Dear Owner/Management Team, My fisncé and I are neighborhood residents, and we stopped into Gramercy Ale House this evening (May 5, 2026 at 6:45pm) hoping to enjoy a relaxed trivia night together after receiving some emotional but positive news from the hospital earlier this week. We were genuinely looking forward to a comforting, lighthearted evening in the neighborhood we call home. Unfortunately, the interaction we experienced at the front door left us feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. When we walked in around 7 PM, the hostess immediately asked, "What do you guys want?" in a tone that felt dismissive and condescending from the outset. We politely explained that we lived nearby and would have loved to participate in trivia. We completely understood that tables may have been reserved for groups, and I even offered to pay for additional seats simply so we could have a comfortable evening and we could participate respectfully. Rather than trying to accommodate us in any way -- even minimally -- we were effectively told, "You should just leave." I fully understand that restaurants become busy and that trivia nights require organization and reservations. This letter is not about not getting a table. It is about basic hospitality, kindness, and the way guests are spoken to. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Particularly in New York, neighborhood establishments become meaningful because of warmth, professionalism, and community. Tonight felt like the opposite of that.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What saddened me most was seeing my fiancè visibly hurt after we had come out hoping for a positive evening together. We did not expect special treatment -- simply courtesy and humanity. I wanted to share this directly because I believe owners should know when the tone at the front door is driving people away rather than welcoming them in. If I could give this experience no stars, I would. I came with a visiting friend to check out the neighborhood bars. Bartender was rude and dismissive when I asked if we could order in person since Apple Pay was their only option through an app. Waitress/hostess was equally unfriendly - it was a rainy night and the women's bathroom was flooded, my friend went to give the waitress a heads up and to ask if she could use the men's temporarily, and was met with a rude toned "we know. just walk over it." On top of that, we each ordered only one draft and split a mozz sticks appetizer, and when we found we were unable to close the tab digitally, we were charged an auto-added tip of over 25%. I came here for Tuesday trivia night. If you are coming with a group, reservations are recommended. For parties of two or less, only bar seating is available. They have typical bar food. Nothing super special. We started with the hand cut fries. They were crispy and tasty. We also got the pretzel. The cheese dip had an artificial taste and the mustard was a bit sour, but the pretzel itself was great. It was piping hot, fresh, and not overly salted. They don't have any custom cocktails but do have a bunch of beers on tap. I ordered a tequila soda lime. It was served in a large glass and was pretty strong. Trivia was run through the NYC trivia league. The league has events all over the city. You can choose to join the league or just play for the day. There were six rounds, each with a theme including music, pictures, and a couple in which the questions or answers all included a particular word or phrase. The announcer wasn't super high energy, but it was fun. Winners got a discount off of their tab for the night. It started around 7:40 and lasted two hours. Servers at the bar were super attentive. I live around d the corner and will absolutely never come back. Came in on a Sunday, not very busy, ordered 2 beers and a canned vodka seltzer. One of the beers came with a chunk of mold floating in it from the tap. Asked the bartender for a canned or bottled drink instead as that's extremely unsettling and unsanitary and he said he couldn't without charging the price difference however the price of moldy beer was $9, seltzers $11 but the lowest cost thing he could charge me was $6 (didn't give me a heads up). They were using an online ordering system that was a little cumbersome, but did offer a discount on our drinks. The service was a bit slow despite it being not terribly busy, but I can forgive that. My one annoyance was how everyone's orders came out at different times and by the time the last person got their drink, the first was finished. read more

Was in the city for the show being done by a group called the Three Tremors and with the band being interviewed by Metal Media colleagues at this space, I decided to pop in for supper and drink while they did their thing. This was the first time I've ever popped into the Ale House despite having passed it a few times while on the way to other places in the region. I had to say that I loved the atmosphere and overall vibe of the joint. There was good music playing and the WiFi was free to use for those ever necessary Facebook and Instagram updates. I was ravenous and decided on a pulled pork sandwich and a couple of Stella Artois beers while my friends did the interview. The sandwich was super tasty and so were the fries which had some consistency to them. Not little shoestring fries that we find sometimes. There were quite a few items on the menu that I found appealing so a return is imminent. The prices are in the ballpark of neighboring places and since this is NYC one should not be expecting $1 beers and $.50 wings. Get over it if that is a concern of yours in 2019. The bartender was Taylor and she was friendly and engaging, so kudos to her for being so personable to the customers. As someone new to the pub, that goes a long way. During the visit I even met the owner Steve who talked about old time visit to a club that I also used to patronize "back in the day". I will be sure to pop in to the Gramercy Ale House again and you should let this be the motivation to do the same. read more

I've been living in New York for about 6 years now and I have yet to find a local watering hole more reliable than the Gramercy Ale House. I've spent an almost embarrassing amount of time in this establishment and have loved every second of it. Every time, I have been welcomed with open arms from the managerial staff and bartenders. While all the bartenders are fantastic and never have you waiting for a beer, my favorite is Alyssa. She is a great conversationalist and makes a mean G+T. She is however suspiciously obsessed with Taylor Swift and will make it known within minutes of meeting her. I have also gotten to know Steve, a manager, over the years. A great guy who knows how to run a bar. Whether you're looking for a place to watch football on Sunday afternoon, take part in some trivia on a Tuesday night or make some unsavory decisions at any point on a Saturday, GAH is the place to be. We came in on a cold winter day around 6pm on a Wednesday. There was 9 of us and practically nobody in the bar. The only bartender there at the time poured our shots unevenly and like half of what a normal shot should be. When he poured one shot a little bit more than the others (actually what a normal shot should've been), my friend who ordered said that was a good amount. To which he replied "I bet you like that.." then proceeded to spill alcohol as he tried pouring from that shot glass to the other shot glasses.. they all were still uneven and was just a sip of whiskey in the end. Total rip off. Then my friends that paid with a card find out later they were mysteriously charged $50 for no reason. This place is overpriced and rude. Not a terrible bar but not that remarkable either other than remembering that they are fans of Texas Christian College football. Wait, what? My friends chose the neighborhood and we were at a pricier place earlier, walked by and saw a sign outside advertising $5 draft/$5 wine/$5 wells until 7pm and were sold. It's a pretty good selection of beers but I'm always going to complain if Guinness is your only dark beer, we have a problem. I enjoyed some Lager from Yonkers and then switched to wine. We split an order of bbq and buffalo wings along with truffle fries. All decent. The wings were nice and meaty and the fries were kind of a small bowl for being a $12 value and a side dish but okay. It served its purpose though for just being an average and some-what affordable pub in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out. read more

Came back here as it is preferred bar of my friend's and wanted to further comment on the food now that I have tried the burger and waffle fries. First off, I would like to complement the service. Wait staff was quite attentive with our drink orders and water refills which I greatly appreciated during football Sunday. They also have a sun roof towards the back so it made the barfeel less dark and stuffy. As for the food, the burger was nice and juicy, accompanied by red onion, lettuce, a slice of tomato and a pickle. The burger comes with fries but I asked for waffle fries which they easily substituted. Glad I was able to get it because the waffle fries were plentiful and crisp. Hot on the inside with that great seasoning that usually comes with waffle fries. Overall a great place to watch some football (in which they have multiple games on with their many tvs all over the place), drink some bucket of beers and eat some good decent bar food. read more

Not a bad spot, not a good spot. Only about a third of the taps were in use (see the pic) - and the only offerings were big brewery offerings (aka Blue Point is "craft"). Food was decent pub food and the service at the bar was fine. The kicker was the "convenience fee" charged for using a credit card - not mentioned anywhere on the virtual menu - it is like a $3 stupid tax on a $100 bar tab. I would have been back but the $3 convenience fee will simply make it more convenient for me to go to any of the other 100 bars within a mile that don't try to "secretly" rip me off. Inconvenient indeed (and short sighted - why not just charge an additional $0.20 a beer and not be jerks about taking credit cards - or at least mention on your menu. Bad form. ) read more

Vibes of the place still feels like a sports bar while taking Covid protocols seriously. Outdoor set up and indoor setup are both great. Gramercy Ale House is in a good location, with plenty of East Village inhabitants including NYU and Baruch students. The bar also serves a wide variety of beer but that about sums up this place. It's your average American sports bar, with a bunch of TV screens spanning around the bar. If you're big into sports, they're pretty much showing everything that's playing or played (ESPN History channel or something like that, don't quote me). I had a few beers and burger and fries, and all in all, my experience was lackluster. The burger was something I could whip up in my backyard BBQ grill, I wish the cheese was more melted - you know, like in the McDonald commercials. The fries took the cake, but probably because I do not know how to make fries. The ambiance is lively, but only with the chattering of the bar overhead. Nothing else can really describe this place, the bar lacks of character and just disinterests me from beginning to end. Maybe I'm getting too old for collegiate sports bars. Damn, hello graduation. There are also a ton of smokers who stand outside between commercial breaks. And depending on how close to the bar you sit, your nostrils will be gently wafted with second hand smoke until you decide to move your butt. Today was supposed to be a special Sunday. The boys bantered back and forth in preparation for the big game. This Sunday was for the boys. You could smell the sizzle of chicken wings at the front door. We shuffled the tables together and crowded around the bucket of "cold" beers. And then came the wings, if you want to call them that. I've seen a sickly pigeon with more meat on its bones. A ten dollar bill will get you five wings this Sunday afternoon. We thought a BLT would cure the pang of hunger. Charged a $20 cover at the door, which is understandable. Purchased one beer and was asked if I would like to open a tab. Bar was packed so I said yes. Saw a charge for $50 on my credit card, called and asked about it and was told that that is the fee for not closing out my tab. Have never heard of that, people don't close out their tabs officially at bars all the time, and if anything bars auto charge 20% gratuity, which again is understandable. $50 automatically is outrageous. Didn't see a sign warning of that either. Seems like dishonest billing is common here. Ridiculous. read more

However, the smile and cheer of both patrons and bartenders (Dave in particular) soon showed me the charm of this spot. All you could want on a Sunday afternoon, GAH provides. This a great bar to stop in for happy hour to have a few good Ales from the tap. Martin is a great bartender and it makes him happy to see people talking and interacting without their cellphones...lol. Luckily for me and him I only pulled mine out to invite others to come and meet and he was cool with that. This place is great for people watching and enjoying the weather. In the evening a lot of natural light comes in and if you can get a seat by the window, you're in for a treat. However the bar is very comfortable and Martin is a good guy to chat up. My husband asked what's the name of the beer the woman next to him got, the bartender replied with "I don't know?" So then my husband asked if was a stout beer. Same answer. However, after the boys and I drank about 6 buckets of beer we got the checks and were appalled. 35 dollars for buckets of bud light that only include 5 beers is a SCAM.
