Fantastic bookshop that's been in Homewood for forever! I strolled in to get a couple of last minute Christmas gifts, they have a ton of great stuff! One thing that struck me as amazing was the membership you can get! It's $10/mo or $99/yr and you get 40% off all of their bestselling books (rotates weekly), 20% off everything else, and free drip coffee! If you're a big book buyer, that is soooo worth it! Or if you just love visiting coffee shops, the coffee would be worth it! They have several little tables and chairs around where you can perch to do some work. I just love how local everything is in here. Some art gifts, coffee table books, non-fiction, etc. They have a great website, too! read more

The Little Professor Bookshop continues to be one of the best places for me to decompress. I recently asked MK for assistance in finding a book or books to read regarding dementia and sundowners syndrome. Thank goodness, MK quickly recommended two books and I'm currently reading the first with great interest. If you're new to the area, or in Birmingham for business travel, please stop by the Little Professor Bookshop - you won't be disappointed. As a book lover, this place is a delight! I love how sunny it is and the cozy, green decor. The Homewood location has an upstairs area that overlooks the front of the store, there's also a table up there if you'd like to work remotely. They sell hot and iced coffee and the staff is happy to walk you around and help you find a good book. read more

Really wanted to like this place more. Beautiful space and a great fiction section, but the poetry section was virtually nonexistent (maybe ten or so books of poetry and nothing interesting). I was carrying a few novels around to buy as I was looking for the poetry section, but when I saw how little they carried--and that the section wasn't even labeled, I put the novels back on their shelves and left. Might give it a try in the future, but will look at the poetry 'section' first to see if it is worth my time. read more

SO STINKIN' CUTE! I am a soho-area regular and have never stopped by this quaint little bookshop. It's incredibly open inside and just absolutely adorable. They have a few spaces for seating indoors that would be great for studying or reading, as well as some more tables outside at the entrance. I was happily surprised to see Little Professor has its own coffee stand indoors, also! We didn't try any but will absolutely give it a try next time we swing by the area. Their variety of stationary cards were one-of-kind, with detailed and punny drawings that will surely warm the heart of your loved ones. I can see myself studying on the upper level and taking in the sunlight that comes through those big windows!! Great find. read more

Cute bookstore. Not many science-related books, but they have an entire wall dedicated to faith-based ones. It makes sense, given that people in this area likely buy more faith-related books. They also have a large children's section with unique books, including some by local authors! read more

This is their third location in Homewood, and it's nice and spacious. However, each move seems to reduce the inventory. There just aren't many books. I want to support local booksellers, but there wasn't much for me. Also, the books offered are mostly female or children-oriented. Maybe that's their target audience, which is fine. There are no magazines that I could see. As a male, I don't have much reason to return. read more

This kind of charm doesn't exist any more. I would give them 5 stars except of two reasons 1) layout of books was not intuitive and 2) they need some more books. I appreciate not being over stuffed, but this was so minimal that it almost lost its coziness (which is so essential for a book store). Still thoroughly enjoyed and would go back. read more

This independent bookstore has the best customer service on the planet! I ordered two books using their app (my mistake) and failed to get my member discount and free home delivery - - but all it took was an email to set everything straight. Kathleen, an employee extraordinaire, replied promptly, and even offered free gift wrapping. This is the difference between a big national chain and a locally owned business. We have patronized The Little Professor since we moved to Birmingham in 2015, and will continue to do so. Great book store. Very well organized. There is a cafe upstairs as well as some used books. We bought a few things here, including some cards, a coloring book, and a book for the kid. I could easily spend an afternoon here. If you are in the Homewood area, check this place out. It's nice to support the local businesses. read more

Absolutely positively not closed! Just bought two books and a card from them. They've moved to a busier shopping area and are right next to urban cookhouse. I love how curated their selection is, and all of their fun 'nonbook' items, like cards and shirts. The shirts that are based on old book covers are incredibly soft and now one of my favorites. I visit every time I'm in town and am so glad to see that they're still open! read more

This was my first time at Little Professor. It was exactly what I look for in a bookstore! Someone has done some beautiful curating. It has classics, bestsellers, regional literature, magazines, and cozy corners where you can curl up and read should you choose. The store was well-lit but cool and quiet. It's important to me not to be overstimulated when I am book-hunting/reading. I ended up getting Circe by Madeline Miller, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, Eveningland (a short story collection set in the Mobile Bay area) by Michael Knight, and Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. The cashier gave me 20% off my purchase unasked. I can't wait to go back once I have money again! read more

There's something about a spiral staircase in the middle of the store to let you know this place is just right. This place is for a real lover of books. This is no superstore to browse then go home and order off the Internet. Nor does it have an unwieldy selection. What it does have is quality. When I pull a book off the shelf, I am confident that the writing is good and worth my time; that it is not a waste of my money. I don't have that kind of confidence in one of those super-sized bookstores. Little Professor does some things very right: the table immediately in front if you when you walk in the doors has some newer releases that you might find interesting. But it's not just some "staff pick" and you don't have to take their word that it's good: sticking out the top is a newspaper clipping with a review. If you're the book-club type, it's got a calendar with book-club meeting times and a special bookshelf that stocks what books the book clubs are reading. Upstairs is a used book section. Also upstairs: local interest and magazines. I really like that they carry some international magazines; it helps me keep up on my french. The folks working downstairs are very knowledgable. There's no need for them to get on the computer to look up _The Crucible_ to know it's a play or that it's by Arthur Miller. They know it and they know where it is in the store to go fetch it. This book store is really awesome. Downstairs they have lots of new books. There are really nice versions of classics such as Dracula, and Dante's Inferno. Upstairs, there are really cheap used books. I love how the store is laid out, and I really want to come back here to get the cool copy of Dracula for school. read more
