I love this hotel. Been a guest for over 20 years. The lobby has couches and a fireplace and the decor is welcoming. Free water and Hot apple cider in the lobby always. The hot breakfast is a great start to the mornings. The free s'mores by the fire pits in the evening is a fun way to end the evening. The rooftop pool is a relaxing hot tub that runs about 105 degrees and is open year around. I have always stayed in a lakeside room either walk out or with a deck. A room facing the waters of Lake Superior is the way to go. This hotel is right on the water and the lakewalk. They have free bikes to use in the spring/summer. This hotel is right in canal park with east walking to many restaurants/bars/activities and shops. The sunrises over the lake are special. The sunset turns the sky into corona candy. I have stayed at this hotel several times over the years. This is one of the older hotels on the canal but is the best place to stay. The hotel is very close to the canal and you can easily walk to see a big ship come in if you see one entering the harbor. Room are spacious. King room has a roomy sitting area. Last year I stayed in a room that was in view of the bridge. This room had a nice deck which provided a great place to do my business work! This year we stayed in the 2 Queen room. This room was on the ground floor with plenty of room for your bikes. Speaking of bikes. Make sure you bring them in your room at night or at least secure them well. We had attempted bike thefts on both our vehicles. Fortunately they were both locked and the thugs gave up. I discovered our bikes on the bike rack hanging by the locks. Pools. 2 nice ones. 1 indoor with a whirlpool and 1 on the roof. The roof pool is very shallow and more of an oversized whirlpool. Indoor is nice sized with plenty of space to sit around the pool. Hotel services. The hotel has some very nice common areas. A huge breakfast dining area which features a very good FREE continental breakfast. The area also doubles as a space to do family fun activities (cards, etc). At night they have supplies for smores and the bonfires are right outside the breakfast area. Housekeeping is an afterthought and customer service is not a priority. They absolutely would not allow early check in as if they were sold out the previous night, however co-workers I was with sis their rooms were so dusty (including the bedding) it looked as if no one had stayed in theme for a while. You have to give 24 hours notice to request any housekeeping services. The front desk is often unattended and no one is about to go out of their way to help you with anything. My room no working bedside lamps, the AC unit front would not stay on. The room was dusty and the shower curtain orange/pink and black with mold. Not a place I'd want to return to. read more

Outstanding service! My daughter dropped a shoe down a hole between the rocks by the lake walk. I went to the desk and asked for a long pole to see if I could retrieve it. They gave me what they had at the desk and headed to retrieve the shoe. A few minutes later, a member of the maintenance team came out to the rocks to help with tools. We didn't get the shoe back but him making the effort to come out and help was above and beyond! Impressed and will certainly stay here again. read more

Our family stayed in canal park for a wedding last weekend. We stayed here for 3 nights with 5 children ages 14-3. I was so surprised by the room for what we paid - $816 for 3 nights. There was mold on the white curtains, the air conditioner doesn't reach the first room so one room is hot and the other cool, the furniture was in bad shape, peeling wallpaper, a very stained coffee table, drawers held together by tape. We needed to use a set and we found out why they were taped together-they fall open! So we would walk into the drawer if we weren't paying attention. The breakfast was always empty- and we didn't go close to closing time. 3 waffles makers. Some scrambled eggs. An empty dried container for oatmeal. Dry cereal. And a juice machine that was empty. I was honestly so surprised at how it was! We paid so much for a good trip for a wedding and Mother's Day and i feel we way overpaid. Or perhaps we just paid for the location. The view and the patio were amazing! The rooftop pool was good, but full of old towels lying around. The indoor pool, hot tub and sauna were nice. Smores 8-10 is nice but go asap. Starting at 945 they'll put it all away. We didn't have much interaction with the staff. I absolutely loved having the opportunity to have a lake facing room for the price we paid (albeit during a flash sale). It's a great location, and it was so fun to be able to visit all of the shops in Canal Park by foot, especially because of the construction in downtown Duluth right now. I loved waking up to watching the waves, listening to the boats come in, and the staff was very friendly. I would have liked to try their full breakfast, though due to the pandemic, it's a bit scant at the moment with pre-packaged muffins, water and s'mores. I did also love the nightly bonfire with s'mores, it was a nice way to wind down the evening, and we took advantage of the Bent Paddle package with the growler and commemorative glasses, with a certificate to have the growler filled at the brewery. read more

Great location! Restaurants, shops, breweries and beautiful Lake Superior are steps away. The room itself was comfortable, the patio overlooking the lake was so great. The indoor pool, hot tub and sauna were well maintained. The heated rooftop pool was our favorite. If I could give them a 0 I would. We made a reservation for 2 adjoining rooms 3 months ago. Confirmed this with the front desk when we got here early then went to go shopping till official check in. The rooms ended up not be adjoining or what we reserved, there is an unknown black residue in the showers of both bathrooms, and when our toilet overflowed, the manager said she would give ME a plunger to fix it. "Maintenance is gone for the day, we have no one that will come help right now." When the teal haired manager brought the plunger to our room, she left it outside the door without even a knock. I was able to get the toilet flowing again, after using most of the towels to clean up the water. We were then told that they would not promise they would have anyone from housekeeping to come clean the bathroom in the morning. This is absolutely obsurd customer service! I hope that management sees this and does some serious re-training of their employees. read more

The Inn is one of our go-to hotels to stay at when we come to Duluth. It's located in Canal Park on the lake. There are many amenities! The rooms are comfortable and clean. There is complimentary water and pop in the fridge. You can choose to swim in the main floor pool that also features a hot tub and sauna. Or you can swim in the heated roof top pool, folks actually use this in the winter, too! The breakfast is very good! They offer gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options. I live to look out on the lake as I sip my coffee. At night you can cozy up by the fires outside and make s'mores, right on the lake. I have been staying here for 15+ years and I am so sad to write a bad review. I just stayed here with my family for one night on a Sunday in July. The hotel was musty and just seemed run down, lacking the energy and appeal it used to have. We walked into our room only to find the toilet completely stained with human feces (had not been cleaned) and the sink clogged with dirty water. They told us to come down and switch rooms to "Room 260"- sometime in that 5 minutes, they gave the room (260) to another person (and admitted this mistake) so we were left with a room that was not the option we had paid for (lakeview, 2 beds) and told they didnt have any rooms of that model left. We heard another guest come down and say they had a moldy room while we were standing there! SECURITY CONCERN: They no longer have employees sitting at the front desk- they sit in the back room and you have to ring a bell. While this might be fine, I watched 2 homeless people walk right in- didn't see where they went, but having someone at the desk is a necessity for security. After 15 years I will be looking elsewhere next time we visit Duluth. This place needs a new owner and/or updated standards. read more

Great location, right where most of the action is. The city itself isn't much to look at but the hotel is in a touristy area near shopping, restaurants, and the lake. The pool is heated and they also have a sauna. Our kids loved the pool. The room itself wasn't anything fancy. It looked clean, except for the top of the microwave door-it had a few weeks worth of dust. There was also lipstick still on one of the mugs in the room, too. Otherwise, clean bathroom, carpets weren't sticky or felt dirty. Their usual breakfast room is closed until further notice so there was no hot breakfast. Cereal, milk, juice, apples, muffins, and instant oatmeal were available until 10:30 AM. They offered coffee and hot water with tea and hot chocolate mix throughout the day. Apple cider during the evening. I didn't see or hear about s'mores but that could just be due to the season (it was very chilly). There was also an electric/pipe sound in our room that went off every 15 minutes. It sounded someone in a neighboring room was turning on the water jets for their tub. We got used to it though. The hotel itself has a rooftop pool, indoor pool, huge complimentary breakfast, and every night they cover s'mores to cook over the outdoor fire. They also offer free bike rentals to guests. The rooms overlooking Lake Superior have a beautiful view and the private porch was a great way to relax to the sound of the waves. Staying in Canal Park is always great albeit a little crowded in summer months. It's convenient to a lot of great tourist options within walking distance. But if I want that experience again, I'll look for another hotel in the area. We got a king suite with a pull out sleeper sofa. King bed was great. The sleeper sofa was horrible. It had the thinnest mattress ever. I didn't see our kids sleeping well on that so we had to MacGyver it. We doubled over the mattress on the floor for one kid and the other we blew up an air mattress we luckily bought. Two TVs in the room. Only one worked well. Steep price tag for accommodations. Check out other hotels in same area if you really need to stay in Canal Park. You'll get a much better deal and hopefully a better experience. read more

We stay here annually during the winter time for bentlyville and LOVE IT!!! They put up beautiful decorations and it just feels festive! The rooms are a good size. They do s'mores at night which is so much fun and right on the lake! They also have the roof top pool which is nice and warm and open during the winter :) The free breakfast in the morning is average but has lots of options to pick from. The staff is always friendly and quick! Book this hotel through there site to get the best price. Also, skip checking in at 3, it can get really busy and take awhile to get through. My boyfriend and I stayed at The Inn on Lake Superior for a small vacation September 1-4 and we absolutely loved staying here! I was set on having a jacuzzi in the room, and this was one of the cheaper options I found. The water in the jacuzzi got at hot/warm as we wanted and it was good size. (I mention this because other places I looked at advertised a "one person whirlpool"-my boyfriend and I both were able to enjoy this whirlpool together.) The indoor pool and hot tub as well as the rooftop outdoor pool were both open. We used the rooftop pool twice, as we didn't really want to be around as many people in the indoor pool/hot tub. The rooftop pool is outside but is heated, we loved it! If you plan on using it in the cooler times I would recommend bringing a robe or something like that. The location is great, we were able to walk to just about any restaurant we were in the mood for and didn't eat at the same place twice, and it is right on canal park. Normally this hotel offers a free hot breakfast, but due to COVID-19 they offered bagged "to-go" breakfast, which is better than nothing! They also provide free s'mores in the evening with a small fire going outside with a view of Lake Superior. They also had free bike rental for guests during the day, but we never used it. I saved the negative things for last because there were so few of them. Upon arrival, the desk clerk was fairly quiet-not necessarily unfriendly, just quiet, and I was surprised they didn't ask to see my ID or credit card. Next, while I am glad they provided some sort of breakfast option, I was not super thrilled with it. It contained a water bottle, muffin, soft granola bar, and an orange. It would have been nice if there was some sort of protein available with the breakfast such as yogurt or a higher protein granola bar. Lastly, the Lakewalk was under construction during our stay, but this is not any negativity on the hotel's part and they kept us informed about it. My husband and I stayed here to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary! (We stayed in the room with a jacuzzi). This hotel did not disappoint. The rooftop pool was such a fun experience for us. Overall it was clean, comfy beds, great breakfast and the staff were extremely accommodating. My only tip is maybe bring your own pillow....they have some just not as comfy as our own. I sent a copy of my yelp review to the manager at the Inn. I was not sure any staff at the hotel would ever see it otherwise, since The Inn apparently doesn't subscribe to receive Yelp posts on their guests' experience. Ms. Caskey replied promptly, specifically addressing some of my complaints and issues. 1- I had made my own room reservation through their website, so I should have had a better understanding of the characteristics of the room's location which was accurately described. 2-Many of the rooms at the Inn had been empty for months due to Covid19 and their housekeeping staff had been reduced by 70%. She granted that the cleanliness of the rooms and public areas such as lobby, eleators, hallways and Business Canter left a lot to be desired and she apologized for it. 3- She acknowledged the particularly unacceptable lack of even basic cleanliness standards in my specific room and did not attempt to excuse or explain it away. 4- She agreed that the facility was dated and in need of refurbishing but corrected my inaccurate claim that the whole venue dated from circa 1980. The Inn was built in mid-1990s so the furnishings obviously couldn't have been older than that. 5- She acknowledged that one of their 2 elevator systems went out of service during my visit and the one used by guests was inoperational for a period of time, but that no signs were posted to inform guests of this nor how long it would last. 6- She expressed her opinion that expecting ready access to USB ports for phone cell charging was a quite recent development in the hospitality industry; even providing a cube converter for guests with their own charging cable. (It is my own opinion that this might be true for an off season room in a non-tourist town priced below $100/night. But that in the current situation it was a reasonable expectation.) She posted a full refund for my one night stay to my credit card. She elected not to address the lack of access to food, food options, or assistance in finding local food sources, failure of Inn staff to make any attempt at enforcing masking requirements among guests moving through common spaces which at this time, was a matter of state law. I upgraded my rating from 1 to 2 stars in light of the fact that I received a prompt response acknowledging the obvious multiple shortcomings of my experience, and the refund of my charges. read more

Best place to go with kids or family. They have a pool inside and a heated hot pool on the roof that is open year round. They have a great breakfast buffet, more food selections than most hotels. Every night they have free smores and a fire outside to make them on. The staff is super friendly and they have free games (board) you can check out at the desk and play in your room or the lobby. They give you the little extras for free, nice soap and lotion in the room, as well as free pop and water in your fridge. They also have free tea and Starbucks coffee 24/7 in the lobby. This is the only place I stay when I am in Duluth. Its also right on canal park so you can see the boats come in and go for a run right from your room in the hotel. read more

The Good: We stayed three nights and splurged on the balcony room facing the lake. Good call! The view was stunning! They served hot and cold breakfast: eggs, waffles, breakfast burritos and the best ever oatmeal! Yum! Many Juices, coffee, milk, etc they had trays and a rail system next to the counter so you could set them down instead of balancing them like so many hotels have. There was seating inside and outside on the lakeside patio off the boardwalk. Hotel staff removed dirty dishes when they could and even refilled coffee! All in all, a cut above for breakfast plus there was plenty of walking room in the food area so you weren't "asshole to elbow" as my dad used to say. The rooms were good and the beds great. I'm a princess and the pea type of person so the bed matters. This one was great. The balcony was just what we wanted and looked out over Lake Superior, the boardwalk, and the entire area shoreline. We had a fridge (we used it) a microwave (didn't use) and a coffee pot which was nice. Each night there were s'mores on the patio from 8pm until 10pm. My son loved this and ate three! Our room was above the fireplaces (there are 2) and I worried about smoke flooding our room since my son has asthma. Management assured us that the fires were gas and wouldn't be a problem. They were right! No problem, in fact it was cozy at night to sit on our balcony and see the fire immediately below. We didn't get a chance to swim but we did scope out the roof top pool. It's small but looked clean and relaxing. Great view of canal park up there. Postcards at the front desk and they'll mail them for you. Not all hotels will. Cute little store with snacks and a few souvenirs. Coffee 24/7. The Bad: The pillows needed some tweaking. We all fought with those. The toilet was wayyyyy to low. It was for little people I think. Not only that it was very close to the wall on the right side. Most people are right handed and it was dicey reaching back to finish our business without feeling like the offending arm was in some kind of restrictive device. One word euwwwwwww! The ugly: The toilet. The toilet. The toilet. Two nights profits would pay for a comfort height stool (I'm only 5'7", imagine if you were over six feet!) one star off for the toilet! My parents were just here over the weekend for their anniversary. The cleanliness was not good: the coffee grounds from a previous guest were still in the pot, a used tissue was in the nightstand, there was a cam with ashes still on the patio, just to make a few. My mom talked to the front desk and called a manager after she left, the manager just said they should have called housekeeping each time they found something. Sorry, in this day and age if you can't clean a room, then you will lose our business! My parents won't be staying there again, my family and siblings likely won't be staying there either! If i could give a negative review i would. The housekeeper stole my friends apple watch (the newest model worth around 1000$) and the workers did nothing to help him! Marisa was extremely rude and honestly should not have a job in customer service at all. the LEAST they could do was give a refund for the room but instead they are putting up a fight. I fully expect them to pay for the hotel room, and replace the watch that was stolen or replace the money that it costed for the watch to be purchased. overall an awful place to stay. if you do stay here be sure to TRIPLE CHECK your room as the housekeepers and the company over all are simply not to be trusted. We have stayed at the Inn on Lake Superior a couple of times a year since 1996, always electing to stay in a king lake side room. We have recommended the hotel to friends and family because of the lake view rooms with balconies or patios, the wonderful breakfast, and friendly, helpful, courteous staff. The Inn on Lake Superior has ALWAYS been our first choice in hotel selection when we come to the north shore. For the past few years, we have noticed a tremendous decline in the upkeep of the rooms, especially the dust in the rooms. This has been reported by many previous guests on Trip Advisor and google reviews. I understand that people leave their doors open and the dust that the horse carriages stir up challenges for housekeeping services. However, I do not understand how curtains with the hems coming out, curtain rods that are broken, toilet seats that are broken, and dirty garbage cans are overlooked by the housekeeping staff when cleaning rooms between guests. This past visit, when we checked into our room, we found a dirty towel left in the shower on the shower curtain rod, a black hair in the tub, and a used hand towel on the towel rack in the bathroom. The bed comforter was stained with coffee or soda spots and appeared to be unclean. We took this off the bed. We found food left in the cushion on the chair, pizza behind the dresser in the bed area, thick dust behind the TVs, and general dust throughout the room. The air conditioning unit had a mud like substance on the fins. We did report the food behind the dresser and the broken curtain rod. A maintenance person came and vacuumed up the food behind the dresser. The next day, a person came to fix the drapery. We ended up going to a Walgreens and picking up cleaning supplies. When charged $339.49 per night for a room I would expect, at minimum, to have the bathroom cleaned with clean towels when first checking into a room. Upon checkout, left the room cleaner than it was when we checked in. I also cleaned the window looking out to the lake, it was so dirty. In a letter did apologize to the hotel for all the dirty towels we used to clean the room. I mailed a letter to the hotel and never received a response from the management. I know that the hotel rooms can be cleaned better than what you are doing at the Inn on Lake Superior. Two weeks prior to our stay, we stayed at the Lift Bridge Lodge next door to your hotel and there was no dust in the rooms, the furniture did not have food in it and the carpets were vacuumed, especially the corners and behind the furniture. We really wanted to come back to The Inn on Lake Superior in October for the fall colors, but don't want to have to bring a vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies to clean a room that we are spending $350 a night for so we booked at the Lift Bridge Lodge next door. read more

This is a charming place. The pool was clean, the dining room and breakfast was good (not fantastic), the rooms were comfy, and the decor is a bit dated. BUT what makes this hotel worth the stay is the staff! It's been a long time since we have received such a warm welcome and sense of hospitality from literally everyone! Examples: the woman adjusting their new bread toasting machine at breakfast who asked me my name and then 30 minutes later she used my name as we were leaving! The security guy(?) standing watch at the door to the breakfast room was chatting up the hockey coaches about their teams and how they were doing! And the receptionist at the front desk who checked my wife and me in around 8:30PM had a charming sense of hospitality! While we were checking in and filling out the necessary forms etc. she gave one last form to identify me with which car in the lot was mine. Upon completing that form she handed me another form saying "one last form" and plopped that last form down with much theatrical flare ---- I froze. After such a presentation I was looking at the exact form I had literally just handed to her. She burst out laughing and then apologized (blushing in embarrassment) and admitted she had had quite a night fighting off a migraine. The Inn is located in the heart of Canal Park and on the shore of Lake Superior which makes the location absolutely fantastic for a weekend in Duluth! The reason I'm leaving this review though, is because an hour after we left, I received a call from the manager that housekeeping had found my engagement and wedding ring on the bedside table after we checked out. We were an hour out of Duluth and it was snowing like mad. The manager kindly offered to fed ex them to me and they just arrived. In this day and age where we hear so much sad and tragic, I want to give a huge shout out to the entire staff, but especially the housekeepers at the Inn for restoring my faith in humanity and reminding me to pay this kindness forward. Very clean rooms, wonderful view of Lake Superior watching the ships, excellent hot breakfast buffet. Right at Canal Park, able to walk to the lift bridge and shops. read more

We stayed here for a weekend to see the Bentleyville Light Show. Our room was on the third floor and we got the balcony view. Watching the sunrise at 7am was so worth getting up early. It was absolutely breath taking. This hotel is right in the middle of everything so we walked everywhere. I would recommend staying here if you're going to be in Duluth. read more

Far more expensive than its value. Staff quite busy and attentive. Breakfast total chaos because so many people trying to get at mediocre food. Mediocre meaning bland, processed, typical free breakfast fare. I had hoped for something more given the room rate, but with so many hundred staying here, my hope was not reality based. read more
