Absolutely 0 stars. I booked an appointment online for a haircut and was extremely disappointed with the quality of work and outcome. The haircut began with pain from clippers pulling my hair and scalp and throughout the entirety of the cut. I got shaved on the back of my neck and no aftershave was applied at all just scrapped my skin with a dirty towel leaving me bleeding and in burning pain. I will not come back here ever and do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I like this place in general for a quick cut, nothing fancy or special. I like you can book online but they should put the price before you book. It's a little small/cramped in there but usually ok. Parking is ok but it is located on the other side of the shopping center. I do not think they have sinks so you can't get a proper shampoo afterwards which is kind of lame. Maybe you can, I'm not entirely sure how/if they offer that. Also they absolutely need a better way to tip. I am not downloading and hooking my bank account info to Venmo just to give a barber a tip. And I do not carry cash anymore. Time to get with it or your poor barbers will not be getting tipped. read more

Make sure you confirm your appointment. I made an appointment online, left my credit card and everything. After a two week wait to get the haircutter I had been told about, I was very excited to get my long overdue haircut. When I got there, I was told That they had no record of my appointment. They told me I could see the person I wanted to see in three weeks or come back and see somebody else in a couple of days. Been coming here fir years, but recently prices have started to vary a lot depending on the stylist. I asked today how much each stylist charges and they couldn't tell me. So yes, you can get a good cut but don't eecpect to know how much it will cost beforehand without asking each stylist individually, it might cost twice what you expect. read more

Very particular about who I allow to cut my hair. Been to too many barber shops over the years in different cities trying to get a proper 'fade' thats modern/adult, not a silly skin fad with no style or proper transitions. If you go to a real barber, you simply have to give them an idea of what you want, but the latitude to let them put their own slight adjustment so it works for your head of hair and face shape. Thats the test, trust. Today, I showed Jamal a photo of my best haircut to date and said 'generally this is what I'm going for, but do your thing'. End result, best haircut of my life, test passed WAY beyond expectations, let the artist work! Noone else is gonna touch my hair, I found my guy. I understand that it is a challenging time for business impacted by changing Covid regulations. However, I expect a level of courtesy from a business when you have an appointment that they know in advance will be impacted. I was scheduled for a beard trim today. Of course, the mask must be off for an effective beard trim. I arrived only to be told that they will only do a neck trim on the part not covered by the mask. That is utterly useless. They reached out to confirm my appointment two different ways. They surely could have applied the same diligence to warning a return customer before they drive 30 minutes to get to the appointment. I won't support a business that doesn't respect my time as much as theirs. read more

Take your garden variety Supercuts, add champagne & hot cider to the waiting area, triple the price, and you have Barber Lane. Or at least that was my experience. Yesica was late for my appointment, rushed me out in a little over 15 minutes (well ahead of the allotted time), and the result was easily the worst cut I had in years, with the little hairs from the sloppy cut bothering me all afternoon on my person. She was friendly, give her that. Too bad I'm not here for champagne and chit chat. Disclaimer: I haven't been to a super cuts in over 3 decades (not since I was a teen), but I imagine it's something like my terrible experience here. read more

I just moved back to Marin from Los Angeles, where in LA there are a Ton of barber shops. In Marin there are very few TRUE Barber Shops. IF you don't see straight razors, it IS NOT a barber shop! Barber Lane has straight razors. I walked into Barber Lane, and was greeted by the receptionist with a smile, and a warm welcome. The shop has amazing decor, and a true barber shop feel to it which other shops in Marin have TRIED to create. Barber Lane has mastered it. Which makes the experience that much more enjoyable. The best part about Barber Lane is Jamal! I don't let anyone cut my hair except for my barber in LA... So trusting a new barber was very hard for me. Jamal not only gave me an amazing cut, he made me feel comfortable. Anyone who knows me, knows me for my haircuts, Jamal is now my go-to Barber! He always is so positive and upbeat! I was having a tough day today, and after getting my fresh cut, and having great conversation with Jamal.... I'm back in a great mood, and ready to tackle the rest of the day! Booked an appointment in person and explained I didn't know what my son wanted, but that it was a birthday present for my son that would just be in town for a few days. Subsequently I tried to leave messages twice about wanting a haircut and a shave. Got there on time and was told he would only get a haircut. I explained that it was his birthday present and I wanted to treat him to something special. That I'd called numerous times etc. No dice, no tip. I will never go back there again. Went for n there Sent $60 on a straight razor shave that took 30 minutes and I could have done better shave myself. The guy left hair in my face all scruffy and not nice and smooth. I do not recommend this place for shaves there are better places out there. I just hope they give better hair cut then they do shave. This is all after I did some research and reading reviews. I also looked at there menu and it said it came with a massage never got one. They also ran out of hot towels so the guy had to soak it in hot water right before I sat in the chair. read more

Jamal was totally awesome! He was the most professional barber I have ever seen. I told him to do his magic, and I really appreciated how he explained everything to me. This place was very nice - my only suggestion is that I wish they would wash my hair after then it would be easier to go back to work. Rubin, a way personable guy flashing a big grin (so what's up with these big grins...Oliver first, now Ruben...who's next?), greeted and checked me in. Before I could turn around, Jamal extended a warm greeting, welcoming me to his chair. I've been working on growing my hair out, but still love sporting one of Jamal's low razor fades. Believing a picture is worth a thousand words, Jamal and I chatted as I showed him an image of the occipital drop razor fade I was aiming for. Once again, Jamal did not disappoint; not only did he crush the cut I wanted, he easily could teach a masters class in straight razor shaving...truly amazing! Barber Lane WAS great.. They just lost one of their best barbers. If you read all the reviews, they talk about Nicky Bangles. The guy is a genius! So here's the reason for the 1 star.. Last weekend I called to make an appointment for my husband. We knew that Nicky would be moving to some other salon soon but he needed a haircut ASAP. They made the appointment. The day before the appointment I got a call saying that Nicky was no longer with them. When I asked where he worked now they said they think he moved to SF which I knew was a lie. They also had no problem fitting me in that day with the person I was talking to. A text to a friend who also sees Nicky and we find out which salon he's at and I make the call.. He was able to fit us in that day. He said that as soon as Barber Lane found out he was leaving they fired him. Umm.. Looks like an attempt to steal his clients. ANYWAY... We found him and he did an amazing job. We will continue to see him in Mill Valley. I wouldn't have posted a review like this if Barber Lane wasn't so unprofessional to begin with. I've been coming here for about a year now. They did a good job following covid safety protocols and Ali is a solid hairdresser. Would be great if they let you tip using your credit card but other than that all good. Slightly on the expensive side but Marin is pricey. read more

An update with a new cutter and scene: Warning: if you go here, confirm that you are NOT the last appointment of the day. It turned out I was the last cut of the day and they really wanted to get out of there. They asked me to pay during the cut so they could close out....fair enough, but after 15 minutes in the chair, the cape came off and he was practically out the door. When I asked for more to be cut off the top, the cape came back on and choked me. Yes, you read that right! So he lightened up a bit, trimmed a bit more, and that was it. After showering that evening, it became clear that the two sides were not even; not even close. One side, the hair was below the ear line and the other side, above. It was horrific. And I will NOT be going back to barber lane....ever. The back story: I typically only cut my hair when i have to, a business trip or special occasion. Sometimes, those instances creep up on me and this was one of those. My main man was out of town (see other review) and I was stuck. I had gone to barber lane (and liked them) before so I thought they would be my back up. That turned out to be a very serious mistake....which I will not make again. read more

Finding a great barber is tough- in Marin it's tougher. Your choice is mainly SuperCuts and HotClips, or whatever they're called. Having said that, Barber Lane is GREAT. The atmosphere is very relaxed and conversational, the stylists are really skilled, and the price isn't absurd. Yessica's cut my hair the last couple times and they've been really enjoyable experiences. She did a great job with, frankly, pretty vague instructions and is a blast to spend an hour with, which is really what matters. read more

Nicky is so good and reliable, yet so hard to book, that I kept my appointment after breaking my nose before going to the hospital. I sat there with a bloody towel while he chopped away. True story. It was a Saturday morning, when I always get my cut, after my basketball game. That morning I took an awful elbow on a rebound. Blood was everywhere. I knew my nose was broken. I called Nicky to see if I could reschedule. But it was impossible to find a time that worked. So I did what I had to do. I drove over there, and got my cut, before going to the hospital. He's that good. It took my 5+ tries to find a barber to replace my loyal barber I used in New York for 7 years before I moved out here. But I finally found him. read more

REMARKABLE experience at Barber Lane! I recently celebrated my wedding in Marin County, and I started the big day by arranging a hot towel shave for me and my best man. Kelly is the lead for hot towel shaves at Barber Lane, and she is awesome! Leading up to the wedding, she explained the process. Talking to her put me at ease, since it was my first time receiving this type of shave. It takes a lot of faith to try something new on your wedding day, but Kelly exuded positivity and trustworthiness. She even re-arranged her weekend schedule to accommodate my tight wedding day timeline. Simply put, she went above and beyond. All in all, I loved my Barber Lane experience. Not only was the shave deeply relaxing, the atmosphere was incredibly refreshing. Lounging in classic barber chairs, listening to Sinatra tunes, and enjoying quality conversation set a comfortable and confident tone to the day. It's all pretty much been said but... We recently moved to the area and, like a lot of guys, was NOT looking forward to finding a new hair stylist. Everybody says "they're the best" and you end up with a round ball with hair. I was shopping at Marin Country Mart a couple of weeks back and asked one of the guys at Union Made who cut his hair. He just shot a glance over his shoulder and said, Nicky. I didn't realize Nicky was in the next room. Went in, met him, scoped the place out......totally cool vibe. Nice, gentlemanly place that even does real straight razor shaves. They even have those old leather barber chairs. Well, I made an appointment, went in and man, was I in good hands. In fact, Nicky said that. With extensive training at Sassoon in NYC, his technique and, uncanny ability to read your hair, I bounced out! Everyone was so damned friendly too. Go. read more

While I haven't had a cut from anyone else on staff, they are all incredibly friendly and inviting. Great service, great atmosphere. Can't ask for much more than that. Amazing. I have just had my 2nd haircut from here and they both have been two of the best haircuts in recent memory. Before I was a frequenter of Great Clips and the like, but it always seemed to be hit or miss with both the haircut and the hairdressers. Nicky has been cutting my hair and not only is he a great hair stylist, he is enjoyable to talk with! He took what I wanted and tweeked it a bit to make it more flattering for my head shape. Aaaammmaaaazzzziiiinnng! The only thing is that I would categorize them as a $$ or $$$. Closer to a $$ than a $$$ though. read more

I wrote a one star for this place a couple years ago based on the price, level of customer service and the fact that the guy that cut my hair was noticeably drunk. I removed the review upon the request of the manager when he told me they had fired that individual. I thought I'd give it another try today. I got a cut that is mediocre at best. I told her my sideburns were uneven and she said with attitude that she wasn't finished. Then she made them worse. I'll have to fix that with a razor at home. I ask her to clip off some wild hairs she'd missed, a bit more attitude. The topper is that they don't accept credit cards for the tips. I handed her a $20 and asked for change. Doesn't give me a lot of options and things pretty highly of herself and this crappy cut to hand me two tens to tip on my $40 haircut. Won't be back again. Good luck. read more
