So there's not much left to work with on my head. And given the age on my face, there was no way for Anthony to make me look better. Just not so bad. And he managed to do that. A precision cut! He managed to find all of the hair that would no longer grow on my head, sprouting other places north of my shoulder and trimmed that up. Anthony was kind and good natured. And the rest of the crew of barbers were highly focused on their customers and worked as a team cleaning each other's workstations if their hands were free. I normally go to The Shop for my haircuts, but they happened to be closed that morning, so I popped into the Downtown Barbers. I'm always a bit intimidated to go to a new shop, where they don't know me, because sometimes, barbers are reticent to work on women and provide us with the same service at the same price they would charge men. José greeted me as I entered and was happy to provide me with the type of short haircut I requested. He was so skilled at asking exactly what I wanted, right down to what # guard I preferred. At each juncture, he checked in with me, to ensure he was meeting my needs. At the same time, he was friendly and inquisitive about me and my family. I appreciated knowing he genuinely cared, not only about the shape/style of the haircut, but also, about my experience as a woman there. I moved to San Rafael 6 weeks ago. In the last 4 years I've moved 3 times and the hardest thing for me has always been finding a new barber. I had one for years but I kept moving further away from him and needed to find local talent. That didn't happen when I was in Santa Rosa. In fact my last cut in Santa Rosa was horrific. However, I took a chance and stopped in this evening and asked if they could take a walk-in. Hugo was my barber. His attention to detail and listening to what I wanted was spot on. He fixed the debauchery of my last haircut. He even said, yea dude your hair was jacked lol! Totally happy with this shop and of course I'll be coming back. I never leave reviews but this experience was just bad especially for the price. All i asked for was a low taper fade, and to take a little weight off the sides and back of my hair. The taper was ok its decent, but everything else was horrendous. The barber simply eye balled cutting the rest of my hair and now the left back side of my hair is longer than both my right side and front of my hair. I said it was ok to take a little tiny bit of the front but of course he took way to much off, again just eye balling it. The portions of my hair is a complete nightmare with every single side so uneven and unbalanced. I cannot believe I paid $60 for this and even left a tip. read more

Just got back and tried to find a last minute barber. Called a few locations, I forgot it was a holiday, but I was able to stumble on Downtown Barbers. They were able to squeeze me in 20 mins, walk in and originally were going to meet with Miguel. I arrived and Henry was the man who took care of me due to sudden last minute arrangements. I grew my hair out a bit and when I told him what I wanted, he listened and made some suggestions. The result was amazing. I live across the bridge but I'm willing to make the drive to go back and visit this store and have him work on my hair. I didn't even realize that he was the owner till I sat down and home and looked at his business card. He is humble, friendly and welcoming, all the barbers were. Just got a classic / straight razor shave for the first time here. Also got my first ever experience being waxed (got my ears waxed)!!! Vinny was awesome!! He did my shave in various stages. The warm and cold compresses were great. His attention to detail is awesome. He took his time - took a good 50 minutes!! Then I asked him about my ever and fast growing ear hair . Because he had put me at so much ease already with a straight razor shave, when he offered to wax my ears, I decided to take the plunge. I warned him I had never ever done any waxing so if I scream he shouldn't be shocked. Luckily there were no screams or tears; just some wincing!! I highly recommend coming here.
