This store sits in one of the last remaining "MALLS" in Birmingham, AL and in what USE TO BE the most prestigious shopping area/location. With that said, THE STORE appears to be FAIRLY CLEAN but the RESTROOMS are ABSOLUTELY and I mean POSITIVELY DISGUSTING! Glad this bookstore is still going strong! They have a very large Harry Potter display along with other displays dedicated to different genres. The bathrooms could be cleaner. They have a large sitting area next to the cafe that serves Starbucks drinks. The staff is friendly and witty. The Children's book area is lovely. Support your local bookstore! One of my favorite bookstores in the greater Birmingham area. They have books galore as well as other nice gifts for children. There's almost always sales going on here too. This place is different from other bookstores cause I see people working or studying in the cafe (Starbuck's) portion for hours and hours on end. It used to be a great place for my friend and I to study back when I was in school. You can practically live here with no worker saying a word to you! My friend brought me here and lead me straight to the messiest table in the cafe. Food crumbs everywhere, empty drink cups sitting there, and several books just laying there! I asked her why can't we sit at a cleaner table? "Because this is my mess from earlier! Now sit down...." Apparently she was here a few hours ago, got bored and decided to come get me from my house. This place is truly an extension of her own home LOL! read more

I came in to return a new book in exchange for a credit. The manager on duty relayed to me that Barnes & Noble is trying to have exchanges take place on the spot rather than giving credits, but that it was not impossible to do so. Then I asked them if they were unwilling to give me a credit even though it is possible. Their answer was "yes" --able but unwilling to exchange a return for a credit... I stopped by here recently for an item I needed to pick up that day. The cafe is open, but they do not allow you to sit inside the cafe or drink your drink in the store. Other than that, there's something to be said for simply walking around the store and looking at books, which I enjoyed that day. I ended up finding what I came in for (a journal) and also bought a great new novel I ended up loving. Service was good. The store was not overly crowded and staff were wearing masks (I came in about a month ago). I'm sure brick and mortar bookstores aren't doing as well as they used to, but I had a good experience here and would recommend it if you need something right away. read more

I have my fair share of kindle books, but I still love real books and going to bookstores. I like to walk through the aisles and actually touch and feel books! Also Barnes & Noble's has great deals on bargain books, calendars and planners. I went here one day in particular when I was just looking for something new to read. I didn't really have a specific book in mind, I just knew I wanted a book that was on sale. The staff here was extremely helpful. They offered plenty of suggestions for books in different genres, at various price points. Very clean, the staff are friendly and their books are easy to find. They have a very large section for collectors! Their coffee bar is clean and they have great options. In this era of dying bookstores it was disappointing that my husband & I walked into this Barnes & Noble & both ordered a coffee, but were promptly told we could not linger in the cafe due to COVID concerns. We said that wasn't a problem since we were there to browse (and buy) some books. I started looking around when an employee came over to me & said I wasn't allowed to have my coffee on the sales floor. So I'm supposed to buy coffee but not drink it? This place is not interested in making sales too badly, OR maintaining any decent customer service. Guess I'll go on Amazon.... read more

I was very disappointed with my most recent experience at this location of Barnes and Noble. Having been a customer of theirs as long as I can remember, I can never remember an experience that was so invasive at a bookstore. To me, visiting a bookstore and coffee shop should be a calming experience spent perusing through books and magazines and slowly sipping coffee while in my own world. I was approached by 6 employees during my half hour visit who tried to sell me something or add on to purchases; very annoying. At the cash register, the employee spouted off so much extra sales jargon I couldn't even keep up. I still enjoy the environment and book offerings of this store, but it was very clear that they are desperate to up the sales, by using pushy sales tactics. Very sad to see this happen. read more

Just like any Barnes & Noble, except in Alabama, where I happen to be. Would you believe it's nearly impossible to find a Barnes & Noble in Alabama? Well, it is. For reasons I don't care to share (ok- because I'm CHEAP and a book I wanted was 10% off at Barnes & Noble, which saved me approximately $3) I really needed to find a B&N in order to purchase a gift for somebody. This Barnes & Noble is clean and well-stocked. They also happened to have multiple copies of the book I was buying while the "other guys" had been out of it since before Christmas. My only complaint is the parking situation. As in I think they need more. read more

They have such a great selection of games and toys compared to other bookstores! Really a nice store! Clean restrooms! Cafe inside and perfect location to burn some time. Only thing I'm a bit concerned with is that the restroom is in the kids area. I feel like that presents an opportunity for things you don't want happening. Might just be me though! Barnes & Noble is one of the few franchises that gives me the warm fuzzies. It may be a giant corporation, but it is clean, well-lit, and full of books. If I have to kill time in the Summit area, I like to find a book and sit on the floor in the aisle and read for a bit. Books are kinda pricey here, but I guess I'm just used to cheap, used books. Starbucks coffee and snacks are pretty good as well. The seating area in the café always seems to be crowded, so I guess if you want to find a spot, you have to come early. Barnes would get five stars if it was locally-owned, but I just can't give that star out to a franchise on principal. Still, a great store. read more

Security guard at the front was very rude. Was not made aware of the limited capacity in the store, and were not notified to leave until last minute and were rudely rushed. Awesome place! Great selection, always clean, super-friendly employees-- I even know a bunch of them by name now! I don't drink coffee too much, but when I get a craving I'll only go this Starbucks. And hopefully I'll catch Jessica when she's there to make me a drink. The thing I love most about this store is how knowledgeable the employees are. I've gone in before without knowing the name or author but I did know some random factoids about what I was looking for, and they figured it out. I don't really know what somebody could say negatively about this place. I very much enjoy stopping in on occasion while milling about at the lovely outdoor mall that is The Summit. This is a very large store with most anything you could want. They've got the standard store stuff as well as a toy/children area, music area, and the cafe. The last time I was in there, they announced a few times over the intercom some little giveaways. I had a delicious sample of a cookie from their Starbucks cafe. I don't like how often they rearrange and how the actual nimber of books is constantly shrinking in favor of toys, puzzles and games (Who cares? There's a Toys R Us down the street). Also, there are virtually no plugs in the cafe for laptop use. Also, the store has decreased the number of newspapers they carry. Absolute awful experience at the Starbucks here. Usually, Starbucks have a barista guarantee where if your drink is not made the way you like it, they will remake it. I watched one male barista put water into my ice coffee, which is only added to cold brew ice coffee. When I tried it, I was confused and it tasted very sweet and watery. I asked the woman who initially took my order if there was sugar free syrup to which she rudely replied there was. So I started to walk away. Then I asked my boyfriend if they added water in his and they didn't. I walked back in to ask for a new coffee since it was watery. The same rude woman once again, snapped at me. Saying "let me tell you how we make the coffee". I then told her "I saw the other barista put water in my coffee" she then realized she was WRONG. She told the male barista to make a new one for me. Not once did she apologize for being so rude and wrong. The barista who was an Asian guy, apologized and made me a new coffee. Deeply disappointed in the service and I will never go to this Starbucks ever again. read more

A great bunch of booksellers who love books, coffee and their customers. I love walking in the building everytime.

I work near this B&N store. Every day for the past year or so, I have had my lunch break at this location's cafe. Recently, during a routine meal, an employee (who sees me at least once a week in the store) bluntly informed me that no outside food is allowed in the cafe due to "health inspector policy," and that inspectors would "ding" the cafe if they caught me. Yeah, right. It was a weekend. And as far as I know, no such policy exists, and no inspectors (county employees, in this case) will be doing their job on a weekend. How am I just NOW getting busted over this? And why would the store get "dinged" by the Health Dept. for something a customer is doing? In addition, I know many people who bring their own snacks and drinks into the cafe while they chill, work, use their laptops, study, etc. and have never been told not to do so. All about the $$$, eh? I will not be visiting this location for my breaks again. It does not help that they re-arranged the store so that the cushioned chairs- which were once in the retail area by the windows- are now situated in said cafe. read more
