General - I've stayed here on numerous occasions in 2025 during different times of the year. Some was for work while other times it was with family. Basically, if the price is right, we will stay here. Location - The hotel is located in the bay/harbor area right off of Lake Superior which gives it some very nice views of the surrounding area and wildlife. There isn't much on the island but you are only a few miles away from Superior which offers numerous shops and restaurants. There is a nice little park at the entrance of the island that you can walk to. The trail is nice to walk when the weather is nice out, they have done a lot of native restoration in the area and it is full of wild flowers during that time. Also, go and see the last remaining whaleback boat - the SS Meteor. You can walk around the vessel for free or tour inside for a small entrance fee. Rooms & Building - Let's get it out of the way right now, the resort is older and dated. Is it in terrible condition? No. But it isn't brand new either. The rooms are at least clean and comfortable. It probably depends on what room you get but the rooms I have gotten have always been in good shape and clean. The beds have been comfortable and everything in the room has been in good working order. There are signs of wear and tear inside and outside but keep in mind (especially the outside) that Lake Superior winters are absolutely brutal and beat the tar out of everything in its wake. Amenities - The hotel has a large pool/hot tub area in the middle of the building. The pool is usually heated to a nice temp and the hot tub has good jets. There is a small arcade attached to the pool area. Lots of table seating for group gatherings. Food - There is no free breakfast options available but there is a restaurant/bar onsite. I have never tried it out but I have heard good things from the locals. Vibe - Easy going and super friendly staff. No complaints. Reality vs. Online - Pictures that I saw on their website and online matched the quality and condition of the hotel and rooms in-person. No surprises. Price & Final Verdict - Once again, if the price is right (I normally try to stay here around the $100 a night mark), then my family will choose this place. We have enjoyed our stays here. Although not the flashiest place to stay in the Duluth area, it is one of the more affordable options out there that offers a nice setting and amenities list. read more

This property was probably nice in the 70's but has been neglected since. The construction workers that stay here leave their work boots in the hallways telling you what this location has become. We also noticed lots of construction workers in the parking lots drinking at night. Not a big deal but could be intimidating to some travelers out on a walk or arriving after dark. Maintenance is lacking. The old carrier ac units are noisy and would freeze up regularly. Rooms are older and in a semi maintained state. Old furniture showing wear and definitely not a white glove clean experience. Breakfast is no longer included but available for purchase. This is a property that is right at the point of needing to be demolished vs repaired. Sad as it is a pretty location with the marina and water on two sides. Overall this would be like an interstate Super 8 property for comparison. Adequate for a nights rest but if vacationing with a family I would suggest looking at a nicer property on the Duluth side. read more

We stayed here for the convenience during a Dragon Boat Festival, and overall it was a mixed experience. Pros: -Great location with gorgeous patio views of Lake Superior and the marina. -Large indoor pool with hot tub and sauna. -On-site restaurant with reasonable prices. -Rooms included a fridge and microwave, which was handy. Cons: -Disappointing customer service. -Outdated hotel room with uncomfortable beds and sheets. -Constant humidity throughout the hotel from the indoor pool. The biggest issue came at check-in. I had secured my reservation online with a credit card, but when I arrived, I was told it had been cancelled due to a "credit card issue." I was never contacted about this cancellation. Luckily, rooms were still available and they honored my original rate, but if they hadn't, it would have been a serious problem. When I mentioned this to the manager, his response was that I "should have known" there was an issue since my card hadn't been charged--something I completely disagree with. The hotel should notify guests of cancellations, period. Another concerning moment happened at the pool. A manager noticed a guest vaping indoors, and instead of politely enforcing the policy, he loudly yelled across the area: "I better not see you vaping in here again." While vaping indoors isn't appropriate, the way it was handled felt highly unprofessional. Between the great location and amenities, there's potential here, but the customer service and professionalism left much to be desired. read more

Ok so where to start with this Inn. The lobby is the nicest part, clean, sunny, welcoming. That's where the positives stop. Walking to our room the halls were dark, dank, smelled old moldy and like stale tobacco. I was hoping the room would be better. This was not the case it smelled bad, the bathroom I could not be in with the door closed as it smelled of mold. The TV worked intermittently turning off at random, the walls are thin and could hear the neighbors arguing. The furniture looks like it was last updated in the 90s stained, old yellow color faded with grime and who knows what else. The comforters smelled old and musty and just took them off. The ceiling was rusted and stained, the coffee pot had dust as well as the packets for it, the window cell was dusty full of dead bugs as well. The pool and hot tub were ok nothing special. The workout room had a treadmill that was not working, no plugin for the elliptical or bike. Also had a pile of old dusty and rusty doors stuck in view behind a stairway. The view and the fact it looked like it was vacuumed in the last week. Find another place unless you're desperate and everything else is filled. They didn't clean our room even though we were gone all day, said we didn't put the sign out requesting it, but there isn't one!! Front desk was snotty. Cancelled the reservation weeks in advance and they still charged my card and refused to refund it.

Outside appearance indicated what the inside would look like. Friendly front staff tho, but right away a discrepancy on the price printed vs price given to us on the phone. she said they charge 15% more for incidentals and that it can be reversed up to a week later. confusing hallways going thru the pool area in order to get to your room. . Frig didn't work, mold on the bathroom grout, garbage under the beds. Place needs an overhaul . Def will not be staying here again read more

The check in was smooth. It seemed we had to walk a quarter mile to the room. Not sure why I was given a room so far from the entrance. The parking lot definitely was not full when I checked in. And it was almost 9:00 pm. After arriving at the room, I did a walked through. The room had a smell, it smelled like dirty clothes that had been worn for a week. There was toothpaste splatter observant the sink, faucet and mirror. Worse yet, the toilet had not been cleaned in a while. And, there was only five feet of toilet paper left on the roll and two feet of the roll was hanging to the floor. Honestly, the room looked like it had been lived in and they did a hurry up of cleaning. The bed smelled the worst. We called the desk, no answer!! We decided to sleep on the roll out couch but as we took off the cousins we saw what appeared to be mold under the cushions. We decided to sleep on the bed, with our clothes on. It is noisy, especially on weekends. If you come make sure to get a room away from the pool area. It is more than the pool though. Not sure why people in the hall sound like they are standing in your room talking. As mentioned in other reviews, it is dated. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable. The staff was wonderful. The pool are seemed clean. For a few days with kids it is probably a great place, for adults wanting some quiet time, not so much. read more

It's difficult to accurately review at this time due to the COVID situation. But, I can cover the basics that should be expected if an establishment decides to open their doors. We had two rooms for four people. Both rooms carried an odor of stale smoke and were musty. Both bathrooms were a bit dirty, with hair on the bathroom floor and in the tubs. One AC unit was either on, or off. No thermostatic control. There was also an almost constant smell of Marijuana in the hallways - it is legal for recreational use in Wisconsin. The bar and restaurant were open. Service was very slow, but the had very few staff on - I'm sure due to COVID restrictions. Food was decent. But a bit overpriced for quality and quantity. It's a really nice location. Nearby marina if you fish or have a boat to bring. I will still give them another try when things get back to normal. The restaurant food was meh (didn't offer many food options for allergens) but the waitress was super sweet and helpful. Breakfast is substandard, no hot food other than what you microwave (sandwiches). The restaurant is closed for breakfast, apparently after "Covid". Was there for 3 nights and only asked room to be serviced one time (both beds and towels only). I came home later that night to find nothing had been done. Ridiculous. read more

We dined here last night for new years. We had a large party(12) so we made reservations. It was a bummer that it was a very limited menu due to the holiday. We had several issues. 1) our waitress was not very attentive or overly friendly. I'm pretty sure we were he only table. For instance she never told us where the salad bar was, check in to see how the food was, asked if we wanted desserts, etc. 2) food was terrible. Everyone's potatoes were cold. My steak was burned and charred on the outside. Shrimp was breaded....that was not explained on the menu. The salad bars was out of a lot the salad fixings and salads. None of us were happy with our food. Had I been asked how things were or saw our waitress after food was dropped off I would have told the waitress. Photos can be deceiving. What looks like a gorgeous place on the website is actually dark, dingy, and uninspired. There isn't even a sign out front. The lobby is okay and the restaurant is nice enough, but the 1970s called and they want their hotel rooms back. My room was technically clean, but there was a smell about the place that seemed utterly counter to the refreshing bay air outside. $130 a night was a hefty asking price for a place like this. More specifically focusing on the restaurant - service was good, especially from the waitress named June. And I actually didn't mind the food. Was it gourmet? OMG, As I walked out the next a.m. after our one night's stay, I noticed an older gentleman pushing a luggage cart and I asked him if he'D stayed here before; he answered "no" and then I said, "well, it might just be your last time." I meant it! Over-night stay in a room with a view of the Lake Superior harbor, which was lovely...that is where this hotel began AND ENDED! Let's get on with the highlights besides the view: Pillows were luxurious and bed was very comfortable. However, I saw questionable stains on bed coverlet. Now, let's begin our journey down "Forgettable Lane.:" Stains on the ceiling, cracks in the ceiling, well worn carpeting which upon stepping onto, made my feet itch horribly. "How clean was it?" came to my mind. This place is NOT Handicapped Accessible in the least; I use a cane! Our room was literally a 2-3 block walk through the dark, dank halls from the front desk. And, the elevator was about 2 blocks from the front desk as well as our room. Made it very difficult to get to our room with luggage, etc. We even tried parking around back of the hotel but encountered the same problem with access to the elevator-2 blocks away! WHO DESIGNED THIS PLACE? Very noisy with kids running like a pack of wild dogs through hallways till all hours. And, the icing on the cake was the next a.m. Try as we might, could not turn on the shower; maintenance guy arrives and told us the faucet was wobbly and you had to pull on it straight out! Duh, like we didn't try that. This situation made us very late for a breakfast date with our friends/aughter! Will NEVER go back EVER! And, it was over $200 a night on July 20, 2024! Reserve at your own risk!!! I WANT MY MONEY BACK ... AND JUST MIGHT DISPUTE THE CHARGE AS WE WERE SO DISAPPOINTED WITH THE ACCOMMODATIONS! I am almost tempted to reserve a room in Duluth next time and pay double...at least I know I won't be paying out money for NOTHING! read more

Yikes! This was the crummiest hotel on Barker's Island! Yes it was also the only hotel on the island but Captain Barker needs to swab a couple decks in this place. I was sent here after someone dropped off a suspicious package to the comfy Holiday Inn I was at and they evacuated all the guests to this hot mess of a hotel. The room can only be described as the possible former site of a triple hooker homicide. Trashy, dirty, and a bit stinky. With some weird pubes on the writing desk. So unless you're into hotels that are decades past their renovation requirements, or you need some pubes for your pube collection.... I'd pass on this dump. read more

Poolside double queen room - $179 a night. I'm originally from Superior and I remember this being the nicest hotel around. Sadly I think they haven't updated this place in about 15 years. Room contained uncomfortable mattresses, flat pillows and very outdated and worn bedding & furniture. The bathroom is exactly the same as it was 20 years ago, including the lighting. Bathtub stained and bathroom floor corners dirty. I've stayed here before for $70 and that was an acceptable price, as the hottub is nice and hot and the pool is nice. Although I think they should have an "adult only" hour - as kids were running around with little supervision and at 11pm everyone was asked to get out for the night. This last weekend it was a Summer price and we opted for a poolside room. The room smelled like mildew (probably due to it being used by those who use the pool) but the smell was quite strong. The walls were incredibly thin, we could hear the next rooms conversations. In the morning when checking out I complained about the loud kids running up and down the hallway at 2am and doors slamming. Instead of compassion I received defense from both of the people behind the desk, basically accusing me of making those things up and how no one complained so obviously it didn't happen. The one man said "I have a hard time believing there were kids awake at 2am". I couldn't believe how rude BOTH of them were being towards my complaint about the noise. He then told me if I had an issue I should have called the desk instead of waiting to complain. Yes - I could have woken up and called but instead I opted to try to just stay asleep. I wasn't looking for a discount, I was just looking to give them a heads up. I could understand if they said they hadn't received any complaints, but to basically call me a liar and be so rude was unacceptable. Overall staff seemed nice, however worst service for bar and restaurant. Took forever to order and receive beverages, let alone food. We sat outside on the patio and wanted to move inside because it was getting chilly. Once we were inside, no one came to our table. Every waiter, busboy, whoever just passed by. Idk if they were just racist or ignorant but either way we never even got acknowledged. We ended up going to McDonald's for dinner; not how we originally planned to eat our dinner. The reviews for breakfast say its the best, but why even give this place a second chance? Going to Perkins, they probably use the same food delivery place anyway, Sysco or US Foods. I am Beyond upset with my experience at this joke. Me and my brother came here for a little getaway visit. First of all, if you plan on going to the pool and hot tub, don't even bother!! The damn pool was warmer than the freaking hot tub. I don't even like warm pool water and I was furious. Then I went up to the vending machines. There was this good looking ice cream machine. And I was going to buy a nice ice cream sandwich after my horrible experience in that pool. I put my card in and ofc, the machine decided to break and steals my $2.35 that I payed for. I couldn't believe the disrespect. My brother also tried to put in $2.35 to see if it was because the ice cream was out. BUT NO WONDER!! It started to work and then stopped. So needless to say I did not get my ice cream sandwich. We had to drive ALL THE WAY to the kwik trip to get a damn shake because I was very upset and needed something to calm me down. IT EVEN GETS BETTER!! I was trying to sleep, and there was this baby who was crying ALL NIGHT and the walls are thin as heck. Once I finally got to sleep, our door was knocked at 7 IN THE MORNIng!! I THOUGHT it was house keeping, but I thought about it and why would house keeping be knocking on your door at 7AM!! When people are still sleeping. My brother opened the door and it was some kid playing games. If you like sleep forget it. You won't get it here. I gave this hotel a 2 star ONLY because they had my all time favorite drink: Mountain Dew orange. That was the only good perk at this hotel. As motel & restaurants go, i have seen worse. I do not agree with the other reviewers who call it old and tired or out of date. I like old things, esp. if they have character, which unfortunately this place doesn't. But old doesn't bother me. Its a little musty because it is by the lake but clean and well kept. The walls a little thin, i would not recommend booking when its busy. There are many expensive motels over in Duluth and i do not understand why Keven T or Suzann C don't go over there for "newer" stuff. The best thing about the place, is the staff is consistently friendly and the motel as a whole is not pretentious. The restaurant serves typical canned stuff, but the staff again is nice. There is a free breakfast ticket and bar ticket during the week. With the ticket, the breakfast is worth what you pay for it. I think the most annoying thing about the Barker's is the wifi was setup by an idiot. Each router has its own different name and finding the right one is a pain. Which is totally unnecessary because it is all open. Some parts of the building only have weak signals, and if you move from one section to another, good luck. If you think you will come here more than a few times ask for a "club card". In winter during the week we paid less than $70/night. It is cheaper with this card and i suppose you get a free night after several punches. A All in all, it is cheaper than about any place in Duluth and has a beautiful view and adequate facilities. read more

I'm a foodie so tonight I am not writing about the hotel but rather the food and the bar. There are many places in the area that have been on tv shows on the food network, please go to these places first. I usually order my steaks medium rare in hopes to get it medium, well my steak was a perfect mid rare, however the quality of the cut was horrid, very cheap steak to quote caddy shack "you can still see where the jockey was hitting it." Also a little seasoning goes a long way. I don't usually add steak sauce, but today I wish I had some. It came with a California blend that at one time was frozen and at another time was still a vegetable. Heating or cooking even frozen vegetables to order is much better than holding them in a hot table all night. So all and all, the food sucks, but the bartender is solid, have drinks here before you go to dinner. read more

I have stayed here a few times during my trips to Superior, and all I can say is this place is, well, okay. When it comes to hotels, this is not the worst place. The rooms are adequately sized. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have a decent restaurant and a bar with some good happy hour specials. If you're there in the summer, you can sit on the patio and enjoy some lovely views of the harbor and the lake. The pool and game rooms are well received by the kids. The main turnoff I have about this place is the tired rooms. The beds and linens feel cheap and the decor and furniture have seen their fair share of use It's not disco-era dated, but enough to make you feel like what you paid for the room was probably too much. Otherwise, as I said, it's not the worst place in the world. If you can look beyond the tired rooms, it's quite pleasant. read more

I am writing this from our $128 a night room. I can clearly hear the conversations on both sides of us as well as in the hall, the beds are not comfortable, and the pillows are flat and hard. Would not recommend having a banquet or stay. Poop in hot tub they put a sign up saying hot tub was closed. Short time later sign was gone people in hot tub. No way way it cleaned properly. Kids arcade, all but 2 games were broken but not turned off so you get to waste your money to find out they don't work. (No out of order signs) Toilet in Room not functioning. Bar made last call at 11pm. Nine minutes later bar manager is screaming at people to get out, as well as being very rude to patrons. Not once did anyone kinda say it was time to leave, it went right to angry screaming and insults. It is sad to see so many customers treated so poorly. This hotel is very tired. She is in an incredibly beautiful location. The dining room is adequate, but the decor and extremely uncomfortable seating is a blast from the past. If you want to sit for a while and enjoy an adult beverage after your meal, you will be squirming in your seat trying to get comfortable. The food is delicious, yet it is served by waitstaff who are very friendly, but sorely in need of training. Rooms are very clean...just need to loose the outdated bedspreads and 1990's TV's. I love the location, the bicycles that you can rent, the patio bar complete with firepit!! The people who work here couldn't be friendlier. I wish they would fix the sidewalk that leads to the side parking lot, and also relocate the smelly dumpster that is squarely parked right beside of the sidewalk! The front desk was kind to us and patiently answered all my friends crazy questions. Downfall? The heat in my room would shut off and blow cold air. The building really gives imagery to "seen better days". Staff is friendly but the room smelled like it hadn't been opened in years. Asked for a double suite and they interpreted this to mean "one bed + sofa couch", no conjoining door. To top it off, none of the lamps in or room worked. The only light we could get was from the windows, which had a less than spectacular view. Despite being free, the WiFi was constantly on the fritz. I couldn't get a single page to load. We went to the Mother's Day Brunch. $23/adult. The menu advertised hand carved meats, steamed and seasoned fresh veggies, salad bar with homemade dressing, made-in-house pasta, potato, and veggie cold salads, fresh cut fruit and berries, and an ocean of handcrafted desserts. Imagine my shock when I was served a Pepsi in a plastic glass. The hand carved roast beef was well done (who does that?!), and the other meat/fish options were not amazing either. We found barely a fresh vegetable (cherry tomatoes and mushrooms, only) on a salad bar with lettuce that wasn't even cut. No fruit (sorry, marshmallow and canned fruit in whip cream does not count) and the cold salads looked like they were straight out of a Sam's club bin-- except, I bet Sam's club would be better. The steamed veggies were carrots, broccoli and cauliflower frozen medley, and if you could find one more way to mass produce less than satisfactory potatoes, I'm sure Barkers Island could find a way. This is a mixed review! Food was good! Service awesome! Our server was unbelievable! FYI We are guest in there hotel. Unfortunately the restaurant manager Matt was WAS A RUDE UNACOMADATING ASS! We sat down on a fri night for dinner there was a All you can eat fish fry and wanted a small sample because the person I was with has some dietary issue, the server asked the manager our request, he denied it... the server was extremely sorry and apologized for the manager, she did go back and pass this request to the chef, he immediately sent a piece of fish out!! Again servers staff in restaurant AWESOME! After dinner we went out to there patio to sit by there gas fire pit, again we had an issue with the same manager! ( we chose this hotel because of this outdoor option) the bartender came out to light it! "No gas" all 5 tanks empty on a Friday night? Bartender tells us he will get a new tank of gas, goes in talks to same manager and he tells him he needs a fresh tank of LP, manager rudely tells him no and to just forget about and walks away!! First, I called for an early check in and told it would not be a problem and to call back by 12:30 so we could get in by 1. I called at 12:30 and the rude woman on the phone (Brandy) told me it would be another hour to hour and a half. Okay, we're coming from out of town so now we need to find something else to do. So we come to the hotel at 1:45. I asked if our room was ready to a nice man at the desk. Brandy was walking by and said "it's probably not ready. You should have called again." When TWO other staff who were also standing there said it was ready and we checked in. Brandy didn't check, she just assumed and gave a rude attitude. At the same time, another couple was there asking for an early check in and was allowed to check in without a problem. Thankfully, we enjoyed the room. It was spacious and cleanly. However, we were put in a room that was at the end of the hotel when they knew we had three small children in tow. This was hard and annoying, but we sucked it up. I wish I could rate the hotel better. I'm giving it 3 stars due to the rudeness of one of the front desk staff and the general manager. I called a month before booking to verify I could book my children's birthday party on a Saturday and to make sure the hotel was not fully booked or have any big events happening. I was told there was nothing big happening and they had plenty of rooms available the date I was looking at. I emailed the contact information asking how I would be able to get the balcony above the pool for the party. I was told no parties are allowed. When I asked why I was told conflicting information a month prior, I was told (by the manager) that I must not have been clear in stating it was a weekend. She would "allow it this time, but no birthdays in the future." I was then told there is an ice race happening and if the ice racers complained, we would need to end our party. And I was also told "I hope you're not inviting a lot of people." First, I paid almost $200 for a room, to be treated this way? I paid the same as the ice racers. Who is going to get more complaints? A family with three children and maybe 8 guests, or ice racers who are likely going to be drinking? This is how you treat your paying customers? Maybe wrong line of work. This was supposed to be a fun time for our family, but the manager made it more stressful with how she treated us. Our party started at 3 and ended at 5:30. After our party had ended we asked for garbage bags and a vacuum to clean up after ourselves in the room. We had to wait over an hour for any of this to be brought to us. We were at the end of the hall at the very end of the hotel, and we had a lot of complaints ourselves about the ice racers being loud, slamming doors at 11:30 pm and later, talking loudly in the halls, and stomping. However, we didn't complain because what good would that do? We went for breakfast the next morning, and the waitress (Cookie) was very nice. However, it took a good 15 minutes to be seated in a restaurant with one other family. We got one of the last rooms available and paid more than we would normally. It was a Jacuzzi room which was the only thing good. The walls were so thin we could hear the man next door snoring. The baby sounded like it was in our room. The TV was not high def and small. The bathroom was plenty big but only a small sink. Clearly in need of updates. Would not stay there again. read more
