Let me start by saying I have never step foot in this store! However, I have bought countless author signed books from Alabama Booksmith. I found their website in a Google search because I was looking for a signed addition of Bryan Stephenson's Just Mercy. I couldn't believe my luck when the signed edition was the same price as any other unsigned copy. I had stumbled upon a treasure trove of fantastic books all signed by their authors selling for the standard list price. Of course they have some extra special books that are collectors items and a bit more expensive. Those are featured on a different part of their website. Today I opened my signed copy of Jon Meacham's "And There Was Light". It's the perfect gift for book reading friends. One day I plan to make a pilgrimage to the store and actually shop in person. Love the concept of this place! The ability to get a signed copy of a book at the regular book MSRP is awesome! I reviewed the website beforehand to see what books they had in stock and found one I wanted. When I walked in, they quickly directed me right to the book I was looking for! The owners are clearly very passionate about their business and books in general. Docking a star for logistical reasons. Hard to find the store, bad parking lot, hard to find the entrance, and finally they are still requiring masks in July 2022... they acted shocked that we came in without masks on... I don't even carry a mask with me anymore unless I'm going to a medical office and I'd venture to say most folks are in the same boat. They did give us free masks to wear which seemed completely unnecessary but we put them on for the ten minutes we were there and then threw them away when we left... read more

Late August 2022 Thank heavens for the internet! I wanted a super-special gift to round out the stack for my Mom's birthday. Falling through the internet's rabbit hole, I landed at Alabama Booksmith. They only sell signed books - that's it - and most are sold at the list price. Let that sink in....a signed book is the same price as an unsigned book. I called before I placed my order and Lauren couldn't have been nicer - so sweet! The pristine SIGNED book arrived on schedule and it was indeed the star of the birthday gifts! This is the Nordstrom of bookstores. The best customer service I have encountered anywhere, in any type of retail establishment. Even the emails they send out are so polite. I wish they could impart they customer service to every other bookstore across the country. As to the books, they have so many to choose from, every genre. What a unique and awesome concept! While I have not been directly to the bookstore, I stumbled upon the online presence of this store after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal. I ordered one book before signing up for their Signed First Editions Club. After each book is ordered they promptly send you a personalized email letting you know it's been processed. I usually receive my books about 4 days after which is great considering I'm in California. I definitely recommend the Alabama Booksmith for anyone looking for high quality first editions! read more

Never even heard of a book store where each and every book in there is signed by the authors themselves before visiting this wonderful book store. Was on an impromptu road trip to Alabama and was looking for interesting places on the way. This bookstore popped up and had to check out the place. I assumed that it would be a small place with a very little collection of books since there were not many photos posted on Yelp. But, it is not really that small, they carried a nice collection of books and the store is well kept and organized. People were very friendly and welcomed with warm smiles and friendly greetings. Alabama Booksmith is a hidden treasure for the bibliophiles of Birmingham. We just happened to stumble upon this little shop, and we were very impressed! Every book on the shelves is signed by the author, and many of them are first editions. It's a cozy little atmosphere, and I felt I could stay there for hours just perusing every book. Tucked away down a backstreet in Homewood, it's not the easiest place in the world to find. It's a white unassuming trailer with some small signage. I was pleased to see how nice it was on the inside and was promptly greeted and helped. The books were neatly displayed and seemed to be signed, yet were the same price as unsigned books. There were a ton of local selections and no shortage of Alabama and Auburn signed books. They won't have every selection in the store, but you're sure to find something that you'll love. I've never felt more compelled to write a positive review than now due to the amazingly perfect experience I had with this book store. I became aware of Alabama Booksmith via a tweet an author tweeted about his signed book being available at this store. I am out of state and I called and they couldn't have been nicer on the phone; they sounded happy yet kindly explained they were sold out but were hoping to get more and they took my email in case and said they'd contact me. Sure enough about a week later I got an email saying they had one for me. They also explained there was a minor ding to make sure I knew before I ordered so I could decline if I wanted. I accepted and paid and the book arrived even better than expected. The packaging was PERFECT. They packed in bubble wrap then a special cardboard box that protected the book from damage in transit. The email communication before and during the shipment was excellent. They kept me aware every step of the way. I have ordered more than 200 books from major bookstore retailers, to other independent bookstores, to Amazon, to stores like Target etc. and this is THE BEST experience I have ever had. What a unique bookstore!!! Full disclosure: I am a bibliophile. Love books, bookstores, libraries. I love the smell of books. I love collecting books. A friend and I, both bibliophiles, visited this unique bookstore. It was an interesting experience and worth seeing ... once. Beware the offensive proprietor. He followed us, lingering nearby, positioning himself throughout the store to inspect our every move as we perused book jackets. After a while we began to take offense and told him so. He had no reply and refused to let us shop in peace. We went to Little Professor Book Center, which is just seconds away, and where the superior and friendly service and atmosphere makes it a joy to shop. read more
