I really like going to this B&N location. I love that it had ample parking and it doesn't hurt that there's a Chick-fil-A in the same parking lot/shopping area. There was mucho construction going on around here the last time I was in the neighborhood, so I decided not to hassle with it. That's one of my gripes with The Pointe at 5300 in general (which, I guess is the official name of this development) is that the parking and access and traffic seems to cluster up with this big development, the mega hospital, the Costco, and the transit systems to the west. You have a lot of people in the State/5300 area clustering up together all with different agendas. This aside, let's stop our complaining and take note that there is a massive bookstore in a really accessible place and be happy about that. B&N is still around and still kicking. We've gone from the plight of the small, independent bookstores in movies like You've Got Mail, to a point where B&N feels like the little guy up against the big online retailers. For now, they're still firmly planted in the brick and mortar. This location is pretty similar to any other. It might be a bit larger than a couple that I frequent, but I'm not sure I can point out the intricacies of what that extra space means, for certain. And there are larger to be had in SLC. They feature a coffee shop inside. Was it Starbucks? Edit: I just looked it up and duh, of course it is... but I'm not a coffee guy it's all the same to me. If you want to grab a cup and sit down, there's room to peruse, percolate, and ponder. As for me, I just don't find myself at bookstores too often, and when I do, it's in different parts of town, or when visiting old used bookstores on vacation. Great if you have kids and want to stop by, or have some time and want to cafe it up with a good read. read more

I've always loved the soothing, relaxed ambiance of Barnes and Noble. During most of my formative teenage and young adult years, I can happily recall many lazy evenings after work spent sipping on coffee with my friends reading tattoo and motorcycle magazines in the café. Later on, I even landed a much coveted position as a Barnes and Noble barista at the Southtowne location. It was a very cool summer job. I'm older now, probably not wiser, but I still cherish my Barnes and Noble time. My "base of operations" is the Barnes and Noble on 52nd and State. I've been frequenting this store now for over 7 years and I've made it multi-generational. I have an ongoing tradition where I bring my young son (who is now 6) every other Saturday to "hang out" - which usually involves him flipping thru the comic books and graphic novels as I sip on a delicious beverage. I dig this location for several reasons. They have an awesome kid's section. A miniature train set and a tiny reading area can be found in it. Of course, the café is top notch. The baristas are fast, friendly, and make a mean iced skinny caramel macchiato. The store itself is always clean and organized and the staff willing and ready to answer any questions you might have. Of course they offer wi-fi and have a few electrical outlets available, so feel free to bring in your lap top to the café. It is a great area to decompress, flip through magazines or books, or to study with friends or alone. read more

This Barnes & Noble store has a similar layout and selection to just about every other Barnes & Noble out there. The store is clean, well stocked, and generally well staffed. I like the bargain racks and the clearance sections the best because you can find some great deals. The Barnes & Nobles Classics, paperback re-printings of old books like Tom Sawyer and Moby Dick are also a terrific value. While online retailers may take some sales away from brick and mortar stores like this one, they can never replace the enjoyment of browsing at a good bookstore. Make sure and drop by the cafe for a fresh cup of joe or a baked treat. read more

I grew up going to Barnes and Nobles to hang out. There was one right by the mall of the town I grew up in and it seemed like what everyone would do on the weekends was either hang out at the mall, or hang out at Barnes and Nobles cafe and the bookstore. I didn't mind this as I have always been a huge book worn so even if I am only hanging around books and not reading them, I am still happy because they are close by. This location is huge! Two stories with the cafe on the first floor and lots and lots of books. It is located off state street in Murray. Same center as where they have a Chic-fil-a, Chipotle, in & out, cafe zupas, noodles and co, and a zao eatery. read more

To start off I am not a book worm by any stretch of the imagination! However I do find myself here from time to time with friends, or even to stop by the ever so lovely Starbucks inside. Though this review is for Barnes & Noble this Starbucks location is well worth the visit in and of itself! Great barista's, great quiet sitting area, and great customer service! Back to Barnes & Noble, this location is great it's a little smaller than the other locations, and I think for that reason it's special to me. It's quiet, cozy, and certainly welcoming. The staff is VERY knowledgeable, and eager to help. From the mouth of many friends I understand the kids section is outstanding, and the story time is a must if you have little ones running around! All in all this location makes even the most amateur book worm feel like the pick of the litter. I encourage all to give it a go! P.S. I'll be the guy with the Yelp sunglasses by the Starbucks reading, ok looking at a magazine (one with lots of pictures) sipping an iced caramel machiato! read more

This is my favorite Barnes & Noble location in the valley. Sure, Gateway and Sugarhouse are bigger, but this one's cozier, nicer, and more personable. I used to attend the childrens story hour every Saturday, and have always loved the childrens dept staff. (Raquel and Joe from the old days, now it's run by Krystle--who is super sweet and awesome.) Great book selection throughout the store, particularly specialty books. Also, very informed staff regarding all things nook. (Not so at every store.). Great cafe too. read more

I love coming here. The smell of coffee, the wonderful books, the games, everything! Sometimes I come here just to see all the new books and to just wander. My husband and I love window shopping here. The only complaint I have would be they should have a customer computer or a couple so we can look up titles or authors, maybe even some information on where in the store to find the books. They do have a computer for the employees, but I would love to be able to just look it up myself, since sometimes the employee is busy or not even at the desk. read more

I mostly go there to buy books for my son's English class and they are mostly out-of-stock. When they don't have a copy on hand, they can never give me an accurate idea of how long it will take to get in. The answer is always "it usually takes less than a week". In a world where Amazon can deliver a book to my doorstep in two days, and tell me where the package is every step of the way, that answer just doesn't cut it. I wish they would coordinate with the the local Junior and Senior High Schools and stock up ahead of time. Mostly good customer service and knowledgeable staff. I'd prefer not to be pestered about membership program at every single visit. Never done it, won't ever do it. read more

This is one of my favorite b&n locations because it is larger and has a movie section. They have lots of seasonal displays and sales. This company is great about checking with their other stores for items in stock or to order. Most employees are helpful and knowledgable. There are comfortable reading areas and a cafe. I go for the Barista and stay for the commentary! my author friends and I have spent countless hours plotting, staging, giggling, and agonizing over our work between bites of warm spinach and feta pretzels. The yumminess runneth over! And the drinks are amazingly good. None better! the delivery can be a tad slow and the tables fill quickly, but what more can one expect?! read more

First of all, I would have rated this at least 4 stars, but I'm biased because I used to work at this location. So take my opinions with a grain of salt! We'll start with the bad, just to get it over with. BAD I am truly a fan of this location, but the customer service bothers me, which knocked my rating down. In the last few years since I left, the whole staff (beginning with management) saw a complete turnover and I'm NOT a fan of the new book people. And no, it's not because they don't know who I am and I don't know them and all that. It's because they're not very friendly and they act all put out when you ask them something. Especially one of the managers...yikes is she a gem. Ok fine, there ARE a few cool people, but I keep having experiences like this one: I told the girl at the customer service desk I wanted to order a book and she let out a big ol sigh like her life is so hard. It might be, sure, and the customer service desk does suck, but is it really so hard to hold the sigh in for 5 seconds and let it out in private? No. It's not. Then she typed all slow and answered phones and did basically everything other than order my book for 10 minutes, including gab with one of the other booksellers. Ok I know it wasn't something that I did because I'm not that difficult. In fact, I'm quite pleasant. So maybe I'll just fend for myself in the store next time and order my books online or over the phone. So that's basically the jist of it. The bad, that is. GOOD The store has a pretty good variety of books. I can never find the stuff I'm looking for at the one in that confusing Midvale stripmall area. There must be some weirdos that work in the Murray location because there are books there that I know for a fact have to be special ordered to be on the shelves. I love it! Makes the whole book browsing experience that much more fun. They do a pretty good job keeping it organized too, so that's nice. It's pretty easy to find what you're looking for. The cafe people are awesome! They don't always listen when I tell them I don't want whipped cream, but regardless the drinks taste good and the baristas definitely deserve tips. Music section is basically like all the other Barnes and Nobles. So nothing really noteworthy there. I'm a fan of the store and I go there all the time. I just avoid the customer service desk. :) read more

This is tough, because on one hand I love going there to check out books in person, On the other hand, it is so much cheaper to buy online from even them. I get it, brick and mortar, rent and so on. With that said, I try to buy some from them and online. Good store, neat staff. read more

This place is decent but it's the cafe. There's this one barista who can be well, a bitch. I go there only like once a week to work with clients and when I went the first time I asked for a water with my drink and she told me in a snarky way ( like I should have known) to go get it from the water fountain by the restrooms. She gives off a very aggressive vibe and is kind of rude. But other then that barns in noble is good!! read more

I have always liked Barnes and Noble. They have a great selection of books, and it is a good place to loose yourself for a few hours.

I was incredibly disappointed with the staff today. I was waiting patiently to pick up some books on reserve while the associate was helping an older gentleman. The gentleman was in his 70's and asking if they had a CD in store. You didn't have it, so he asked if it was online. The associate searched the artist and 49 titles came up. He couldn't see what she was looking at and hadn't decided what one he wanted to buy. When he asked her what albums they sold she said, " There are 49 albums. I'm not going to read them to you." He fumbled to put on his glassed and selected an album. The he asked if there was sheet music to the album. When searching she found that there was only sheet music for a couple songs. She was frustrated and rude in all of her answers to him. She was so short that she confused him and he had no clue what she was talking about. He decided not to buy the CD and walked away. After walking away she LAUGHED at him in frustration and rolled her eyes!!! When she looked at me, she rolled her eyes, huffed and puffed and asked if she could help me. At no time was this man unkind to her! This was COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY! Let me remind you, this process with him didn't even take five minutes. Checking out, the attendant looked like she hated her job. The sweet gentleman was behind me checking out and I HOPE she was nice to him. read more
