It's conveniently located just outside Bayfield, making it a great home base for exploring Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. When we arrived, Jennifer, one of the owners, gave us a warm welcome and got us checked in quickly. The campsites are terraced along a hillside, so most have nice views. They aren't perfectly level, but a couple of leveling blocks took care of that without any trouble. The bathhouse has five large private bathrooms, all spotless, along with a convenient laundry room. The campground also has a swimming pond, mini-golf, and some of the most creative themed cabins we've seen in our travels. It's obvious Jennifer and Zach have put a lot of hard work into making this a special place. We really enjoyed our stay, and if we're back in the Bayfield area, we'd definitely stay here again. One nice bonus is that Adventure Club Brewing is just a short walk from the campground. Tucked into the back of an outdoor recreation store, it's a small brewery with a fun, welcoming atmosphere and a large outdoor patio that's perfect for relaxing with friends.

I love state parks, and this one was everything I hoped for and more…read more Visited on a Saturday in August so it was quite crowded, but we still managed to find a parking spot and once we left the parking lot it wasn't too bad. The visitors center is large and clean with lots of information, bathrooms, a gift shop, and places to sit around a fireplace. They were doing a lesson on primitive fire building when we arrived. We unfortunately had a limited amount of time, so we only did the brief hike down the beach and out to Shovel Point, but both were absolutely stunning and I wish we had more time. I'd love to come back someday and hike more and possibly camp as well.

The rest stop area of the state park visitor center was very nice. Picture windows let the outside sunlight in. Vending machines were well stocked, and the washrooms were spacious and clean. The visitor center was large, with an area with exhibits and displays about the history and the natural features of the park. The information desk abuts this area. There's a gift shop that sells souvenirs and last minute hiking/camping items. There's also ice cream and small snacks. If you want to spend significant time outside here during the summer and forgot mosquito repellent, I highly recommend picking up a canister of 40% DEET. You'll definitely need it! Palisade Head was absolutely gorgeous.

I know you can say that about all campgrounds, BUT this one has sites that are really packed close together with water access and others that are in a field across the road from the beach... neither is ideal in our mind. There is a highway close by like all the reviews mention. It wasn't loud from our site, but when we walked the campground it was loud in other parts. We did take note on what sites we would stay in if we went again. I would tell you but then we'd never be able to book them. This is a busy place that is hard to get into even for the not so great sites... That being said, there wasn't people noise. Everyone was quiet and respectful. Fun activities nearby: Hiked to town on the trail to visit the lighthouse. Rented a kayak at the beach and paddled to the lighthouse. Dog swam and froze to death in the lake... Lots of rocks to pick. Everyone is agate searching.

We wanted to come back to the North Shore in the fall after many years of being away. In all our…read moretravels this is still one of the most beautiful areas in the Country. We lucked out with the September weather 60-70 during the day, 60-40's at night. After camping at Split Rock we wanted to try the new RV park, Shipwreck Creek across the highway. The sites were beautiful and large. Our site 308 fit our 35' 5th wheel plus we could have put 2 more 6 person tents on the nearby tent pad. Some sites seem to be RV only and some have tent pads connected as well. The way they cut the sites into the hill side there is privacy at many sites. Some of the sites on the hill in the inner loop have obstructed views of Lake Superior. There is only electric here so it is a dry camping scenario. If you want to use the water in your RV plan to sanitize your fresh water tank ahead of time and you will need to pump water into your tank. Water can be a bit of a walk and the roads are narrow, so there is no place to park near the water stations. We would plan better next time and just pump water into our camper before leaving home. There is no black/grey tank dump station at the park, so you will need to plan a stop in Silver Bay, Two Harbors or Duluth. Split Rock State Park is still a gem of Minnesota to us. We day tripped to Grand Marais, Temperance State Park to see the gorge, Black Sand Beach and Tettegouche State Park. Sliver Bay has the closest grocery store and hardware store. Gas stations and gift shops are plentiful on Hwy 61 as well as the gift shops at the State Parks to find anything to take home. Even though this park is new, there is no internet at this RV park like at Vermillion State Park. That park had WiFi hubs everywhere. Cell service is ok depending on the carrier but if you have Starlink you'll be fine.

When we arrived, I had forgotten it was also a casino - which we honestly care about (and generally avoid due to the noise, etc.). It was a beautiful room, spacious, with plenty of power outlets and comfortable furniture. It was very clean, and the bathroom was also large and looked new. Our room was on the top floor and overlooked the marina - a nice view to wake up to! We walked through the casino just to get a feel, and it was not noisy or smoky - definitely busier in the evening. They also have an on-site restaurant where we enjoyed breakfast one morning. All staff we met were friendly and helpful - and parking is plentiful and free. The town of Bayfield is just a 10-minute drive away with lots of restaurants, shopping, and recreation (kayak tours, boat tours, etc.). Also - don't miss the lovely hiking trail a 10-15 minute drive the other direction in the Frog Bay Tribal National Park.

Bathrooms were clean but the women's was often busy. Not much else you can expect during peak camping season however. Very nice and close access to the beach as well as a nearby candy store. This place is great if you're looking for a nice place in the two harbors/Duluth area, but not looking to raise wild shenanigans. The owner seems to strictly enforce the 10:00 quiet rule time, which was fine with us.
