I will start by saying James Leckonby has no moral integrity. I gave James 2 stars because he does…read moreknow how to put pipes together. However! I would not recommend James for any work beyond simple plumbing. Let me explain. Prior to Christmas, 2024 the water coil in our furnace burst shortly after having the furnace serviced (James did not do the service) , leaving our home without hot water and heat. We started seeking recommendations. An acquaintance of ours said he knew James and gave us James' phone number. I called and spoke with James. James came to our home, assessed the situation, and recommended a combi unit. Combi: meaning a combination of heat and hot water. James said he was familiar with combi's and had installed them for others. James prepared a quote to remove the old furnace and install a replacement. My wife and I thought the quote was too high ($12,000), but we felt having no heat or hot water and the fact that it was Christmas and with the weather below freezing we had no choice but to accept. We were afraid not starting the work immediately would cause our pipes to freeze. We signed the work agreement 12/19/2024. James hired two workers to remove the old furnace. Due to the old furnaces weight (cast iron) they decided to break it apart in the basement. In doing so, they left residue on the floor and the steps leading outside that will not cleanup with regular cleaning products. The floor and steps are now covered with cardboard. James installed the combi unit, but could not get it to run. James spent hour after hour trying to get the combi to fire up. Christmas came and went. We had no hot water or heat since mid -December. Due to the cold we were forced to purchase portable heaters to keep the pipes from freezing. On 12/27/24 we called National Grid and asked if they would check their gas feed. A service tech came and verified National Grids gas line was okay. The tech then asked James to check the gas valve in the basement that James installed. When James disconnected the gas line we found the valve was clogged with pipe dope. After removing the pipe dope and reassembling the gas line the combi was able to fire up. Forward , to spring 2025. The combi unit started to get occasional combustion errors. At the time National Grid had been working on the gas lines in the neighborhood. For that reason we considered their gas line work was causing air in the lines, thus the combustion errors. After National Grid completed the gas line work in September the occasional combustion errors continued. It was early October 1 when I contacted James Leckonby to let him know that the the combi was getting occasional combustion 003 errors. I told James they were occasional and we were able to reset the error code when necessary. I said he didn't have to rush over, but that I would like him to check it out in the next few weeks. We had an agreement. On October 16 I called James to let him know that the combi was getting 003 errors constantly and that we had no heat. James became a no show. He would make up excuses why he wasn't available. One time (October 30) telling me , "You"re not my only customer". Finally November 3 James shows up after 8:00p.m. The same time when the combi manufacturers Help Center closed for the day. It was quite obvious James had no idea how to trouble shoot or program the combi. At one point he disconnected a part without first shutting the water off and draining the unit, which resulted in water gushing all over. Well! That night was a bust, but James promised to return early the next day so he would be able to use the manufacturers Help Center. We had previously informed James that my wife had emergency surgery the week before and that I was going to have hip replacement surgery November 7. Therefore, we would not be able to continue to run down the basement to reset the combi. Here we are. As of this writing November 28, James has not returned, has not called and has not responded to text messages.

He then gave me an itemized estimate for what it would cost to replace my unit and told me he could do the job the next day. I found his price to be very fair and agreed to have him do the job. Drains I kind of understand, but I tried to snake one once and it was a disaster. For plumbing needs, I call a plumber. The first plumber I tried came from one of the local Best of the Capital Region polls. And they were fine. But I didn't really like that the fellow who came out to look at the job and the fellow who came out to do the work were different people. Yes, I realize this is how a lot of home service companies work, and probably most consumers are fine with it. I'm fine with it too. I just like Chris better. Every time I've had to call on Chris, he could have taken me to the cleaners. Each problem had a potentially very expensive fix. But every single time, either through hard work, sheer determination, or just a keen eye, he's been able to get me out of the jam for much much less. When we left the area for a few months and had a family renting our house, I knew that I could call Chris and he would take good care of them. And he did. Most recently, we thought our water heater had died. We were prepared to buy one from him. But he told us there was nothing wrong with the heater. The problem was the circuit breaker box. But he knew a good electrician that he trusted. When a person of integrity give you a recommendation, it's wise to listen. And his electrician was fantastic. Prices are reasonable. Service is great. He's a friendly guy. Deeply knowledgeable. Dependable. Trustworthy. Really, I can't say enough good things.

Our AC stopped working during a 90 degree week long heating spell! From my initial call, the System was installed within 48 hours by experienced, knowledgeable, courteous, and professional technicians. This is an incredible turnaround considering we were a new customer! I had mentioned my husband had a disability and did better with AC. Jason, Head Technician, rearranged the company's installation schedule to fit us in ASAP. The day after the initial call, a service call was made by Eric to assess the problem. He explained everything well and measured for a new system. That same day, a proposal was presented by Jason complete with explanation. We signed a contract online. Installation was the next day by Dan, Andrew, and two others. When they completed installing the system, Dan reset our thermostat. He also reset the NEST on my iPhone since I use my phone to change settings on the thermostat. He was thorough and kind. He also showed me what had been installed. They cleaned up very well. In addition, I experienced that their excellent customer service for all staff focuses on clarity. They welcome questions in person and by providing email, text, and phone call access. No ambiguity here. Written copies of proposals and statements are provided for the customer. We highly recommend Albany Mechanical for your heating and cooling systems. Installed a new AC last month (from a different company) and have had zero issues, it's keeping us nice and cool. $12,000 mistake for us and would never recommend them to anyone as they do not back their product or installation. *edit to respond to Albany Mechanical: In regard to the claim about new construction and system design, Albany Mechanical used the wrong set of plans when designing our HVAC system and they are 100% aware of this. The builder initially provided preliminary drawings to obtain a general estimate. However, the final design of our home changed significantly, including both the layout and the addition of more square footage. The updated plans were sent to Albany Mechanical--and we have documentation confirming this. Despite that, the system was ultimately built using the original, outdated drawings, which resulted in an improperly designed and ineffective system. It is also incorrect to state that we only contacted them in 2024, several years after construction. As part of the installation, we had a one-year service contract, during which Albany Mechanical was called out on three separate occasions the first summer due to ongoing issues with the system's performance. Our concerns were raised from the very beginning. While it is true that we reached out again in 2024, those visits were part of continued attempts to address a long-standing problem. During that time, Albany Mechanical brought in a third-party company to evaluate airflow and size of the unit. It was during this process that we discovered they had the wrong plans and provided the third party with the same incorrect plans. When this discrepancy was identified, Albany Mechanical refused to have the analysis redone using the correct plans. Regarding the dehumidification system, this was installed after the fact in an effort to improve performance, as during the first year of use of the system Albany Mechanical adamantly stated there was nothing wrong with it despite our home being 82 degrees when the thermostat was at 73 degrees. The claim that the system introduced outside air during peak summer conditions is completely false. The unit is equipped with an external temperature sensor that automatically closes the outside air intake when temperatures are too high or too low. This statement reflects a misunderstanding of the system's functionality and complete lack of knowledge by Albany Mechanical. While it is true that a clogged filter was identified during one of their service visits, the HVAC system was not functioning properly both before the dehumidifier was installed and after the dehumidifier's filter was cleaned. Therefore, this issue had no bearing on the underlying problem and is just an attempt to make excuses. Finally, the assertion that Albany Mechanical stood behind their work is not supported by the facts. They were made aware that incorrect plans had been used. Multiple independent companies--four in total--confirmed that the system was undersized for the home and despite both of these assertations they refused to take responsibility. Most importantly, after replacing the system with one that was properly sized, we have experienced no issues. The evidence is clear. Albany Mechanical absolutely does not stand behind their work, and based on our experience, we would never recommend this company.
