I started taking my dogs to Alpine during Covid, so I never did see the inside of the building…read moreuntil about 1 year later. Pros: I chose them because they were located close to my home and it had good reviews on Yelp. I did like Dr. Kelly and appreciated the thorough explanations he gave on the conditions my dogs had. He's the only reason for the 2 stars. I did request him specifically for both my dogs' care in subsequent visits and surgeries but he wasn't ever available. As for the 3 stars taken off, it was a cumulation of a number of things. First, it always difficult to get into and out of the parking lot, as there were only 2 or 3 spaces, and getting out of the lot meant a blind spot when pulling out due to the cars lining the street. That may sound like a small thing, but not being able to see a car coming as you try to navigate exiting a parking lot presents a real danger. Their office is located adjacent to a very popular Mexican restaurant, so there was always lots of traffic coming and going on that narrow street. Second reason was due to another vet they had at the time (I'm not sure if he's still with them or not as it's been 1-1/2ys since I was last there). He used anatomy terms that seemed very inappropriate for a professional and the final straw was a surgery he performed on one of my dogs that ended up becoming infected due to the poor closure and uneven margins on the incision. The day our guy got really sick was on New Years Day, and of course Alpine was closed. We ended up at VRC in Bend that day. They did some work on his incision and gave us antibiotics and told us the margins weren't aligned well. Thankfully, the antibiotics did the job in getting the incision healed without further surgery, but it sure left a bad impression with the work Alpine's vet had done. Third thing: I was at their office on one occasion, waiting in the parking lot (again, during Covid), and the technicians brought out a dog on a stretcher to a car parked nearby. The dog was obviously still very much under the effects of anethesia and came to just enough to actually lash out at the technicians when they attempted to move the dog into the car's back seat. It was quite an ordeal, with a lot of growling and whining and snarling in what seemed like a lot of pain - but was more likely just the effects of coming out of anethesia under frightening conditions, ending with the vet coming out to administer something to further sedate the dog (at least that's how it appeared). I have never seen anything like it. Both of my dogs were always able to walk out on their own volition after a surgery, even after a knee surgery and a spinal tumor that paralyzed our 70lb dog's back quarter (we used a sling to help get him to the car). Who releases a dog to be picked up when the dog is clearly not ready? I get it, they're not a hospital with round the clock care, but that's no excuse. If they know they can't take care of the dog properly because they're not a hospital and can't keep the dog after normal business hours to allow for the effects of anesthesia to wear off, then send the owners to a 24-hour vet hospital to have the work performed. I don't know the details of that particular case, and was only an outside observer, but it was traumatizing to see it unfold in front of me. Nobody came over to explain what was happening, which would have been helpful, so I was left watching and deciding for myself what was going on. Maybe it was a dog that was being transferred to a hospital for further care. I really don't know, but that was the last time I was at their office before I changed vets.
