nutty personality anyway, ha, ha...). I hope that as this business grows it finds its sweet spot. I don't think it's there yet.

This is a cute place to grab a drink with a friend or date night. We came here without a reservation and were able to wait for a table while seated at a mini bar with stools. I tried the spring rain and the spellbinder. Both were strong, had very different taste profiles and were worth the try! The ambiance was really nice, it's a bit dark in there but definitely had a fun vibe with records playing. Service was pretty quick and our server was very kind and attentive. All in all great vibe, would come here again.

My friends described this as a "hifi audio" bar and when they text me a link to see if I wanted to join I immediately said yes. It's a very convenient 5 minute walk from the 12th street Bart station and Fox Theater is only 3 minutes from here. We came at 5 pm and it was very easy to get seating for 5 people, by the time we left at 7:30 is was totally full. Interior is so well done! The wall opposite to the entrance is a wall of vinyl and on the right side is a DJ booth where they spin actual recordS. The day we were there the owners of Moonglow were DJing and helping at the bar. Design is amazing, it feels inviting and relaxing and is conducive for drinking, listening to jazz, and enjoy hours chatting with friends and meeting new people. Actual Proof: toki whiskey, lemon yellow chartreuse, vermouth, and pandan. Good way to start the evening. Refreshing and light. Moonglow: gin, cardamom, jasmine, lillet, aquavit, cacao crème, saline, Amaro. Heavier drink, loved it. I'll always associate the taste of lillet with a Vesper and when mixed well it's one of my favorite cocktail bases. They don't serve any food, they do have $3 mini pretzels during happy hour and that's what ended up having for dinner. In hindsight I would have grabbed some fried chicken from Gus and eaten it before heading to the bar.

The appetizers they served this evening.

Ask the Community - Bar Shiru

    Are kids allowed to?

There are not. We are a strictly 21 and over establishment due to our liquor license type.

Are you open on Presidents' Day (2/19/24)?

Yes! It’s also Nina Simone’s bday so we’ll be featuring her music during our Monday Night High Fidelity Listening Session starting at 8p 😀

Hi, are service dogs allowed? Thanks!

I know it says it on their website, but is the vaccination policy still true as of today? Someone mentioned taking in a negative test, however their website seems very clear that one would not be enough. Thanks!

I was there last week and they are requiring proof of vaccination.

Do you offer any non-alcoholic drinks?

    Yes, they do!

    Are reservations required?

Is this a good starting/ happy hour spot before dinner or more of a late night place on the weekend?

Great starting spot. Really great ambience for conversation, unique cocktails and good vibes all around. If you have a larger group, reserve a spot. Though I have to admit I've never been there late night.

Are dogs allowed since there isn't a kitchen?

While we love animals, unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets due to the nature of our space. Thank you for understanding!

We were stoked once we realized we had made it in 15 minutes before happy hour ended. But service was sooo slow. I understand there was one bartended working at the time but they really took their time, not meticulously crafting drinks, but rather talking to a friend. We contemplated going somewhere else when the bartender finally came to take our order, just before happy hour ended..sigh of relief! We made the cut off! We opted against the empanadas as we could see the cutting board in the kitchen area had a jacket on top of it. Well..the bartender slowly made our drinks, while still talking, then rung us up..just a few minutes past 6 and charged us full price. Lackluster customer service. Then, the drinks themselves were just bad..not balanced - one too sweet and syrupy in consistency; the other too bitter. This place used to be great but maybe they changed ownership. Used to see the owner here frequently working the bar. Now, I'd recommend Bocanova in the area instead - their happy hour also goes til 6, their drinks are top notch, service is pretty good, and you can get good food from the kitchen.

It was roughly around 7 pm on a weekend, so there were not that many people yet. My friend and I took a good minute to see which drinks we wanted, and finally decided on the NSFW. To our surprise, it was already sold out. So we just chose our second option, and that too was sold out. There weren't anything else that intrigued us so I just went with the Penelope. That could be good right? Seems like their signature drink but the drink was just okay - nothing too spectacular or any defining factor to it. On top of that, it took forever for our drinks to be made. I appreciate the friendliness of the staff, but man were they chatty with the other customer. I don't mind it, but to stop making the drink to chat every 15 seconds kind of hit my nerve a bit. This is probably why my drink tasted a bit watery because the ice has already melted from the constant pauses to make the drink. I believe this is just an unfortunate one-off experience since this bar gets a lot of customers on most days.

The bartenders were also amazing. For as busy as it was tonight, they did an outstanding job! What made this potentially 5-star review downgraded to a 3-star review was because of my interaction with the KJ here tonight, right after the karaoke league competition. When the karaoke queue was finally open to the public after the competition, I signed up for just one song, and I looked at the KaraFun queue and saw my song at 8th (#8) in the rotation. I looked at the queue again a minute later, and my song was suddenly at #10. I looked again a few seconds later, and my song was suddenly at #14. And then, a few seconds later, it was at #16. I went up to the KJ to ask him what was going on, and he said that he's just making a living, and if people tip him, they get moved up on the queue. Being a KJ myself and being part of a KJ team in the Bay Area, we do accept tips at our shows, but we don't move people up even after getting tipped. We get tipped by merit, by giving our singers their rockstar moment. Tips just come with the show and everyone's hard work. So, at this Legionnaire Saloon tonight, I felt disrespected. Before I found out I was being moved down from the queue, I was planning on tipping the KJ between $10 to $20 just for one song... just because KJs gotta support each other. I would have even waited my turn (at #8 on the queue), because it's just the right thing to do. But after this disrespect, and after the KJ even offered to move me up to #3, I just told him I was leaving, and I walk out. The damage has been done, and I wanted nothing to do with this show. I'll still come back here for drinks, but I will not come back when this KJ is working. 3 Stars. From a potential 5 stars. My two centavos.

So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

Had an amazing experience at Tallboy!…read more Sat at the bar on a sunny weekend and immediately loved the vibes. Bartenders were friendly and seemed to know a lot of the regulars. Can't quite describe it but it didn't feel like an SF bar, felt more open and like a community watering whole. On to the food and drinks. I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Man writing this has my mouth watering... definitely coming back for more dogs, drinks, and vibes!
