There's a guy Luke who's been working here for years and makes a good drink with a good attitude. He's a staple of the place. It's a nice neighborhood joint with reasonable prices, a pool table, a jukebox, and loyal customers. It's been owned by the same person for a while and the employees are home-y. T and I had no plans on seeing each other, but somehow got together and went out wibbly and wobbly throughout the night. T wanted to check this place out and so we ended up coming here to end our night. When T mentioned Barfly to me...I couldn't remember why this place sounded so familiar to me. It finally hit me today, that this is the bar that someone wanted to take me on a first date. I remember I looked it up on Yelp and it categorized this place as a Sports Bar - I am sorry fellas, but this is not the place to take your first date. I ended up telling the dude No, I don't do Sports Bar and don't do beer. Surprisingly, this place actually serves margaritas. I couldn't drink anymore, but I still managed to sip on T's margarita and pretty good for a low key bar. Didn't want to upset the eager for tip waitress, so we ended up sharing a plate of sliders. There's a thousand bars in NYC and this is one of them. My wife and I stopped in for a beer and to rest our feet mid afternoon. Looked more promising from the outside. The '80's rock was blasting. Came close to walking back out, but we were already off our feet. Not a great selection of tap beer for what's out there these days, closest thing to interesting was Lagunita's. We left before finishing emptying our glasses, and were disappointed to see what appeared to be better beer options just a block further down. read more

Pool table is great; well maintained, only a dollar per game (and there's a machine to get change), good competition, the house rules are APA league as opposed to stupid bar rules, the poles that get in the way of certain shots give me an opportunity to test my one-handed pool skills. Jukebox has good music that most do not have (like Blind Guardian). Outdoor seating! Food is delicious (e.g. mac and cheese). Great service. It's not loud, so one can actually have a conversation with other people without having to yell or pretend you hear what others are saying when you really don't. read more

I came here for happy hour with a couple of college friends. This is a no frills bar with plenty of TVs airing. We shared nachos and the beef empandas. I had a couples of Guinness my friends had Redd's apple cider. I was able to get a free engraved Guinness glass but I gave to one of my friend. So, actually she got 2 glasses. This is a good place for a simple happy hour just don't expect anything extravagant here. Our waitress was very attentive and checked up on us often. read more

Came here on a Sunday around 6pm. It was pretty crowded, there was a pool tournament and the masters on. FOOD: We only got appetizers. We ordered wings, nachos, mac and cheese, and fries. Everything came out super quickly and was pretty good. The mac and cheese was by far the best. The fries and wings were standard- no complaints. The nachos were okay, I've had better. ATMOSPHERE: Dive bar. There are pool tables in the back and booths on the side. There is plenty of seating and standing area. I love Barfly and have been coming here for more than 10 years. I have seen all kinds of staff. There are staff that thrive here and staff that don't cut it! For the record, Rachel is "Thebomb.com" She is so awesome because she is attentive to the customers, does the job with a smile on her face, and works well with the other staff. I have passed by Barfly a GAZILLION times, but I finally came in when a friend was having an unofficial get together there on Christmas. I drank like a fish, bought drinks for others, and order some food and my tab was probably around $41!! Best of all, we all got to play pool, catch up, take pictures and even sing Christmas songs. The staff was super friendly, nice and HONEST. Why do I say honest? Because I left my Burberry scarf behind and my debit card, and they didn't overcharge me and actually put my scarf away. The sliders were pretty good, however, we did ask them with bacon and cheese. Can't really go wrong there. Also, I really liked the chicken tenders. I'll definitely be coming back. Our experience here was not great. We had a group of 4 (which later grew to 6) seated at a booth here. Our server was awful. She went ahead and took the first round of drink orders no problem. When my friend mentioned that it was my fiance's birthday and if they did anything special for birthdays, she said, sarcastically and with attitude, "Well, I could sing Happy Birthday..." Not funny, girl. She brought back a pitcher of oktoberfest ale, which would have been delicious if it were not warm and kind of flat. Few things in this world are worse than a beer that is not ice-cold. Underwhelmed by our drinks, we requested some waters the next time we managed to flag our server down. I must note that she was nowhere to be found for most of our visit; incredibly frustrating because we had to ask several times for our waters with several minutes of playing "where's waitress" in between each request. When she finally came by, she had only a couple glasses of water - not enough for our whole party - and a complimentary birthday shot of who-knows-what probably to try to make up for the poor service. After we finished our drinks, we paid our tab (after having to search for this lady AGAIN) and left a small tip. The only upside to this place is the prices. Avoid this place unless you enjoy warm beers and want to experience some of the worst service in the city. read more

How do you review a place objectively that you've been to about 100 times? You just cant. That said, I love Barfly, and I've owed them a good review for years now. It is ye olde faithful for me in the area. Never lets me down. Yelp reviews should be based on how well a business executes its concept, and Barfly does this perfectly. It is not trying to be fancy. Don't expect an extensive list of craft brew or gourmet food. It is what it is--a solid little inexpensive watering hole with decent, satisfying grub. I laughed audibly at the reviewer who gave two stars because the "artichoke dip was not impressive." Really? What is wrong with you? Take a step back. The best thing about Barfly is that it's CHEEEEAP as hell. You can come in with 20 bucks and get a sandwich/fries and like 6 beers. Tell me where else in NYC you can do that....yep, nowhere. The staff are all down to earth and super friendly. They have a nice pool table that is appreciated. There is a sweet little patio for outside seating and prime people watching on the corner. All walks of life come here, from the cool ass Asian gentleman with the cowboy hat and shades always playing the video poker machine, to the young ladies grabbing happy hour drinks with their friends, to the detectives in suits on their lunch break, to the semi-pro pool players who bring their own cues and heckle one another. You'd pass by this place 100x before you knew it was there. It's an unassuming bar. There is no 'scene' here, and no pretension - which is why I like it so much. More of a friendly local joint to stop in for a few... The booze here is a bit cheaper than you'd find in the area. The pitchers are a pretty good deal. The food is decent bar food and generously portioned. A decent place to meet up with a group for a causal night of hanging out, because its never so crowded that you can't congregate in one place with your group and sort of take over....I love that. Plenty of TVs for the sports fans, and a juke box for the music fans (the usual juke material - I can always find a few great songs to torture my friends with). There is a dart board as well, and I think there may even be a Monday night dart league. A pool table in the back, and outdoor seating. Lots to offer for such an unassuming place! Great, roomy bar with one of the nicest bartenders I've ever come across. Did you know that the Bass logo is the oldest trademark on record? Okay, I don't even know if that's true, but I don't care - the conversation was good, and for once I was hoping the bartender would swing by for chat more often! I'm just gonna go ahead and give this place four stars because I do come here a lot, and why else would I keep returning unless I didn't like it? (cause it's in the neighborhood). The food is really good, considering where you are (pub food), and the drinks are plenty (pub), and if you want to watch a sporting even, they have multiple televisions which you may feast your eyes on. Even if you want to see the crap teams playing... they're playing here because of the stock this place has taken up with Samsung. There is outdoor seating in the warmer weather, otherwise have a tasty burger, or a healthy wrap/salad in a booth. There are plenty of seats at the bar, and high tables as well, so take your pick. The staff are all very friendly and the place is kept clean and is conviently located on the corner (so when i used to forget where this place was, before i frequented it, it was easy to find). yeah... i like this place, in a local hang out kind of a way. read more

Full disclosure - I'm biased. Lived above the bar in the early 90's and haven't stopped coming back since. It's a second home with plenty of family. Barfly is your average neighborhood watering hole and ended up being a good place to watch the results since we were able to snag seats front-and-center to the TVs lined up above the bar. Even when the place got really full, she did her best to make sure everyone was being served and she was as friendly and pleasant as if there were only a couple of tables she had to wait on, instead of at least 10 or 12. read more

My friend and I stumbled across this place in search of brunch. Although it was not quite as trendy as most brunch spots, we were very happy. It was a cozy and clean bar restaurant. The service quick and the food was delicious (I got the huevos rancheros and couldn't finish). Brunch is $11 and includes one drink (bloody Mary, mimosa, or screwdriver). After that those drinks are on special for $4. I will warn that our drinks did not appear that strong and we ordered several rounds, but even with 3 rounds (including the free one with our meal) the bill came to about $25 with tax and tip. The beer, food and service were odd. That said, they were odd in the respect that the beer was served at the right temperature and the food was good, and the service was nice and this is supposed to be a respectable sports bar ;) I came, I liked, I had their appetizer special and it was the best vegetarian dumplings I have ever had in my life. That said, I have not had very good dumplings in the past, so take that as you will. Food was good, fries were good, bathrooms were decent, waitstaff appeared friendly but a bit overworked (she was rushing like the Flash). Little bit pricier than I am used to, but it was NYC, everything was. I'd go again, it was nice. I was a bit confused in the bathroom by the signs by MADD saying to call a taxi / not drive. I come from a city where this needs to be a sign as we don't have taxis waiting at the corner. I start wondering who in NY needs to call to get a taxi from a sports bar. I can only imagine a scenario where someone thinks they are roughing it by heading to a sports bar and leaving their driver at home. 11pm comes about, they realize they're tipsy and unable to see the color yellow due to extremely rare Yellow / Blue colorblindness they see the sign and know what number to call. I live nearby this bar and appreciate it for what it is - a relatively low key bar with a decent menu. I've taken people here for lunch or dinner if we need somewhere really close by, and have only been disappointed by the paninis. But I guess that's what you get when you order paninis from a bar. The beers are CHEAP - I think around $3-4 for mugs/pints, and pitchers start at $12. I love that it's not contingent on Happy Hour, those are just the regular prices. My friend loved the mozzarella sticks and I was very happy with the corned beef sandwich on St. Patrick's Day (the only place in the area that actually still had a bit of room in it). Maybe not where I'd spend a Friday or Saturday night, but it's good for some mid-week drinking and eating. read more

I dig this place. Really mixed crowd of people: Hipster groupies to happy hour after-work professionals. I got there an hour before my friend so I just sat at a table and this cute little blonde girl waited my table. She was super nice and wasn't impatient when I couldnt decide on what to drink. GREAT happy hour. $2 off all drinks as well as other drink specials. It's a really cozy atmosphere but my friend pointed out that the lighting was almost too bright right above the table. Like you see in the pic I posted, there are these cool vine-y trees lit up with blue lights. I think the music they were playing fit the ambiance pretty well. It was alternative rock for the most part. Good music choice, for me at least. Once my friend got there we ordered food. We got the jalapeno poppers and steak quesdillas. We didnt like the Jalapeno poppers because they have cream cheese in them but the quesdillas were great, served with a little bit of guac, tomatoes and sour cream. As expected, our Championship Sunday bar was reserved to the max, but Barfly was able to accommodate our request for a party of eight on the spot. We took advantage of the brunch special, $3 mimosa/bloody mary/screwdriver + food. Lots of TVs, easy sight lines from every seat, just what we were looking for. Bathrooms stayed clean and well-stocked, which isn't always the case at a sports bar for eight hours. Servers were as prompt as possible with refills and food requests, given how many people were there vs the small wait staff. For me, this would normally = four stars for a sports bar. The only downer came at the end of the night. Saints-Vikings went into overtime, so the game ended around 10pm. We finished paying the bill and were saying our goodbyes. One of the server/bus boys comes over, shoves my friend's chair out of the way, and says "Get out, we have to clean." 10pm on a Sunday with an OT game, I understand needing to get the place in order before you close up, especially since we'd just finished paying the bill. But seriously...we just paid over $300, plus a good tip, you could at least ask nicely, you know? I pointed that out and got a smirk in response. Otherwise, this was a cool spot. I'll go back. Came in for the $7.95 lunch. Not bad. The portions are small, but as I'm trying to lose weight, that's a good thing. The beer deficit can easily be made up, as additional small Millers or Miller Lights are only $1. Wait staff is friendly. They made a mistake on my order (I asked for a bacon cheeseburger and got a plain hamburger), but it was such a nice environment I let it slide. It's a good sized place. One of my favorite bars in Gramercy because of the good food and even better happy hour. I've never been disappointed with their fried chicken entrée. For the low price of $10, you can get a hefty chicken thigh and breast, generous heap of mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuit, and coleslaw (not watery at all!) The place can get a little uncomfortable when there's a game of pool and you need to pee. The rosemary fries are good and the spicy fries are curlies! Ive gone to school across from this place for years now and it hasnt changed a bit over those years. Dive bar, friendly service with somewhat meh food. Nice when there isnt too big of a crowd, and Ive seen quite a few SVA kids in there inbetween class changes to grab a quick beer there from time to time. The bar has plenty of TVs for you to catch the game/s from any angle. There is a pool table for you to enjoy if sports isn't your thing. The place was packed and one thing I would have to point out is that this place has a minimum consumption rule per table. We sat at a booth and it was a 3 person and $65 minimum. If you consumed less than $65 worth of food and drinks, your check would be adjusted to reflect that minimum. So just keep that in mind if you decide to come here for a big sporting event. I ordered a spinach and artichoke dip which was amazing. It was one of the best I've tried and the only thing that would make it better would be if it was served with warm soft pita bread. The prices on the menu were very reasonable and I believe a couple of dollars cheaper than other bars in NYC. With that being said, every dish that went by me looked amazing. Would definitely come back here to watch another football or basketball game. read more

I love this place. If I lived closer I would be there more often. Lots of TV's, seating, pool table and a jukebox. What else could be better? I have been there during the day for a meal and at nite time for pitchers and pitchers of beer.
