It pains me to leave this 1 star review. I've been taking my dog here for over a year, we started at the Hillcrest location and when they closed we transferred to the Laurel Street location. We had our monthly 9 am appointment today. As we walked over I noticed there were multiple dogs waiting inside and another costumer finishing up a transaction, so we waited outside for things to calm down. Once all the dogs were secured and the costumer had left the building, we entered, at the same time a beautiful woman ( in their black uniform entered with her dog off leash and looked at us and said " Do you have an appointment?", one of the dogs waiting for service jumped up to my dog, so I said " We'll just wait outside til things calm down " she said "Yes". After a minute the very kind young man who takes care of us waved us in, we entered again and he took my dog back. The beautiful woman was still in the front and I said " Hey, I don't appreciate the way you just spoke to us, we had an appointment and have been coming here for a while now" she responded with " This is my place" with a very sharp attitude. I said " Well, that's not the best way to treat a costumer , this will be our last visit." She smiled at me and said " Well we can get your dog now and " something that I can't remember. It's really sad and awful that in this economy and with so many options for grooming in SD that she would choose to treat us like that. Every employee has always been so kind to me and my dog. We will miss seeing them and wish them the best. read more

This is my dog Winter's favorite place. She refuses to walk by without going in and getting a treat. Everyone who works here is a true lover of dogs. I have been scared to have my senior dog with a seizure disorder groomed because she finds it so distressing, but Barkhouse offered to work with me to schedule the grooming for a time when the shop was empty so she was not triggered by sounds and helped me plan with CBD drops in advance (I didn't even have to ask, they literally offered...so kind). Winter was so comfortable and happy. Drastically different experience from other groomers. Since I work close by.. I would walk by this place of business daily and noticed how friendly & happy the staff working here were. I saw that the dog grooming area was set up right out front by the entrance more as an open concept. Not hidden in a mysterious back room where your unable to see pets getting groomed. Intrigued, I stopped by to ask the staff questions & right away the gentleman who assisted me was patient and assisted me with making an appointment for my pet. Horrible,horrible customer service! I booked an appointment for my dog to be groomed and specifically asked if I could wash him before bringing him in because he just needed a clean up. The person I spoke with said that would be fine, so I bring him in looking like he just got back from the groomers. all he needed was a clean up around the eyes and feet.The owner says oh no I'm sorry you can't do that. We have to use our products,After a 5 minute lecture I leave my dog to be groomed. I receive a call 5 mins later that he's not clean enough so they need to rewash him because there just trying to get more money. I say that's ok I'll just pick him up, no worries. When I arrive they hand me his leash and owner says to stylist let's make a note not to let her back. Never,ever have I been sooo disrespected. I'm still in such shock. Extremely rude people! The WORST experience ever. I've gone a few times and it's always be okay. Never great but okay. Just took her the other day and my dog doesn't like the dryer it's supposed to be noted and was told it was and apparently not. She needed her nails trimmed so I decided to give this place one more go. Holy. Moly. My poor baby. She acted like she had been abused for the hour I left her. She wasn't her normal self. She was TERRIFIED. We were up all night trying to calm her down, didn't even sleep a wink. Finally after her crying and scratching for hours i gave her an oatmeal bath and as soon as water hit her it foamed up. She was COATED in soap still.... Not a little but i had to fully bathe her again. I miss the old dog wash place that actually cared. 0/0. Never again. read more

The hours posted on the door are incorrect, they never have anyone staffed middle of the day so get ready to waste a trip here. They are extremely misleading, they mention they close at 5 but won't let you in the door past 3:30 to clean. Advice to management, change your hours or let people know not to waste their time choosing to use your services The owner even messaged me directly trying to ban me from using their services bc I made an honest Yelp review (see image attached). Pretty dishonest, they seem upset that a customer would be frustrated bc they don't post any of this information on their site or front door. Instead of reaching out, they try to ban a customer? Diana publicly comments on my review for public display then tries to ban customer behind closed doors due to their own lack of transparency Feel free to look at any poor review on this business, you can see Diana lashing out to customers instead of trying to fix any problems or show empathy or understanding, especially when they're in the wrong. What a cozy little spot for the doggo's. Awesome customer service also. You're welcomed with open arms as Dina comforts your little pets with some treats. The shop is very clean and organized. The white walls and the shiny floors gives it a cozy look and feel to it. As for the groomer (Chase), he did a great job cleaning up our Shih Tzu. He was really gentle and did his best to kindly introduce himself to my doggo. The full service groom is $65.00. This review is a little late, but here's from our last couple of trips to Barkhouse! We've been coming here for the last few years as it's local to us and a great price, and Dina is always so warm and understanding with our delicate pups! We have a blind 16yo senior and a nervous rescue lab beagle, so barkhouse is a lovely relaxing space for them to get the clean ups they need. We've used grooming services plus the self wash and it's always great- the products supplied are especially good, and Dina makes sure you have all you need to give your pup a spa day! They said they could express anal glands but only did it halfway and my dog had complications as a result and had to go to the vet. If they can't do the butt, they should just say that, instead of endangering dogs butts. Don't trust them with your dog's butt. They did an OK job with the trim and bath. He was still a little wet on his belly and paws. I ended up putting in his leave in conditioner because it didn't feel like they used any, or if they did, it didn't work. Also, you have to call for an appointment. You can't book through yelp. Overall huge disappointment and we won't be returning. Two stars because our dog was clean and the trim was ok but everything else was subpar. read more

I'm new to San Diego and needed to find a groomer. They do have last minute appointments which was nice and the groomer who cut my baby was also very nice. I gave him the notes from my previous groomer which was a teddy bear head and something for the body. He didn't seem to know what that meant so I just said to make her look cute! She is an older dog so I know she can be a little difficult and I'm thankful the groomer was patient. We went to the Laurel location today and found that our sensitive/anxious dogs did great here, too. If you have adorable and sensitive dogs, you may consider taking your dogs to this location than Washington as it is smaller and quieter. Our pups love Anthony so much and he always provides superior service. He provides great tips for us as being newer puppy parents. Dina, the owner, is wonderful as well and provides us with guidance for our anxious dogs. We tried CBD and we think that helps a little for the anxiety. Barkhouse was terrible! They quoted me $70 and charged me $85. They were very rude and snarky with me. Extremally unprofessional. They argued with me when I explained that I was told the grooming would be $70 not $85. The dog groomer was very inexperienced. They never did get my dog, Milly's name correct. They kept calling her by other names. They called me several times in 2 hours asking what number cut I wanted. I told them when I dropped her off. They were not able to work with my dog as far as standing up and being groomed. My dog is 13 and has been groomed all her life and no one has ever had this problem with her. Again, very inexperienced and unprofessional. There are much better groomers such as Foxie Roxie and Gabriel. I already have an appointment with Gabriel. I would give Barkhouse zero stars but Yelp won't let me. read more
