Tom & his technician came out yesterday & installed 2 different Owl boxes for us yesterday. One of Owl Boxes was for us because we have so many rats & mice living here in rural East Canyon Escondido that destroy our garden and get into our work trucks. We've had 3 different incidents where they entered the vehicles & couldn't get out, we were unaware of their presence until the awful stench inside the vehicles of a deceased rodent appeared, then that was expensive to locate & remove the deceased rodent by a local mechanic. After spending hundreds of dollars on snaping traps, baiting the traps & removal of the rodents, it was time to try a different method of pest eradication. Tom walked the property & located the best spot for the installation, he & his technician had it installed within an hour. It looks great & hopefully we'll get a new Owl family to help out with rodent population. The 2nd Owl Box was installed for our family that lives close & has the same the same issue. We were very happy to have barn own boxes installed by Tom in our yard and in our neighbors yard, to house a nesting pair. After many promises of delivery and install of the 2 boxes, Tom finally delivered. They looked great. Until the roof started peeling off of the Ornate Box Tom had installed on top of a pole. Sent him pics of the damage in Jan 2021 and in Feb 2021 Tom said "No that won't do at all. I'll replace it the week after Feb 20th." Since then, I have emailed him over 7 times with varying responses that he is headed my way within the week\month to replace the box, but none have ever materialized. He no longer responds so I am not sure he is okay anymore but, I wanted to let people know about this because we have been polite and kind for 3 years asking for a replacement for our Ornate Owl Box that Tom's early emails agreed to. Since we spent over $1000 for the 2 boxes and installations by Tom, I can now say I regret the expense. No owls yet either but that is not Tom's fault plus the Ornate Box in our yard barely has a roof over it anymore. Probably not best bet for an owl looking for a nest. See some of the attached pics I emailed Tom to show him the box. To be fair, the plain box in my neighbors yard appears to be in good shape so if you must purchase here, perhaps that is a better bet, although I don't see this box on his website anymore. They all look like some version of the Ornate Box that you see in our attached pictures, which have undergone progressive degradation since Tom's install. read more

This is the greatest review I will ever give. Why, continue to read! I bought our house with an owl box. It was made of wood with a makeshift tin sleeve around the wood pole. In a heavy wind and rain storm(in the middle of mating season) the entire pole and box came down. My wife and I were very upset and we called several places till my wife found Tom's services. He came out the next day!, uh huh! He and a partner installed way better boxes on way better poles. The next two days were anxiety filled. Our owls returned! I recently purchased a home which had extensive rat damage to the HVAC unit underneath the house. There were poison bait boxes throughout the property. I made sure all the entrances for possible intrusions of rats were closed off and I knew I didn't want to continue with the poison bait boxes. I researched the advantages and natural way of using owls for rodent control. I selected Barn Owl Boxes because the owner Tom had an extensive background on not only the use of owl houses but knowledgeable about raptors, and he really loved what he was doing. He has even written a book on owls and owl houses. It took about a month after I purchased my owl home for the installation but I was fine with that and he was punctual on the day of installation. He gave me several locations on where to install the home but was more keen on a certain location which I agreed to. To my disappointment and surprise a neighbor complained that the owl house was obstructing his view of the canyon. I called Tom as I didn't want to deal with constant complaints from the neighbor and I really wanted the house to be enjoyed by the owls. Tom came back the next day, removed the house and we found a new location for it. I'm just waiting for the owls to find their new home! Tom is really an expert. After almost 14 years of being a loyal customer of Air Superiority and Tom, I just purchased my fourth Owl Box. I have rats. My neighbors have rats. Everyone I know in the Oceanside area is being inundated by rats. I won't use poison because I have a dog, a cat, and six chickens. I don't want to use a trap because then I have to empty and re-set the trap and that totally skeeves me out. My options were limited...or so I thought. Enter Tom at Barn Owl Boxes. Tom is AMAZING! I first saw him on an interview for channel 4 many years ago and then ran into him live and in person at the fair two years back. I hadn't closed escrow on my house yet but I told him then: one day I will have a home and I'll be calling you to come install an owl box. Today was that fated day. Tom is professional but casual. He's funny and entertaining with his wealth of bird knowledge. We talked about owls and kestrels and which I'd be better off attracting in my neighborhood. He went immediately to the spot he thought the box should be placed and asked questions about the neighbors and whether or not that location would actually be okay. He is a marvel of efficiency and skill. I can't believe I waited almost a year to finally get him out here installing an owl box for me. It took him less than an hour to show me my options, tour the property for the best placement, and put up the box. I still can't believe it. His parting words were rules that made me feel even better about the whole thing (I didn't realize it could get better): 1) Call him the moment an owl moved in. He tracks when he puts a box up, what kind of box it is, and when the first residents move in. I love a man that is truly passionate about his work! 2) Never touch/bump the pole the box sits on (he didn't explain that one, and I don't know that it much matters as I assume it's for the simple reason that the vibration would travel up to the box disturbing the residents. Too many disturbances and they'll take off). 3) Never touch a baby owl on the ground. Apparently when the young 'uns fledge they may not be able to get back up to the box. Putting two 2 x 4 x 10's together and creating a ramp back to the box is all they need. They'll get back up to the box by themselves. He also said that he's had clients get owls the very same night the box is installed, so now, of course, I can't stop running over to look out the window every five minutes to see if any have moved in yet :) read more

IMO 2 things are important in any transaction: the product of course, but also the ability to follow-up after the sale. Tom installed not one but two owl boxes for me and I had owls (and still have!) within 30 days! Many generations are scouring my neighborhood for mice and rats and we all owe it to Tom. The box seems perfect size for barn owls, and at least 4 fledglings (big) can navigate inside w/o problems. It's been a couple of years now and everything is weathering well. I've contacted Tom several times over the years and never fail to get helpful, informative answers and suggestions. He knows an awful lot about raptors and birds in general and is a great resource for me. If you buy from Tom or have some other dealings with him you won't regret it. read more

I gave this Company a generous 2 rating. I had an Owl Box installed about 4 years ago to the tune of about $500 to $600. Nice little box. The owner , Tom came out, climbed my tree and installed it. He then proclaimed " The fastest Owl that inhabited one of my boxes was 1 hour. " I am still waiting. I called and Tom came out 3 years after purchase to check things out and suggested I put another Box in my yard. ??? . Although there were no guarantees at purchase, where he was quick to point out how fast an Owl inhabited one of his boxes but should have pointed out, instead of avoiding it, that I may never get an Owl! Disappointed. Got one for Rodent control. UPDATE... We had a little miscommunication and Tom has been the utmost professional! I run a business also and know how important customer service is. While the quality of the owl box is good, the lack of customer service, communication, and altogether unfriendly nature of Tom, made this experience very unenjoyable. On top of the fact that the owl boxes are not cheap, you get the feeling that he is upset if you don't pay the EXTRA $320 to have him come out and install it. And questions on recommendations on where to install it for the " do it yourselfer", go ignored. For that matter, most questions you have over email go ignored. Bottom line, while he may make a quality product (which you already expect due to the price), the amount of effort and frustration following the ordering process would make me steer clear again in the future. read more

I'm going to have to agree with C.J. on this one. Our HOA had the boxes installed ($2500) and there was no follow up until one of our residents made several calls. We have never seen any owls. The boxes were supposed to be cleaned and moved if they needed to be in a different location. All this company did was blame the weather and our landscapers for the failure. read more

What a great line of true ecological greenness I was given when they came to my canyon property in Clairemont. According to owner, every tree on the property was about to collapse, and there were only 2 locations to place the boxes. Boxes - plural. Because when the female nests, the po liddle male needs a pwace to live. OK - I bought into that. Its not a lie. but for over $1K, over 2 years later? No tenants. Tom put up an owl box for us almost 6 years ago. Since then, our rodent AND snake population has greatly diminished! Just as Tom said, it took 1-2 years for our barn owls to begin to nest in our box, but once they did, it was owl heaven! We even see generations of owls born in our box, flying around our property each evening. Unfortunately, once our owls' last baby exited the box, bees built a hive in it so we had to have it taken down (by a great bee specialist who Tom recommended). Within 24 hours, Tom came out and installed two new owl boxes for us. We are animal lovers--we have two very spoiled cats and about 20 frogs. I have always wanted to install an owl box, partially to welcome more beneficial wildlife into our yard, but also because we live near a canyon and have an occasional rat issue. I hesitated because I knew there is no guarantee that owls will come immediately. But I finally contacted Tom at the suggestion of others on NextDoor, who also had success and posted pictures. The box was ready to install within about 10 days of purchasing it. Greg, the installer, was awesome. He was very professional and gave us all the necessary information to make sure we increased our odds of getting and keeping owls. He installed the box on a Saturday and by Tuesday we had an owl--maybe two--we aren't sure yet. It's really fun to see them sitting on top of it at night or swooping by as we watch tv. We live in Solana Beach, and now have rats, mice and rabbits in our yard. I've been using bait boxes for about a year, but am uncomfortable doing so. I read an article about Tom's owl boxes, and decided to have two installed. We have some very tall canary pine trees in our yard, and Tom spent some time walking about so as to choose the perfect spot for the boxes. He tucked them away among the branches of the trees, and as big as the beautifully-made boxes seemed at ground level, they fit in unobtrusively. He said it could take a year or so for owls to move in, but that we will "definitely get owls." I found Tom very easy to work with, and very accommodating. Five stars without hesitation! read more
